Series: Signs & GloryTitle: "Do you want to get well?"Scripture: John 5:1-18Bottom line: To find healing and salvation, we must 1) be willing to change, 2) find hope to change, and 3) surrender to change.INTRODUCTIONCONTEXTSERMON OUTLINECONCLUSIONNOTESOUTLINESQUESTIONS TO CONSIDER DISCUSSION QUESTIONSMAIN REFERENCES USEDMy opening prayer: Lord God, help us grow to be and do like Jesus, while abiding in him and leading others to do the same. INTRODUCTION“There was an occasion when the army of Alexander the Great was engaged in a very serious battle, and in the course of the battle, one of the soldiers fled the scene. He was a coward. After the battle, the coward was apprehended and brought to Alexander's tent. As the man stood trembling before his general, Alexander looked at him and said, “Why did you run?” The soldier said, “I was afraid.” Alexander said: “So I see. What is your name?” The soldier mumbled his answer so that Alexander couldn't hear him, so the great warrior said: “Speak up. What is your name?” The young soldier looked at him and said, “My name is Alexander.” Alexander the Great replied, “Either change your behavior or change your name.”CONTEXTJohn moves forward in chapters 5-10 highlighting the escalating conflict between Jesus and the Jewish leadership. John will use Jesus' encounters with others to escalate and teach/reveal who he is leading the Jewish leaders to grow more insistent on his execution for blashemy. They are convinced that he is claiming to be another god equal to God the Father and they cannot rest until he is dealt with. For he is leading the people astray. These encounters will include several "I am" statements designed to reveal who Jesus really is. It's at this point that I'd like to share with you how someone described Jesus. After all, many of us struggle with following Jesus because we also are unclear about who healed us. Lesslie Newbigin, British pastor and missionary from the past wrote:"The one of whom we are reading is the one who was finally rejected with unique unanimity by the representatives of all the forces that control human behavior (cf. I Cor. 2:8), was subjected to that death which implied the curse of God as well as of men, was raised to new life, and became the author of new life for all who believed. It is this man whose identity is being defined in these passages." -Lesslie NewbiginHe says that we cannot understand what John is doing and writing without remembering that this is all about believing that Jesus is the Messiah, the king of kings, the Son of man and the son of God and that by believing have life in his name who died for our sins and was raised to prove his atoning sacrifice for us works in his Father's eyes. We are forgiven because of him!SERMON Bottom line: To find healing and salvation, we must 1) be willing to change, 2) find hope to change, and 3) surrender to change.According to Pastor Mark Johnston, Jesus' question, and the impact it makes, raises at least four major issues for this man and for all people.WANT TO CHANGE? The truth about our life--do we even want to change?HELPLESS TO CHANGE. The fact of our own helplessness--can we even change without outside help?SIN KEEPS US FROM CHANGE. The cause of all our trouble--do we realize what causes our sickness is sin? (Generally or specifically)HOPE FOR CHANGE IS FOUND IN JESUS. The hope that is found in Jesus--Healing and salvation are made possible by Jesus sovereignly initiating compassionately.CONCLUSIONBottom line: To find healing and salvation, we must 1) be willing to change, 2) find hope to change, and 3) surrender to change.Do I want to get well even if it means change?Do I acknowledge that I cannot change myself?Do I realize that the reason I cannot change on my own is sin?Am I ready and willing to surrender to Jesus so that I can change? What about you?Peter puts it all in perspective in his first sermon:““Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”” Acts 2:36-39 NIVInvitationHow do we respond? Answer 2 questions:Take out a card or piece of paper right now. Write down the answer to these questions: What is God saying to me right now? What am I going to do about it? Write this down on a sheet of paper. What I hear you saying, Lord, is ___________________.[my name] is going to believe/do __________________________________________________ as a result. Finally, share this with your Home or Mission group this week when you gather as a testimony about what God is doing in your life. You don't have to get too specific to give him praise.Lord's Supper, 1 Cor 11:23-26 is good passage. Also, say something like, "Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again." (past, present, and future)PrayNOTES"This reality should motivate us to labor with all our might to make Jesus Christ and his gospel known and loved throughout the world. Augustine wrote this beautiful reflection about Jesus Christ:You are ever active, yet always at rest. You gather all things to yourself, though you suffer no need. ... You welcome those who come to you, though you never lost them. You release us from our debts, but you lose nothing thereby. You are my God, my Life, my holy Delight, but is this enough to say of you? Can any man say enough when he speaks of you? Yet woe betide those who are silent about you! (Confessions [IX 1], 181)May we, by the grace of God, never be silent." -Matt