The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Aran Shetterly. Classified as a White Man, Mr. Shetterly studied at Harvard, is a “journalist and narrative historian,” and a non-fiction writer. He's lived in Costa Rica, Cuba and Mexico, and his black wife Margot Lee may own the title as best writer in the family. She authored the bestseller, Hidden Colors: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race. The local history of Alabama White Supremacy in book and film format. Mr. Shetterly does his best as the 2nd best writer in his house with his 2024 offering, Morningside: The 1979 Greensboro Massacre & The Struggle for an American City's Soul. Gus found this book in response to the passing of Rev. Nelson Johnson, who transitioned earlier this year. Mr. Johnson was nearly killed - and, ultimately, blamed, for the November 3rd, 1979 Greensboro massacre. White Terrorists coordinated with local police, the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, & Firearms, journalists, and probably other Whites to kill 5 people. No Whites were ever criminally charged for the slaughter. Johnson - who was severely injured during the melee, was blamed for the fracas for decades. #ReplaceWhiteSupremacyWithLove #GreensboroMassacre #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

INTRODUCTION: On the morning of November 3, 1979, in a quiet neighborhood of Greensboro, North Carolina, a crowd gathered for a march—activists, mill workers, and local citizens standing together against the Ku Klux Klan. The press was there, cameras rolling, ready to document a demonstration for justice. But what unfolded in just 88 seconds was something no one could have imagined. Shots rang out. Five people lay dead. The killers—members of the Klan and American Nazis—walked away without consequence. And just like that, an act of political terror carried out in broad daylight became a footnote in American history. No justice. No reckoning. No headlines in history books.   As part of our Black Heritage Month, author and historian Aran Shetterly is here today to change that. His new book, available on Apple Books, Morningside: The 1979 Greensboro Massacre and the Struggle for an American City's Soul, is a gripping, meticulously researched account of the Greensboro Massacre—one of the most brazen acts of racial and political violence in modern America, and one that eerily mirrors the polarization, extremism, and law enforcement failures we continue to see today.   Why was this atrocity buried in the past? What does it reveal about justice—then and now? And what lessons can we learn as we approach the 45th anniversary of this chilling event? Aran Shetterly spent years uncovering the truths that many wanted to stay hidden. He spoke with activists, police officers, informants, and eyewitnesses—some who still refuse to acknowledge what happened that day. Today, he joins us to share what he found and why Morningside is more than just history—it's a warning.   This is The Not Old Better Show, and I'm Paul Vogelzang. Stay with us. My thanks to historian Aran Shetterly and his new book, Morningside: The 1979 Greensboro Massacre and the Struggle for an American City's Soul. My thanks to Sam & Miranda Heninger for keeping us going. Matt Crawford speaks with author Aran Shetterly about his book, Morningside: The 1979 Greensboro Massacre and the Struggle for an American City's Soul. On November 3, 1979, as activist Nelson Johnson assembled people for a march adjacent to Morningside Homes in Greensboro, North Carolina, gunshots rang out. A caravan of Klansmen and Neo-Nazis sped from the scene, leaving behind five dead. Known as the “Greensboro Massacre,” the event and its aftermath encapsulate the racial conflict, economic anxiety, clash of ideologies, and toxic mix of corruption and conspiracy that roiled American democracy then—and threaten it today. In 88 seconds, one Southern city shattered over irreconcilable visions of America's past and future. When the shooters are acquitted in the courts, Reverend Johnson, his wife Joyce, and their allies, at odds with the police and the Greensboro establishment, sought alternative forms of justice. As the Johnsons rebuilt their lives after 1979, they found inspiration in Nelson Mandela's post-apartheid Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Martin Luther King Jr's concept of Beloved Community and insist that only by facing history's hardest truths can healing come to the city they refuse to give up on.

