According to a recent study, about 4-6% of all those incarcerated are considered to be wrongly imprisoned. That's over 70,000 people who are wrongly incarcerated every year. Today's guest, Justin Brooks has dedicated his life to representing those who have fallen victim to wrongful incarceration. Justin practiced as a criminal defense attorney in Washington, D.C., Michigan, Illinois, and California in both the trial and appellate courts. He was the founding director of the California Innocence Project at Cal Western Law School from 1999-2023, and under his direction the project freed 40 innocent people from prison (including former NFL player Brian Banks). He's been recognized several times by the Los Angeles Daily Journal as one of the Top 100 Lawyers in California, and in 2010 and 2012, California Lawyer Magazine honored him with the “Lawyer of the Year” award. He was named “International Lawyer of the Year” by the California Bar International Section in 2020 and in the same year was named “Champion of Justice” by the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys. In his latest book, “You Might Go to Prison Even Though You're Innocent” he details the causes of wrongful convictions based on his experience of more than three decades as a criminal defense attorney and innocence organization director. Justin took time to share his experience with us writing the book, over 30 years of legal work, and why everybody should care about wrongful convictions and the ramifications it has for our society. This is another episode you're not going to want to miss, so with that…let's bring it in!

Sunday 14 May, the Sixth Sunday of Easter, marks the International Day of Prayer for Eastern Christians. It's an opportunity to come together to pray for peace in the world – especially in the Middle East. But with so many noble causes competing for our attention, why is it important for us to pray for the Christians of the East with whom we share an indelible link? And how can we find out more about these Christian communities and the challenges they face? That's the subject of this Catholic News podcast. We're joined by Dr Harry Hagopian, an International Lawyer with experience in conflict resolution and a consultant on the Middle East North Africa region. Importantly, Harry is an Armenian Christian and was a former Assistant General Secretary of the Middle East Council of Churches. "When we pray for the Christians of the East, what we should say is, 'May thy will be done' and 'thy will' is also the will of the Christians there. They are a self-sustaining community. They have their own problems, they have their own challenges, but they also know their solutions better than we do sitting in the West watching EastEnders or Coronation Street advising them what they should or shouldn't do. That is not being in solidarity. That is religious colonialism. "What we need to say is, 'I'm with you. We share one common thing, which is Jesus Christ, and therefore I pray so that you have the will, the power and the strength to continue your witness and do what you do, which is continue your life as we do here, but in different circumstances.'" This week are we pleased to announce we have Joe Dehner, specialist in International Law, to discuss the legal side of e-discovery and all the things that go with it. For the first time on Restore it All, we have a lawyer discussing legal things! (Usually we just tell you we're not lawyers!) My favorite part was listening to him tell stories from actual cases that make the various points we discuss. I also enjoyed when we talk about the e-discovery boogey man, adverse inference. If you have heard me talk about this before, it's usually around the context of backup and archive – and how they are different! Hear it from the horse's mouth, so to speak.

