TW: Sexual assault, suspicions of murder, missing persons, short mention of abuse of an animal Bonjour, Weirdos and welcome to another episode of KEEP IT WEIRD the podcast for all things strange & unusual, conspiratorial & psychological, unsolved & unhinged and EVERYTHING in between. This week we've got some OLD BUSINESS to attend to right off the bat because Ashley has an update from last episode on THE GATEWAY PROJECT!! Turns out... uh... page 25 has not been missing for a few years now. So we go over what that page entails and how it may just change the way you view the world forever. Then Lauren takes us into a PARANORMAL PARADISE as we discover you don't need an old dilapidated mansion to live with ghosts-- sometimes apartments can be JUST as scary! The haunting of Brooklyn's 455A Sackett Street is a strange and terrifying tale of what happens when a place is used for bad deeds for too long.... Ashley brings us home with an UNSOLVED MYSTERY and potentially even an unsolved murder, as we learn about a man named Louis Le Prince who disappeared without a trace only DAYS before he was to unveil the world's very first working moving picture machine. The patent for the machine just so happened to disappear alongside him and a mere 8 months later a very famous inventor announced that HE had invented the world's very first moving picture machine... and boy did it look an awful lot like Le Prince's design...... Today's episode is dedicated to a lover of our show, a listener we lost on September 21st, 2023. Susan Lee Bartlem, Lee to all who knew her well, passed away exactly a year to the DAY that we recorded this episode. (which was an accident... but there are no accidents.) Lee was a beloved teacher at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School in Queensland Australia for 23 years and she was a REAL WEIRDO. Not only did they play Metallica and read Anne Rice at her funeral, but her family even got Keep It Weird tattoos in her honor. It would have been a thrill to meet Lee in real life, on this astral plane, but she lives on forever in the hearts of her students, her friends and family, and with all of us who call ourselves weirdos with pride. Check out some LINKS below if you want to do some further reading on today's strange tales. On this episode of Flow Over Fear, Adam shares valuable lessons learned from 100 years in business. His company, Hill Brothers Chemical Company, just celebrated its 100th anniversary. For more than 4 generations, they have been building a legacy of care and compassion in the chemical industry. With this celebration, they join companies such as Nintendo and Zildjian, which have been around for more than a century. We learn about the lessons these legacy companies can teach us regarding the importance of meaning beyond self-interest, balance, adapting and aligning our actions with purpose, and creating value that transcends the profit motive. We discuss why relationships and community are crucial for building a legacy, drawing insights from Adam's experience as the CEO of this legacy company, Hill Brothers. We delve into the topic of fear, discussing how mastering balance and adaptation can help us overcome it both internally (individually) and externally (as a business). Ultimately, we learn how companies exceeding the 100-year mark have lasting power and how their legacy transcends self-interest. Time stamps: [00:00:56] Adam discusses challenges of running a fourth generation business and shares three lessons learned at a centennial party. [00:04:47] Learning to build a healthy relationship with fear can result in sustainability and a fulfilling life, both personally and within organizations. Core values, discipline, and alignment with purpose are key. Lessons from 100-year-old businesses can be applied to building a better relationship with fear. Hill Brothers legacy is just the beginning, with a sense of pride and joy in achieving success. [00:08:04] Legacy businesses sustain through creating value beyond profit and mastering the balance of focus and adaptation, exemplified by Nintendo and Zildjian. [00:12:59] The meaning behind a company transcends its legacy and self-interest, as exemplified by companies with a hundred year legacy. This concept is significant as a company stays longer in business. For Hill Brothers, their power is not in chemicals or profit but in their existence and purpose. PlayStation lacks this characteristic. [00:15:40] Legacy companies have lasting power and built identity, while newer companies are still trying to shape theirs. Relationships are crucial. [00:20:17] Adaptability, core values, patience, and relationships are the keys to sustainability and fulfillment.

His vision for the business in no way aligned with its operation at the time and built a 32000 bird ‘Bentley of bird sheds' shed to start an egg business. We speak about the challenges of the egg sector, the corporate manipulation of public opinion to avoid blame family difficulty and his wee tattoo that's shows he's petrified of grass snakes…you coulda chosen a Boa, Ioan but you do you!

This is Matt Reustle and today we are breaking down the 150 year-old investment bank – Goldman Sachs. From the outside, investment banks like Goldman are black boxes of profits and the embodiment of “Wall Street”. But as with most things, the reality sits somewhere between the polarizing designations. Goldman is neither a vampire squid nor are they doing God's work. To break down Goldman, I am joined by longtime financials analyst Marc Rubinstein. For loyal listeners, you will remember Marc from our popular episode on Blackstone. For those who haven't listened, I think you'll enjoy that one in tandem with this. Having personally worked at Goldman for a decade it was great to go through the inner workings of a bank with Marc. We cover what it means to sit at the center of the capital system – and the various ways a bank facilitates risk management and risk transfer. We cover the DNA of bank profitability as we go through the core segments of a bank: asset management, sales & trading, and investment banking. And we talk about culture – the mystery and the prestige that has followed Goldman since its days as a private partnership. I learned a ton through this conversation, and I think you will too. Please enjoy this breakdown of Goldman Sachs.
