Caregiving rarely arrives with a manual. When Megan Taniguchi's grandmother survived a heart attack and then a stroke, Megan walked away from her job, moved in, and learned how to keep her family together—one blood pressure reading, one bath, one prayer at a time. We invited Megan back to share the unfiltered truth: the daily routines that stabilize fragile health, the medical skills she picked up from generous nurses and a rare doctor who took time to teach, and the mistakes that became lessons, like how an overstrict diet can send sodium and potassium spinning. We dig into what dignity really means when care gets intimate, how tempers cool and repairs happen fast, and why a tight, three-person unit—grandma, mom, and son—can become a quiet fortress. Megan opens up about single motherhood, the logistics and cost of youth sports, and the creative fundraising it takes to show up on the sidelines without dropping the ball at home. Along the way, she describes how therapy, small social moments, and candid communication keep her from burning out, and how simple systems—pill organizers, shared calendars, visible checklists—turn chaos into a plan.Faith threads through every scene. After years of drifting, Megan returned to church, chose re-baptism, and started talking to God daily. Not ritual for ritual's sake, but a living relationship that reshaped how she sees responsibility, provision, and endurance. That shift didn't erase the hard parts; it gave them meaning. The episode is a guide for caregivers, single parents, and anyone standing at the edge of a hard decision, offering practical caregiving tips, mental health tools, and a reminder to say thank you now, not later. If this conversation moved you, tap follow, share it with someone carrying a heavy load, and leave a review with your best caregiving tip so others can learn from you too.

This week Tomohiko Taniguchi - a former advisor to the Japanese Prime Minister- dropped by. Hosts Mitsuaki Sawano, MD, co-host Shun Kohsaka, MD, and Nobuhiro Ikemura, MD, welcome Tomohiko Taniguchi, MD, from Kobe City Medical Center General Hospital, to discuss findings from the CURRENT AS Registry-2 on low-gradient severe aortic stenosis (AS). Based on data from over 3,300 patients across 21 Japanese centers, the study categorized AS into four hemodynamic subtypes, revealing that low-gradient AS with reduced LVEF had the poorest prognosis, paradoxical LFLG AS was associated with high rates of atrial fibrillation and advanced cardiac damage despite low valve calcification, and normal-flow LG AS frequently exceeded guideline-based calcification thresholds despite being labeled as moderate. Dr. Taniguchi emphasizes the need to revise conventional illustrations of AS subtypes by incorporating cardiac damage and frailty and underscores the importance of proper statistical interpretation in subgroup analyses.

Since her first release back in 2018, Risa has attracted high profile interest from A-list players Amelie Lens, Dense & Pika, Pan Pot, Perc and Daniel Avery; has hit the Top 5 of the Beatport's Leftfield Techno Chart and played everywhere from De Marktkantine in Amsterdam to Watergate in Berlin, and of course all the most revered spaces all across Japan including Contact, Womb, and Vent. Despite the pandemic, the recent years have proven to be a high watermark for Risa as she has delivered a continuous flow of new music, primarily on Pan Pot's Second State and on Dense & Pika's Kneaded Pains. With both of these mighty techno duos giving Risa their support and platforms, it has enabled her to start taking her first major footsteps into Europe, picking up her first headline bookings there. In 2022, she teams up for the first time together with Black Asteroid, a former engineer for Prince, and the duo will deliver three gritty, hard-hitting techno tracks on Chris Liebing's CLR. ⚡️Like the Show? In this globe-trotting, Japanofilic conversation with Awamori champion Jeremy Webb of Webb's Grainworks, some of the topics we discuss include: The technical definition of Awamori, especially with respect to how its distillate base, koji treatment, and aging practices differentiate it from Shochu and Japanese Whisky. How the history and culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom - a nation separate from the rest of Japan until the late 1800s - impacted how Awamori developed in relation to other traditional Asian spirits. The special role that materials like ceramics and stainless steel play in the production and service of Awamori. Why Jeremy decided that now is the time to import, blend, and spread the good news of Awamori in the US Market and how his flagship product, Taniguchi Awamori, took home the gold at the 2024 ADI International Spirits Competition. And the best ways to enjoy Awamori, both in a spirits-and-food pairing context and as an ingredient in classic and original cocktails. Along the way, we explore why Okinawans aren't impressed by American copper stills, Awamori's pivotal role in the development of the martial art, Karate, the fun and surprising story behind the name “Taniguchi,” and much, much more.

