When we walk through something hard, our instinct is often to take control, fix it ourselves, or hold everything together for the people we love. But what if healing comes not from holding on—but from letting go? And what does letting go look like?In this episode, Amy and Marissa sit down with Kylie White—wife, mom of four teens, philanthropist, and a servant-leader in her family's business, Chick-fil-A. Kylie shares how God met her in the midst of a life-changing diagnosis and a pivotal moment of surrender. She opens up about her journey of letting go, discovering the dynamic power of the Holy Spirit, and finding a depth to her faith she never knew before.Kylie's story reveals how her letting go of control led to profound spiritual transformation, and how these lessons are shaping her life as a wife, mom, and leader. We hope this episode will inspire you to loosen your grip, find peace in God's presence, and trust in His faithfulness—even when the path ahead feels uncertain.Kylie White's Blog--Question of the Week: First, tell your kid(s) a story about a time when you stepped out in bold faith. What did that look like—whether big or small? “It's not who's right, but what's right,” asserts podcast guest Alex Rodriguez. The son of hardworking Cuban parents, Alex attended college on a baseball scholarship, hoping eventually to support his family. A torn rotator cuff abruptly cancelled the scholarship, forcing him to enroll in community college and get the job that began a 41-year relationship with Chick-fil-A. Regarding Chick-fil-A, Alex explains to host Dr. Matt Davis, “we don't just serve a chicken sandwich; we serve people,” a motto that identifies why the restaurant is different, and a philosophy closely linked to his mission. Alex recounts working with founder Truett Cathy, the struggles and amazing blessings as an owner-operator, and the joy of serving in a non-profit organization rescuing vulnerable souls from human trafficking and homelessness. Asked what makes him different, he quickly responds, “I know Who I serve.”

Richard Weylman was orphaned at age 6 and he lived in 19 foster homes and attended 11 different schools. Rather than becoming the victim of those circumstances, he overcame them and he has had remarkable business success, including as an award-winning General Sales Manager of Rolls Royce to Head Sales and Marketing for the Robb Report, a Magazine for the Luxury Lifestyle from its inception until its record liquidity event. A Hall of Fame inducted Keynote Speaker, Richard has also been inducted into the Customer Experience Hall of Fame for his legendary work helping brands engage with their customers and retain them. He is the author of two international bestsellers, the latest of which, The Power of Why: Breaking Out in a Competitive Marketplace is in seven languages and is also a CEO Reads best seller. His next book 100 Proven Ways to Acquire and Keep Clients for Life was released on March 12th, and is available for pre-order on Amazon, or your favorite bookstore. Finally, he is a Horatio-Alger nominee for his philanthropic work on behalf of orphans and widows. Questions · Could you share with us in your own words a little bit about how you got from where you were to where you are today? · This new book that was released almost 3 months now it's been out the book, 100 Proven Ways to Acquire and Keep Clients for Life. Could you share with our listeners maybe 3 overarching themes that the book covers? And who is the book really geared towards? · In your research, when you were talking to your different clients about the different ways that you can acquire and keep clients, did you find that there were some industries that were thriving with these four things that you've mentioned, based on the research and others? · Now Richard, could you share with our audience maybe one or two books that you've read, it could be a book that you read a very long time ago, or even one that you've read recently, but it had a great impact on you. · Now, Richard, could you share with our audience what's one thing that's going on in your life right now that you're really excited about? Either something you're working on to develop yourself or your people. · Where can listeners find you online? Highlights Richard's Journey Me: Now, we always like to give our guests a little opportunity to share a little bit about their journey. Could you share with us in your own words a little bit about how you got from where you were to where you are today? Richard shared that the key thing is when all of this stuff, he was an orphan, as mentioned in his introduction, and that was very kind. But he was orphaned, and he lived in 18 foster homes, went to 11 different schools. So, you learn just from life experiences, how to understand, how to adapt, how to connect, in his case with the people with whom he was living. But he thinks we all go through this similar journey in life, you learn how to connect or not with individuals. So, that really became the premise for all of his speaking and consulting. And they are a research-based consulting firm, they do a great deal of research about what the consumers' looking for, why they're looking for it. And most importantly, how salespeople, marketing people, business people can connect with the expectations, let's use that word, expectations of the consumer. So, that's what prompted his first book, Opening Closed Doors, Keys to Reaching Hard to Reach People