pWotD Episode 2745: 2020 United States presidential election Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 3,943,922 views on Wednesday, 6 November 2024 our article of the day is 2020 United States presidential election. The 2020 United States presidential election was the 59th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. The Democratic ticket of former vice president Joe Biden and the junior U. S. senator from California Kamala Harris defeated the incumbent Republican president Donald Trump, and vice president Mike Pence. The election took place against the backdrop of the global COVID-19 pandemic and related recession. The election saw the highest voter turnout by percentage since 1900. Biden received more than 81 million votes, the most votes ever cast for a candidate in a U. S. presidential election. In a competitive primary that featured the most candidates for any political party in the modern era of American politics, Biden secured the Democratic presidential nomination. Biden's running mate, Harris, became the first African-American, first Asian-American, and third female vice presidential nominee on a major party ticket. Trump secured re-nomination, getting a total of 2,549 delegates, one of the most in presidential primary history, in the Republican primaries. Jo Jorgensen secured the Libertarian presidential nomination with Spike Cohen as her running mate, and Howie Hawkins secured the Green presidential nomination with Angela Nicole Walker as his running mate. The central issues of the election included the public health and economic impacts of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic; civil unrest in reaction to the police murder of George Floyd and others; the Supreme Court following the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett; and the future of the Affordable Care Act. Due to the ongoing pandemic, a record number of ballots were cast early and by mail. Thirty-eight states had over half of all votes cast using these methods, and only three states had fewer than 25%.Many more registered Democrats voted by mail than registered Republicans. As a result of a large number of mail-in ballots, some swing states saw delays in vote counting and reporting; this led to major news outlets delaying their projection of Biden and Harris as the president-elect and vice president-elect until the morning of November 7. Major media networks project a state for a candidate once there is high statistical confidence that the outstanding vote would be unlikely to prevent the projected winner from ultimately winning that state.Biden received the majority in the Electoral College with 306 electoral votes, while Trump received 232. Trump was the first president to lose re-election since George H. W. Bush in 1992. Key to Biden's victory were his wins in the Democratic-leaning Rust Belt states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, which Trump narrowly carried in 2016 and whose combined 46 electoral votes were enough to swing the election to either candidate. Biden also became the first Democrat to win a presidential election in Georgia since 1992 and in Arizona since 1996, as well as Nebraska's 2nd congressional district since 2008.Before, during, and after Election Day, Trump and numerous other Republicans engaged in an aggressive and unprecedented attempt to subvert the election and overturn the results, falsely alleging widespread voter fraud and trying to influence the vote-counting process in swing states in what has been described as an attempted self-coup d'état. Attorney General William Barr and officials in each of the 50 states found no evidence of fraud (widespread or otherwise) or irregularities in the election. Federal agencies overseeing election security said it was the most secure in American history. The Trump campaign and its allies, including Republican members of Congress, continued to attempt to overturn the results of the election by filing numerous lawsuits in several states (most of which were withdrawn or dismissed), spreading conspiracy theories alleging fraud, pressuring Republican state election officials (including, notably, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, in a phone call that later became widely publicized) and legislators to change results, pressuring the Department of Justice to declare the election "corrupt" and intervene, objecting to the Electoral College certification in Congress, and refusing to cooperate with the presidential transition of Biden. With Trump vowing that he would never concede the election and after exhorting his followers to "fight like hell", a mob of Trump supporters attacked the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, during the joint session of Congress held to certify the Electoral College count. On January 7, Trump acknowledged the incoming administration without mentioning Biden's name. Biden and Harris were inaugurated on January 20, 2021; in a break from tradition, Trump did not attend his successor's inauguration. Trump was indicted on August 1, 2023, on four counts relating to conspiring to overturn the results. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:12 UTC on Thursday, 7 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 2020 United States presidential election on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Russell.

