Key Points From This Episode: A quick update: How to check out the new No-BS OKR Self-Assessment tool. Insight into Jason's role as the OKR Practice Lead at Genetec. Why he's a self-described servant leader and why that's often the case for OKR practitioners. How he first started working with OKRs and got his company to create a position for him. I don't get my success from me succeeding.” — Jason Johnston [07:35] “If we want to create real change in anything we're doing, especially in the companies we're in, somebody has to drive it.” — Jason Johnston [14:03] “The No-BS OKRs class really kind of changed the way I look at OKRs and [made] it more intuitive.” — Jason Johnston [22:28] “We have to put as much emphasis on the things that we accomplish as well as the things we don't accomplish. Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - Cortes Island will not have a sani-dump this summer. The matter was brought to Cortes Currents attention by former Cortes Museum President Lynne Jordan, who has been living in Duncan for the past four years. “The closest RV sani-dump is at the Shell station on the upper highway above Campbell River, two ferries away! There is no public one on Quadra Island either. I had planned to visit Cortes this summer for about three weeks to continue doing some more research for the history of Whaletown I am in the process of writing. With my camper van which has small holding tanks, I will only be staying three or four days at the most,” she wrote. Jordan had been expecting to use the sani-dump at Klahoose Gorge Harbour campground, until she found out it is closed while the resort undergoes extensive rennovations. Jason Johnston, General Manager of QXMC (the Klahoose economic development arm), emailed: “The RV Sani station at the Gorge Harbour Resort Marina was not in service at the time the Klahoose purchased Gorge Harbour (in 2021). It was only recently that I discovered the above ground tank for this purpose and learned that the service was offered.”  “That said, when our RV park was open during the 2022 season, we had a pump truck service come up and service RVs staying with us. This is a great solution for all RV operators and those opting for extended stays. It worked well for 2022 operations and we simply added it to the service that was already being done on site. I believe it was also $20 user rate, which was very affordable to campers needing service, allowing us to could cover extra costs.”  During the years she lived on Cortes, Jordan was responsible for having the sani-dump being installed at the Gorge. Prior to that she had approached Smelt Bay Provincial Park, Cortes Natural Food Co-op and the Squirrel Cove General Store. They briefly considered a sani-dump at the museum, “The problem is the holding tank is between the Museum and Firehall No. 1. Some RVs are rather large, and would create a problem for fire trucks and ambulance if their exit was blocked or compromised during an emergency.” Jordan described a number of incidents prior to Gorge Harbour installing a sani-dump, when RVs either dumped, or were stopped from dumping, their grey and black matter in some of Cortes Island's more ecologically sensitive areas.  “Twice, just in time, I stopped RVs from dumping both their grey and black water tanks into Hague Lake Creek from the lake's lower parking lot. It made me wonder how many RVs had done – and would continue doing! -- the same thing when I wasn't happening by? … It made me livid since that creek drains into the ecologically fragile Manson's Lagoon, a most amazing and special lagoon along the BC coast.” The campground manager at Smelt Bay Provincial Park had informed her he had “to clean up large smelly spills in the campground where visitors had dumped their sani-tanks in the lower overflow parking lot, or at the top of the beach along the road.” That was prior to the sani-dump at Gorge Harbour, which Johnson wrote was no longer operational in 2021. He added, “While planning is ongoing both for the Gorge and our new site at Squirrel Cove, we are aware of the need for RV sani service on Cortes as well as marine pump out, also very much needed for Cortes. There are lots of factors to consider such as the chemicals in RV and marine tanks and thier effects on septic systems. Likely the best solution is to again to address holding tanks and having pump trucks service them but again we are still in planning.”  “For the interim, I suggest RV operators consider looping in trailer pump out service as part of thier amenities as there is always pump trucks coming to the Island.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Terry Persun's books have taken readers to the uncharted worlds near the edge of the galaxy, to lands where shape shifters battle humans, to the near future in both technology and shamanism, all while keeping the pace matching a thriller or suspense novel. Despite his adventures into other worlds, altered states, and other people's lives, he says he's fairly average--but that's not a consensus among his peers, not by any means. Persun lives in Washington state with his wife, seven horses, dozen or so chickens and several cats. There's no telling what animals will come to live with them next. When he's not writing or with the animals, you probably won't see him--except on social sites or at his website: www.TerryPersun.com ABOUT THE BOOK - STEALING CHILDHOOD Human trafficking kingpins, a shamanic sect, and a reluctant FBI team merge to stop Dan and Jason Johnston from doing their best shamanic work. The Team is called to work with the FBI on a human trafficking assignment, targeted at Native American teens. Agent Rafsky, who doesn't know why Dan and his son were called in on the case, is skeptical of their skills. She has her own way of handling things and would rather go solo to do the job. The whole operation is delicate and could result in failure as well as the deaths of some of the girls. Complications escalate once Dan realizes that other Shamans are involved. As the novel pitches Dan and Jason against dangers found while in altered states of consciousness, they also have to deal with skepticism and physical roadblocks from the FBI. Everything comes to a head when the FBI uses Jason to infiltrate the trafficking operation and gets found out. That's when Dan gets physically involved himself, putting him, Jason, and his friend in danger.