then The Power of Why: Breaking Out in a Competitive Marketplace, which was mentioned. And those are in seven languages. And now his recent book, which really manifested itself after about October he would say in 2019, in the fall of 2019, it occurred to him that people were no longer talking about service anymore. They talked to people in their consulting projects, how would you rate the service of this company, and people didn't want to talk, they would say, “Well, the service is good. But let me tell you about the experience I had.” And it dawned on him that what people are really focused on good service is a minimum expectation today, what people really want, really want is an elevated experience, somebody who's thoughtful and kind and caring, and empathetic. So, that became the premise for the current book that's just come out, which is number one on Amazon hot new release. So, is that helpful? About the Book – Who the Book is Geared Towards and it's Overarching Themes – 100 Proven Ways to Acquire and Keep Clients for Life Me: So, you have this new book that was released almost 3 months now it's been out. And you said it's number one on the hot new list for Amazon. Could you share with our listeners maybe 3 overarching themes that the book covers? And who is the book really geared towards? Richard stated that that's it's a great question. The book itself is really geared, we'll start there, who reads this book? Anybody in sales, marketing, service, leadership, he's had over 2000 individuals that he knows of that are in either leadership roles or top advisors, top salespeople who have sent him emails because of the epiphany moments they've had in it and the reason he thinks that so many different types of people, it doesn't matter what industry, he's got people in real estate, he got a bunch of emails this morning, people in real estate, attorney, doctors, he had a dentist sent him an email, hairdresser. So, it really doesn't matter what industry you're in. What really matters is do you want to acquire and keep your clients for life? And he guesses the obvious question is, “Why wouldn't you want to keep your clients for life, given the cost of acquisition?” So, when he wrote the book, he didn't write it for any industry, he wrote it for individuals that really did want to, shall we say, connect with their customers or their clients in such a way that those individuals would never buy from anyone else in their space. And it really is the premise is to understand the lifetime value of a customer or a client. And a lot of business owners, and certainly salespeople, we don't often think about the lifetime value, we sell somebody something and we see it as a transaction. When you sell someone, it's not the end of something, it's the beginning of what could very well become a lifetime relationship with that individual every single time they need something that you may offer, they can reach out to you, and they become a customer for life. So, the question is, how do you do it? So, that's where the premise of the book came from and who he wrote it for. So, one of the overarching themes in interviewing literally hundreds, hundreds and hundreds of consumers. And the number really reaches over 1000 in all of their consulting work over the years from 2019 until now when he wrote the book, he would ask people, “What is something someone can do, or a company can do to get your attention and keep you as a client for life?” And they would tell him that, and they began to write those down. And that's how he came up with the 100 Proven Ways. He didn't set out to do 100 proven ways, but what they found out is today, there are four things people look for, these are the overarching themes. They want an individual and company that is thoughtful. In other words, they'll go the extra mile, do the extra thing, take the extra moment. Secondly, someone that's kind, will think about things from their perspective and do things that demonstrate kindness to them as an individual. Thirdly, someone that cares, cares enough to find out what they really want, what they really need, and what is the right, shall we say, item for them? The right haircut, the right prescription, the right legal advice, the right advisory advice, whatever, they want somebody that cares about them. And last but not least, they want someone in a company that's empathetic, someone that shall we say, demonstrates that even though I'm saying it's unique to me, my problem, and you've heard it 100 times as a salesperson, you know it's not unique. For me, it is unique. So, I appreciate your willingness to be empathetic. So, four things, thoughtful, caring, kind, empathetic, those are the overarching things. Industry Insights and Best Practices Based on Research from Book Me: So, they need to be thoughtful, they need to be kind, they need to be caring, and they need to be empathetic. In your research, when you were talking to your different clients about the different ways that you can acquire and keep clients, did you find that there were some industries that were thriving with these four things that you've mentioned, based on the research and others? Richard stated that it's really interesting Yanique mentioned that, and it's not so much industries, it's companies within that are doing well. Most industries are still in the transaction mode. Go to a restaurant, it's a transaction. If you order something online, it becomes a transaction. And