Show Notes: Aran Shetterly,  a self-professed late bloomer, took a year off in the middle of his studies to pursue an Echoing Green fellowship, which allowed him to set up a nonprofit in Costa Rica to link volunteers to environmental organizations there. He then decided to pursue a master's in American and New England studies from the University of Southern Maine. However, after completing his masters, he realized he needed to explore the world in a different way. He moved to New York and worked as an editorial assistant. A year later, he met an old school friend who founded an internet startup called Comet Systems. Aran  recounts his experiences in the world of internet ethics and the impact of internet spyware on the US. He recalls when he was on his way to a meeting with Yahoo to discuss a partnership when he learned that Comet Systems was accused of creating spyware. At Yahoo he was given a lecture on internet ethics.  Researching Castro's Rebellion and The Fight Against It Aran talks about a trip to Cuba where he learns about Fidel Castro's rebellion and the support of internationals during the Spanish Civil War. He met William Morgan, who was a key figure in the fight against Castro. This meeting inspired Aran to leave Comet Systems and start writing his book. Upon returning from the trip, Aran searched for information about Morgan and sent a Freedom of Information Act request to the CIA. He receives two inches of redacted documents, which he uses to write his first book, "The Americano Fighting with Castro for Cuba's Freedom." Aran summarizes the story and how Morgan played a double agent role in uncovering a plot to topple Castro, but later turned against the revolution as it turned communist. Aran recounts his six-month stay in Cuba, where he worked on two projects: setting up an exchange of artists between Maine and Cuba, and conducting research on the Kennedy assassination. He was often followed by officials from the interior ministry and almost ended up in jail. He also spent time in Miami researching the revolutionaries who were excluded from Castro's rebellion. He spent time researching the Kennedy assassination investigation.  From Mexico to the Greensboro Massacre Aran and his wife Margo met while working at Comet Systems. They fell in love and decided to launch an English language magazine and website called Inside Mexico, which they launched in Mexico City in 2005. He talks about journalists they worked with and stories they covered, and how the magazine finally came to an end. After ten years in Mexico, they were drawn back to the U.S. when Margo's book proposal was optioned by a production company. The book was a success, and the couple had to come back to help promote it. In 2015, he met Reverend Nelson Johnson and Joyce Johnson, who told the story of the Greensboro massacre, a civil rights activist and Black Power leader who were trying to organize textile mills in North Carolina. The Greensboro massacre occurred when Neo Nazis and Klansmen shot and killed five and injured 10 workers during a march to educate workers about the divisive nature of the Ku Klux Klan.  Morningside - An FBI Investigation and a Hole in the Story Aran's latest book, Morningside, is about the Greensboro shooting investigation, which he gained access to through interviews with FBI agent Cecil Moses. Moses provided valuable insights into the FBI's perspective and the importance of the Greensboro investigation in reclaiming some esteem in American society. The book also explores the truth and reconciliation process, which was the first place in the United States to bring the South African model to work out the events surrounding the shooting. Aran found that there was a misunderstanding about the history that still keeps people in Greensboro divided. He discovered that the narratives set about who's to blame for the shooting were deeply entrenched within the social community and the extent to which access to one's tribe depends on adhering to a certain narrative. This information was extremely informative and showed how difficult some divides are and how entrenched they are. Aran believes that much work needs to be done to work out these hermetic narratives that keep people on different sides of important historical moments. He believes that the book will help readers understand the complex and interconnected nature of the Greensboro shooting and the ongoing struggle to reconcile different perspectives on important historical moments. Harvard Professors and Courses of Influence Aran discusses his experiences at Harvard and how his fellow students and friends were hugely influential. He highlights three standout professors who made interdisciplinary connections in his work, which appealed to his sensibility: Stephen J. Gould, Philip Fisher in the English Department, and Bradley Epps in the Romance Language Department. Children's flight of hope is a nonprofit organization based here in sunny North Carolina, which has a mission of providing flights for essential, specialized life changing and life saving medical care for children in need, these flights are amazing in that they bring children who otherwise might not be able to travel to centers of excellence around the United States, where they can receive innovative, cutting edge and in some cases, miraculous care. These flights are provided to children and their families at no cost, which goes a huge way toward easing the emotional and financial burden on families. When author Caitlin Shetterly saw an influx of license plates from Massachusetts and New York arrive in her home state of Maine during the pandemic, inspiration struck for her debut novel. Pete and Alice in Maine follows a couple that moves the family out of New York City during the initial COVID-19 scare — but finds the baggage from Pete's affair and Alice's questions about her purpose follow them. In today's episode, Shetterly speaks with NPR's Scott Simon about the very complicated idea of forgiveness, and how it eludes both of her characters.

Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Who Helped Win the Space Race is a 2016 nonfiction book written by Margot Lee Shetterly. Shetterly started working on the book in 2010. The book takes place from the 1930s through the 1960s when some viewed women as inferior to men. The biographical text follows the lives of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, three mathematicians who worked as computers (then a job description) at NASA, during the space race. They overcame discrimination there, as women and as African Americans. Also featured is Christine Darden, who was the first African-American woman to be promoted into the Senior Executive Service for her work in researching supersonic flight and sonic booms.

