When a client is stuck in the loop of repeating a pattern despite full awareness of it, the instinct is to wonder… Are they even motivated to create change? Are they not ready? Are they not committed enough? But that's not what's happening. Insight and behavioral change are not the same cognitive process. They don't even happen in the same part of the brain. Self-awareness lives in the prefrontal cortex. Habitual patterns, automatic reactions, emotional responses that have been running for years, those live in the limbic system. The limbic system is faster, older, and significantly more powerful. When a trigger hits, it activates before the prefrontal cortex can even register what's happening. The pattern runs before conscious awareness has a chance to intervene. So when your client keeps repeating the same thing despite all of their understanding, it's not that they're failing to apply the insight. The insight is arriving too late. The train has already left the station. In this episode, I walk you through: Why insight and behavioral change are neurologically distinct processes What the research actually says about self-awareness (the gap between who thinks they're self-aware and who actually is) Why psychoeducation isn't a warm-up exercise, it's the mechanism that makes everything else land What changes in your practice when your clients understand their own mechanism, not just their patterns Why consistent results (not occasional breakthroughs) are what build a reputation and a practice This is also the first episode in a new five-part series. The next five episodes are speaking directly to everyone in the work of guiding change. Coaches, practitioners, therapists, anyone whose work involves helping another person move from understanding to actually shifting. This series is for you. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dr. Shyamala Kiru is a former psychotherapist of 20 years and the founder of Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic and the Cognitive Freedom Method™. Potomac is growing in more ways than one. More staff, more services, and now more offices. In this episode of the Conquer Risk Podcast, Potomac CMO Christopher Norton sits down with COO Will Gray to talk through the office expansion already underway in Bethesda. After moving into the current space less than a year ago, Potomac has already outgrown it, or what Will calls “a good problem to have”. The new space will add roughly 6,104 square feet, with a second kitchen, three dedicated meeting rooms, and additional huddle and collaboration spaces. The conversation moves from the practical side of construction to the more creative parts of the build-out, including design choices, preserving the personality of the current office, the “jewel box” concept, and the dream of a coffee bar. Construction is expected to run through the summer, with an anticipated completion date of October 1. Most people do the work. They read the books, go to therapy, learn the frameworks, and walk away with real insight into why they are the way they are. And then life happens, and they're right back where they started. In this final episode of the 12-part Cognitive Freedom Method™ series, I'm walking you through the one thing that separates people who change and people who don't: integration. Not more insight. Not another framework. The daily, practiced, embodied work of making new patterns your new normal. Because insight alone has never been enough. And if you've been in the cycle of understanding your patterns but not actually shifting them, this is why. Inside this conversation, I walk you through: Why insight is the starting point for change, not the destination The three stages of integration and how they build on each other What neural pathways actually have to do with your daily reactions Why maintenance planning is one of the most overlooked parts of real transformation How to recognize early signs that you're slipping back into old patterns (and what to do about it) Why cognitive freedom is an ongoing relationship with your mind, not a finish line you cross _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dr. Shyamala Kiru is a former psychotherapist of 20 years and the founder of Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic and the Cognitive Freedom Method™. Many advisors still have limited visibility into some of their clients' largest retirement assets, especially those held inside workplace plans like 401(k)s, 403(b)s, and 457s. In this episode, Potomac's CMO Christopher Norton and CEO & Co-CIO Manish Khatta discuss how Self-Directed Brokerage Accounts (SDBAs) can help advisors bring professional portfolio management into eligible employer-sponsored retirement plans without requiring a rollover or job change. They cover what SDBAs are, why they have often been overlooked, how they work in practice, and what advisors should consider when using them to deliver more coordinated, comprehensive retirement guidance. Beneath every thought you have, every emotional reaction you experience, every decision you make, there's something quieter running the show. It doesn't announce itself. It doesn't show up in the moments you'd expect. But it shapes everything. How you see yourself. What you believe is possible. Who you think you're allowed to become. These are your core beliefs. And in this episode, the second to last in the Inside the Cognitive Freedom Method™ series, I'm teaching the concept I consider the most essential piece of long-term transformation work. If patterns keep returning after everything else has been tried, core beliefs are almost always