During the month of May, many states host an annual event on the governor's conference on "Aging." At these conferences, older Americans may learn new ways for healthy living and lifelong learning. Some time ago, my friend Mary shared an article entitled, "Nostalgia," which I feel may be interesting to our readers as they review the changes of the century. "Over the last 50 to 60 years, we have been witnesses to many changes in our lives...Here are just a few of them: We were born before cordless phones, fax machines and ice makers. Who ever heard of organ transplants or root canals? Horsepower was something to do with a horse. Callers rang the doorbell instead of blowing their horn. The fallout problem was something kept under your hat, and when folks sat down to dinner, they counted their blessings instead of calories. Guided missiles were rolling pins and frying pans. A babysitter was called a mother. A child had more brothers and sisters than fathers, and a car didn't wear out before it was paid for. A housewife canned food instead of taking it out of cans. Being a parent required more patience than money. Baths were taken once a week, and religion every day, and the only red menace was long winter underwear. $5 worth of groceries filled two bags, and when we were in school, the hard stuff meant algebra. We did without disposable diapers, velcro and scotch tape. Instead of the internet and the information superhighway, we had the party line. In our day, television was truly a luxury, and a black and white luxury at that. Tape meant to reel to reel, not cassettes or videos... and CDs were certificates of deposits, not compact discs, and owning a "hi-fi" was all the rage, and who could forget driving a Packard or a Nash? The only millionaires in baseball were the owners. Bunnies were small rabbits and rabbits were not Volkswagens. Cars in our time met running boards, cranks, Model A Roadsters and rumble seats. A mouse was a furry little creature, not part of a computer, and the only babes politicians kissed were those in their mother's arms. We were before Hawaii and Alaska became states, Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer, Snoopy, DDT, interstate highways, Holiday Inns, air conditioned cars and decaffeinated anything. We came from a time when we left our front door open. College kids swallowed goldfish, not alcohol, and in our day, songs had a tune and the words made sense. "Hippie" meant big in the hips. A trip meant travel. Bread came from bakeries, not the min. We were before microwave popcorn, child proof medicine bottles, and cars with cruise control. Streaking was what happened when you washed windows. Holidays were for getting together, not for getting away. And remember when a chick was a chicken, not the girl down the street? Tennis shoes were only worn in PE class. Bathing suits would cover your knees. And when you said, "I don't have anything to do," your parents said, "Find something to do!" In our day, we would swing and sway with Sammy K, waltz with Wayne King, dance to Guy Lombardo, and polka with Leo Greco. We have survived all of these changes and many more. What an exciting time to have lived." Warm Thought: Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80, anyone who keeps learning stays young. Building Community and Empowering Lives - Dr. Michael SwackWelcome to this joint production of The New Hampshire Secrets, Legends & Lore and The Radical Centrist Podcast. I'm your host Wayne King. It's not often that we feel compelled to do a joint podcast but there is something quite special about our guest Michael Swack - Senior Fellow at the Carsey Center for Impact Finance, having recently stepped aside from his previous role as its director - In hopes of being able to direct more of his energy to practical and positive projects. Michael has been New Hampshire's secret weapon for Community Development for forty years. Those of us who have known him over the course of those years are very proud of him and the contributions he has made toward building community here. But he isalso a man of the world and he has worked his magic in countries from North America to Asia, Latin America and Africa. He is, by every standard we have established on the Radical Centrist Podcast, a radical centrist - more interested in getting things done than towing the line of any dogma or ideology.Michael Swack is probably not a name that sets off a lot of bells and whistles with most folks, but for more than forty years he has been the brains behind some of the most innovative and empowering ideas for Community Economic Development and finance - not only in New Hampshire but nationally. In other words, he is a superstar, but a superstar without a super-ego. His joy - what gets him out of bed every day raring to go - is his work and the powerful understanding that his actions are making a difference in the lives of those too-often overlooked when it comes to building community and equity in our future. All of us have a shortlist of people in our lives whom we have met and immediately realized that we were in the presence of someone very unique and talented. For me Michael Swack is one of those people.I've known Michael now for more than 40 years. We were founding members of the New Hampshire Community