Episode Description Join us as we explore the intricate economic landscape of Alberta in mid-summer, where high inflation and interest rates contrast with robust economic growth. Alongside our chief economist, Mike Holden, we unpack the paradox of a thriving economy and rising unemployment rates in major cities like Calgary and Edmonton. Despite the high business optimism and strong private sector job growth, the rapid influx of newcomers is outpacing job creation, presenting unique challenges for the province. We also examine the financial struggles facing Albertans amidst rising living costs. Inflation may be slowing, but the cost of rent has surged nearly 16% over the past year, leaving many feeling financially insecure. Shifts in consumer spending patterns reveal a decline in discretionary spending and an uptick in essential purchases driven by population growth. Our discussion highlights nuanced retail trends, such as increased sales at gas stations and hardware stores, despite a drop in per-person spending. Looking ahead, we delve into Alberta's economic future, discussing projections that consider inflation, interest rates, and population growth. The potential benefits of decreasing inflation and interest rates could provide relief, particularly for homeowners. We highlight the positive impacts of the U.S. economy on Alberta and the importance of accommodating significant population growth through infrastructure investment. Finally, we explore the critical issue of unemployment rates, emphasizing the need for job creation to match the rapid population influx, ensuring newcomers can contribute positively to Alberta's prosperity. ------------ About The Business Council of Alberta The Business Council of Alberta was founded on a simple idea: to make life better for all Albertans. We believe that business has an important role in improving society, and that when business does well, we all do well. We work with the chief executives and leading entrepreneurs of Alberta's largest enterprises to understand the big, long-term challenges that Albertans are facing and work with industry, government, and civil society to solve these problems and build shared prosperity for every person who calls Alberta home. Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
In the latest episode of "Mid Atlantic," host Roifield Brown is joined by a global panel including Z Cohen Sanchez from Arizona, Logan Phillips from Washington, DC, Dave Smith from London, and Mike Holden from Burnley. The discussion kicks off with the unfolding UK election campaign, highlighting Nigel Farage's return to frontline politics and the anticipated leaders' debate. The panel dissects Farage's impact on the Conservative Party and the potential electoral consequences of his bid to become an MP in Clapton.Dave and Mike debate the significance of Farage's comeback, emphasising the potential devastation to the Conservative vote. They analyse whether Reform Party votes will translate into parliamentary seats and discuss the broader implications for the Tory party's future. Logan provides a snapshot of current UK polls, showing a significant shift in voter sentiment towards the Reform Party and away from the Conservatives. The conversation then shifts to the aftermath of Donald Trump's recent conviction and its impact on the US political landscape. Logan Phillips discusses the polling implications, noting a slight uptick for Biden but emphasising the need for more data to fully understand the trends. The panel also explores the potential long-term threat posed by Trump's candidacy and the broader challenges facing American democracy.Quotes from the Episode:"Farage's comeback is the worst news Rishi Sunak has had in the last 48 hours." - Mike Holden"A 400-seat majority in Parliament is not a healthy thing. It will lead to real problems in terms of scrutiny and what the government does." - Dave Smith"Biden looked very old and not exciting during the primary debates, but at least now, both him and Trump are of similar cognitive ability." - Z Cohen Sanchez"The no audience part of the debate format is the greatest political bear trap that's been laid recently." - Dave Smith"Trump's speech after the verdict was incomprehensible. His declining cognitive abilities are catching up with him." - Roifield Brown Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In a twist that has left political pundits and voters alike scrambling, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has called for a UK general election on July 4th. This unexpected announcement comes at a time when many believed the election would be delayed until November. The move has sparked a flurry of reactions and speculation about the motivations behind such timing.Key Insights from the EpisodeShock and Speculation: Steve O'Neill, expressed his surprise at the timing, noting that many expected a November election. Tonye Altrade, suggested that recent economic news, particularly regarding inflation, might have influenced Sunak's decision.Labour's Preparedness: The general consensus among the pundits, including Mike Holden and Corey Bernard, is that the Labour Party should be ready for this early election call. Keir Starmer's calm and pragmatic response indicates that Labour is poised for the challenge, despite the unexpected timing.Impact of Voter ID Laws: The discussion also touched on the new voter ID laws, a controversial topic that could potentially disenfranchise certain voter demographics, notably the young and economically disadvantaged. This issue, reminiscent of similar debates in the US, adds another layer of complexity to the upcoming election.Conservative Party Dynamics: The panel speculated on the internal dynamics of the Conservative Party and the potential candidates for leadership post-election. The focus was on whether the party will shift further to the right or see a resurgence of One Nation Tories.Electoral Strategy and Policy: The conversation