Climate change, global warming, conservation, pollution are at the heart of the conversation when Halli visits with two authors who have spent years studying the subjects, Susan Hand Shatterly whose delightful new book is SEAWEED CHRONICLES, A WORLD AT THE WATER'S EDGE, and with journalist Earl Swift, whose new book is the riveting CHESAPEAKE REQUIEM, A YEAR WITH THE WATERMEN OF VANISHING TANGIER ISLAND, the podcast posted 3 pm ET at Halli Casser-Jayne dot com.For much of the past two years, award-winning journalist Earl Swift lived and reported on a tiny island in Virginia. The resulting book, CHESAPEAKE REQUIEM, A YEAR WITH THE WATERMAN OF VANISHING TANGIER ISLAND, is an elegiac portrait of an isolated community, a sweeping natural history of an extraordinary ecosystem, and a timely meditation on dire environmental realities that extend far beyond the shores of Tangier -- which seems likely to succumb first among U.S. towns to the effects of climate change. First mapped by Jon Smith in 1608, settled during the Revolution, the tiny sliver of mud and marsh is home to 470 hardy people who live with one foot on the twenty-first century and another in times long passed. They are separated from their countrymen by twelve miles of often tempestuous water -- water that for generations has made Tangier a chief source for the prized Chesapeake Bay blue crab. But the very water that has long sustained Tangier now erases it day by day. Experts believe that barring heroic intervention by the federal government, islanders will soon be forced to abandon their homes. And the question remains should the federal government save this tiny island or surrender it to the sea. After all, thousands of American communities are being swallowed up by the sea. The American government can't save them all.In SEAWEED CHRONICLES Susan Hand Shetterly pulls back the curtain on the hidden world of seaweed. Did I say seaweed? Yes that is correct. Seaweed, not a weed at all, is one sexy little algae. It is ancient and basic, a testament to the tenacious beginnings of life on earth and “Why wouldn't seaweeds be a protean life source for the lives that have evolved since?” Shetterly asks in her new book small in size and large in lyrical prose. Shetterly explores all the wonders of the natural world anew through a richly informative and astonishingly elegant storytelling. Through her own research and through interviews, she offers a look into the extraordinary life cycle of seaweed, teaching readers about its role in local environments and its interconnected global significance. Shetterly also introduces us to the people and communities that depend on seaweed—and how they are working to protect this critical natural resource. Most importantly, Shetterly examines the big questions of conservation that have come to light. “What must remain wild for the health of the planet, and what can we responsibly take, as we face climate change and diminishing natural resources?” she asks. Note, it's almost impossible to go through a day without encountering seaweed somewhere in your life, as you will soon discover.Climate change, global warming, the environment, conservation, seaweed, Tangier Island, Donald Trump the subjects of The Halli Casser-Jayne Show the podcast posted at Halli Casser-Jayne dot com.

Recorded by Matt Murphy Very lightly edited by Amy Browne This is a recording of the Americans Who Tell the Truth (AWTT) event to honoring Rob McCall at the unveiling of Robert Shetterly’s new portrait of him, at the Blue Hill Public Library on May 12th, 2018. (NOTE: The recording starts with a few minutes of singing that is partially off mic. Stick with it because the audio quality improves significantly after those first few minutes). Rob McCall is the host of “Awanadjo Almanack”. a WERU classic. Listen here: WERU’s Awanadjo Almanack Archives) He is greatly admired in this area and beyond as the pastor (retired in 2014) of the First Congregational Church in Blue Hill and as the writer and voice of the popular Awanadjo Almanack, a bi-weekly commentary of insight into nature, political opinion through nature’s lens, and musings into all things spiritual and poetical. McCall says, “The Almanack is devoted to feeling at home in nature and breaking down the wall of hostility between us and the rest of creation.” The Americans Who Tell the Truth portraits — now numbering over 235 — travel to schools, colleges, museums, churches and libraries all over the United States to promote engaged and courageous citizenship. “Rob McCall’s portrait will be a great addition to this project,” Shetterly says. “And I know of no greater contemporary nature writer and no greater source of wisdom for how we must think of ourselves in relation to nature if we want to survive on this planet.”

Our special guest on this edition of the Sauropodcast is Margot Lee Shetterly. Her best-selling book, “Hidden Figures,” and the Oscar-nominated movie it inspired tell the previously unknown story of an extraordinary group of female African-American mathematicians, known as human computers, whose work at NASA in the early days of the space race helped the first astronauts reach orbit and return safely to Earth. Ms. Shetterly recently received the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, which honors authors who help improve public understanding of issues of race and diversity. Our interview took place in Cleveland, where she attended the award ceremony. To watch a video of the interview, visit cmnh.org/Sauropodcast.

