Send us a textAfter a few years living in the US, Ashley Day is preparing to make a highly anticipated return to the UK stage at Manchester Opera House in Come Fall in Love - the Musical, an adaptation of DDLJ. The exciting new musical boasts a top tier creative including book & lyrics by Olivier Award winner Nell Benjamin, music by legendary composers Vishal Dadlani and Sheykhar Ravjiani and choreography by Olivier, Tony and Emmy Award winner Rob Ashford. The show will see Ashley taking on the role of Roger (Rog), a party-going, laid back guy opposite Jena Pandya's more serious Simran. Come Fall in Love is based on a record-breaking phenomenon that has taken India and the Middle East by storm, and this new adaptation is expected to have a similar effect when it arrives on the Manchester stage. In this brand new interview, Ashley Day sits down with us to tell us why this felt like the perfect project to reintroduce himself to musical theatre audiences. Having started his career 20 years ago in Matthew Bourne's The Nutcracker and as part of the original company of Mary Poppins, Ashley Day is known in the musical theatre community as one of a few true triple threats. Over the last 2 decades, he's taken on leading roles in shows like The Book of Mormon, An American in Paris and 42nd Street. In more recent years, Ashley was also a series regular in Dynasty and in our interview he opens up about his love life and how his recent marriage to fellow actor Adam Kaplan has changed him for the better. We also get to hear Ashley reflect on his remarkable career leading up to this point and discuss how the industry has transformed over his time working as one of the West End's most charming leading men. It's a fascinating conversation and we hope it won't be too long until we see Ashley Day treading the boards on UK shores in another hit show.Come Fall in Love opens at Manchester Opera House on 29th May and runs till 21 June 2025.Support the show

How to reduce hamstring injury risk with Matthew Bourne, Nick Court and Johan Lahti

Pacey Performance Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 16, 2025 55:10

In this episode of the Pacey Performance Podcast, Nick Court, Johan Lahti, and Matthew Bourne discuss strategies for reducing hamstring injury risk in elite football players, emphasizing the importance of individualized training, eccentric conditioning, and movement mechanics. Despite advancements, hamstring injuries remain prevalent due to the increasing demands of high-speed running and eccentric contractions in sports. Eccentric training, particularly the Nordic hamstring exercise, has proven effective but remains underutilized due to compliance challenges and limited preseason time. Incorporating exercises like single-leg RDLs, hip extensions, and inertial training can further strengthen hamstrings and reduce injury risk. Proper sprint mechanics and balanced strength between the iliopsoas and hamstrings are critical. Faulty mechanics, such as excessive backward thigh movement, can increase strain on the hamstrings. A multifactorial approach, combining practical assessments, running kinematics, and targeted exercises, is essential for addressing individual risk factors and improving movement efficiency. Injury prevention also requires tailoring rehabilitation to each athlete's needs, using tools like handheld dynamometers and pulley systems to assess hamstring strength and endurance. Movement constraints, joint torque, and muscle-tendon junction adaptations should be considered in rehabilitation plans. Training programs must balance high-speed running exposure, eccentric conditioning, and varied running techniques to enhance stiffness and reduce fatigue-related risks. The podcast concludes that effective hamstring injury prevention relies on individualized strategies, incorporating both scientific evidence and practical tools, to address the unique demands and risks faced by elite athletes. These approaches ensure improved performance and reduced recurrence rates. Main talking points: Integrate eccentric conditioning Tailor injury prevention to individual athlete needs Focus on proper sprint mechanics to reduce strain Strengthen iliopsoas and hamstring balance for stability Use single-leg RDLs and hip extensions for strength Assess running mechanics to identify risk factors Incorporate varied running techniques to enhance movement Monitor high-speed running exposure in training programs Improve stiffness and control during fatigued states Use tools like dynamometers to assess hamstring strength Develop structured rehab plans with clear progression Address movement efficiency and biomechanics in prevention.

This week Toby and Vidar both share their thoughts on going to see the return of Matthew Bourne's Edward Scissorhands which carved a place in the hearts of audiences worldwide since its premiere back in 2005.  Toby was at Sadler's Wells on Saturday 13 January for the described performance while Vidar attended the recent described performance at the Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre on Saturday 10 February at 2.30pm with description for the whole tour by Professional Audio Describer Caroline Burn. About Matthew Bourne's Edward Scissorhands Based on the classic Tim Burton movie and featuring the hauntingly beautiful music of Danny Elfman and Terry Davies, Bourne and his New Adventures Company return to this witty, bittersweet story of an incomplete boy left alone in a strange new world. In a castle high on a hill lives Edward; a boy created by an eccentric inventor. When his creator dies he is left alone and unfinished with only scissors for hands until a kindly townswoman invites him to live with her suburban family. Can Edward find his place in the well-meaning community which struggles to see past his curious appearance to the innocence and gentleness within? Mathew Bourne's Edward Scissorhands continues on tour until the end of May and more details about the production along with dates of audio described performances can be found on the following pages of the New Adventures website - https://new-adventures.net/edward-scissorhands#overview (Image shows RNIB logo. Drew McOnie is a British choreographer and theatre director, and one of the busiest people in show business. He danced with Matthew Bourne's New Adventures company, but soon wanted to run the show. His work hits a sweet spot between warm and witty, always with a kinetic fizz: whether in the West End, on Broadway or in ballet. His new version of the Nutcracker gives the festive favourite a sweetly queer twist, and next year sees his stage version of the Oscar winning movie The Artist. Drew became a father just a week before this recording – no wonder that we speak about making families in and out of dance.Drew McOnie is Artistic Director of the McOnie Company and an Associate Artist at the Old Vic and Birmingham Rep theatres. He won an Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreography for In the Heights and was nominated for the same award the following year for Jesus Christ Superstar. His credits as director/choreographer include: On the Town (Olivier Award Nomination for Best Musical Revival), The Wild Party and Strictly Ballroom in the UK and King Kong on Broadway. Ballets include Merlin (Northern Ballet). The McOnie Company's latest works are Nutcracker (Tuff Nutt Jazz Club), which runs until 6 January 2024, and The Artist, which opens in May 2024.Find out more about the work of the RADFollow the RAD on social media and join the conversation with host David Jays:Instagram @royalacademyofdanceFacebook @RoyalAcademyofDanceTwitter @RADheadquartersYouTube / royalacademydanceDavid Jays @mrdavidjaysSign up to our mailing list to keep in touch!RAD is an independent educational charity and does not receive regular government funding. One of the world's most successful living choreographers, Sir Matthew Bourne shook up classical ballet in the mid 1990s with his ground-breaking company Adventures In Motion Pictures. His breakthrough production, a radical new version The Nutcracker, was followed by an all-male Swan Lake that, after initial controversy in the press, became a massive critical and commercial hit. Since then he's continued to popularise classical dance with a succession of innovative productions, often drawing inspiration from movies or literature. He's had hits with the Red Shoes, Edward Scissorhands, Dorian Gray and Lord Of the Flies, and has won Olivier and Tony Awards. Matthew Bourne was knighted in 2016 for services to dance. In This Cultural Life he talks about how his love of classic films musicals started with seeing The Sound of Music as a young boy, and falling in love with Julie Andrews. He recalls his teenage years as one of London's top autograph hunters meeting the likes of Gene Kelly, Charlie Chaplin and his hero Fred Astaire. He also explains how he was a relative latecomer to ballet and only saw his first ballet - a Sadler's Wells production of Swan Lake - at the age of 18. Matthew Bourne also chooses Powell and Pressburger's 1948 film The Red Shoes as one of his formative influences. Producer: Edwina Pitman