why. Inside this conversation, I cover: What core beliefs are and why they sit beneath every thought, emotion, and decision you have The three most common limiting core beliefs and how to recognize them in yourself (or in the people you work with) How and when core beliefs develop, and why they're so resistant to surface-level change What core beliefs actually drive: your thoughts, your emotional reactions, and your decision-making A three-step process for core belief restructuring: identify, challenge, and develop new adaptive beliefs Why this work requires repetition and conscious practice, and what that actually looks like ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dr. Shyamala Kiru is a former psychotherapist of 20 years and the founder of Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic and the Cognitive Freedom Method™. Most of us have been taught, somewhere along the way, that being hard on ourselves is what drives us forward. That the inner critic is there to keep us sharp. That without it, we'd get lazy, we'd slip, we'd stop pushing. After two decades of working with people, I can tell you with certainty: that belief is one of the most costly ones we carry. In this episode, part 10 of the Inside the Cognitive Freedom Method™ series, I'm breaking down the real cost of harsh self-judgment and why self-compassion isn't a soft concept. It's actually the psychological foundation that makes lasting change possible. Because here's what I've seen over and over again: the inner critic doesn't motivate change. It reinforces the patterns keeping you stuck. Inside this conversation, I walk you through: What the inner critic actually is, where it comes from, and why it developed in the first place The three things harsh self-judgment consistently activates (and why none of them move you forward) The self-judgment cycle, mapped out so you can see exactly how it operates in real time Why self-compassion is the condition your mind actually needs in order to learn and grow A skill called compassionate reframing and how to practice it Why real confidence, presence, and magnetism are built on self-compassion, not self-criticism __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dr. Shyamala Kiru is a former psychotherapist of 20 years and the founder of Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic and the Cognitive Freedom Method™. There's a moment that most of us miss. It happens in a split second, right before the outburst or the shutdown, before the spiral or the silence, before you say the thing you wish you hadn't or withdraw in the way you always do. It's the space between what triggers you and how you respond. And learning to find that space, and to use it intentionally, is one of the most powerful things you can do for yourself. In this episode, part nine of the Cognitive Freedom Method™ series, I'm teaching one of the most important skills inside this work: how to train your mind to pause between trigger and response, and how to use that pause to make intentional choices rather than automatic ones. Because here's what I know after decades of working with people: the untrained mind doesn't pause. It reacts immediately and automatically, from old patterns and old wounds, and it will keep doing that until you train it to do something different. That training is possible, and this episode walks you through exactly how. Inside this conversation, I walk you through: Why most reactions happen automatically and what's actually driving them The trigger response cycle and how it unfolds in a split second Why the pause between trigger and response is an active skill, not a passive one A three-step process to notice, name, and consciously choose your response How Dr. Shyamala personally works this process in her own relationships Why creating space between trigger and response is what puts you back in the driver's seat of your life _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dr. Shyamala Kiru is a former psychotherapist of 20 years and the founder of Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic and the Cognitive Freedom Method™. There's a belief most of us carry without realizing it. That if you feel something, you're supposed to react to it. That anger means you get to be outwardly angry. That anxiety means you spiral. That sadness means you shut down. That this is just "who you are". But here's what I want you to know: feeling and reacting are not the same thing. They're not even the same process. And understanding that distinction might be one of the most important shifts you ever make. In this episode, I'm teaching one of the core skills of the Cognitive Freedom Method™, emotion regulation, and I want to clear up what it actually is. Because most people think regulation means suppression. It doesn't. It means learning to stay steady while emotions move through you. That's a very different thing. Inside this conversation, I walk you through: Why feeling an emotion and reacting to an emotion are two completely separate processes What "emotional flooding" is and how to recognize when it's happening to you The three-step sequence most people collapse into one - and why that's where we get into trouble Nervous system tools that actually work when you're activated (including the one I personally reach for first) Why you don't want to wait until your distress hits a 10 out of 10 to intervene What regulation actually looks like in a real conflict - and why shutting down isn't the same as being calm ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dr. Shyamala Kiru is a former psychotherapist of 20 years