Carter"I'll Do It Later (v. 35):Jesus asks the disciples a pointed question: "Don't you say, 'There are still four more months, and then comes the harvest'?" (v. 35). He's saying, "Do you guys think you need to wait before reaping the fruit of the gospel? Are you hoping it will come later? You're wrong; look at the Samaritans coming right now. What are you waiting for? The time is now!" Jesus is driving the urgency of the gospel home to the hearts of his disciples. We don't wait for a different time or a better time; the harvest is now. Go, do the work of sharing the gospel right now. Charles Spurgeon, preaching on this passage, challenged his congregation:Some of you good people, who do nothing except go to public meetings, the Bible readings, and prophetic conferences, and other forms of spiritual [indulgence], would be a good deal better Christians if you would look after the poor and needy around you. If you would just tuck up your sleeves for work, and go and tell the gospel to dying men, you would find your spiritual health mightily restored, for very much of the sickness of Christians comes through their having nothing to do. All feeding and no working gives men spiritual indigestion. Be idle, careless, with nothing to live for, nothing to care for, no sinner to pray for, no backslider to lead back to the cross, no trembler to encourage, no little child to tell of a Savior, no grey-headed man to enlighten in the things of God, no object, in fact, to live for; and who wonders if you begin to groan, and to murmur, and to look within, until you are ready to die of despair? Series: Signs & GloryTitle: "What does authentic faith look like?Scripture: John 4:43-54John 1:9-12; 8:31-32Bottom line: Authentic faith looks like an actual commitment, built on an informed belief, and a growing dependency of God.INTRODUCTIONCONTEXTSERMON OUTLINECONCLUSIONNOTESOUTLINESQUESTIONS TO CONSIDER DISCUSSION QUESTIONSMAIN REFERENCES USEDMy opening prayer: Lord God, help us grow to be and do like Jesus, while abiding in him and leading others to do the same. INTRODUCTIONToday we're answer the question, "What does authentic faith look like?" When I think of the word authentic, I think of collections where value is based on the something rare being authenticated or declared the real thing. The most valuable American coin today is a 1794 silver dollar called the Flowing Hair Silver Dollar. It has lady liberty on one side and an American eagle on the other. Many believe that it was the first coin minted by the US government. There were only 1800 made and experts think only about 120 remain. It last sold for 12 million dollars. But it's only worth 12 million dollars if it's an authentic Flowing Hair Silver Dollar. The question today is what does authentic faith look like. We're asking this question to setup the more important question, "Is my faith authentic?"CONTEXTJesus has been talking with the woman at the well. He and the 12 got to see a whole town come to Christ. It has been an amazing day. The enemies of the Jews (the Samaritans) have trusted the Jewish Messiah! There is no earthly reason why they would do this. Only God.John will use this town of people in Sychar to expose the contrast with the way the Jews are responding (en masse) to Jesus. (Cf. John 1:11-12)John will also contrast the nobleman's growing faith with the hesitant faith of Nicodemus. What does authentic faith look like?Is my faith authentic?SERMON Bottom line: Authentic faith looks like an actual commitment, built on an informed belief, and a growing dependency on God.What does authentic faith look like? (Help from Matt Carter's commentary)I. Actual commitment--not just spiritual curiosity.Nobleman embraced Light of the world and Savior of the world.Overall response is rejection of Jews (cf. John 1:9-12); still some exceptions; not unlike us today. This contrast shows us what authentic faith looks like.Spiritual curiosity ≠ Authentic faithJesus condemns them for lack of faith and desire for "signs and wonders""You" is plural meaning the Jews and not just the nobleman. Maybe even in further contrast (like the Centurion)Samaritans have authentic faith in that town--they took Jesus as his word. No signs and wonders needed.II. Informed belief--not just emotional feelings.Requires understanding certain truths about Jesus.Content of our faith. Word > ExperienceAre you a follower? Why? For what he did or who he is?Nobleman looking for a miracle? Yes, but takes Jesus at his word instead of having to see it happen instantly. Similar to Samaritans. We aren't called to a blind faith or emotional faith, though it can be emotional. We have a reasonable faith. Who is Jesus? Title so far in John include:Son of GodSon of ManMessiah/ChristWord of GodKing of IsraelLamb of GodIII. Growing dependence--not just a single decision.2X it says nobleman "believed." (4:51-53)Same with Samaritans. (39-41)In neither case are we told WHEN they were saved. John shows it's a continual belief that truly saves or demonstrates authentic faith. It starts with a moment and decision--but it never ends. We persevere in the faith over time.Pointing to a past decision isn't enough if not walking in it. We'll know your status based on your fruit. Cf. Hebrews 3:12-14; Galatians 5:23-24John 1:!2 those who are believing (present tense) in his name.John 8:31 if you "continue" in my word.To "continue" or "hold to" his word is to "abide" or "remain" in Christ.Applications/questions:Are you spiritually curious? That's fine. Just don't think you're secure and good with the Lord just because you're spiritual or open. Christ calls us to follow him the rest of our life. Until you surrender to that, you're just curious. It's not a convenient faith that he calls us to--it's a costly faith. He calls us to ultimately come and die. Is your faith rooted on how you feel? I feel close to God today but not tomorrow. Emotions are a legitimate part of the human experience--even in our spiritual life. But we root our faith in truth--God's word is truth. Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth..." We have an informed faith; a reasonable faith; not a blind faith. Is your faith growing? Are you abiding in Jesus daily? Are you walking with God daily? These are different ways of asking the question, am I growing in dependence on the Lord?CONCLUSIONBottom line: Authentic faith starts with an actual commitment, and an informed belief on the word, and a growing dependence. What about you? Is your faith authentic? Here's another way to look at it.How do you know that you're married?Well, you might say, I have a wedding ring and a marriage license. I could respond, well, I know people who have a marriage license and maybe even still wear their wedding ring. But they are no longer married. The only way to truly know you're married is because you live the married life with your spouse. You raise the kids together. You take care of the house together. You do life together. The same is true with authentic faith. What does authentic faith look like? It looks like an actual commitment, built on an informed faith, and a growing dependence. What about you? Is your faith authentic? If not, what can you do?Repent--turn from the way you're living life and turn back to the trust and follow Jesus' words, ways and works.Believe--Rest on the calling you've received; build on the word of God; pray towards growing in Christ.`Peter puts it all in perspective in his first sermon:““Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. (past, present, and future)PrayNOTES"Jesus was saying, "Your experience with the Samaritans is one of reaping where you did not sow," and that surely was the case. They had not sowed, but they reaped. In our age some of us may sow, and some of us may reap. The thrust of these verses is that there is going to be a good deal of reaping, but the implication also is that sometimes we may sow and never see the results. I am reminded of the story of George Müller who founded many orphanages in the last century. Early in his life Müller made the acquaintance of three men, and he began to pray for their salvation. Müller lived a long time, but when he died, none of those men had yet trusted Christ. It is recorded in his diary that he prayed for these men daily during all those years. But that is not the end! The glorious fact is that all three of those men did meet Christ-two of them in their seventies and one in his eighties! Müller sowed, but someone else reaped. Whether we find ourselves sowing or reaping, our lives are to be permeated with a sense of urgency. Jesus' harvest mentality was part of the secret of his life. We also are meant to be harvesting!" -Kent Hughes, p. 139"This reality should motivate us to labor with all our might to make Jesus Christ and his gospel known and loved throughout the world. Augustine wrote this beautiful reflection about Jesus Christ:You are ever active, yet always at rest. You gather all things to yourself, though you suffer no need. ... God's plan is clear. “He is not willing that any should perish” (2 Pet 3:9). He doesn't want anyone to reject Jesus Christ as Savior and spend eternity in the Lake of Fire. God's plan is for you to grow to spiritual maturity and re-present Christ in your life. To do this you need to learn under the ministry of a well-qualified pastor. "If you love Me you will obey Me and My mandates are not hard” (1 John 5:3). The real you is what you think and this includes your motives, your intentions and your desires. When you believe in Jesus Christ “You are sealed until the day of redemption” (Eph 4:30). Ephesians 4:29-32 “The Kindness that Gives Life”Summer Sermon Series: “Virtues that Keep Us Stable Leo Durocher is a name that will forever live in baseball lore. Durocher attained his fame as both a player and a manager and was enshrined for his accomplishments on the baseball diamond by being inducted in 1994 into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Nicknamed “Leo the Lip,” reporters could always count on Durocher for some offbeat quote they could use to generate fan interest in their regular columns. Some of Durocher’s quotes bordered on the religious, as in, “God watches over drunks and third basemen.” Some of them were anti-authoritarian, as in, “I’ve never questioned the integrity of an umpire; their eyesight? Maybe. But not their integrity.” And some of them were remarkably cutting edge, as in his response to a question on Jackie Robinson, the first black player in the major leagues: “I don’t care if the guy is yellow or black, or if he has stripes like a…zebra. I’m the manager of this team and I say he plays.” But of all the Leo the Lip quotes for which Durocher is famous, the one that stands out among the rest and has bled