Loan Fund, one of the very first nonprofit loan funds in America helping low-income families purchase and manage their cooperative housing. I was the prime sponsor of two key pieces of legislation that Michael - along with two other giants in my eyes: Elliot Berry and Julie Eades - were the brains behind. To this day Those two bills, that both became law, along with New Hampshire's first homeless shelter legislation, are among the laws of which I am most proud. But the thing about Michael is that he's never satisfied and his brain is always looking beyond today for the next series of ideas to achieve even more. All this is not to say that Michael is simply a "tinkerer" because among professionals in his field he - in fact - sets off all those bells and whistles I spoke of before, because Michael Swack is a pioneer in the field of Community Development, who never rests on his laurels. To dispense with the tinkerer analogy - and to make it even more silly but meaningful: He's the ever-ready bunny of Community Economic Development. His gears always seem to be turning, ferreting out ideas that use public and charitable dollars to leverage private sector investment, all in the name of benefitting the hub of our lives . . . our communities and more specifically the people of those communities. That's why In 2019, the National Opportunity Finance Network (OFN) awarded Michael the industry's highest individual honor, the 2019 Ned Gramlich Lifetime Achievement Award for Responsible Finance. Then, In 2021, Michael was appointed by President Biden to the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Community Development Advisory Board - a position he has recently been reappointed to by the President. It's also why his position as a professor at UNH and as the founder of the Center for Impact Finance at the Carsey School is the ideal spot for him, teaching others is the next best thing to cloning Michael himself.

Elizabeth Gurley Flynn - The Rebel Girl Continues to Educate, Incite and InspireAppropo of the current moment in our country, New Hampshire is currently embroiled in a legal battle at the intersection of history, free speech, labor law, and women's rights. Earlier in the year the state's department of historic resources approved and erected a historical marker recognizing the birthplace of Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, known as the "Rebel Girl" who was born in Concord in 1890. Guests Arnie Alpert and Mary Lee Sargent, who have filed suit to restore the marker to its agreed location in Concord along with Attorney Andru Volinsky who is representing them against the state, join host Wayne King in this episode.
Begining in 1977 a series of inexplicable Nightmare induced deaths took the lives of over 100 Hmong live in America. The mystery is still a source of conjecture and wonder in the medical community. I found this story positively intriguing, so I present to you my findings on this terrifying topic. Then, as usual I wind us down with a fictional story...this week we take a magical mystery tour with a tale taken from the pages of Weird Tales; a creepy detective story, sure to leave you shivering.www.nytimes.com/1981/05/10/us/nightmares-suspected-in-bed-deaths-of-18-laotians.html Wayne King, May 10, 1981Eric Young, Se Xioung, Laurel Finn, Terry Young, "Unique sleep disorders profile of a population-based sample of 747 Homg immigrants in Wisconsin," Social Science and Medicine, vol.79, Feb. 2013, pp. 57-65.Shelley R. SONG "Dream a Little Dream of Me," COVER, by Standards & Substandards on Van Sessions at The Monarch "Dream a Little Dream of Me" is a 1931 song with music by Fabian Andre and Wilbur Schwandt and lyrics by Gus Kahn. It was first recorded in February 1931 by Ozzie Nelson and also by Wayne King and His Orchestra, with vocals by Ernie Birchill. - Wiki MUSICIAN/BAND | Standards & Substandards "We're an easygoing quartet (vocals, piano, bass, drums) that loves to play whimsical re-creations, interesting blends of genres, classic jazz standards, or ironic twists on simple tunes. We'll just as happily perform an upbeat jazz standard as a bluesy torch song, and we'll also blur traditions of funk, pop, rock, and blues as the spirit moves us. In short, we just like playing music as we've reimagined it. The epitome of an old school Texas rancher, Wayne continues our Texas High Fence podcast series with some very strong opinions about what constitutes hunting, versus killing. Sara welcomes Texas border rancher Wayne King, who has worked in the area for decades and has never seen anything close to the chaos unfolding since the start of the Biden administration. King describes what it's like to have migrants banging on every door in the middle of the night and now many residents constantly carry guns and refuse to let their children pay outside. And he explains how he knows many of the people are criminals instead of people looking for honest work.Sara also cheers the apparent implosion of the Orwellian Disinformation Governance Board, praises Utah Rep, Burgess Owens for his powerful pro-life message in Congress, and takes on the latest unscientific nonsense from the those advocating for abortion. Please visit our great sponsors:My Pillow https://www.mypillow.com/carterIt's a BOGO