as a result of that, people are looking for other options. So, what's happened is a few companies have really jumped to the front. And he'll just give you a couple of example, in the United States; they have a company called Chick-fil-A. Chick-fil-A is a chicken sandwich is basically what it is. He knew the founder, his name is Truett Cathy and they did a lot of traveling together, meetings together. And he would often say him, “Richard, now remember, we got to remind the crew here that we're not in a chicken business, we're in a people business.” So, they're closed every Sunday. So, that means if you want to put a characterize that differently, they're closed 52 days a year, that would mean they closed November 10 and re-open January 1, that's 52 days. They have the highest revenue per store than any other food franchise in the world. And they're closed from November 10 to January 1, and they're not open 24/7. So, the question is, why is that happening? Yes, it's a great chicken sandwich granted, but you get a chicken sandwich pretty much anywhere. What they really are known for is please, thank you, and my pleasure. And people sit in long lines at their drive thru, which are two and three lanes wide because people there say please, thank you, my pleasure. That's one brilliant example of how they do it. Give me another example, in the food industry, this company, for pets, and that company is called Chewy. Now, how has Chewy done, this young kid had started he said, when manufacturers and sellers of food products and other products for pets, they need to realize pets are part of the family. So, they need to take a family orientation and be kind, thoughtful, caring and empathetic with their customers about their pets. Well, they've done that, and just a quick, he (Richard) was speaking, he speaks all over the world. He's spoken at the Pegasus Hotel there in Jamaica many times for various conferences, and he will tell you that he was speaking at a conference in Nashville, Tennessee, he told the story of a woman who had posted on LinkedIn. She posted that she had a standing order with Chewy, this was in November when he was speaking, and her order for the cat food had just arrived. She posted on LinkedIn, “The cat food came, I called Chewy and said my cat has died. And I want to return the cat food. They said absolutely not; donate it to the local shelter. And we'll give you 100% credit on the bill.” The audience goes wow. And he said but that's only half the story. The other half that she wrote about was 3 days later, she got a bouquet of flowers, and a condolence card from the Customer Service Rep at Chewy. At that instant, this woman stood up in the middle of this ballroom of about 1000 people and scream, “That was my cat.” and held up her phone. She said, “I posted that this morning. I've already got 147 likes.” And at that moment, he just stopped and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, what does this tell us about Chewy?” And the whole room starts chanting, “We're switching to Chewy.” So, there's a message here. And it's the undercurrent of what's going on in business around the world. And it's not just in the US. He'll be in France again in October speaking in a large conference there; he goes to Asia a lot. And everywhere you go, people are really interested in doing business with individuals that are kind, thoughtful, caring, and empathetic and once he realized that, and then people began to share these ideas, if you would do this, I would be a loyal customer, he just thought it'd be helpful to put that out in the marketplace for anybody, regardless the kind of business you're in. Because it makes a big difference in your life. He heard from a guy that sells hot water heaters to hotels, and he said this book changed his business completely. So, that's the difference. Books that Have Had the Biggest Impact on Richard When asked about books that have had a great impact, Richard shared that one particularly, there's a series, his name is Bob Burg. And he's written a book, the original book, he was a co-author of a book called The Go-Giver: A Little Story about a Powerful Business Idea that is international bestseller, sold a couple million copies, what a fabulous book for anybody to read. And that would be one he'd recommend. And another one that he has co-authored with a guy named Jeff West is called Streetwise to Saleswise: Become ObjectionProofÔ and Beat the Sales Blues, it's really a great book, it just came out he would say a few months ago. And it's really a story, they write it in a story format and what he means by that is that it's like you're reading a novel, well, it is a novel. But as you're reading the novel, it's written in a way that allows you to understand various things you can do in shall we say in business to expand your influence, to make a significant impact and to really make a difference. Now, The Go-Giver book that he wrote, he's done a series Go-Giver Leader, The Go-Giver Sell More, and those are really dynamite books. But The Go-Giver, the original book is just oh my God, what a great book and they've sold millions of copies all over the world. And then the other one is Streetwise to Saleswise, another great book by he and a guy named Jeff West. That book has been out maybe a couple of months, but it's called Streetwise to Saleswise, and it's really written around the city of New Orleans and sales individual that went out there