In honour of Canadian Multiculturalism Day, which comes around each year on June 27, on VIEW to the U, we are talking about identity that directly correlates to the language that we use. On this episode, featured guest, Professor Ai Taniguchi talks about her work as a linguist in UTM's Department of Language Studies, as well as her art, which animates and illustrates much of her scholarly pursuits. Ai specializes in semantics and pragmatics – for those of us who need a primer, or a refresher, as the case may be - she explains both over the course of this interview. But she also goes into detail about the graphics-based project she spearheaded: L'IMAGE, which stands for Language, Identity, Multiculturalism and Global Empowerment. L'IMAGE is a project that brings the lived experiences of multilingual UofT students, both domestic and international, to life in the form of comics. In our chat, she is also very candid speaking about her recent diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder – ADHD for short. Ai feels that neurodiversity, which basically means a person's brain works differently than someone with a brain and way of learning that is considered “neurotypical,” should be discussed more often and be less stigmatized. She says it is her own neurodiversity that has fed her creativity and fuelled her art and innovative pursuits, like the L'IMAGE project. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.03.02.529652v1?rss=1 Authors: Xing, H., Taniguchi, R., Khusainov, I., Kreysing, J. P., Welsch, S., Turonova, B., Beck, M. Abstract: Ribosomes catalyze protein synthesis by cycling through various functional states. These states have been extensively characterized in vitro, yet their distribution in actively translating human cells remains elusive. Here, we optimized a cryo-electron tomography-based approach and resolved ribosome structures inside human cells with a local resolution of up to 2.5 angstroms. These structures revealed the distribution of functional states of the elongation cycle, a Z tRNA binding site and the dynamics of ribosome expansion segments. In addition, we visualized structures of Homoharringtonine, a drug for chronic myeloid leukemia treatment, within the active site of the ribosome and found that its binding reshaped the landscape of translation. Overall, our work demonstrates that structural dynamics and drug effects can be assessed at near-atomic detail within human cells. Copy rights belong to original authors. A Zoo in Winter by Jiro Taniguchi is an engrossing semi-autobiographical coming of age story about breaking into the manga industry. It's a one-volume manga that we warmly recommend. In this episode, we talk a bit about Taniguchi's work and our familiarity with him before going into our book discussion. This is an excellent comic that we hope you check out! It's another episode for our #mangamenagerie! Risa Taniguchi is arriving at the forefront of the dark techno wave that has washed over the underground in recent years. The Tokyo born - and based - artist has spent the last four years cultivating a lo-fi sound of distorted textures, fizzing synths and a quietly burning energy, which consumes all who hear it. Preferring to play sets which are "late night, for the weirdos", Risa has a knack for getting crowds in a nocturnal trance, before delivering shocks and surprises with a curious motif or unpredictable element. For those who like to cut loose in a dark environment, she is the perfect selector. In the studio as well as the club, Risa focuses on the drums, programming kicks that bring visceral and often aggressive thrills next to a uniquely addictive layer of well designed snares and hi hats. Her signature has become her own subtle and intriguing vocal samples, best heard on Slipped My Mind and Enclozed. She adds layers of acid bass and an always raw, edgy aesthetic. Having experienced them first hand whilst living in London, in 2010, Risa also has an enduring love of underground UK bass sounds, which can be heard in many of her tracks. The multi-talented act is also formally trained and a skilled player of the piano, who continues to play daily. She is a "classical music nerd" too, but of course prefers to explore the minor rather than major end of the scales. Since her first release back in 2018, Risa has attracted high profile interest from A-list players Amelie Lens, Dense & Pika, Pan Pot, Perc and Daniel Avery; has hit the Top 5 of the Beatport's Leftfield Techno Chart and played everywhere from SXSW Festival in the US to De Marktkantine in Amsterdam, Watergate in Berlin and of course all the most revered spaces all across Japan including Contact, Womb, and Vent. Despite the pandemic, 2020 has proven to be a high watermark for Risa as she has delivered a continuous flow of new music, primarily on Pan Pot's Second State and on Dense & Pika's Kneaded Pains. With both of these mighty techno duos giving Risa their support and platforms, it has enabled her to start taking her first major footsteps into