Cleo Sylvestre (1945-) is a woman of many firsts: she is the first Black woman to play a leading role at the National Theatre in London, one of the first Black actors to have a recurring role in a primetime British soap and one of the first Black Brits to release a single in 1964 – with none other than her friends, The Rolling Stones. The Guardian called her “the Black actor who should have been one of Britain's biggest stars”. So why isn't she a household name? Sylvestre was born in Euston, London, and attended Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts before launching into a life on stage and screen: she made her West End debut in 1964 alongside British acting legend Alec Guinness and went on to star in some of the definitive shows of the Sixties, those that put working class actors on TV for the first time, including visionary director Ken Loach's Up The Junction, Cathy Come Home and Poor Cow, as well as Doctor Who, Coronation Street and Crossroads. Like Dana Gillespie, who is also featured this season, Cleo hung out at the Marquee Club in Soho, which is where she met the Rolling Stones, who invited her to record the 1964 single, To Know Him Is To Love Him, while rock'and'roll royalty like Jimmy Page and the Hollies would often come for one of her mother's home cooked meals. It wasn't easy being one of the few Black women breaking through in the entertainment industry, as she explains, discussing race, resilience, rejection and wanting to pave the way for working class actors, as well as how she's returned to singing after 50 years with her blues alter ego, Honey B Mama. It's interesting to compare Cleo's and Dana's stories – they moved through the Swinging Sixties differently but have both ended up performing the blues later in life. And they didn't meet each other till later in life, either! If you liked this, listen to our PP Arnold episode, another singer who Mick Jagger was quite taken with early on… And you can catch Honey B Mama and her band playing at the Rosemary Branch Theatre in London, where Cleo served as co-director for 20 years. This episode was produced by Antonia Odunlami, and presented and exec-produced by Kate Hutchinson, with sound design by Hana Walker-Brown. Tracey Ullman was the first woman to be offered her own television sketch show – both in Britain and America – and has starred in film and television dramas alongside Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett and Hugh Grant. The Emmy-winning Tracey Ullman Show ran for four seasons in the US and provided the launch pad for the Simpsons. Tracey was born in Slough and as a child she would impersonate people and put on shows for the amusement of her mother after the death of her father. At 12 she won a scholarship to the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London and worked in repertory theatre and the West End in London before her television career took off. She was one of the stars of the BBC's primetime sketch show Three of a Kind alongside David Copperfield and a young Lenny Henry. In 1985 she moved to Los Angeles with her husband, the producer Allan McKeown, where her uncanny impressions of Americans from all walks of life won her acclaim and awards in equal measure. After the death of her husband Tracey returned to the UK in 2016 and was soon back on our screens in a new sketch series, Tracey Ullman's Show, which showcased her enduring talent for sending up the powerful and the famous, including Dame Judi Dench, Angela Merkel and Theresa May. In this episode Robert discusses the Meisner Technique its practise and place in the British Drama School with Dr Philippa Strandberg-Long.Philippa has published several excellent papers on the Meisner technique : Mapping Meisner – how Stanislavski's system influenced Meisner's process and why it matters to British Drama School training today and The reaction in counter-action: how Meisner technique and active analysis complement each other. Which can be found here : https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/20567790.2018.1437956https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/20567790.2019.1576114Philippa Strandberg-Long is an acting teacher, director and researcher, originally from Stockholm, Sweden. In 1998 she moved to London to undertake the BA Acting programme at Italia Conti Academy before going on to gain experience as both an actor and director within London's theatre world. In 2008 she decided to focus on the training process itself, and has since taught Stanislavski-based acting and scene study – as well as directed productions – at many of London's drama schools. In 2011 Philippa began her service in the Italia Conti faculty, which she continued for nearly a decade. During her time at Italia Conti she co-created their Foundation course programme, whilst undertaking practical research on the Meisner technique, devising and developing a number of her own exercises along with a pedagogical foundation to underpin the technique. Philippa received her MA in Actor Training from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in 2012, specialising in the teaching of the Meisner technique. In 2016 Philippa was awarded a full 3-year PhD scholarship from the University of Kent to study the Meisner technique and the psychology of attention. During this time, she combined her research activities with teaching and directing, allowing her to see the practical effects of her studies and providing valuable empirical data for her research. Philippa's doctorate was awarded in early 2020, and her research has significantly furthered our understanding of the Meisner technique and its interplay with attention, self-consciousness, action-perception theory and mind-wandering. Her articles have been published in the UK, Europe and the US, and some of them in association with practitioners such as the late William Esper and the renowned Stanislavski scholar Sharon Carnicke. In 2019 and 2020 Philippa was the Course Leader and Head of Acting of Fourth Monkey's two-year actor training programme – a programme underpinned by the ethos of Meisner's principles and the concept of ‘play'. She continues to develop both her research profile and her studio practice, always putting the individual's creative potential in focus. She is currently lead acting tutor on Rose Bruford's MA in Actor and Performance Training. Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&business=EKHEKXBAZBQG6¤cy_code=GBP)

Sunday Night StoriesThe Final MeetingWritten by Matt GopsillNarrated by Jess Lloyd-JonesHappy Sunday and happy August! Tonight we have Jess Lloyd Jones narrating another of Matt Gopsill’s wonderful poems. Here is The Final Meeting. Here’s a little about Matt..“My name is Matt and I am just a normal man with some wheels strapped to me. My background is in computing and I thought that was where my talents lied, but in my spare time I was writing poetry. Usually to get things off my chest and yes sometimes for valentines day! I was finding I really enjoyed writing and people loved what I had written so I semi secretly wrote more. Last July I went to the Word with someone who was performing and really enjoyed listening to the different genres and thought I am going to see if I can read one of mine. Rob Gee was host so I kind of knew him and he said course. So I was a little nervous because I use a computer to talk for me and I had never spoken a poem out loud, it went ok and I got a round of applause! I had to tell everyone I was writing poetry and come out then.My writing has come on so much from then in quality and quantity, writing poetry about any topic being funny or serious. I just wait for inspiration to come and I never know what poetry I am going to write next which is quite exciting. I have now set up a blog called partdalek.com and looking for places to publish my work.”To keep up to date with Matt's work you can visit his blog www.partdalek.comJess studied acting at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts and is currently based in Oxfordshire.