to shall we say, be in the sales business, it's a fabulous read, particularly people like novels that have read really great nuggets on how to be a better salesperson. What Richard is Really Excited About Now! When asked about something that he's really excited about, Richard shared that the book is doing extraordinarily well, he's been very grateful for that. It's been selected as the lead book for the London Book Fair and the Frankfurt Book Fair this year, which is a blessing. But what he's most excited about is he's getting in front of more and more audiences, he's in the Keynote Speaker Hall of Fame, and the Customer Experience Hall of Fame, and all of that is wonderful recognition. But what is really wonderful is when he has the privilege of being on the platform, and being able to share with audiences' ways in which they can elevate their client or customer experience, and stand apart from the competition, and that's what he's most excited about. He's got a lot of speaking engagements coming up this fall, and in places all over the world. And just to be a blessing to those people and to bring them some thoughts that perhaps they've never had, or to have reinforced that which is that they're doing so they really feel as though, “You know what, I'm on the right track, and we're going to continue to win more business.” So, those are the things that excites him. Where can listeners find Richard online? LinkedIn - Richard Weylman Website - http://www.richardweylman.com/ Richard shared that on the website, there you can download a chapter of his book free, you can read it, you can also order the book there of course. There's also, he does a great deal of media, he guesses there's probably 25 or 30, ABC, CBS, NBC and, Fox, both TV and radio segments there, you just click on media and you can listen and watch those on various topics. And then also under videos, you'll see a link there, you can go to learn services. And he puts up about he's going to guess 25 little video vignettes are a couple of minutes long that you can enjoy, they're all free, just wanted to plant those in your life. You can sign up for his performance tip that's the down at the bottom of every page but every 10 days he sends out researcher tips to about 20,000 people or subscribers, so it'd be wonderful if you subscribed. So, you want to go to www.richardweylman.com if you want him to speak at your conference, or at your upcoming meeting, whatever the case might be, there's a form there, fill it out, he responds to those. He actually gets those himself, he'd be happy to partner with you, and find a way that they can bring some additional learning to your organization, to your people so that they can elevate their business performance as well. Me: All right. Thank you so much for sharing, Richard. We just want to extend our deepest gratitude to for taking time out of your very busy schedule and hopping on this podcast. You shared some great insights and nuggets as it relates to some of the keys that you need to focus on in order to acquire and keep your clients for life especially based on the research that you did. And we love the examples that you gave, they were definitely relevant and something that I believe will motivate the audience to definitely go out and get a copy of your book, whether it be in soft or hard copy so they can try and elevate their own client experiences. It's Wednesday, April 10th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Violence against Christians up 45% in India The Evangelical Fellowship of India released a report on the persecution of Christians in the country. Last year, Christians faced over 600 incidents of violence in India. That's up 45% from 2022. Incredibly, nearly half of the incidents – 275 to be precise -- occurred in India's state of Uttar Pradesh. The report noted, “The state also leads in arrests of pastors and believers, often on allegations of forced conversions, despite lacking substantial evidence.” Please pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters in India, the 11th most dangerous country worldwide in which to be a Christian. Scotland's proposed conversion therapy ban The Christian Institute is poised to challenge Scotland's proposed conversion therapy ban if it violates religious freedom. The proposal would crack down on attempts to change someone's so-called sexual orientation or gender identity. The Christian Institute warns the proposal is vague and could be used against pastors and parents. The organization's public affairs officer, Joanna Cook, warned, “Those campaigning for a conversion practices law … want a new speech crime, a thought crime. And, I'm afraid, the Scottish government's proposals give them that.” Church of England invests $10 million in youth outreach The Church of England announced last month that it is investing 8.5 million pounds in youth programs. That's over $10 million U.S. dollars. This comes as the Church of England is losing congregants, especially among children. Adult attendance was down 23% in 2022 compared with 2019. The number of children attending was down 28% over the same period. The decline comes as many in the Church of England are supporting sexually perverted lifestyles. Jonathan Pryke, senior minister at Jesmond Parish Church, told Evangelical Focus, “In general, where churches are growing, they have a robust view of Biblical authority and teach accordingly, with a sense of urgency about the Gospel message.” 