Close encounters of the creature kind

Paws and Reflect

First drafted in Everglades National Park, after a week of mesmerizing nature experiences.Paddling a designated mangrove trail, I cringe as our inflatable kayak rubs the bottom of the pond. “We're stirring up the mud,” I worry aloud. “How many organisms call this mud home?” Sean shakes his head.We turn around shortly after. By this point we've already seen five alligators (one swimming parallel to us, disquieting agility on full display) and a dozen birds and too many fish to count. I'm in awe that this has been our Monday morning activity.I'm also wondering if it should have been.So often close creature encounters fill us with wonder—they allow us to more fully appreciate our fellow animals. But they are also, so often, one sided. What does the cardinal get from me peering closely except a modicum of discomfort? The Florida tree snails are dormant for the winter so my photography (in theory) doesn't stir their slumber, but still—I am here, in their world, leaning in. And I am clumsy and species-centric and unable to coexist without inadvertent harm.“Oh no, you scared him,” Sean said of the small toad I tried so carefully to step around on yesterday's trail. “Shoot, she ran away,” I echoed about the anole I paused too long to observe. How much of these reactions is normal? Creatures move toward and away from each other all the time. Perhaps I am not adding to their stress (the alligators certainly seem unbothered by my presence in their swamp); perhaps it's self-aggrandizing to think so. But perhaps I am. Perhaps I am layering harm upon small harm, weaving fear deeper into their nervous systems, making their already fraught existence harder, all out of a desire to love them.Love can hurt. Especially when it comes from a person.Little Me developed so much respect for the natural world by engaging with the natural world. That's the justification for practices—some worse than others, certainly—at organizations from SeaWorld to the tiny elephant sanctuary I called home after graduating college. Where do we draw the line? On our guided night hike in the Everglades, I was thrilled to see a nightjar illuminated by the ranger's flashlight—but guilt pinged within me, too, at the creature's small form huddled in the beam. Would we, me and Sean and five middle-aged couples, have felt less inspired if we hadn't gotten to see up close? Would the bird have felt less scared?Whose experience is more important, and do they have to interfere with each other, and how can we ever understand costs and benefits? These questions are top of mind thanks in part to Nerdy About Nature's recent post on whether outdoor recreation is a form of resource extraction. He thinks it is, and I largely agree. I also agree with the article's top comment: “outdoor recreation is a gateway to caring about the planet,” writes Nick Costelloe. “The more people engage with natural spaces, the more they'll care about them—and the more willing they'll be to advocate for climate solutions.”I'm just not sure what, exactly, ethical engagement with nature spaces ought to look like. This past fall we drove up a steep, bumpy road to the most beautiful dispersed campsite we've ever seen overlooking the Great Tetons. We carefully followed every National Forest Service guideline. No campfires. Don't stay more than five nights. Drive on previously used roads. Pack in what you pack out; leave no trace.I grinned almost every minute we were there. I threw wide my arms and teared up at the sunrise and leashed Scout the second we saw another animal or person. But afterward, despite being a perfect stickler for the rules, I still had to ask: Is it truly possible to leave no trace? One morning a fox trotted along the edge of our site. They paused, head raised, before darting away down the mountain. Neither we nor our dog pursued this breathtaking creature—but the canid knew, unmistakably, that we were there. Every living thing nearby knew we were there. How much of my own joy (and make no mistake: I experienced bright, bursting, overwhelming joy) is worth native flora and fauna's discomfort? How much do NFS restrictions, even when meticulously observed, actually mitigate human impact? How much could I love that mountain—that view, those creatures—if I hadn't breathed their same air?I don't know. It's easy to preach platitudes about respecting the environment. (Pick up trash, be bear aware, don't bend the rules, do what the organizations in charge tell you to.) It's harder to trust that these actions are good enough. And everything is exacerbated by the crisis facing American public lands under our current administration, worsening, it seems, by the day: