As we like to do as often as possible on Soundtracking, we are celebrating an independent film this week, as first directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard and then musicians Emiliana Torrini and SImon Byrt join Edith to discuss their collaboration on an esoteric gem, The Extraordinary Miss Flower. This picture is quite hard to describe, if we're honest, but was basically inspired by behind-the-scenes friend of the show, Zoe, who discovered a suitcase full of her late mother Geraldine's letters, which suggested that Geraldine had led a much more exotic and, well, extraordinary life than Zoe could have possibly imagined. This in turn inspired an album's worth of songs from Emiliana, co-written and produced by Simon, which form the backbone of this movie - directed by Iain and Jane.
Emiliana Mangone, Guido Gili"Speranza. Recentemente ha pubblicato: Pitirim A. Happiness, it turns out, comes down to a science — even though what makes each of us happy can vary widely. Host Cristina Quinn talks to happiness scientist Emiliana Simon-Thomas, science director at UC-Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center, about exactly what makes us happy and how much our sense of joy is within our control. Drawing from the science of happiness, Emiliana explains that happiness isn't about chasing fleeting positive emotions, but rather about fostering an overarching sense of contentment, belonging and resilience. She also lays out how much of happiness is influenced by genetics, external circumstances and the choices we make. This course reminds us that happiness isn't out of reach — it's something we can cultivate every day. Emiliana and her colleagues at the Greater Good Science Center have been collecting data on happiness through the Big Joy Project, a seven-day online study where participants are assigned a micro-act of joy every day. Matt Crawford speaks with author Emiliana Vegas about her book, Let's Change the World: How to Work within International Development Organizations to Make a Difference. What is an IDO, we may heard of some such as Oxfam or the World Bank but what do they do and how can one start a career within them? Basically, IDOs hold the goal of assisting developing nations in finding solutions to issues that surround and can arise from global inequity and poverty. Vegas describes how she found her way to working among them for decades, what some of her most fulfilling projects were and how the next generation can become involved.

Emiliana was a high-powered, fast-paced woman on the rise in journalism. She'd reached one of the pinnacles of media coverage: she was covering the White House. When something shook her nest from the very roots, Emiliana had a kind of awakening. Today, she seeks truth, joy, and is trying to bring her awakening to the nest of journalism itself.
Today we have a really special episode. Jo is sharing some of the conversations she has with her children every day. It's important to listen to children because they are one of the people groups that we listen to the least. Children are incredibly wise, and there is so much that can be gained from taking time to hear what they have to say. So on the episode today, Jo features conversations with her three oldest children, Antonella, Emiliana, and Maximilian . And we end with the affirmations that they do as a family on a daily basis.