There are two things in life that are part of life: 1. you will die, and 2. you will pay taxes. Do you get weird around paying taxes, or is it easy for you? I discuss tax with International Lawyer, David Kubes, and how his point of view when it comes to paying taxes creates more ease. You can change anything in your life that you think is not working for you, you just have to choose. It's the point of view you have and the energy around what you are doing and being. David highlights that taxes enable us to have it easier in our daily living and that avoiding taxes is like cutting off living in a community. Nevertheless, you can still get creative. Creativity is not the same thing as avoiding. You are actually a contribution in the way you spend money. If we all looked at the world like that, what could we truly create? ANTJE KUNST is an International Lawyer, Childs' Rights Advocate, and a Barrister (Lincoln's Inn). She was born in Friesland near the Nordsee in Germany but her working life as a lawyer has nearly always been abroad. It began in India from where her love of the country flourished. She subsequently worked in the Gaza Strip from 1999 for over 5 years and then came to Kosovo with the United Nations. Her experience brought her to London and as well as working on issues relating to international staff disputes, Antje's interests diversified into anti-corruption awareness, and also Childs' Rights – an interest sparked by a legal case involving her niece's rights as a blind child, attending a main stream school in London. This raised Antje's interests in disabled children in institutions and children's homes - a global problem where parents hand over their children to institutions in the belief that they will better care for their child, as they feel unable to adequately carry out this role at home due to the lack of community support but it is very often the case that, sadly, the children do not receive the depth of love they need and would get from their parents. Antje talks of meeting Janis McDavid who was born with no arms or legs and how his involvement as a motivational speaker in Sri Lanka, raised the awareness of being disabled and has become a huge motivator for parents' of disabled children. His belief being, as Antje put is, “if I can do it, you can do it clearly, as you are not disabled without arms and legs.” Antje met with a former Travelling Through customer Veronica Yates of CRINS (Childs' Rights International Network) who has subsequently moved to Berlin and talks of the magic of coincidences. Antje has travelled throughout India, Syria, Damascus, Jordan, and Lebanon. These are Antje's thoughts on London, the world and life. Gypsies, known as Romani people, with their long history of moving across countries and continents, fit into the modern day movement of millions struggling to find a better and more peaceful life. Barry Fisher tells us the story of his own musical and professional legal relationship as their lawyer, a population often stereotyped, living in the realm of mystique and mystery. We come to understand like other marginalized and abused groups, that Barry Fisher as a Lawyer, calls upon the First Amendment Rights in the United States Constitution to offer Gypsies the cornerstone of human rights protection. Over many centuries, their music, their decor, and their fortune telling custom, is at times incorporated into mainstream cultural life even as they continue to be considered outsiders. Barry Fisher, in addition to his long career defending Gypsies as a Lawyer on the front lines, has struggled to protect the wilderness, defend free speech, retrieve funds from Swiss banks for Holocaust Survivors and represent Asian victims of sexual slavery of wartime Japan, as a partial list of his legal successes. In 2021, he was declared the International Lawyer of the Year by the California Bar Association. Born in Vietnam, Lynelle Long felt like an outsider as the only nonwhite child in her family and community in Victoria, Australia. As an adoptee, she spent her entire adult life fighting to understand and connect with her identity and her past — a basic fundamental human right that was taken from her. While the accurate number is grossly underreported, the UN estimates that around 260,000 adoptions take place worldwide each year-- of them, roughly half are adopted into American families. When we hear about adoption, we often overlook the horrors of international and domestic scams that perpetuate the exploitation of children. In this episode, we'll unpack the financial incentives of international adoption systems that fuel the theft of children from their families. What are the hidden schemes that enable the kidnapping and sale of adoptees? How can we protect adoptees and adoptive families from abusive systems where they have no rights or support services? Featuring policy and advocacy insights from experts: Julie G. Rosicky, Executive Director of International Social Service-USA and David Smolin, and David Smolin, International Lawyer and Director of the Center for Children, Law and Ethics at Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. -- Finding Humanity is a production of Humanity Lab Foundation and Hueman Group Media. ABOUT LAUREN COHENLauren Cohen is an International Lawyer, Realtor and Foreign Investor Expert. Lauren and her turnkey team believe in overcoming obstacles and navigating global expansion for business owners and real estate investors while offering access to unique passive income options. Lauren's superpower rests