staffing cuts, hiring freezes, harrowing sound bites to “drill, baby, drill”.Never has holding great wonder—the kind that inspires us to care, that doesn't allow us not to give a damn—about natural spaces been more important. Never has asking how we skew the ratio toward much more awe than harm. This is a public episode. It's easy to forget who we really are, to rush through life without pausing to experience our true essence. Yet when we take this pause, we gain clarity, groundedness, and wisdom from which to respond to life wisely rather than reactively. Eckhart Tolle uses the phrases “Little Me” and "Deep I" to distinguish the part of you that runs around on the surface of life from the timeless presence at the core of your being. This guided visualization leads you down a hall of sheer silken rainbow veils that gently peel away the outer trappings of life and lead you to the doorway of your true self. It was never about the effing horse. There I said it. God bless that equine, her memory became the safe place for anger, fear, and rage along with a whole host of other big emotions and thoughts over which Little Me's mulled. “I just love the warmth of being in a cabaret. It's my favorite place to be next to a Broadway theatre. Maybe more so because you get food.” Multi-hyphenates don't always start as actors. Theatre multi-hyphenates find their way through multiple avenues and for Christine Pedi, The Lady of 1000 Voices, it started when she stumbled upon the radio station when she attended Fordham University studying communications.  After focusing on a radio career, she started in community theatre, eventually landing her turn at Forbidden Broadway. Then through a connection from Fordham, she was asked to interview at SiriusXM Radio. And now – Pedi is one of the pillars of our community connecting listeners of the radio to the insight of Broadway. Post pandemic, Pedi is also continuing her in person cabaret acts, with a massively funny new show at The Green Room 42, called The Pedi Party, which had a wonderfully successful first show on January. She will be appearing at TGR42 on February 20th and March 31st both at 9:30pm.  In this amazing episode, Pedi lets us in to great stories regarding Howard Stern, Joan Rivers, while dissecting the changes and fads of cabaret and sketch comedy, such as how it's moved from live performance to YouTube, and what forms a successful cabaret – or the “Drop Your Pants and Go” mentality. Pedi is also open about losing her eyesight over the years and shares what that means regarding performance and work opportunities. We also discuss the importance of taking care of yourself, a sense of belonging, and hustle.  “A lot of people your age don't think about taking care of themselves until they are my age and then you got a lot of catching up to do. But to be forced to really address things now will probably serve you better and probably save you aggravation on other fronts.”  Christine the “Lady of 1000 Voices" first discovered her talent for multiple personalities (Merman, Angela Lansbury, Bernadette Peters etc) through her long association with the legendary off Broadway revue FORBIDDEN BROADWAY. She received a Drama Desk nomination for her work in FORBIDDEN HOLLYWOOD (Liza, Rosie Perez, Judi Dench, Sharon Stone etc) as well as an LA Ovation & NAACP Award. She also brought her collection of Divas to off B'ways long running NEWSICAL the Musical and recently starred in and co-produced SPAMILTON: An American Parody written by Forbidden Broadway's creator Gerard Allessandrini. Broadway: Mama Morton (yes just one character...all night) in the 2nd longest running musical of all time CHICAGO, LITTLE ME with Martin Short & Faith Prince, directed by Rob Marshall, and opposite Liev Schreiber in Eric Bogosians TALK RADIO directed by Robert Falls. SIRIUS XM RADIO On Broadway host. On Saturday she and the "aMAHzing" Seth Rudetsky co-host the DUELING DIVAS. Her cabaret show GREAT DAMES has won the New York Bistro & Nitelife Awards and has played NYC, Los Angeles, London, South Africa & beyond. THERE'S NO BIZNESS LIKE SNOW BIZNESS her holiday show has been a seasonal staple in NYC since 2008. She's performed in that “cutie patootie” John McD's Cabaret Corner on the Rosie O'Donnell Show and sung in many major NYC venues & cruiseships including Birdland, Feinsteins/54 Below, The Iridium, The Metropolitan Room, The Algonquin, The Laurie Beechman, Avery Fisher Hall, Don't Tell Mamas...and the QE2...AND she's performed for President & Mrs Clinton (playing a singing HIllary!). The 53rd Annual Tony Awards were held at the Gershwin Theatre on June 6, 1999. Unlike every other award ceremony we've discussed in this miniseries, the show