We have more choices for our Thanksgiving meal than the Pilgrims could have dreamed of. But did we make the right choice when we decided to breed traits like herbicide resistance into some of our most common crops? And should we have the right to know when we’re buying foods made with genetic engineering? We hear from both sides of the GMO debate. Later, we visit an innovative policing program that changes the relationship between police and people with opioid addiction. Plus, a reporter interviews one (in)famous pilgrim, and a tribe welcomes visitors to a new cultural district on Martha’s Vineyard. Sweet corn that you buy at the farm stand or supermarket in the summer is not genetically modified. But genetically engineered corn is used as an additive in processed foods and included in livestock feed. (Credit: United Soybean Board) Engineered Writer Caitlin Shetterly suffered for years with a series of  puzzling symptoms: constant colds, tingling and numbness, rashes, and all-over pain and weakness. She tried every treatment she could find, with no relief. That's until an allergist recommended she tried eliminating GMO corn from her diet. She managed to do so, and her health improved. That's what set Shetterly off on a journey — interviewing farmers, scientists, and activists — that led to her recent book, Modified: GMOs and the Threat to Our Food, Our Land, Our Future.  It’s difficult for consumers to make informed decisions on the safety of GMOs, because most of the research is either carried out by or funded by companies like Monsanto, which manufacture the modified seeds, says Shetterly. A report published this May from the National Academies of Sciences found GMO foods to be safe. However, the report recommended testing GMO crops for residue from glyphosate, the main ingredient in the herbicide Roundup (which is routinely sprayed on GMO crops, since they are bred to be immune to the weedkiller). The WHO’s cancer agency last year classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic.” This year, though, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation and a different WHO body declared glyphosate “unlikely to pose a carcinogenic risk to humans” through our food. Campbell’s says it wants to be transparent about the GMO ingredients used in its foods, regardless of legal requirements. (Credit: Kathleen Masterson/ VPR) With all of this confusing information, you might want to play it safe by avoiding genetically modified ingredients. Vermont, Connecticut, and Maine all have GMO labeling laws on the books. But federal legislation signed by President Barack Obama in July nullified the state laws. And advocates complain the federal law does not go far enough. To break down the politics and economics of the GMO debate, Vermont Public Radio reporter Kathleen Masterson joins us. Something Totally Different John Rosenthal, left, co-founded the Police Assisted Addiction Recovery program in Gloucester, Mass. Steve Lesnikoski, right, was his first client. (Credit: Kristin Gourlay/ RIPR) “You have to be in this absolute desperate state and just devoid of humanity to really change. And that's where I was. I was dead inside. And I saw this beacon of light all the way across the country, and I was like, why not?” – Steve Lesnikoski, former heroin user The opioid addiction crisis in New England has physicians, community care-givers, and addiction treatment professionals scrambling to respond. Police departments are responding as well. Many have added the overdose rescue drug, Narcan, to their tool belts. Others have stepped up efforts to prosecute heroin dealers. But in Gloucester, Massachusetts, there's a program that flips policing on its head to help addicts find treatment. Rhode Island Public Radio's Kristin Gourlay has the story. Find more of her reporting on RIPR’s health blog, The Pulse. Legacies Tourists walk through the Shops at Aquinnah, part of the newly established Aquinnah Cultural District on Martha’s Vineyard. (Credit: Andrea Shea/WBUR) Aquinnah Wampanoag tribal member Berta Welch is owner of the Stony Creek Gift Shop in Aquinnah, on Martha’s Vineyard. The shop originally opened 75 years ago. (Credit: Andrea Shea/ WBUR) Even though the Aquinnah Wampanoag tribe has lived on Martha's Vineyard for more than 10,000 years, tourists who flock to the island don't always know about or get to experience the rich history. But now people from the tribe and the town of Aquinnah are working together to tell that story — and to boost the local economy — with a new, state-designated cultural district. WBUR reporter Andrea Shea takes us there. Find a text version of Andrea’s report along with photos at WBUR’s ARTery. Buddy Tripp, a Myles Standish reenactor at Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth, Mass. “I am afraid of nothing but God,” Tripp tells reporter Annie Sinsabaugh, in character. (Credit: Annie Sinsabaugh/ Transom Story Workshop) Whether it's civil war generals depicted in town square statues in the South, or the controversy over Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill, Americans are grappling with the complicated history of iconic figures. The Myles Standish Monument in Duxbury, Mass. (Credit: Scott Christy) New England is no exception. At Yale University, students have protested a dorm named after John C. Calhoun, a former U.S. Senator, Vice President, and supporter of slavery. In the state of Vermont and the city of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Columbus Day is now Indigenous People's Day. Reporter Annie Sinsabaugh wonders if the same scrutiny should be applied to a man seen as a hero to the pilgrims: Myles Standish. Her story was reported as part of the Transom Story Workshop. Americans Who Tell the Truth is an exhibition created by Maine artist, Robert Shetterly, of 50 oil portraits of people such as Martin Luther King Jr., Noam Chomsky, Margaret Chase Smith, Mark Twain, Chief Joseph and Samantha Smith with accompanying biographical material. Shetterly has written of his subjects that they "allowed me to draw strength from this community of truth tellers, finding in them the courage, honesty, tolerance, generosity, wisdom and compassion that have made our country strong." These historical and present-day Americans have dared to speak out about important subjects such as democracy, war and peace, the environment, the rights of women, racial injustice, media and out countrys role in the world. This exhibition offers us an opportunity, using an artistic lens, to study history, debate timely issues and the importance of patriots in our midst.