over into so many other areas in life where competition is the name of the game is his saying, “Nice guys finish last.” I remember when I first heard that Durocher quote as a young boy, I thought to myself, “I hope that’s not so. I hope nice guys can do better than that.” And now that I’m much older, I haven’t changed my mind one bit. I still am hopeful that nice people won’t find themselves consigned to the cellar. Because now more than ever, our society is in need of nice people to emerge and to make their influence known, especially in this day when it sure seems that little more than meanness abounds. It makes you ask the question, “Where is all of this meanness coming from?” A good place to begin is by connecting it to what the Bible calls sin, which is a deficiency all of us human beings share. That’s always why I have to chuckle when I’m watching the talking heads on television offering their commentary on the latest manifestation of meanness and when it comes to offering a way forward, one of them will say something along the lines of, “Now is the time for us to call upon our better angels,” as if all of the meanness that has afflicted our modern day is like a pair of pants we got dirty and simply need to change. Were it as simple as that – to be able to change our ways just as easily as it is to change our clothing. And yet, when you look at how at how the Apostle Paul called the church in Ephesus to offer its culture a transforming witness to what the power of the Holy Spirit might do in a person’s life, that’s precisely the image he employed to convey his message. He speaks of it as a change of clothing. Granted, Paul goes into much more detail than that in terms of how the Holy Spirit of God, through our faith in God’s gift of Jesus Christ, has “sealed us for the day of redemption” so that we find both the power and the motivation to take off one way one of living and relating to others in order that we might put on an entirely new set of attitudes and expressions that better reflect the presence of Jesus in us. Here’s how Paul phrases it in the twenty-second verse of this fourth chapter: “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; (in order) to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Here is the context. The church at Ephesus was a multi-ethnic, multi-racial fellowship, which stands to reason. Ephesus itself was something of a melting pot in the first century world, situated as it was at an intersection of major trade routes in the Roman Empire. As the book of Acts tells us, Paul’s message of Jesus Christ had reached both Jews and Gentiles in that community so that the church at Ephesus reflected the diversity of such a cosmopolitan city. But as we all know from our own experience today, our common confession of Jesus Christ doesn’t automatically translate into “the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Eph. 4:3). We have to work at forging deep connections with one another, lest we see our oneness in Jesus weakened by cultural differences and political differences and personality differences and all manner of other differences that are too numerous to name. And how do we best do that? According to Paul, we stay in touch with the grace that changed us from the hapless and hopeless people that we were to a people who, through Jesus Christ, have experienced a renewing presence that opens to us possibilities that we never would have known by ourselves. “Quit being so mean to one another,” is essentially what Paul says to the church. “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. (Instead) be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” The word for “kindness” Paul uses here is an interesting word. It means more than merely being nice to others. That’s how we normally define kindness. To say a person is kind is to say that he or she is nice. And while that’s not an untrue assumption, it doesn’t go far enough. According to Scripture, a kind person is a useful person, a person who serves a purpose. In other words, if all of those words Paul says that need to be expunged from our relationships with others because they make us what we might call today “dysfunctional” people, then our expressions of kindness toward others enable us to be the opposite of that, or “functional” in our dealings with one another. Is that how you characterize your relationships with other people? Are you able to cut others some slack when they disappoint you or deceive you because you know that deep down in your heart of hearts you have those same tendencies, which you are only able to keep under wraps because of the grace God showed you and continues to show you through your faith in Jesus Christ? You see, there’s something else in this passage that we don’t automatically recognize. The verb we normally translate “be” as in “be kind to one another” actually should be translated “become.” “Become kind and compassionate to one another.” In other words, this kindness requires a conversion, a transformation. Just as we change our worn and soiled and dirty clothes on an everyday basis, so must we rid ourselves of these natural human tendencies to wall ourselves off from others and to see them as threats and to show them contempt and disdain when they fail to live up to our expectations in order that we might grow into a divine, God-centered, Christ-honoring way of