2 Timothy 4:2-3 says, “Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but, having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.” Declining Southern Baptist membership In the United States, the Southern Baptist Convention reports declining membership. Lifeway Research released analysis on the denomination last week. Lifeway noted, “Among the 50,423 active congregations in the Southern Baptist Convention in 2021, 2% disbanded or closed and 0.5% left or were disaffiliated from the Convention by the time the 2022 data was compiled.” The Southern Baptist Convention lost over 1,200 congregations in 2022. It lost over 1,000 congregations in 2021 and 2020 as well. In most cases, the churches were disbanded or closed. Arizona Supreme Court upholds 1864 abortion ban Yesterday, Arizona's Supreme Court ruled in favor of the state's 1864 ban on abortion. The law prohibits nearly all abortions. The U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision of 1973 had blocked the law. The more recent Dobbs ruling overturned Roe, making way for Arizona's abortion ban to go back into effect. However, Planned Parenthood continued to challenge the law. After yesterday's ruling, the ban on abortion is back in force. Jake Warner with Alliance Defending Freedom said, “We celebrate the Arizona Supreme Court's decision that allows the state's pro-life law to again protect the lives of countless, innocent unborn children.” Chick-fil-A made $20 billion in 2023 Nation's Restaurant News reports Chick-fil-A made over $20 billion in sales last year, up 14% from 2022. Since 2018, the fast-food chain has doubled its sales volume. Its closest competitor was Popeyes which grew 10% last year. Chick-fil-A continues its growth while still being closed on Sundays as it honors the Fourth Commandment. The restaurant's website says, “Having worked seven days a week in restaurants open 24 hours, [founder Truett Cathy] saw the importance of closing on Sundays so that he and his employees could set aside one day to rest, enjoy time with their families and loved ones or worship if they choose — a practice we uphold today.” Total solar eclipse from Mexico to Canada And finally, millions of Americans turned out to view a total solar eclipse on Monday. The path of totality stretched from Mazatlán, Mexico to Newfoundland in Canada. The path covered 15 states in the U.S. from Texas to Maine. Check out some awesome total eclipse photos through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. The last time the U.S. experienced a total solar eclipse was 2017. The next one won't happen until 2044. Psalm 19:1 says, "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.” Close And that's The World View in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, April 10th in the year of our Lord 2024. How can you tell if someone needs encouragement? If they are breathing, according to Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A.Children can easily and quickly become discouraged, especially when tired or stressed, and become negative, self-critical, and depressed. The Bible mentions “encouragement” a lot, including Hebrews 3:13, which tells us to “encourage each other daily.”You can create an encouraging environment for your loved ones by building up and encouraging them more than criticizing and correcting them. Kids will know it is OK and safe to make mistakes and learn that God can use their failures to help them grow.Parents should be their family's CEO — Chief Encouragement Officers. For more information about a Proven Process that is helping boys grow into godly men, visit Trail Life USA or RaisingGodlyBoys.com.

She became an operator of a new Chick-fil-A restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama – making her the youngest Operator at that time. Though she had just finished her freshman year at Samford University, Truett believed in his daughter and handed her the keys. She took a year off from school to run the restaurant and, in that time, hired fellow Samford student, John White, who she married. Throughout their marriage, Trudy and John White have actively sought opportunities to connect with and invest in others' lives. They served for 20 years with the International Mission Board; 10 of those years as missionaries in Brazil where they ultimately started a small church as well as “Lar WinShape,” a home for children in need. The Whites are co-founders of Lifeshape, an organization committed to restoring children at risk, cultivating servant leaders and discipling the nations. They also founded Impact 360 Institute, which offers life-changing experiences that help students live out their faith with confidence. The program includes worldview studies, experiential learning, international travel and leadership training. President Stephen Haines with Artisan Built Communities joins the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to discuss new and upcoming communities and give updates on popular neighborhoods, including Heritage Pointe at The Georgian, Stratford at NatureWalk and Serenity in Hapeville. Haines joins host Carol Morgan on the All About Real Estate segment. A familiar face in the homebuilding industry, Haines has been a part of the industry from a very young age and has had the opportunity to work for many big builders throughout his 25-year career. He joined the Artisan Built Communities team four years ago and now leads the organization and its