and the founder of Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic and the Cognitive Freedom Method™. Have you ever had a really intense reaction to something... And then, once the emotion came down, looked back at the situation and thought: why did that feel so overwhelming? Why did I react the way I did? Because the situation itself didn't actually match the reaction you had. Here's what I want you to understand: most of us experience emotional distress not because of what's happening around us. We experience it because our thinking becomes extreme, rigid and fixed. And when that happens, our perception actually narrows. Think of it like this. Imagine walking down the street and being able to see everything in front of you, the full, wide picture. You can see what's coming and you can respond to what's actually there. Now imagine that view narrowing to almost nothing. That's what happens to an untrained mind under stress. The ability you have to see the nuances of the situation disappear. The range of seeing all sides disappears. And you're left with the most extreme version of whatever you're looking at. All good or all bad. Success or failure. Always or never. This is what we call all-or-nothing thinking, and it's one of the most common patterns we work with inside the Cognitive Freedom Method™. In this episode, I walk you through: Why emotional distress rarely comes from external events, and where it actually originates The most common all-or-nothing patterns (and the specific words that signal you're in one) Why extreme thinking intensifies your emotional reactions and makes situations feel more threatening than they are What the "cognitive narrowing effect" is and how to recognize it in yourself What cognitive flexibility actually means and why it's a skill you can train __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dr. Shyamala Kiru is a former psychotherapist of 20 years and the founder of Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic and the Cognitive Freedom Method™. In This Episode In this episode of Redefining Tomorrow, Dr. Olivia Ly Lesslar joins David Goldsmith for a deep exploration into the intelligence of the human body, the limits of conventional diagnosis, and the idea that the body is not broken but often trying to communicate. As an Australian medical doctor working across psychoneuroimmunology, longevity, functional medicine, and complex-condition medicine, Olivia brings a systems-level view of health. She explains why symptoms are not always failures in the body, but signals shaped by environment, history, nervous system state, lifestyle, stress resilience, and evolutionary biology. Together, David and Olivia explore what happens when medicine becomes too specialized, when patients lose agency, and when diagnosis becomes a label rather than a path to understanding. The conversation moves through the nervous system, placebo and nocebo, chronic illness, environmental toxicity, fertility, stress resilience, and the deeper question of how we learn to listen to the body before assuming it needs to be fixed. Episode Outlines Why listening may matter more than diagnosis The loss of patient agency in modern medicine Psychoneuroimmunology and the mind-body feedback loop Placebo, nocebo, belief, and biological chemistry Stress, eustress, resilience, and the language we use around health Why history-taking is becoming a lost medical skill How genetics, lifestyle, environment, and behavior interact Lactose intolerance, chronic disease, and the misunderstanding of “faults” The nervous system's role in healing and performance Fight, flight, rest, digest, and the biology of recovery Environmental toxicity, microplastics, food systems, and modern disease Sex, safety signals, intimacy, and nervous system regulation Evolutionary biology and why ancient survival responses can become maladaptive today Why sustainable health may require curiosity, autonomy, and trust in the body Biography of the Guest Dr. Olivia Lesslar is an Australian medical doctor internationally recognized for her work in psychoneuroimmunology, longevity, and complex-condition medicine. With formal training in medicine and international relations, she brings an interdisciplinary perspective that bridges neuroscience, immunology, behavioral science, functional medicine, and systems-level thinking. Often described as a “medical Sherlock Holmes,” Dr. Lesslar is known for her ability to investigate complex, multi-system health conditions that do not fit neatly into conventional diagnostic categories. Her work combines scientific rigor, pattern recognition, clinical intuition, and a patient-centered approach to understanding the deeper roots of chronic and multifactorial illness. She is Director of Functional and Longevity Medicine at Cingulum Health in Sydney and holds academic appointments at Griffith University's National Centre for Neuroimmunology and Emerging Diseases and the Geneva College of Longevity Science. Her advisory work spans biotechnology, neurotechnology, longevity medicine, and integrative health organizations across multiple countries. This is an episode of the Redefining Tomorrow podcast.