Europe, picking up her first headline bookings in Hungary and the UK. BRYAN BLACK aka BLACK ASTEROID started his music career as a sound designer and keyboard tech for PRINCE at PAISLEY PARK STUDIOS in his hometown of Minneapolis. While working for Prince, black proceeded to create his own music- some of the most innovative techno records released on labels such as MUTE and KOMPAKT. These records caught the ear of MARTIN GORE from DEPECHE MODE. Soon after, Black was on tour with Depeche Mode with his band MOTOR, and recording songs with Martin Gore at his home studio in Santa Barbara and Berlin. Together Black and Gore wrote a top 40 single “Man Made Machine”. In 2011 the debut BLACK ASTEROID single, “Engine 1” introduced Black Asteroid to the world, and introduced an industrial rock sound into techno that quickly took off, propelling Black to play at clubs such as Berghain, Fabric London and major festivals. The focus was in favor of song structures and vocals in a techno template. After a string of EPs, the debut album “Thrust” was released in 2017 with many cross over singles, featuring vocals from ZOLA JESUS, COLD CAVE and MICHELE LAMY. The fashion designer RICK OWENS picked up on what was happening, and used Black's music for his runway shows in Paris. The two quickly became friends and collaborators. Currently Black Asteroid is prepping a new album and several EPs, in addition to working in the fashion world, having just released a collection of sunglasses with Valley Eyewear, and music for Raf Simons and Rick Owens.

Host Alex Nasa and Tyler Taniguchi have known each other since third grade! They reconnect in today's episode as our guest shares some memories from high school, his undergrad experience at the University of Washington, and an unforgettable trip to Zimbabwe for three weeks.
As a native of Hawaii, Hokule'a Taniguchi wasn't quite ready for all that the Wisconsin winter had to offer...it was intense. Hokule'a, or Hoku for short, didn't own a car and she'd been biking to work in the snow...which was, by all accounts, a miserable experience. Hoku's new friend and co-worker, Haley Bridges, took note of Hoku's transportation situation and Haley would offer her rides whenever possible. But, of course, schedules don't always match up, so there were still many snowy bike rides in Hoku's life. At least that was true until December when a surprise Christmas raffle presented the opportunity for life-changing generosity. Today's quick hit of kindness is a sweet story of teenage besties and a great lesson on how true winners are made. ----- Music for Helpful Humans is provided by the amazing K. Michelle Dubois. Time Codes: 00:00:28 - Introduction 00:02:25 - Catching up after Thanksgiving 00:05:18 - A Distant Neighborhood: Complete Edition 00:54:48 - Attack on Titan Anthology 01:46:53 - Wrap up 01:47:44 - Contact us For the month of November, Shea and Derek get together to discuss to two recent manga publications, although the first text they cover is not entirely new. Jiro Taniguchi's A Distant Neighborhood: Complete Edition brings together the two-volume English editions originally published by Fanfare/Ponent Mon in 2009. (The original Japanese was published in Big Comic magazine between 1998 and 1999.) It's the story of Hiroshi Nakahara, a 48-year-old salaryman with an uninspired life, and who finds himself mysteriously transformed -- or transported? -- into his 14-year-old self. This is the same period of his life when his father abandoned his family. The guys discuss A Distant Neighborhood as a quasi-time travel narrative, but definitely not science fiction. In fact, Derek reads this text through the lens of the romance tradition, à la Horace Walpole and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Shea enjoys to story, but he feels that the premise may be a little too loaded and that Taniguchi at times relies too much on telling and not showing. Next they turn to a very different kind of book, Kodansha Comic's Attach on Titan Anthology. This is similar to a text that the guys discussed last month, Neo Parasyte F, an anthology of new works based on and inspired by a previous manga property, in this case Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan (which began in 2009). However in contrast to the Parasyte homage, this collection is made up of work written and drawn by a variety of Western creators. Although the collection resonates differently with each -- Derek tends to like it, as a whole, better than Shea -- both of the guys can agree on some of the anthology's highlights. These include Ronald Wimberly's "Bahamut"; Asaf and Tomer Hanuka's "Memory Maze"; Rhianna Pratchett, Ben Applegate, and Jorge Corona's "Skies Above"; and Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer's "Attack on Attack on Titan." But really, every contribution to this collection is worth reading. As the guys point out, one of the beauties of this anthology is that its eclectic styles reflect the broad and diverse readership to which Isayama's series appeals.