growth efforts. Founded in 2012, Artisan Built Communities specializes in constructing residences that buyers proudly call home. The builder takes special care to create stunning exteriors, focus on architecture and specialize in a home's finer touches. Haines said, “While we are a production builder, we like to build things that are a notch above and [Serenity] is no exception.” Serenity at Hapeville is a community located just north of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in a city made famous by General Motors and Chick-fil-A Founder S. Truett Cathy. The independent town extends across two-square miles and is well-known for its vibrant arts scene! A unique feature of the community, the Hapeville entrance is marked by a beautiful mural painted by a locally famous muralist known for his work across the metro area. Haines said, “The mural greets you as you come in and it sets the tone for what you're going to experience once you come inside.” A unique product that is very different from the builder's work in Paulding County, Serenity at Hapeville showcases attached two-story townhomes with only 25 available opportunities. The City of Hapeville influenced the first set of units to take on the look of a warehouse that has been a part of the Hapeville landscape for many years. The building bears the city name on both sides, with an exterior that takes inspiration from old factories and warehouses. The rest of the community's four buildings, with 21 units, surround a private pocket park to give residents the freedom to leave their homes to take their favorite furry friend for a walk close to home. A fire pit installation, perfect for community gatherings through the seasons, centers the green space. Many units feature a private patio, with a few enjoying an upstairs balcony! To complement the first set of units, the remaining four buildings embrace a retro-modern exterior detailed by brick siding, black windows and more. Guests: Jordan Whicker, Ethan Severin, Cole Travis The Ultimate Gift is a fictional story about the journey of a young man named Jason Stevens who is the spoiled, rotten grand-nephew of Red Stevens, who leaves a series of “gifts” for Jason to learn, under the guidance and tutelage of his attorney friend Theodore J. Hamilton. Each chapter is a new “gift” that Jason must learn - and, as a young man, you need to learn as well. The Gift of Learning Education is a lifelong journey whose destination expands as you travel. “The only thing I can honestly say that I know now that I didn't know when we left here four weeks ago is that the desire and hunger for education is the key to real learning.” It takes a lot of humility to be a lifelong learner! Learning also takes hard work - learning doesn't just happen, you have to make plans to learn!!! The greatest insult is to tell someone that you have nothing to learn from them! Find people you want to learn something from, take them to coffee, and ask them good questions! The Gift of Problems “If we are not allowed to deal with small problems, we will be destroyed by slightly larger ones.” The Coddling of the American Mind by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt - prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child…good reminder! When we can learn from our own problems, we begin to deal with life. When we can learn from other people's problems, we begin to master life. What life lessons have you learned from watching others? The world needs more Jesus…YOU have an opportunity to bring the Light of the World to address the problems in the world! The Gift of Family Jason went to the Red Stevens Home for Boys to see the value of family from those who look like they don't have family. It's Better to Build Boys Than to Mend Men by C. Truett Cathy…the founder of Chick-fil-A was incredibly involved in the lives of young men, especially those without a family. Family is not as much about being related by blood as it is about relating through love. If you don't have a biological “family,” you can develop and invest in a spiritual family! T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website. Huge thank you to Jared Wood for allowing T4M to use his music in our intro and outro selections.
Guest: Mike Thornberry Categories for resources: Marriage and Family - resources to help you be a better husband and a better father Passion and Devotion - books that encourage, inspire, spur you on! Biblical Literacy/Discipleship - books that help you better understand God's Word Spiritual Disciples and Maturity - the essence of the Christian walk Cultural Awareness - how do I understand the issues in the world around me? Good literature - what are some of the great classics that you need to read? The Prodigal God by Tim Keller - come face-to-face with God's “prodigal” love for His children Encounters with Jesus by Tim Keller - unexpected answers to life's biggest questions It's Better to Build Boys Than Mend Men by S. Truett Cathy (founder of Chick-fil-A) - invest in young men and train them up right! The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch - incredible life principles by which to live - read the book and watch his lecture! Captains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling - great story about the maturity of a young man Make Your Bed by Admiral William H. McRaven - the road to success begins by taking the first step - how to develop a pattern of success in life The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom - how to be thankful for your suffering and the power of true forgiveness The Bait of Satan by John Bevere - the power of forgiveness When People are Big and God is Small by Edward Welch - don't allow the actions of others to control your identity Counted Worthy by Connor Bales - developing a proper perspective on suffering Tortured for Christ by Richard Wurmbrand - you have to stand for truth regardless of the cost! Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus by Nabeel Qureshi - understand the difference between Islam and Christianity and the cost that many face in following Christ Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand - incredible story of God's redemption and a life changed - made into an incredible movie The Swans are not Silent series by John Piper - introduction to some of the great saints of our faith Amazing Grace by Eric Metaxas - the story of William Wilberforce, one of the great men of God - also made into a great movie Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus by Lois Tverberg - learning more about the Jewish culture to understand more about the person and ministry of Jesus Expository Apologetics by Voddie Baucham - reading Scripture through the lens of Scripture - the Bible is both a mirror and a window The Normal Christian Life by Watchman Nee - if you're not suffering in this world, you're probably not walking with the Lord T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website. Exploring the Power of Challenger Brands The Entrepreneurial You podcast discusses the concept of a 'challenger brand' with Mike Sullivan, the president and CEO of Loomis, the US leading challenger brand advertising company. Sullivan defines a challenger brand as any brand that is not the market leader and outlines the three states of a challenger brand: state of the market, state of mind, and state of readiness. He then discusses the importance of humility and focus when it comes to competing in the market, and the importance of talking to customers to identify positioning in the market. The Power of Challenger Brands Underdogs' in the market can have a competitive advantage over category leaders by flying under the radar, being underestimated and being more nimble. Inspired stories of challenger brands succeeding against all odds gives us hope. Companies like Dollar Shave Club Warby Park, Red Bull and REI have all been successful in their respective markets by understanding their customer base, hiring people who are like their customer base and reflecting that back to their customers. An example of this is REI, which shut all its stores on Black Friday to support its environmentally conscious customers. Strong Brand Through Values This conversation focuses on the importance of culture in building a strong brand and how leaders can define, build and maintain their culture. Examples of successful brands that have stuck to their values, such as Chick-fil-A and their founder Truett Cathy, are provided. It is suggested that leaders need to get clarity on their brand and their values and be willing to take calculated risks. It is also suggested that leaders should take time to listen to their customers, peers, competitors and their intuition to get clarity and make decisions. The importance of having a trusted network of peers and advisors is also discussed. Challenger Brands This conversation focuses on the topic of building challenger brands. Mike Sullivan, President and CEO of Lewis, a leading advertising agency, encourages dreamers and believers to take risks and invest in themselves, regardless of their current situation. He advises aligning oneself with others who have already succeeded and listening to one's heart. He also mentions his book, The Voice of the Underdog: How Challenger Brands Create Distinction by Thinking Culture First, co-authored with Michael Tuggle. On the outskirts of Atlanta, we drove past the waterfall, walked through the front doors, and stepped into a world of positivity and smiles. Each delivered through a well-rehearsed cocktail of sincere stories that provided a peek into why this “chicken business” is a homebase of hope and life-change for so many. One small business is a powerful, accessible opportunity for so many teenagers and adults to engage in their community, develop relationships, solve problems, earn income, and develop powerful and usable skills. A collection of aligned small businesses, if well led and obsessively focused on vision, mission, and values, has the opportunity to scale the hope and life-change beyond one or two locations. This is the opportunity for Chick-Fil-A. Indeed, their chicken sandwich is remarkable, use of “my pleasure” noticeable, and waffle fries laced with a special serum of deliciousness - and their support of local small business is a Master's class of intentional scale. It is not lost on the Support Center staff that their primary purpose is the support of the almost 500,000 team members among the chicken-diaspora across North America (and soon to be other International markets). You cannot walk a meaningful distance in their appropriately named Support Center without confronting a well-broadcast corporate purpose, mission, unique set of values, and foundational principles. Purpose is as pervasive as a number one combo meal on a Saturday after the little league game or dance competition. Purpose is intentionally over-communicated