A Zoo in Winter by Jiro Taniguchi is an engrossing semi-autobiographical coming of age story about breaking into the manga industry. It's a one-volume manga that we warmly recommend. In a move similar to 2019's "I Lost My Body," the French-language animated film based on the Japanese manga series of the same name by Jiro Taniguchi called "The Summit Of The Gods," premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival and was later acquired by Netflix. It's a gorgeously animated film filled with intense drama and universal themes. The writer and director, Patrick Imbert, was kind enough to spend time talking with me about his journey in making the film and all of the meticulous care that goes into crafting an animated film. This week, we're reading THE SUMMIT OF THE GODS (神々の山嶺, Kamigami no Itadaki) - an early 2000s manga by Jiro Taniguchi, based on a novel and script by Baku Yumemakura. The series traces several climbers' journeys across decades around the world - from the European Alps, to the peaks of Japan, to the Himalayas of Nepal and Tibet - all bookended by the greatest summit - Everest. The story is told from the modern perspective of Fukamachi, a photojournalist who finds a camera which may change the history of mountaineering...as it may belong to the famed climber George Mallory, who went missing climbing Everest, which history shows as being first summited by Sir Edmund Hillary some 30 years after Mallory's disappearance At the center of all of this is a mysteriously obstinate climber, Joji Habu, or Binka Sap as he is known to the Nepalese Sherpa community. The critically acclaimed series was actually recently adapted to an animated feature that debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in France, which is NOT why I invited my favorite Frenchman Francois to the pod...

En 2018, nous célébrons les 160 ans des relations diplomatiques entre la France et le Japon, ainsi que les 50 ans de la disparition de Foujita. Soit deux bonnes raisons pour nous d'aborder la cuisine d'un pays qui nous fascine : le Japanistan (aussi connu sous le nom de Japon). Como sabéis, cada cinco números, le dedamos la sección principal a la literatura y en esta ocasión, os traigo a Harper Lee, la autora de “Matar a un ruiseñor”. Hablaremos de su vida, de la polémica que rodeo sus últimos años, de sus dos novelas y de la mítica película que adapta su obra maestra. Además, al final de la sección os leo el primer capítulo de “Matar a un ruiseñor”: En la sección “Giaccomic” mi buen amigo Giacco nos trae un programa completito con novedades de la semana, una noticia que os dejará boquiabiertos, un repaso de los premios Eisner y algo que os prometió en su momento y en lo que lleva trabajando desde entonces. Se trata ni más ni menos que del homenaje a Jiro Taniguchi, autor entre otros de “El almanaque de mi padre” y “Barrio lejano”. Por otro lado en la sección “El verso libre” retomamos las canciones con mensaje. Esas canciones que van más allá, hasta convertirse en himnos. En esta ocasión os traigo al catalán Lluis Llach y su mítica pieza de 1968, L'Estaca. Primero os la leeré en catalán, luego en castellano y finalmente escucharemos al maestro Llach. Una semana más tenemos que hablar de terrorismo machista en nuestra sección “A golpes de realidad”. También os cuento como fue el itinerario de los 3 neonazis que agredieron a un ciudadano en Bilbao hace unos días. Además por supuesto de todas las novedades de la “Operación Lezo” y otros casos de corrupción en los que están implicados los casi mil imputados del PP. Finalmente, en la sección “¿Qué fue de?” os traigo a la química española Maria Teresa Salazar, una de las pioneras en Químicas que trabajó en el laboratorio del Instituto Nacional de Física y Química, durante la Edad de Plata. Jiro Taniguchi, who created Kodoku no Gourmet, The Times of Botchan, and many more manga passed about today, Saturday the 11 th of February. He won many awards and was known for his line art and shading without ink. Crunchyroll has surpassed 1 million paid subscribers and has announced its own convention. Partnered with LeftField Media, the convention will be titles Crunchyroll Expo (CRX) and will be in Santa Clara from August 25 th -27 th . Seitokai Takuindomo has announced a new project along with a film. (The original Japanese was published in Big Comic magazine between 1998 and 1999.) It's the story of Hiroshi Nakahara, a 48-year-old salaryman with an uninspired life, and who finds himself mysteriously transformed -- or transported? -- into his 14-year-old self. This is the same period of his life when his father abandoned his family. The guys discuss A Distant Neighborhood as a quasi-time travel narrative, but definitely not science fiction. In fact, Derek reads this text through the lens of the romance tradition, à la Horace Walpole and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Shea enjoys to story, but he feels that the premise may be a little too loaded and that Taniguchi at times relies too much on telling and not showing. Next they turn to a very different kind of book, Kodansha Comic's Attach on Titan Anthology. This is similar to a text that the guys discussed last month, Neo Parasyte F, an anthology of new works based on and inspired by a previous manga property, in this case Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan (which began in 2009). However in contrast to the Parasyte homage, this collection is made up of work written and drawn by a variety of Western creators. Although the collection resonates differently with each -- Derek tends to like it, as a whole, better than Shea -- both of the guys can agree on some of the anthology's highlights. These include Ronald Wimberly's "Bahamut"; Asaf and Tomer Hanuka's "Memory Maze"; Rhianna Pratchett, Ben Applegate, and Jorge Corona's "Skies Above"; and Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer's "Attack on Attack on Titan." But really, every contribution to this collection is worth reading. As the guys point out, one of the beauties of this anthology is that its eclectic styles reflect the broad and diverse readership to which Isayama's series appeals.