I voted on Halloween which is a tradition of mine because the Democratic and Republican candidates frighten me. In 2020 I interviewed Green Party presidential candidate Howie Hawkins and Libertarian presidential candidate Jo Jorgensen and found them to both be smart, capable and having more good ideas and solutions to the country's problems than the 2 party system offered then and now. Please vote and consider voting 3rd party. Now more than ever we need more choices and voices. Mark interviewed Green Party presidential candidate Howie Hawkins and they had an interesting discussion about ballot access for third parties, how Howie was the first candidate to propose a Green New Deal, what he would do to fight the Covid pandemic and how he feels Trump and BIden have let us down in this crisis. He has a plan to eliminate fossil fuels in 10 years, cut military spending and get troops out of the middle east, have Medicare for All and lays out the similarities and differences between himself and Bernie Sanders. Whether you agree or disagree with him, he has a substantive and different point of view which is worth a listen and voting consideration. Mark got to interview Libertarian candidate for President Jo Jorgensen and asked her tough questions about health care, the coronavirus, climate change, foreign policy, abortion and more. Dr. Jorgensen being a former teacher rapped Mark across the knuckles a couple of time and presented an alternative to the 2 party system as well as a sense of humor.

The Cryptocurrency Informer
The US Political Election – What Role Does Crypto Play?

The Cryptocurrency Informer

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 6, 2020 5:40

Today's episode will cover events happening the week ending November 6th, 2020. This week has been quite intense, from a US political perspective! If you are an American, or follow American politics, you know that this week has been the US Presidential Election – and one of the most nail-biting ones at that. Big things are happening in the world of crypto as well. Namely the price of BTC is absolutely skyrocketing. Are these two events connected? Let's find out! More Information @ Talk.Bitcoin.Tax Full Show Notes: (00:37) The big story this week isn't (exactly) crypto related, but is too big to ignore on this week's episode. The United States is currently in the midst of a presidential election, and it's certainly been one to remember. As of recording, the fate of the election hinges on four states: Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Nevada – all four states that the former Vice President Joe Biden currently has a lead in. It seems as though the writing is on the wall – it's very likely that Joe Biden will become the next President of the United States. So, how does this relate to cryptocurrency? Of course, neither Biden nor Trump included any type of cryptocurrency related issue in their presidential platform. Libertarian candidate Jo Jorgensen discussed her admiration for Bitcoin, but it wasn't a part of her platform either. Cryptocurrency is more and more becoming mainstream, but it's not at that point yet…unfortunately. The only democratic candidate that mentioned cryptocurrency during the primary elections was Andrew Yang. However, with mainstream adoption continuing at its current rapid pace, we are likely to see an intersection between politics and cryptocurrency sooner than later. (01:32) There are a few notable ways we can link this election cycle and crypto/blockchain. A number of Senate seats are up for grabs in this election, and some of those senators have either a cryptocurrency related past, or are actively involved in shaping crypto and blockchain related legislation. GOP Senator Kelly Loeffler, for example – is the former CEO of the crypto exchange Bakkt. Her involvement with cryptocurrency is undeniable, but her time in Congress has yielded zero actual legislation or even mention of crypto. Coindesk has a great extensive list of all of the current Senate and House races involving candidates with some sort of cryptocurrency or blockchain relation, so be sure to check that out if you are interested. Some of these candidates are pro-crypto and blockchain while some could be considered anti-crypto and blockchain – realistically though, the majority of these politicians probably don't know a ton about the world of crypto. (02:31) The next way we can link this election discussion to cryptocurrency is the discussion of utilizing blockchain technology to vote. Realistically, any type of widespread implementation of this is a long way away – however, there are certainly proponents of it, and those proponents are using this point in history to make their voices heard. That's primarily because this election had a record number of mail-in ballots due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic – those mail in ballots have proven to take an increasingly long time to count. Of course, in such a big election, this delay has put many on both sides of the isle on edge. Gemini co-founder Tyler Winklevoss said on Twitter “The technology and cryptography exists to allow us all to vote online in a fraud-proof manner. We could all know the outcome instantly and w/ mathematical certainty. Yet voting entails paper ballot & requires in person or snail mail casting. It's as if the Internet doesn't exist.” Cointelegraph reports that “Binance's chief executive Changpeng Zhao or CZ and Ethereum's co-founder Vitalik Buterin are in furious agreement that a new blockchain-based voting system is required to improve democratic processes in the United States.” Of course, any advocate for crypto and blockchain adoption would want to see these great technologies utilized to replace a fairly antiquated process – but how realistic is it? Are these vocal advocates letting their love of the technology get in the way of logic? Is the hype real? It is certainly a worthy discussion to have, but that deep dive is out of the realm of today's episode. However, it's important to be realistic – let's listen to cryptographic experts and cyber security experts before we ascribe blockchain to be the savior of modern-day voting. (04:07) Finally, it can't be ignored that during this election, BTC is absolutely skyrocketing in price. In the beginning of October, Bitcoin was around $10,500. At the beginning of November, Bitcoin was around $13,800. As of recording, Bitcoin is a bit over $15,500 – and had briefly come close to hitting $16,000 earlier in the day. So, is this excellent spike related to the US election? It's tough to pin down any direct evidence indicating these two things are related, but typically large national or global events play a role in the rise and fall of assets like Bitcoin. Right now, Dow Jones, Nasdaq, and the S&P 500 are all doing well. It's a bit strange that a time of political turmoil yields positive returns for all of the aforementioned asset classes, including Bitcoin, but the proof is clearly there. As most of us in the space know, Bitcoin was famously at its peak in December of 2017 – it hit almost $20,000 per Bitcoin. That rise brought a whole new group of users, investors, businesses, and overall hype into the space. It seems like most of us in this space are hoping that Bitcoin performs even better come December 2020 – and if it does, we may see a whole new wave of people joining the space. --- That's it for this week's episode of The Cryptocurrency Informer. With the election today, I thought it would be good to share a discussion I had with Sean Boston where we talked about our election thoughts and much more. We talked about ACB, Libertarianism, and our secularizing culture. Furthermore, we were able to agree and disagree, while having a lively discussion. Plus, it helps that Sean is a very funny guy, and much sharper than he gives himself credit for. A day without laughter is a day wasted. -Charlie Chaplin Final Election Thoughts I wanted to be sure to get this episode out before the election was over. Mainly, I was hoping to be able to get my thoughts and predictions out there before it happens. This quote from Benjamin Netanyahu sums up my thoughts on what will likely happen with Trump pretty well. And, this is how I evaluate what's going on around me in politics to make a decision. "I always lose the election in the polls, and I always win it on election day." -Benjamin Netanyahu Plus we dove into more than just Election Thoughts Also, we discuss much more than just our thoughts on the election and potential outcomes. We looked at what it means to be a "real libertarian," if there even is such a thing. Moreover, we talked about the woes of the Libertarian party, and my misgivings about Jo Jorgensen. Next, we dove into our thoughts on the nomination (that hadn't happened at the time) for Amy Coney Barrett. We talked about the secularization of our society and some of the fallout we expect to see. And, we discussed much more as well. If you enjoy, funny and insightful conversations, I think you'll get a lot out of this one. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/conofourgen/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/conofourgen/support