relating to others, one which is characterized by mercy and by grace, the same mercy and grace God showed us by accepting us through our faith in Christ. I don’t know if there has ever been a time when there has been so much meanness in the world. There probably has; it just seems that today there is more meanness than ever. But at the same time we see the meanness, can we not also see the tremendous opportunity we have to inject kindness into the culture so that in the midst of the meanness mercy might begin to do what mercy always does when it melts away the bitterness and rage and anger and converts it into something more purposeful, more functional? Some of you will remember when Southwest Airlines burst onto the scene. It was a time when competition in the airline industry was pretty fierce, and Southwest saw the chance to take what analysts have come to call a “blue ocean” strategy. Instead of circling the market with the other sharks in the same vicious ways, Southwest decided to do things differently, which in the beginning their competitors saw as quirky and offbeat, though they soon came to see it as transformational and began to adopt some of Southwest’s practices so that over the course of time Southwest Air ultimately changed the market. For example, Dustin and Caren Moore were on a Southwest flight home with their adopted baby girl, who was just eight days old. Midflight from Colorado to California, Dustin realized the baby needed a diaper change. So, a flight attendant led the couple to a space where they could care for their newborn. Nothing unique there; you would hope that any attendant on any airline would have done such a thing. The flight attendant then complemented the little girl and asked what had prompted a flight with such a young infant. The father told her story, as the mom was changing his daughter. It was a story that included nine years of fertility treatments and miscarriages and adoption stress. Five minutes later, after the couple and their daughter had returned to their seats, another flight attended came on the intercom to make this announcement: “Ladies and gentlemen, there’s a very special guest on our flight today. She’s only eight days old and she’s traveling home with her adoptive parents. So, we’re going to pass out some napkins and pens for anyone who might want to write a message for the new family.” Sixty notes were collected. One of them read, “I was adopted 64 years ago. Thank you for giving this child a loving family to be part of. Congratulations.” Dustin’s mother, the child’s grandmother, took the napkin notes and made them into a book so that couple could preserve the advice and good wishes to their daughter. Little wonder that Southwest Air has ranked as one of the most profitable airlines in the United States over the last decade. And even more, little wonder that other airlines have begun to adopt so many of their practices, which at one time seemed quirky and offbeat, but now, especially in this current climate, just seem to make good sense. What was it that Gary Shandling, the quirky and offbeat comedian, used to say? “Nice guys don’t finish last. Nice guys finish first. And if you don’t know that, then you don’t know where the finish line is.” OK; that approach may not get you into the Baseball Hall of Fame, but it is the only way any of us will expect to make into the Hall of Fame of Faith. For as any baseball fan will tell you, the real purpose of the game is to get around the bases and make it back home, which is, when you think about it, the same purpose to life. If a little kindness toward others will help make that happen, then so much the better. For in the end, not only will we win, so may everyone. By God’s grace in Jesus Christ, so may everyone. Ephesians 4:29-32
“Show Us the Father” JESUS Series Week 3 John 14:6-11 (KJV) 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. 8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us. 9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father? 10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake. Today we are going to look at a discussion that Jesus has with Phillip when they were wanting to know how Jesus was going to solve everything that was wrong in their world. Jesus often spoke of “the Father” because the people with whom He was speaking could not understand how a human being could come from God. So when Jesus in human flesh is referring to the Father – He is talking about the Almighty, Eternal, OmniPresent Spirit that we know is God! That Spirit was what overshadowed Mary, that Spirit is what filled and directed Jesus through life on Earth and that Spirit is the same spirit that we receive when we are filled with the Holy Ghost – and it is that Spirit that will raise us up whether dead or alive to be with Him for eternity! Jesus explains to Phillip – that if you have seen the person of Jesus Christ…You have seen the Eternal Spirit of God because they are one and the same! Like Colossians 2:9 says, 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Jesus had already explained to some Jews in John 10: 30 I and my Father are one. 31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? 33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. 37 If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. 