highlighted the strategic moves both major parties need to make in the coming weeks. Labour's stance on Gaza and the Middle East, as well as the Conservative Party's handling of immigration and economic issues, will likely play crucial roles in swaying public opinion.Memorable Quotes"Even throughout until about midday today, I was saying no, it'll be November. Everyone's getting overly excited. But I was completely wrong." - Steve O'Neill"This is his best shot at it. I don't know if it's going to be enough, but it is worth a gamble." - Tonye Altrade"First off, I don't even think you should be holding the election on July 4th, but let's leave that aside for now." - Mike Donoghue"I think the Labour Party should be raring to go, then it, that would be a disaster." - Corey Bernard"Every picture that you've seen has been a sodden looking downbeat man." - Mike HoldenFurther ReadingBBC News: Rishi Sunak Calls July 4th ElectionEconomist Report: UK Economic Indicators and Election Timing Hosted on Acast. Alberta has seen the strongest employment growth of all large provinces, but while resilient, Alberta has not escaped weak expectations globally or nationally. The labour market is softening, unemployment has ticked up, and Albertans are still feeling the impact of inflation and interest rates, with less than half feeling good about their finances. Despite this, Alberta businesses are among the most optimistic in the country, and they intend to continue to spend on capital this year. Further, Alberta is attracting a larger share of venture capital dollars, despite a national dip in overall investment. On this episode, we're back with BCA's economics team, Mike Holden and Alicia Planincic, to break down the Spring 2024 update of the Alberta Snapshot, an all-points summary of Alberta's economy. We look at the labour market and employment, check up on consumer spending and general affordability, and discuss business expectations and the state of the economy. We also look ahead at indicators to watch and ruminate on what we hope is to come. ------------ About The Business Council of Alberta The Business Council of Alberta was founded on a simple idea: to make life better for all Albertans. Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
Roifield Brown and panel navigate through the turbulent political climates of both the United States and the UK, focusing on two major stories that have captured headlines and stirred considerable debate. The episode unfolds against the backdrop of Florida's contentious new six-week abortion law and the anticipation of a landslide victory for the Labour Party in the UK's next general election. The discussion on Florida's abortion law reveals a deep-seated concern over reproductive rights, with critics arguing that the law, which imposes mandatory in-person doctor visits and a 24-hour waiting period, acts as a de facto total ban on abortion. Panelists, including Mike Donoghue from Los Angeles and Ira Shapiro from Maryland, unpack the implications of such legislation, noting its potential to drastically alter the outcome of the November election. They delve into the political underpinnings of the law, emphasising its alignment with a broader Republican agenda to restrict abortion access across the country. The conversation also touches on the judicial dynamics at play, with Shapiro providing insight into how the Florida Supreme Court could overturn decades of precedent, hinting at a politically motivated judiciary under Governor DeSantis's influence.Transitioning to the UK, the podcast explores the significant political shift indicated by recent polls, suggesting a monumental victory for the Labour Party. Such a scenario raises questions about the potential for sweeping policy reforms under a Labour government led by Keir Starmer. Panelists, including Mike Holden from Burnley and Leah Brown from Lancashire, express a mix of optimism and caution, highlighting the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for Labour, particularly in addressing pressing issues like the National Health Service and climate change.Bullet Points :Florida's Six Week Abortion Law:The law's implications for women's rights and reproductive freedoms.Political motivations behind the law and its potential effects on elections. The role of the judiciary and the possibility of overturning the law through a ballot measure.UK Labour Party's Potential Victory:Predictions of a landslide victory for Labour and its implications. The potential for policy reforms in health service, climate change, and economic policy. The role of leadership and public opinion in shaping political outcomes.Key Quotes from the Podcast:On Florida's Abortion Law: "This regulation... effectively acts as a total ban, complicating abortion access dramatically as political and social opposition mounts."On Political Strategy: "It's pretty clear their real goal is a full zero... targeting IVF, rules against abortion for rape and incest survivors."On the UK's Labour Victory Prediction: "We're at a historic juncture with the Conservative Party facing what could be one of its most devastating electoral defeats in recent history."On Leadership and Decision-Making: "It comes down to a misunderstanding of what it means and looks like to be a leader... people generally don't necessarily have a willingness to learn from lessons of those who have come before them."On Public Ownership and Policy Reform: "The one thing an incumbent Labour government should do is to say water, we're going to take that back into public ownership." As we enter 2024, Alberta finds itself in a relatively strong position compared to the rest of Canada and is forecasted, once again, to be a leader in economic growth for the nation. This strength is underpinned by Alberta's outperformance in several areas including population growth, renewed vitality in the resources sector, a stronger labour market, and strong residential and capital