Each chapter is a new “gift” that Jason must learn - and, as a young man, you need to learn as well.   The Gift of Laughter “It [the gift of laughter] is the ability to look at yourself, your problems, and life in general, and just laugh. Many people live unhappy lives because they take things too seriously.”   “Comparison is the thief of joy,” is attributed to President Theodore Roosevelt and several others - and it is a great warning that unhealthy comparison to others can rob you of joy with what you have!   Laughter can be infectious, but so can negativity!   God has an incredible sense of humor - where do you think your sense of humor came from??? Assume everything is possible. Make a list of all the things you would like to do and be and have in your life. Then begin to prioritize that list as you discover the ones that generate the most passion in your soul.” I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength…Phil 4:13 We should all practice this concept - God, what do YOU want me to do, how should I be spending the life that God has given me for HIS glory and purpose? The Gift of Giving “Conventional wisdom would say that the less you give, the more you have. The converse is true. The more you give, the more you have. Abundance creates the ability to give; giving creates more abundance.”   Giving can mean so much more than money - we all have time, talents, and treasure. The giving of money is only one aspect of what it means to give of yourself.  Maybe God is asking you to give the one of these that is the most difficult for you!   The Bible says a lot about money, most of it is a warning not to let money become a god or idol in your life. Learning also takes hard work - learning doesn't just happen, you have to make plans to learn!!! The greatest insult is to tell someone that you have nothing to learn from them! Find people you want to learn something from, take them to coffee, and ask them good questions!   The Gift of Problems “If we are not allowed to deal with small problems, we will be destroyed by slightly larger ones.” The Coddling of the American Mind by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt - prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child…good reminder! When we can learn from our own problems, we begin to deal with life. When we can learn from other people's problems, we begin to master life. What life lessons have you learned from watching others? The world needs more Jesus…YOU have an opportunity to bring the Light of the World to address the problems in the world!   The Gift of Family Jason went to the Red Stevens Home for Boys to see the value of family from those who look like they don't have family.   It's Better to Build Boys Than to Mend Men by C. Truett Cathy…the founder of Chick-fil-A was incredibly involved in the lives of young men, especially those without a family.   Family is not as much about being related by blood as it is about relating through love. Hamilton. Each chapter is a new “gift” that Jason must learn - and, as a young man, you need to learn as well.   The Gift of Work He who loves his work never labors.   The story sends Jason out to Alpine, TX to work on a ranch - in the middle of Big Bend country, down on the Texas border - part of Brewster County, largest county in Texas - nearly 4 million acres of land or over 6,000 square miles (little smaller than the country of Israel)   The work that Jason got to do was dig fence post holes to put up a new fence - for miles and miles and miles… Three of the four of us have used a fence post hole digger and agree - that's REAL work!!! Colossians 3:23 - “do you work heartily as unto the Lord, and not for men”…who do you work for, whose approval do you seek for your work? Matthew 7 - the parable of building your house on the rock - may be harder and take more effort, but doing the job well means that the work will last through the storms of life!   The Gift of Money Jason gets $1500 (the wages he “earned” by working on the ranch), and he's supposed to go out and find 5 people who need the money and give it to them - to see the power of money. He ended up giving away $1800 - he put in $300 of his own money to help others in need. You can't buy happiness with money. Money is a tool that can fix certain problems, pay specific bills, but it won't solve the problems of the heart or bring meaning to life.   The Gift of Friends It is a wealthy person, indeed, who calculates riches not in gold but in friends.   “Friend is a word that is thrown around far too easily by people who don't know the meaning of it.”   "Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence? true friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo & withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation." George Washington   “Friendship involves loyalty, commitment, and a process that includes sharing another person's life.”   The necessity of friends - especially for guys - we're not meant to live life in a silo. Statehouse Update on Discharge Petition and 60 Percent Constitutional Amendment Increase OCA President Chris Long and Pastor Al Davis discuss this week at the Ohio Statehouse. All eyes are on Columbus in hopes that the Ohio House will have the 60 votes to put the 60 percent Constitutional Amendment increase on a special August ballot, heading off the radical abortion amendment that could be on the November ballot if the petition circulators secure enough signatures by July 5th. What is at stake are the lives of Ohio's unborn for years to come, If the radical abortion interests have their way, abortion will be legal to the ninth month in Ohio and it would be put in our Ohio Constitution. Scott Wiggam joined his colleagues in signing on to a discharge petition on HJR 1, the constitutional amendment that will increase the requirement for constitutional amendments to pass by 60 percent. Rep. Wiggam was the chair of a special committee that Speaker Stevens concocted back on February 16th after he stalled the measure by not conducting hearings or calling for House sessions in which the measure may have passed before the February 1st deadline to get on the May ballot. Many believe that was the payback that  Rep. Jason Stevens gave to the 32 Democrats in exchange for their votes for his speakership. Speaker Stevens won the speaker's vote with only 22 Republicans and all 32 Democrats. On March 30th he removed Rep. Wiggam from the chairmanship of the Constitutional Resolutions Committee in retaliation for Rep. Governor DeWine delivered his State of the State Address to a joint session of the General Assembly.  Greg Lawson, Senior Fellow at the Buckeye Institute, discusses with OCA President Chris Long the specifics of Governor DeWine's budget proposals. The Governor focused on education and mental health,  proposed economic regional development zones, as well as career center training and expanding the trades programs. He addressed the current educational crisis as students have fallen behind in their pathway to graduation, and specifically that 40% are not proficient in reading at their grade level. He announced an initiative to help every student become proficient in reading at their grade level. He also announced an expansion of school choice. In addition, he proposed, "If you are in the top 5% of your high school graduating class-- wherever you go to high school in Ohio -- we plan to reward you with a $5,000 a year scholarship, also renewable for each of 4 years, if you choose to attend a college or university here in Ohio." Here to discuss the details is Greg Lawson of the Buckeye Institute.  Part 2 Jason Stevens, who was elected Speaker by the Democrats, held the first session since his election shocker earlier this month. Today was to be votes for floor leadership and for House rules. Speaker Jason Stevens would not recognize his fellow Republicans, but rammed through his own leadership with help from the Democrats and would not recognize Rep. Josh Williams of Lucas County who stood to speak to amend. It's a bad look for the Speaker to not recognize the newly-elected African American Republican Representative from Lucas County.  Rep. Derek Merrin stood to remind the Speaker that he is to recognize the members for motions and efforts to amend in accordance with House rules. Shoutings of disapproval erupted in the chamber when Stevens would not so much as look at his fellow members for recognition. Is Twitter taking over from the Good Book? Is "Wokeism" the newest religion - and if so, who would be its spiritual leader?But is the separation between Church and State starting to fade? Our Prime Minister Scott Morrison is a devout Pentecostalist who blesses his constituents (non-consensually). Our politicians are mulling a Religious Discrimination Bill which would give even greater freedom to Australians - and controversial rugby players such as Israel Folau - to copy and paste Bible passages on social. We see ourselves as a tolerant, enlightened society, so why do we go berserk whenever a new Mosque is being built out West? Malcolm's SSM postal vote solved homophobia once and for all, so why is Margaret Court still getting column inches?