38 But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him. Phillip says – Show us the Father… Jesus says – I already have. The Jews couldn't understand how a MAN could be GOD Jesus said -if I don't do the WORKS of GOD, and you have no evidence or proof that what I am doing is a GOD THING – then don't believe me – BUT… If I do the WORKS OF GOD and you have evidence and proof that what I am doing is A GOD THING – then believe me! Our world wants to see a better way… They want to see GOD…the HOPE beyond this life!… 1 Corinthians 4:14-16 (KJV) 14 I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you. 15 For though ye have ten thousand instructers in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 16 Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me. Keep in mind that what Jesus told Phillip was accurate – when we see Jesus – we are seeing the only image of the invisible God. Colossians 1:15-18 (ESV) 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by[a] him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. We know that GOD IS LOVE – Jesus showed us that…in everything He did and every word He said… He was the visible display of LOVE for all to see! He showed us that God hears and answers prayers – in the many times He healed, delivered, raised from the dead…and even in the delays or seeming denials…He heard and answered! In one of the parables Jesus spoke He SHOWED us the FATHER and the LOVE OF THE FATHER…it is usually called the Parable of the Prodigal Son (also known as the parable of the Two Brothers, Lost Son, Loving Father, or of the Forgiving Father). I think of it as the parable of the Prodigal (Extravagant) Father! We spend lots of time and energy discussing the relevance of the brothers..and their actions and reactions – but the focus the whole time is THE FATHER! Jesus was showing the LOVE of the GOD through this illustration of the EXTRAVAGANT (Prodigal) FATHER! I believe Jesus was showing us that GOD loves all of us…and wants all of us to be with HIM in the house…but even though His Love for us is EXTRAVAGANT – ultimately…we CHOOSE whether or not we will be “in the house”! The parable of the two sons (another parable Jesus tells that directly mentions a father) – has much the same message. One son eventually does the will of his father, the other just claims to…but never does! GOD GIVES ALL OF US THE OPPORTUNITY – IT ALL COMES DOWN TO OUR CHOICE! Our World is in desperate need right now. They need to SEE GOD in us! They don't even understand their need for us to SHOW THEM THE FATHER! We need someone to step up and give clear direction for children and families in this time that we live in. It's kind of like our society is saying, SHOW US THE FATHER – and we will be ok! Church, that is exactly what our world needs. Not someone to be a champion for social justice, not an insurgent or protest rally leader, not a political figure… This world needs us to SHOW THEM THE FATHER! They need to see God! We cannot fix them or what is broken. We can only show them GOD! The choice they make about Him is up to them..but we have to be Jesus to this world. GOD is LOVE, and that is what our world needs like never before! Not just Love, but GOD'S LOVE! When we show God's Love – we are showing them the Father! How can we show God's Love this week? By praying for them to return to the Father By going out of our way to show love and kindness Being careful about what we say and post… In being there when they are ready to talk/pray. Treating everyone the same way…without prejudice Welcoming them with joy and excitement when they return Have you made your choice today? Do you want a Barabbas Life or a Jesus Life? Today if you will turn from sin, and turn to God – you will receive the peace that only Jesus can give you! If you will be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ – all the sins and mistakes of your past will be washed away never to be held against you again. God will fill you with His Spirit and you will have peace that passes any human understanding. The choice is yours today. Will you get caught up in all the chaos, tension and trouble – or will you choose peace in your life – by choosing GOD!

What are you trying to lead yourself? Where do you need to need to loosen your grip and just give it over to Jesus? Where have you crossed the line with sin, and you know that you need to confess, you need to repent, and you need to turn once again to Jesus Christ?" But it’s wonderful when you know you’ve received Jesus Christ - You know have been redeemed from the penalty of sin. And you are assured that eternity awaits. Until then know this: God sees and hears. Your wonderful life has begun in him.