Extravaganza! North Melbourne Kangaroos two-time premiership player and “Shinboner of the Century” Glenn Archer joins Shane Crawford and Nick Quinn on a blockbuster edition of Inside 50. The AFL Hall of Famer talks about how early career anxieties saw him skip training sessions, finding his feet in the team under the bright lights of Friday night football, the inspirational leadership abilities of Wayne ‘King' Carey during the Kangaroos' flag-winning years, and the front-page fallout of the Anthony Stevens-Carey saga that Archer feared would be “the end of the club” as he knew it.Post-playing career, Archer's life isn't short on star-wattage either. He talks about how his love for footy trips translated into success as a sports tour organiser and saw him share a Monaco yacht (and a dramatic tale) with Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber. ------- For our Victorian listeners, make sure you are listening for our code word each week! There are five in total and we will be asking for you to submit all five via the TAB Facebook page on Friday 13 August. The first person to correctly submit the codewords will win a day at the footy in our corporate box at the ‘G for you and 10 mates!Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions, this comp is only open to our Victorian listeners.T&C's apply. With just over 350 senior clerks and around 1,200 junior clerks in the UK, the job of a Barristers’ clerk was traditionally dominated by wide-boys from Essex, who followed their father into the role and worked their way up from trundling trollies to Court, to sometimes earning more than the Barristers they worked for. As the rest of the legal landscape is changing, the job of the clerk is evolving, becoming increasingly professional and, like the Bar, slowly more diverse. But what do they do and how do you become one? Do not miss out on listening to this episode, in which Hatti Suvari and senior clerk and Chambers Director at 23 Essex Street Chambers, Wayne King, bring you this unique, insightful and the first of it's kind episode! Wayne bares all about this unique profession, discussing his journey of how he became a Barrister's clerk, what it is like working in this unique area of the law and why it is so pivotal to our legal system.#barristersclerk #clerking #chambers #legallearning #getlegallyspeaking.

As we approach the 75th Veterans Day ceremonies since World War II, we hopefully prepare ourselves to remember past and current Canadian Armed Forces veterans who have served both in Canada and in numerous conflicts around the world. While many civilians are familiar with the battles of World War I and II, they are typically less familiar with the other important and challenging missions the Canadian Military have served in, such as Korea, Rwanda, Bosnia, Namibia, Haiti, Cyprus, and Afghanistan, to name just a few. While members of the Canadian Armed Forces receive excellent training and are proud of the work they have done, many of them encounter significant challenges when they are released and re-enter civilian society. The speakers will address these various challenges veterans face (financial, vocational, emotional, physical injuries, psychological, relationships, PTSD, etc.), the kinds of services and support that are available for veterans, and how we as civilians can best recognize and support the veterans in our communities. Speaker: Brad Hagen and Wayne King Brad Hagen is a Registered Psychologist with College of Alberta Psychologists since 2009 and has a Masters in Counselling (Counselling Psychology) along with a Ph.D. (Interdisciplinary); M.Sc. (Nursing); B.Sc. (Psychology). He has over 25 years of experience in teaching and conducting research at Universities in Western Canada, in the areas of mental health, nursing, addictions, and psychology. Currently a Professor Emeritus at the University of Lethbridge. Wayne King joined the RCAF in 1959. After completing his education at the University of Alberta, he began training as a pilot. His first operational tour was in Air Defence Command flying the CF101 Voodoo aircraft at RCAF Station Bagotville in Quebec. Following that, he was trained on the CC130 Hercules aircraft and became engaged in worldwide logistical and tactical support. An exchange tour with the USAF followed on the CC141 Starlifter aircraft which involved worldwide strategic and tactical air support including Vietnam. Wayne eventually assumed command of 429 Squadron in Winnipeg. He was later promoted to Colonel and posted to National Defence College in Kingston, Ontario. He retired from the military in 1982. Searching for Howard Baker Howard Baker was a key member of the US Senate during the Watergate hearings in the Nixon era. A key ally of President Nixon in the months leading up to the Watergate hearings, Baker was moved by the evidence and the historic responsibility of the moment and he rose to the occasion and assured his role in history by becoming a leader in the movement to remove President Nixon from office. Wayne King speaks with Ira Shapiro, author of "'Broken' Can the United States Senate save itself and the country?" This interview is a follow up to an earlier interview with Shapiro focused on shifting realities around the impeachment hearings of President Donald Trump.