in paving a path to immigration visas through real estate and business investment, navigating the path for clients to invest, live, work and play across borders. THIS TOPIC IN A NUTSHELL:[01:23] Lauren's career background[02:20] Her mission and motto in life[02:35] How she got started in the immigration space[04:11] What made her decide to get into real estate[05:11] Creating a support system and strategy on Investing across borders[06:26] Challenges of investing internationally[07:25] 8 Elements of Cross-border investing[09:04] Different regulations on Investing from different countries[09:50] Short and Long-term goals in getting a visa[10:06] Additional requirements for passive foreign investors [11:46] Avoiding double taxation issue from both countries[13:18] Benefits of Tax treaty [14:57] Pitfalls of Cross-border investing [15:34] Real estate as a path to immigration[17:00] Benefits of getting a visa [19:50] Time Frame on getting a visa for foreign investors [22:22] Steps or requirements that foreign investor should comply[26:30] Currency issues and compliance to receiving foreign money [30:14] Advice to realtors who want to partner with foreign investors[30:57] Additional opportunities for foreign investors[32:03] Visa benefits that apply to your family member[34:20] Advice to her 25-year-old self[35:22] First Entrepreneurial endeavor[36:00] Formal and Informal training that shaped her journey[38:22] Her biggest mistake and what she learned from it[39:50] How to reach out to Lauren Cohen KEY QUOTES[05:49] If you're a foreign investor, you are navigating through that complex maze that will cost you so much, if you don't do it right. There are so many people who wait until it's too late to get that guidance and get that help. It's always much more costly to fix the problem as opposed to preventing it. [16:06] The biggest pitfall I see with foreign investors is the lack of strategy and planning, because if you do ever want to think about the visa, then you should definitely plan it from the get-go. The other thing is, a lot of people think that getting a visa means you have to move to the US but that's not true. A visa is an option, it gives you flexibility, a visa right now is a big asset in your pocket. It's all about having those short-term and long-term goals planned out from the get-go, so you can achieve them instead of having to reinvent the wheel later. [28:12] The worst thing that realtors, investors, or anybody can do to their clients is to try to touch on something that isn't in their lane, and realtors do it all the time. They try to guide their clients on what they should do. Just defer and refer, because at the end of the day, it's gonna save you so much trouble. I know a lot of syndicators who worked with foreign nationals, so there's an opportunity for you, it's just a matter of handling the compliance side of it. Working towards a world without slavery - It's a big aim and a big task, but the team at Unseen believe they can do it. By concentrating their efforts on three main areas - supporting, equipping and influencing - they can start to tackle the issue in a way that really works. Their specialist care is the first step in the fight against slavery. Through supporting survivors, their provision gives them a safe place to recover from trauma and rebuild their lives. Their practices are researched thoroughly, enabling them to identify the key issues surrounding slavery and exploitation, and equipping themselves and others with effective, targeted solutions. They also recognise the importance of influencing the systems that keep slavery hidden. Tackling issues such as supply and demand are vital if we are going to eradicate slavery. They hope that one day their work is no longer needed. That by working in partnership with communities, business, governments and other organisations they can stamp out slavery for good. But while there are victims of trafficking, they want to be here to offer them the safety, hope and choice they deserve. Joining Max MacGillivray on this important broadcast and to discuss how we can all assist to combat modern day slavery, will be: Justine Currell is the Executive Director of Unseen and will be covering the strategic elements and how Unseen can help with services and training. Do you want to learn how to develop your investment portfolio across borders and in an international level? Do you want to invest in real estate without any bother of pain? If you do, then you’re up for a great treat. Real estate investment alone is already complicated enough, and the process just gets more complicated in cross-border investment. There, you don’t only consider your home country’s rule, but also the subject countries’ rules and the cross-border rules. You need experts to guide you in every move that you do, and this episode will show you the road towards that cross-border goal of yours. Lauren Cohen is a serial entrepreneur as she works as an International Lawyer, Realtor and Cross-Border Expert. She was originally from Toronto, but now she’s based in South Florida. And so here you are, suddenly you're investing and they're like, ‘here's your plan’. But what happens when you go back to England, or go back to Canada, or when you file your tax return in China or wherever? Nobody's giving you that guidance. So, you're going to end up with a lot of challenges, and you may end up losing a lot of money and having a lot of legal problems in the process.” – Lauren Cohen “Consult with a cross-border tax advisor before you do anything at all.