I would hope that the American people would look past my gender and just look at the ideas. I want to see freedom in my lifetime. I want to see people be able to make their own decisions. -Jo Jorgensen Meet Dr. Jo Jorgensen, Libertarian candidate for President of the United States. In Boston as part of her whirlwind tour across America, Jo agreed to an exclusive interview with me. Born in Libertyville, Illinois, and raised in a nearby town with only one stop light, Jo had a libertarian mindset before she knew anything about the Libertarian Party. A graduate of Baylor University, Jo went on to Southern Methodist University for her MBA and earned her PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Clemson University in 2002 where she is now a senior lecturer. The VP running mate for Harry Brown in the 1996 presidential campaign, Jo believes that “our government is too big, too bossy, too nosy and too intrusive. It's time to put the decision making power back into the hands of the people.” In this interview, she explains what it means to be Libertarian, and answers my questions about key issues like: how to heal unrest in our country, what she would have done if she were president during the Coronavirus outbreak, her views on our criminal justice system, the police, her stance on decriminalizing drugs, healthcare, our military, prayer in schools, the IRS, the FDA, no-knock raids, and whether to send teachers and children back into the classroom. But it is Jo's heartfelt answers about gender, motherhood, how she gets around obstacles, and her view on what success really means that give the listener a clear view of the contents of her character. With her supporters repurposing #imwithher Jo's hope is that as a third party candidate, she will be able to debate President Trump and former Vice President Biden on a national stage so that voters can understand what she truly stands for. #letherspeak #letherdebate #JoJorgensen2020