did not have a formal host. Heading into the ceremony, the closed Lincoln Center Theatre production of Parade led the pack with nine nominations. Following closely behind was the eventual winner for Best Musical: Fosse. Also in the running for Best Musical were It Ain't Nothin But The Blues and The Civil War with four and two nominations, respectively. In the race for Best Revival of a Musical were You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown and Little Me with four nominations, and Annie Get Your Gun with three nominations, followed by Peter Pan with a singular nomination, for Best Revival. The 1998-1999 Broadway season found itself in a very tumultuous time in US history. Smack-dab in the middle of President Bill Clinton's second term in office, domestically the country was facing a multitude of newsworthy events: among them were the impeachment and acquittal of said president in the scandal involving Monica Lewinsky, the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie, WY, and the mass school shooting in Columbine, CO that would sadly become the first of a number of school shootings in the nation, in what the Washington Post would eventually refer to as a “uniquely American crisis” in 2018. Abroad the world was embroiled in the Kosovo War, which permeated the American zeitgeist as well.

If you've ever felt like a fraud, second guessed if your work or something you had to share was good enough to be seen and heard or that you even know enough to be teaching something you've probably felt the effects of Imposter Syndrome. It's a real thing, and in this week's episode we are talking about what exactly Imposter Syndrome is, how it can really affect our businesses and life and some thoughts on how to push past to let your voice be heard and to serve others. The Definition of Imposter Syndrome Imposter Syndrome can be defined as "a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts their accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a 'fraud'" (Langford and Clance) Types of Imposter Syndrome Perfectionist - sets high expectations for themselves, if they don't all them they feel like a failure Expert - they need to know every piece of information, they are all trying to improve Natural Genius - when things usually come easy for them and now they are struggling with something Soloist - they feel like they have to accomplish everything on their own, they feel like a failure when they have to ask for help Superwoman/man - push themselves to work harder to prove themselves, they need to succeed in all aspects of life at all times Source for Types of Imposter Syndrome When We Start Something New Our Little Me Likes To Keep Us In Our Comfort Zone While Imposter Syndrome can creep up at any point while we are creating, doing , teaching or sharing, for us we have found it to be most present when we are beginning something new. Maybe we are taking on a new service, sharing something for the first time on social media or even taking on a life event for the first time like being a future mom. Whatever it may be, when we are first experiencing it ourselves, we won't feel as confident in sharing it with others because it is new to us as well. But as we remembered from reading January's book club read, Believe Bigger by Marshawn Evans Daniels, the feeling of fraud that creeps up in these moments is really your Little Me trying to keep you in your comfort zone, and that keeps you from reaching your greater potential. Imposter Syndrome Keeps You From Serving Others Too Think about it, by not sharing, what is someone missing out on hearing and learning from? The thought that we don't have anything to be said that hasn't already been said by someone else can keep someone from being served by you. We all have our own unique voice and ways about sharing something, and that may just be what a person who follows you needs. When you start to wonder if what you have to say is good enough to share or if people would even want to hear it, think about that. Who are you missing out on serving? Who are you missing out on connecting with? Shaunae shares how she created a post on Instagram sharing how she feels like a fraud almost every day and was blown away by the response it got and how many people it resonated with. We aren't alone in our struggles. Often our struggles are what can help connect us. If we share what we know and document our journey, really being authentic with our audience, they will be able to resonate with it. Imposter Syndrome is bound to creep up again, especially in new phases of life. But give yourself permission to be where you are at, wherever that is. Know that you are valuable, worthy and have something to share.
