Welcome to another episode of The Coral Capital Podcast, a show where we bring on guests from tech, business, politics, and culture to talk about all things Japan. In this episode, we're joined by Gen Isayama, General Partner & CEO of WiL—a venture capital firm that's redefining how innovation happens in Japan. Unlike traditional VCs, WiL doesn't just invest—they educate, incubate, and leverage the power of their corporate-based LP network to accelerate the growth of their companies as they expand globally, with a particular focus on Japan. Before launching WiL in 2013, Gen spent a decade investing at DCM. But when he looked at Japan, he saw a broken system—where startups struggled to scale, corporates hesitated to embrace change, and innovation lagged behind. Instead of copying the Silicon Valley model, he built something new: a VC firm designed to unlock Japan's vast corporate resources—capital, talent, and technology—by pushing enterprises toward entrepreneurship.WiL has since backed startups in Japan like Mercari, Raksul, and Retty, as well as Wise, Asana, and Canva in the US, with a team operating across Tokyo and Silicon Valley.Below are highlights from this episode:WiL operates on three pillars:Business Creation: Helping large Japanese corporations spin out or incubate startups internally.Education: Training corporates to adopt a startup mindset and providing connectivity between startups and the corporate ecosystem.Investment: Backing startups at various stages, with a focus on Japanese startups and global startups expanding into the Japan market. Ten years ago, Japanese corporates were hesitant to engage with startups, but today they have become increasingly open to partnering with and acquiring them.Large corporations compete with one another in adopting new technologies, creating a domino effect in innovation. The success of a corporate spinout depends on its leadership, not just the technology.WiL leverages its U.S. investments for faster scaling and greater liquidity, while Japan is still evolving toward a more liquid market with larger, multi-billion-dollar exits.Instead of competing for early-stage deals, WiL co-invests with leading global firms at the mid- to growth-stage, offering support for expansion into Japan.WiL conducts market testing through corporate pitch events for global startups, identifying strong local demand before committing to an investment.Emerging Opportunities in Japan: The aging society is driving demand for healthtech and elderly care, while AI integration in manufacturing and robotics presents a major growth area. Additionally, Japan's rich IP assets (anime, manga, food) offer untapped potential for global monetization beyond traditional licensing.-----For founder's building Japan's next legendary companies, reach out to us here: https://coralcap.co/contact-startups/If you're interested in joining a Coral startup join our talent network here: https://coralcap.co/coral-careers/

This episode contains spoilers of the Attack on Titan series.Kazuma Hashimoto returns to the show to discuss Attack on Titan, a popular manga and anime series created by Hajime Isayama. This is the first installment of a mini-series on art and politics, where we will critically analyze the role of art in promoting Japanese imperialism and how we can revolutionize art in service of the people.Kazuma is a media critic, translator, and journalist. He authored many articles including “Attack on Titan Couldn't Escape Controversy in the End: Looking at the Legacy the Manga Leaves Behind” published by Polygon in 2021.The Attack on Titan franchise received critical attention for tweets posted by a now private Twitter account that allegedly belonged to Isayama, which glorified Japanese imperialism and the colonization of Korea prior to the end of WWII. While Isayama's association with the Twitter account is not empirically proven, he has expressed admiration for historical figures and events in his blog that indicates his conservative political leanings. In this episode, however, rather than focusing on Isayama's own political views, we focus primarily on the form and content of the franchise itself, and how they function as a conveyor of bourgeois ideology.  We talk about how the post-apocalyptic sci-fi genre reinforces the social anxiety caused by the crisis of capitalism and the role of music in the emotional appeal of the series. We dissect the reactionary narrative of the series, specifically its colonial and pro-war messaging, as well as a pessimistic view of humanity it puts forward. We discuss what it means to consume this content during Japan's turn to re-militarization and complicity in the ongoing genocide in Palestine, and how film and arts can either reproduce the bourgeois ideology or challenge it by appropriating these art forms for the liberation of the working class and oppressed peoples. We recorded this interview in December 2023 shortly after the conclusion of the anime series, but what this franchise represents and stands for remains relevant to this day and the franchise itself is not going away as the final episode is getting a theatrical release this November.Intro: Cielo by Huma HumaOutro: 歴史 history by Danny Jin (The video includes an English translation of the lyrics in the description)Support the show

We review Attack on Titan: Children of the Forest (E72). This emotional episode centers around love, loss, and betrayal. A perfect example of Isayama's brilliant writing, we discuss how one character's unexpected death has a lasting impact on the rest of the story. Every era of anime has just a few shows that are so influential, they're granted the title of “anime classic.” Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) could very well be that, and to celebrate the final season we're reviewing every single episode on Strictly Anime! Each podcast episode will release every Wednesday following the new episode of AoT. This is in addition to our regular schedule for Strictly Anime.

Attack on Titan, or Shingeki no Kyojin, is the anime that we are covering in this episode of our Podcast. Does it suck? This review isn't really a review, but it is our opinions on the manga. The world loves this series! They're crazy about it! And we.. are not. Well, Weeb 101 always has a different take on things and here we are! We're fighting against the biggest (?) series of 2021! Season 4 of AoT is still not fully out and we are already here to insult everything you love about this series. Please don't cancel us! It's just an opinion. TL;DR of the video: We like Attack on Titan and the story behind it. We're more turned off by the fanbase than anything. We really think it was a good story that got lost on the way due to terms like "genius" being thrown about and force on Isayama. This led to intense pressure on the mangaka to actually do something that would surpass all the levels that he already reached with the manga. In fact, every little thing seems to be taken and made into a huge matter by the fanbase. A simple reference to Hallucigenia became a thing that was wondered upon and people ended up saying, "Isayama is God. He has something planned" It's a reference, and a good one, but it is overhyped by the fans. We would rate Attack on Titan higher if the fanbase wasn't toxic. As usual, spoilers ahead! (The original Japanese was published in Big Comic magazine between 1998 and 1999.) It's the story of Hiroshi Nakahara, a 48-year-old salaryman with an uninspired life, and who finds himself mysteriously transformed -- or transported? -- into his 14-year-old self. This is the same period of his life when his father abandoned his family. The guys discuss A Distant Neighborhood as a quasi-time travel narrative, but definitely not science fiction. In fact, Derek reads this text through the lens of the romance tradition, à la Horace Walpole and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Shea enjoys to story, but he feels that the premise may be a little too loaded and that Taniguchi at times relies too much on telling and not showing. Next they turn to a very different kind of book, Kodansha Comic's Attach on Titan Anthology. This is similar to a text that the guys discussed last month, Neo Parasyte F, an anthology of new works based on and inspired by a previous manga property, in this case Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan (which began in 2009). However in contrast to the Parasyte homage, this collection is made up of work written and drawn by a variety of Western creators. Although the collection resonates differently with each -- Derek tends to like it, as a whole, better than Shea -- both of the guys can agree on some of the anthology's highlights. These include Ronald Wimberly's "Bahamut"; Asaf and Tomer Hanuka's "Memory Maze"; Rhianna Pratchett, Ben Applegate, and Jorge Corona's "Skies Above"; and Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer's "Attack on Attack on Titan." But really, every contribution to this collection is worth reading. As the guys point out, one of the beauties of this anthology is that its eclectic styles reflect the broad and diverse readership to which Isayama's series appeals.