Rapp Report Daily 0439 Does Everyone Have an Opportunity to Repent? Does everybody have an opportunity to repent and put their faith in Jesus Christ? You sometimes hear this argument worded as if someone in a tribal Village in Africa does not know who Jesus is and therefore, they do not have an opportunity to believe in Christ. However, what we see in Romans chapter 1 is that everybody knows God. Everybody knows God exists. So they are without excuse. So we have to recognize is yes, everybody has an opportunity to repent and trust in Jesus Christ. Because they know God. Even the atheist, well, they are actually in a professing atheist, because they actually know according to Romans 1 that God exists, but they suppress that truth in unrighteousness. God has not only given us creation to realize He exists. He has not only given us a God-consciousness so we know that He exists. But He has given us a conscience so that we know right from wrong and no one we do wrong, we are out of favor with Him and must get right. So yes, every time we sin we feel that guilt and that is an opportunity of the Holy Spirit working on us to bring us to repentance but some resist and some do not. Scripture:Philippians 3:8 - Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain ChristTranscript:And now, Admonition, brought to you by the Collierville Church of Christ. We read in Paul's letter to the church at Philippi. Yet indeed. I also count all things lost for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus, my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish that I may gain Christ.Paul emphasizes as he sits in a Roman prison that he has lost everything he had in a physical sense. All of his possessions are gone. He's in prison. But he'd give it all up again. He counts it as rubbish. He counts it as nothing... Having obtained Christ. What would you pay for the excellence of the knowledge of Jesus Christ? You might have to give everything. Would you give it?For more from the Collierville Church of Christ? Paul’s appeals to a Christian Leader: • Be bold in the faith (1:6,7) • Be strong in Christ’s grace (2:1) • Join in suffering for the gospel (1:8; 2:2) • Avoid meaningless arguments (2:14,16) • Separate from false teachers (2:21) • Flee evil / Purse righteousness (2:22) • Be kind and teach those who oppose you (2:24-25) Chapter 3 provides a contrast between an unbelieving world and a believer. The contrast is stark. The world is overcome by evil. They walk in it and are ruined by it. The believer escapes evil’s corruption. He/she walks in goodness and is rescued by the Lord Jesus Christ from ruin. [Slide 3] 2 Timothy 3:10-13 [Slide 4] Two Paths in Contrast The life of wickedness • Narcissistic, materialistic, proud, arrogant, abusive, rebellious, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, unrestrained, brutal, opposed to goodness, treacherous, reckless, conceited, loving pleasure rather than God (2-5) The life of the Christian • Following Christ’s teaching, conduct, purpose and faith; patience, persecution, and suffering; and, ultimately, rescued by the Lord (10-11) Paul then goes on to encourage Timothy about two major influences in his life that have built Timothy up and prepared him to endure in his faith. [Slide 5] 2 Timothy 3:14-15 [Slide 6] 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Paul’s aim is to encourage Timothy to be bold and endure in his faith and calling. Continue in what you have learned and believed • [Slide 7] Think of the people who to taught you o Timothy was raised in the faith by his mother and grandmother. o He also had other men and women who were faithful to teach him not only the gospel but assured of its truth. o “Continue” means to “hold to” or “remain” in what he learned. o Not just to believe the gospel, but to live in what he learned. o We should find strength to endure in our faith when we remember faithful men and women who invested time in teaching us. o People we respect, people whose lives we look up to because of their faith, because their lives are fruitful because of Christ’s work in them. o Write a note of thanks, make a phone call, say a word of thanks. • Think of the Scriptures that instruct you o Make you wise for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ You learn of God’s plan to redeem you in the Bible. You see it foreshadowed in the OT sacrifices, structures, narratives, and prophecies You read about it in the gospels. And you learn of it changing lives in Acts and the epistles o Teaching As truth o Rebuking Exposing wrong & pointing to what’s right o Correcting Restoring to a right state o Training in righteousness Christian discipline for a holy life o Equipped for good work Qualified and prepared for God’s calling The Christian life is hard. We find strength in people who have taught us – formally and people whose lives have been an example for us, maybe didn’t even know. Thank them. Thank our children and youth teachers. They are pouring the strength and power of the gospel into people’s lives. We find strength for the Christian life in the Scriptures. The Bible is God’s word, so it is useful in our lives. It teaches us what is truth. It teaches us how to be saved, restored, redeemed. It trains us for holy lives and equips us for God’s calling.
Scripture: Psalm 51:1-5Speaker: Rev. Gus Christo-BakerWe all have sinned. We all make mistakes. We all have regrets. Scripture tells us that God understands—He sent His son into the world not to condemn the world, but to save the world. Why not go to God right now and accept His wonderful gift of forgiveness through Jesus Christ? You have nothing to lose and an eternity to gain!
Everyone wants to leave a legacy. But the only way to make an eternal impact is to bring someone else into God’s family. Did you know that, if you’re a Christian, you are an ambassador of Jesus Christ? You may think you’re not qualified to do this, because you don’t have the right personality or you lack certain character traits. In this message, Pastor Rick Warren shares five things to give you confidence and six things you can do this week to share your hope with others.