During the month of May, many states host an annual event on the Governor's Conference on Aging. At these conferences, older Americans may learn new ways for healthy living and lifelong learning.Sometime ago, my friend Mary shared an article entitled “Nostalgia,” which I feel may be interesting to our readers as they review the changes of the century.Over the last 50 to 60 years, we have been witness to many changes in our lives. Here are just a few of them. We were born before cordless phones, fax machines and ice makers. Whoever heard of organ transplants or root canals? Horsepower was something to do with a horse collars. Ring the doorbell instead of blowing their horn. The Fallout problem was something kept under your hat. And when folks sat down to dinner, they counted their blessings instead of calories. Guided missiles were rolling pins and frying pans. A babysitter was called mother. A child had more brothers and sisters than fathers and the car didn't wear out before it was paid for. A housewife canned food instead of taking it out of cans. Being a parent required more patience than money. Bags were taken once a week and religion every day. And the only red menace was long winter underwear. $5 worth of groceries filled two bags. And when we were in school, the hard stuff meant algebra. We did without disposable diapers, velcro and scotch tape. Instead of the internet and the information superhighway, we had the party line. And our day TV was truly a luxury and a black and white luxury at that. Tape meant reel to reel that cassettes or videos, and CDs were certificates of deposits, not compact discs. And owning a hi fi was all the rage. And who could forget driving a Packard or a Nash. The only millionaires in baseball were the owners. Bunnies were small rabbits and rabbits were not Volkswagens cars in our time. Men running boards cranks Model A roasters and Bramble seeds. A mouse was a furry little creature, not part of a computer. And the only babes politicians kissed were those in their mother's arms. We were before Hawaii and Alaska became states, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Snoopy, DDT, interstate highways, holiday and air conditioned cars and decaffeinated anything. We came from a time when we left our front door open. College kids swallowed goldfish, not alcohol. And in our day, songs had a tune and the words made sense. Hippie meant big in the hips. A trip meant travel. Bread came from bakeries, not the grocery store. We were before microwave popcorn, childproof medicine, bottles, and cars with cruise control. Streaking was what happened when you washed windows. Holidays were forgetting together, not forgetting away. And remember when a chick was a chicken, not the girl down the street? Tennis shoes were only worn in PE class and bathing suits would cover your knees. And when you said “I don't have anything to do,” your parents said, “Find something to do then.” In our day we would swing and sway with Sammy K, waltz with Wayne King, dance to the Guy Lombardo and polka with Leo Greco. We have survived all of these changes and many more. What an exciting time to have left.Warm Thought: Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. A popular 30s bandleader, Wayne King has been compared to Lawrence Welk and Fred Waring. Known as the "Waltz King," his repertoire was made up of waltzes, novelty songs and sentimental recordings. The sound was copied by other musicians and made Wayne King famous. It was radio broadcasts, such as the Lady Esther Serenade, his Victor recording contracts and performances on Chicago's Aragon Ballroom that sold millions of recordings for Wayne King. Besides being a successful bandleader, Wayne King was also a saxophonist, often playing his instrument in the Wayne King Orchestra.