The Federalist Society's COVID-19 & the Law Conference began with a panel discussion on "Government vs. Private Decisionmaking". The panel took place via teleconference on Thursday, June 11, 2020.How should societies respond to pandemic crises, and to what extent has the American response tracked ideal models? The key questions are the extent to which public and private actors take responsibility for actions and how those actors coordinate with each other. What considerations should govern the allocation of public/private decision making in confronting COVID-19? The Federalist Society's COVID-19 & the Law Conference began with a panel discussion on "Government vs. Private Decisionmaking". The panel took place via teleconference on Thursday, June 11, 2020.How should societies respond to pandemic crises, and to what extent has the American response tracked ideal models? The key questions are the extent to which public and private actors take responsibility for actions and how those actors coordinate with each other. What considerations should govern the allocation of public/private decision making in confronting COVID-19? What are the risks and benefits of decisions being made by the government (at all of the different levels of government), businesses, and individuals? What, in the response thus far,has worked and what hasn’t? Free markets have exponentially improved the well-being of humanity and lifted more people out of poverty than any government program. But severe inequalities persist, and gaps have widened in the past thirty years. Is this a problem in and of itself? Or only to the extent it is caused by unfairly distorting the market with the help of government – so-called “crony capitalism" – as opposed to the inherently unique capabilities of each individual? How should the law be structured to ensure a level playing field? In this panel, Yaron Brook joins Prof. Thomas Edsall, Adjunct Professor of Journalism, Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, Prof. Jason Johnston, Henry L. and Grace Doherty Charitable Foundation Professor of Law, University of Virginia School of Law, and Prof. Steven Teles, Associate Professor of Political Science, Johns Hopkins University. WHAT TERRY PERSUN SAYS ABOUT HIMSELF Unless you haven't already guessed, I love writing. I am traditionally and self-published with novels, novellas, short stories, poetry, nonfiction books on writing and spiritual subjects. I'm a writer. I read in multiple genres. In the past six months or so, I've read how-to books, fiction across genres, poetry collections, books on spirituality, books on business and marketing, and books on specific subjects like curiosity, shape-shifting, and shamanism. Then there are the magazines I read, like Discover, ID, Scientific American, Poets & Writers, The Writers' Chronical, and many others. ABOUT THE BOOK - BIOMASS REWIND BIOMASS REWIND follows a group of “made” humans manufactured and trained by a sapient ship to colonize a new Earth-like planet. Once on the surface, the squad must evade gruesome death at the claws, leaves and wings of the hostile native wildlife--if they don't end up killing each other first. But when they find evidence that they aren't the first humans to walk the planet, their mission becomes suspect. If this is not their first visit to “Beauty”, then what is their ship's motive, and how could they survive what other versions of themselves could not? ABOUT THE BOOK - STEALING CHILDHOOD A reluctant FBI team merge to stop Dan and Jason Johnston from doing their best shamanic work against evil forces. Dan and Jason are called to work on a human trafficking assignment, targeted at them. Agent Rafsky is skeptical, has her own way of handling things and would rather be left alone. Dan and Jason are pitted against dangers found in altered states. Everything explodes when the FBI uses Jason to infiltrate. Then Dan gets physically involved and finds himself in danger.

Class Action in Consumer Finance Agreements

The Federal Arbitration Act (FAA), passed in 1925, generally requires courts to look favorably upon all arbitration agreements. In 2011, the Supreme Court upheld an arbitration agreement in a contract for mobile phone services that contained a class action ban. The court ruled that a state law that prevented the class action ban from being enforced was “an obstacle to the accomplishment of the FAA’s objectives.” -- However, Congress passed the Dodd-Frank Act in 2010, which authorizes the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to study arbitration agreements in consumer contracts and limit or prohibit them if doing so would be in the public interest and for the protection of consumers. In May 2016, the CFPB issued a proposed rule that would ban arbitration agreements that acted to prevent class action lawsuits and would further establish certain reporting requirements for other arbitrations that are filed between consumers and providers. -- Our experts discussed this proposed rule, including the history that led us to this point and the potential impact it will have if it is finalized. -- Featuring: Prof. Jason Johnston, Henry L. and Grace Doherty Charitable Foundation Professor of Law, University of Virginia School of Law and Thaddeus King, Officer, Consumer Banking,The Pew Charitable Trusts