** SHARING IS CARING ** What’s the point of having knowledge and not sharing it or deploying it into action in the world? Too often we are quick to judge, critique, belittle, think less of and whatever other analogy of the sort you want to throw in there people for “being dumb” for not having the same knowledge in something that we may have. But yet won’t take the time to educate, correct or teach that person and help them level up! You get out of life what you put in! You sow good seeds you get good fruit. You sow bad seeds you get bad fruit. "Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back. ”" - Luke 6:38 (Jesus talking to his disciples and people from judea, Jerusalem, tyre and Sidon that came to be healed and cured) It is our god given duty to grow people! And be kingdom examples daily by beating the best us through god so that we may bring the best out of others! "All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had." - Acts of the Apostles 4:32 (one of the stories in acts about the believers of Jesus Christ) You’ve heard the quote, “you only know what you know”, and that can’t be any more true. People shouldn’t be punished for something they’ve never learned of, been through, been taught, experienced and so on. “Ignorance is bliss” so if it’s a point where they had the chance to gain knowledge and purposely ignored and avoided to say they didn’t know then it’s on them. But if they are truly ignorant (unknowing) to something and we don’t educate them it’s on us. "Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but one who hates correction is stupid." - Proverbs 12:1 Knowledge is wealth. There is nothing more valuable to have in this world than knowledge. "Choose my instruction rather than silver, and knowledge rather than pure gold." - Proverbs 8:10 "If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?" - 1 John 3:17 (apostle John wrote in a letter to people) People shouldn’t be scared to seek knowledge. Or help. Or guidance in life. But folks are so prideful and so selfish to the point where people legitly FEAR asking for help in any kind of way. And will keep an “ill do it on my own” mindset that it hinders them in the long run and they feel like they are running forward but in reality they are doing the running man!!! "If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking." - James 1:5 (James wrote in a letter to the 12 tribes) No one should ever be scared to ask for help of any kind. As brothers and sisters on this earth we need to be there for our family. If we have juice to give them we need to pour some into the cup. There’s enough for all thirsty people that will drink what you give them to not be thirsty anymore. Let’s do good by our people. And break bread with those that are willing to eat a piece!! God won’t forget what you have done to help his people. Never have and never will. “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.” Hebrews 6:10 ( to the Jewish Christians)

And then He gave us a spirit that has a conscience, a God awareness; that has the same 5 senses as the body and that help us live in relationship with the spirit realms - both demonic and heavenly. That is why God put the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the midst of the Garden. God never intended for the human race to know good and evil. REFLECTION QUOTES “For me the most mysterious thing about the universe is that it is knowable at all.” ~Neil deGrasse Tyson, American astrophysicist “This non-event, this thing that nobody noticed except his friends and family turned out to have the power to transform the entire Roman Empire and the course of human history more profoundly than any other single event over the past 2,000 years.” ~Henry Louis Gates Jr., author, filmmaker and Harvard professor, speaking of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ “You gain strength and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' …You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” ~Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962), American politician, diplomat, and activist “What cannot be cured must be endured.” ~Charlton Heston (1923-2005), famed actor, at his diagnosis of Alzheimer's “Beware of babies in business suits. Often, churched people…position themselves as mature believers ready to lead. I would wait to make that call until you see it demonstrated in faithfulness. They may…talk a big game, but when the rubber hits the road, they still want the church…to become ‘First Vending Machine Fellowship Church.' You can tell a true servant by how he or she responds when they get treated like one.” ~Marcus Toussaint “You are as much serving God in looking after your own children, and training them up in God's fear…and making your household a church for God, as you would be if you had been called to lead an army to battle for the Lord of hosts.” ~C.H. Spurgeon (1834-1892), famed London preacher “We can only learn to love by loving.” ~Iris Murdoch (1919-1999), Irish-born author and philosopher SERMON PASSAGE Genesis 17:1-5, 15-22 & 18:1-15 (NASB) Genesis 17 1Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless. 2“I will establish My covenant between Me and you, And I will multiply you exceedingly.” 3 Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying, 4“As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, And you will be the father of a multitude of nations. 5“No longer shall your name be called Abram, But your name shall be Abraham; For I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. 15 Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. 16 I will bless her, and indeed I will give you a son by her. Then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.” 17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Will a child be born to a man one hundred years old? And will Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” 18 And Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before You!” 19 But God said, “No, but Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. 20 As for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I will bless him, and will make him fruitful and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. 21 But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this season next year.” 22 When He finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham. Genesis 18 1 Now the Lord appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, while he was sitting at the tent door in the heat of the day. 2 When he lifted up his eyes and looked, behold, three men were standing opposite him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth, 3 and said, “My Lord, if now I have found favor in Your sight, please do not pass Your servant by. 4 Please let a little water be brought and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree; 5 and I will bring a piece of bread, that you may refresh yourselves; after that you may go on, since you have visited your servant.” And they said, “So do, as you have said.” 6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Quickly, prepare three measures of fine flour, knead it and make bread cakes.” 7 Abraham also ran to the herd, and took a tender and choice calf and gave it to the servant, and he hurried to prepare it. 8 He took curds and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and placed it before them; and he was standing by them under the tree as they ate. 9 Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “There, in the tent.” 10 He said, “I will surely return to you at this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door, which was behind him. 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; Sarah was past childbearing. 12 Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I have become old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?” 13 And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, when I am so old?' 14 Is anything too difficult for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” 15 Sarah denied it however, saying, “I did not laugh”; for she was afraid. And He said, “No, but you did laugh.”