with three distinctives that were tangible and delivered in a kind, sometimes goofy package of care as defined by competence and warmth. Truett Cathy took one restaurant and built the systems and the team to scale that one restaurant to nearly three thousand. That is good news for business owners with one location or three…with two employees or thirty. What scales up, can also scale down. There are three simple elements on display at Chick-Fil-A central for the exponential spread of culture that require the grit of an entrepreneur and the roll-your-eye goofiness most entrepreneurs struggle to hurdle. The first of these three simple elements is consistency. One task completed with consistency over a long period of time makes a mark. One task completed without consistency is a fad with little impact. Inherent within consistency is the concept of a fanatical and firm footing, a concrete base with very little movement that can be trafficked relentlessly. Faith is placed in solid things because reliability, albeit goofy, beats the in-the-moment hipster vibe of trendy unsteadiness. How can Chick-Fil-A ensure the now famed “my pleasure” is repeated millions of times daily? Relentless consistency…even when it is goofy. The second element that leads to the exponential spread of culture is amplification. Pandemics spread through amplification; genetic copies spread from carrier to carrier at high speeds with consistency. Your local municipal water system might be distributed through amplification. A series of pump stations systematically placed throughout the distribution channels of the pipes that run throughout your city or town. Each pump offers a boost to the system so that the home furthest from the source has the same pressure as the home closest to the source. Messages too spread through amplification. A small group of message carriers spread their consistent message to other carriers over and over again. That message requires the third element that leads to the exponential spread of culture…repetition. “Repetition is the mother of all learning”; a refrain my first manager would share with me…repetitively. I've heard it said, “if you are not annoying someone with your message, then you know your message is not landing.” We tend to look down on repetition as non-innovative. Truthfully, our real struggle is with repetition void of meaning, warmth, sincerity, care, empathy, and intentionality. Business owners look around and wonder why the big companies are “lucky” to have great culture. At the Chick-Fil-A Support Center, consistent, amplified, and repetitive messaging is…well, consistent, amplified, and repetitive. Not requiring a degree, or the “right conditions”, business owners big and small have an opportunity to rinse and repeat.
We've been talking about Chick-Fil-A this week. This past Monday we talked about Chick-Fil-A putting their emphasis on leadership (rather than investing), and Wednesday we interviewed my brother-in-law, Brad Burkholder, an operator. Today we're going to talk about how we don't have to be on the clock 24/7. So many Realtors feel they must be on the clock 24/7—always answering their phone, always available. But this isn't the case. I have a cut off time where I no longer answer calls for the night, and I often sleep in because I stay up late working in the evenings. It all goes back to setting boundaries. Chick-Fil-A is closed on Sundays. Truett Cathy wanted his employees to be able to go to church and spend time with their families, so he was committed to being closed on Sundays. He got a lot of flak for it with people telling him he wouldn't make money or that he wouldn't survive, but if you look at the numbers today, Chick-Fil-A is making more money in less days per week than the other restaurants. I really feel like a lot of this success goes back to the operator and the fact that they are often involved in supporting their community. When a business supports the community, the community wants to support them. That's something that can be applied to your real estate business as well. If we look at some numbers, we find that the average McDonald's franchise does about 3 million a year in net sales. Burger King does around one and a half million a year and Wendy's brings in about 2.17 million. So, McDonald's brings in the most of the three. If we compare McDonald's with Chick-Fil-A—the average freestanding Chick-Fil-A makes more than 8 million dollars in sales a year. Many of the operators I personally know who own stores bring in way past 10 million, but even on the conservative side of 8 million a year, Chick-Fil-A is doing more than two and a half times the volume of McDonald's. Wendy's, Burger King, and McDonald's are open seven days a week, sometimes 24 hours a day and don't bring in the sales Chick-Fil-A does while being closed Sundays and being open less hours daily. So, when you get frustrated as a Realtor and feel like you have to work constantly to have success—think again. Chick-Fil-A's business model has shown that you don't have to work 24/7 to be successful. Even if you're only open six days a week and have limited hours, you can have a lot more success than your competitors. I hope you can think about this with your real estate business and learn to say no to working all the time. You need that balance. Thanks for listening to the podcast and I'll see you guys on the next episode. Resources Free social media coaching calls are back!