investment. But while Alberta holds strong, the rest of the country finds itself sputtering. On this episode, we're back with BCA's economics team, Mike Holden and Alicia Planincic, to break down the Winter 2024 update of the Alberta Snapshot, an all-points summary of Alberta's economy. We look at the labour market and employment, check up on consumer spending and general affordability and discuss business expectations and the state of the economy. We also look ahead at indicators to watch and opine on what's to come. ------------ About The Business Council of Alberta The Business Council of Alberta was founded on a simple idea: to make life better for all Albertans. Alberta has been calling, and Canadians have been answering. Enticed by Alberta's affordable cost of living and opportunity, thousands of people are moving to the province to make their home and living here, injecting some much-needed positivity into the province. And while affordability and opportunity are attracting people to Alberta, and businesses are optimistic about our economic future, there are a few things we need to address in order make this short-term success translate to long-term growth and prosperity. On this episode, we speak with BCA's economics team, Mike Holden and Alicia Planincic, to break down the spring 2023 update of the Alberta Snapshot, an all-points summary of Alberta's economy. The discussion includes Alberta's economic outlook, the state of business in the province, the battle against inflation, wage growth, housing, and what we can expect in the coming months to ensure Alberta's affordability. ------------ About The Business Council of Alberta The Business Council of Alberta was founded on a simple idea: to make life better for all Albertans. It's a new year, and that means we're back with a fresh look at what is happening in the economy, both here in Alberta and Canada, but also around the world. Coming into 2023, things are a bit in flux: people are concerned about rising inflation, rising cost of living, the cost of healthcare, and a looming global economic slowdown. But despite these hardships, Alberta's job market is hot, people are moving to Alberta, and wage growth is expected to accelerate. In this episode, we're joined by BCA's economics team, Mike Holden and Alicia Planincic, to discuss the latest economic update from the Business Council: what's going on in the labour force, consumer sentiment, potential for a global recession, and expectations for the coming year. ------------ About The Business Council of Alberta The Business Council of Alberta was founded on a simple idea: to make life better for all Albertans. Inflation, interest rates, and global instability are still rearing their ugly heads as we head into the final quarter of 2022. And these conditions have prompted economists to lower economic growth forecasts across the globe. And this means Alberta will be impacted, too. However, Alberta is more than ready for this impact. In fact, Alberta's economy is still on track to be the largest it's ever been and lead Canada in growth. This is due in large part to still strong commodity prices but also: an incredible harvest, near record net migration to the province, and major investments. For Albertans, the picture is less rosy. While inflation is hurting all Canadians, Albertans are not seeing their wages rise compared to their fellow Canadians, and this is putting additional pressure on household budgets. And businesses are still facing an endemic labour shortage, made worse with declining productivity. So, where does that leave Alberta? Mike Holden, BCA's Chief Economist joins the show to break down our latest economic update, shedding insight on everything from employment and wages to OPEC production cuts and interprovincial migration. ------------ About The Business Council of Alberta The Business Council of Alberta was founded on a simple idea: to make life better for all Albertans. After nearly a decade of struggle, is Alberta making a comeback? Many economic indicators—commodity prices, revenue inflows, employment levels, inter-provincial migration—say yes. But with rising inflation and interest rates and lower wage growth, this comeback comes with terms and conditions. BCA's economists Mike Holden and Alicia Planincic break down the state of Alberta's economy going into Summer 2022.

Inflation in Canada hit a 30-year high in April 2022, and Albertans are feeling the pinch in nearly every category—shelter costs (rent, utilities, etc.), food, and gas, to name a few. In fact, nearly 1 out of 4 Albertans are struggling to afford basic necessities. And with slow wage growth and long-term unemployment still a challenge, we may be at a tipping point in Alberta. To explore what we can do to relieve the pressure of rising prices, BCA's economics team, Mike Holden and Alicia Planincic share their perspectives on what is driving this inflation and what tools we have to fight inflation.

On this special mid-week podcast Journal of Commerce staff writer Russell Hixson is talking with Mike Holden, the vice president of policy and chief economist for the Business Council of Alberta about the recent rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline project and what the future holds for the Alberta economy. Holden said while rejection of the pipeline by President Joe Biden wasn't a surprise it was a disappointment for Albertans and the various industries in the province tied to pipeline development. He also pointed out Alberta has endured “punch after punch” given multiple oil price crashes and the COVID-19 pandemic along with cancellation of Keystone. Holden also said there are still avenues to take advantage of resource assets, such as attracting private capital to the province and communicating Alberta's successes in moving toward sustainability and a low-carbon future. Federal support for the province and for projects similar to Keystone XL would also boost confidence.