Zoltan brings his perspective as a futurist, author, and political candidate to explore how advancements in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and human enhancement are challenging long-held assumptions about life, death, and identity. The discussion moves beyond surface-level futurism into the deeper philosophical and societal implications of extending human capability and lifespan. Together, they examine the tension between technological progress and ethical responsibility, and what it means to consciously design the future of civilization rather than react to it. Episode Outlines What transhumanism actually means beyond the headlines Technology as a force for redefining human limits The future of life extension and human enhancement Ethics, identity, and the boundaries of being human From journalism to futurism: Zoltan's path The role of politics in shaping technological futures Fear vs. possibility in emerging science Artificial intelligence and human evolution Designing the future vs. inheriting it Civilization at an inflection point Biography of the Guest Zoltan Istvan is a futurist, author, entrepreneur, and political figure known for advancing the global conversation around transhumanism and the role of science and technology in shaping humanity's future. Zoltan has advised organizations ranging from the U.S. Navy to international governments, and continues to write for major publications such as The New York Times, Newsweek, Vice, and Wired. He is currently running for California Governor in 2026 and remains a leading voice in the movement to rethink human capability, longevity, and the future of civilization. Has an emotion ever hit you so hard that you were convinced it would never pass? The panic. The anger. The overwhelm. And in the middle of it, some part of your brain whispers: this is just how it is now. This episode is about that moment. And why that belief is one of the most important misconceptions we can unlearn. In this episode, the sixth in my 12-part series on the Cognitive Freedom Method™, I'm walking you through one of my favorite concepts inside the methodology: the emotional wave. Because here's what most of us were never taught: Emotions don't last forever. They move in a predictable, wave-like pattern. And once you understand that pattern, everything changes. Inside this conversation, I walk you through: Why most people believe difficult emotions are permanent (and why that belief creates so much suffering) The three-part wave structure: rise, peak, and fall Why we tend to react at exactly the wrong moment The common behaviors that show up when we try to escape emotional discomfort What "reappraising permanence" means and how to start practicing it Why the goal is never to eliminate emotions, it's to build your capacity to stay steady while they move through you _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dr. Shyamala Kiru is a former psychotherapist of 20 years and the founder of Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic and the Cognitive Freedom Method™. In this episode of Conquer Risk, we bring you a special guest appearance by Potomac CEO Manish Khatta on the Billion Dollar Backstory podcast, hosted by Stacey Havener. You may be familiar with Stacy's work or even heard her on this very Podcast. This is a fascinating listen, recorded not long after Potomac first crossed the $1B AUM mark. It is at the same time a fantastic time capsule of Manish in that moment, and a study in consistency, as so much of it rings as true today (at nearly $4B) as it did then. There's a story running in the background of your mind right now. You might not even know it's there. It's not the version of yourself you introduce at a dinner party or describe to a new colleague. It's the quieter one. The one that shows up when something goes wrong, when pressure hits, when conflict arrives. I'm not good at this. I always end up being the responsible one. When stress hits, I fall apart. In this episode, I take you behind the scenes of your cognitive structure to look at something most people never examine: the identity narratives we carry about ourselves and how those narratives shape everything. Not just how you feel. How you relate. How you respond under pressure. How you navigate your closest relationships. How you move through your entire life. And I'll share something personal: the self story that came out of the hardest season of my life, and how it became one of the greatest gifts I've ever given myself. Inside this conversation, I walk you through: What identity narratives are and why they're different from individual thoughts Where self stories actually originate (family of origin, repeated feedback, and emotionally significant moments) How your mind filters reality to keep confirming the story it already believes Why reframing doesn't mean inventing a new identity — and what it actually means The cognitive skill we use inside the Cognitive Freedom Method™ to begin shifting these patterns __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dr. Shyamala Kiru is a former psychotherapist of 20 years and the founder of Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic and the Cognitive Freedom Method™. Have you ever done something in a moment of pressure and thought — why did I just do that? Checked your phone compulsively. Avoided a conversation you knew you needed to have. Reacted in a way that didn't reflect who you want to be. Most of the time, those behaviors aren't random. They're driven by two very powerful internal forces: craving and avoidance. Craving pulls us toward what feels comfortable or pleasurable. Avoidance pushes us away from what feels uncomfortable or uncertain. And together, they quietly run a huge portion of our daily decisions without us even noticing. In this episode, we go deeper into how the mind actually works, specifically the role that urges play in keeping us stuck in patterns we're trying to change. Inside this conversation, I walk you through: What craving and avoidance are and how they drive most of our behaviors Why urges feel urgent and permanent, even when they're neither The urge wave concept taught inside the Cognitive Freedom Method™ and how it works Why most people act at the worst possible moment of an emotional wave What urge surfing is and how to use it as a practical skill Why the goal is never suppression, but building the capacity to choose How learning to sit with an urge builds the internal architecture of real confidence and self trust When you stop reacting automatically to every urge, something shifts. You create space. You build trust in yourself. And you begin to experience what cognitive freedom actually feels like in practice. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dr. Shyamala Kiru is a former psychotherapist of 20 years and the founder of Kiru Psychotherapy Clinic and the Cognitive Freedom Method™. Join Pastor Nick and Pastor Stephen as they introduce our upcoming sermon series, The Savior Has Come, in this new episode! Together, they share a sneak peek at our Advent series, which includes the four Sundays prior to Christmas and culminates in our Christmas Eve candlelight celebration. In a season often marked by busyness and materialism, Advent invites us to slow down, to wait, and to refocus our hearts on the message and meaning of Christ's coming. It helps us think biblically and communally about the significance of Jesus' arrival and places Christmas in its proper context within the story of Scripture—where the entire Old Testament points ahead in longing for the promised Messiah. As we reflect on this waiting, we're reminded of how we, too, are called to wait with hope for Christ's return. As we prepare our hearts for Advent, we anticipate a season filled with intention, celebration, and worship. We're eager to dive into the first two chapters of Luke together on Sundays and to focus our hearts with our church-wide devotional, where the daily readings prepare us for each week's preaching text and provide thoughtful reflection and discussion for families and individuals. This Advent, we look forward to celebrating our great Savior with joy, anticipation, and hope—adoring Christ together. Feeling Like Success Has to Equal Exhaustion? Discover How to Scale Your Business Without Sacrificing What Matters Most If you've ever felt like quitting your business, you're not alone! In this episode, I sit down with author and host of the What Works podcast, Tara McMullin, to explore how to create a business that truly supports the life you want. Tara has been challenging conventional business wisdom for over 16 years and brings a refreshing approach to success, productivity, and growth. She explains why focusing solely on revenue goals can lead to burnout, how to honor your actual capacity, and the importance of defining success on your own terms. We dive into why saying "no" might be your most powerful business strategy, how to escape the validation spiral that keeps you overcommitted, and the transformative difference between being "busy" and being "squeezed." HERE ARE THE 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE: 1️⃣ Your Business Should Support Your Life – Start with your personal variables and non-negotiables first. Your business is a needs-meeting machine, and your needs as the business owner must come first. 2️⃣ Honor Your Capacity – We all have different capacities based on our available resources—time, money, emotional bandwidth, support networks, and skills. Before taking on new projects, ask: "Do I have what I need to do this well?" 3️⃣ Escape the Validation Spiral – Be cautious about constantly adding new commitments to feel valuable. This leads to depleted resources, underdelivering, and a spiral of taking on even more to compensate. Dr. Angela Lauria and Matt Lowry, LPP, discuss tennis legend John McEnroe and his many Autistic traits.McEnroe had an impressive tennis career, utilizing Autistic pattern recognition to anticipate where the ball would go. He visualized the court like a chess board and said he turned the game into a math equation. The hosts further relate this to expectation sensitivity and Autistic scripting. He was misunderstood for his on-court meltdowns reacting to unfair calls by referees. The media unjustly portrayed him as a "brat" and one of the most disliked people in the world—harsh!“Because all autistic people, we have that expectation sensitivity, because we live in a world full of chaos and we need things to be predictable. Hence the patterns.” —MattIn reality, the Autistic athlete is extremely empathetic and generous, donating huge sums to charity. He's loyal to friends and passionate about causes like youth tennis programs. His wife, Patty, believes he is on the autism spectrum based on his routines, math skills, sensory issues, and focus on special interests like art and guitar. McEnroe agrees it's likely.“Patty is there for it, 28 years, great kids, great marriage and she says the thing that keeps their marriage strong is that she can always count on the fact that no one has a better moral compass than John.” —AngelaThe hosts argue McEnroe's meltdowns were a natural reaction to an allistic world that insists on conformity and compliance over truth and justice. Perhaps, if the media had used a neurodiversity-affirming lens, he could have avoided being labeled so negatively. Now in his later years, the Autistic celebrity leads a happy life with a partner who understands him. He channels special interests positively into tennis programs, art deals, and (his latest Autistic activity) voiceover work.Did you catch all of McEnroe's Autistic SPINs?
