Listening back to it now, it's hard to believe that Bad Religion's seventh studio album - 1993s 'Recipe For Hate' - was at the time considered a polarizing record that many hardcore fans felt was a sell-out. 30 years later, it's clear this was a band at the top of their game - maturing and expanding musically while still delivering ferociously intelligent songs about class, religion and navigating a treacherous path towards the 21st century. Our guest, personal trainer and Taekwon-Do Studio owner Aaron Fruitstone, makes the case that their brand of cerebral punk is as presciently valid now as it was when he was an angry teen. "Well madness reigned and paradise drowned When Babel's walls came crashing down Now the echoes roar for a story writ That was hardly understood And never any good." Songs featured in this episode: Recipe For Hate (Live Hollywood Palladium, 2004) - Bad Religion; Strike First - Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson; No Control, Only Entertainment - Bad Religion; White Riot - The Clash; Commando - Ramones; Recipe For Hate, Kerosene - Bad Religion; Vigil Smile - Claw Hammer; American Jesus - Bad Religion; Porch - Pearl Jam; Portrait Of Authority - Bad Religion; House Of Wolves - My Chemical Romance; Wichita - Karen Landau and Greg Leisz; Man With A Mission, All Good Soldiers, Watch It Die - Bad Religion; Still In Hollywood - Concrete Blonde; Struck A Nerve - Bad Religion; Harder Than You Think - Public Enemy; My Poor Friend Me - Bad Religion; Growing Up - Fall Out Boy; Lookin' In - Bad Religion; Kids Of The Black Hole - Adolescents; Don't Pray On Me - Bad Religion; Sorrow - Greg Graffin (Live acoustic); Modern Day Catastrophists, Skyscraper, Stealth, Skyscraper (Piano version) - Bad Religion

Illustration by Meredith Schomburg In episode two of Bent By Nature, co-producer Bob Carlson explores the life of influential and enigmatic DJ Deirdre O'Donoghue behind the mic. Born in New York City and DJing across the country before landing at KCRW to host "SNAP!", O'Donoghue didn't talk much about her past or private life — even in the face of personal demons, and eventually, her deteriorating health. But O'Donoghue's fierce passion for music manifested in close friendships with those who came through her studio and beyond, from artists like Michael Stipe and Julian Cope, to record store owners, to young station volunteers she nurtured and mentored. Even amidst a kind of self-appointed solitude, O'Donoghue devoted herself to those she chose to let in, coming to the aid of artists in dire straits and offering solace within her record-filled apartment alongside a cup of tea and her cherished pet birds. Her presence could, and did, change lives. Here, some of O'Donoghue's closest friends, including Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano, Tricia Halloran, and the late Pat Fish of Jazz Butcher, reflect on O'Donoghue's life away from the studio and the many stories they shared.
Concrete Blonde, Johnette Napolitano, and James Mankey.
Will Crewdson presents Scant Regard, a solo one-man whirlwind of pure unadulterated guitar driven energy. Also known for his guitar work with Adam Ant, The Selecter, Johnette Napolitano, Rachel Stamp and Flesh for Lulu. He shares his music story and the Warner Bro's deal that altered his carrier. We also dive into creativity, his process and the power of finding a "creative way" that works for you! While gettin' jiggy in my home studio in Wilmington, North Carolina, I'm reminiscing about the Wilds of Wyoming and a band to be reckoned with, Patti Fiasco. I first heard the Fiasco outdoors, lots of hay and a forest and barn-burning guitar riffs and then, they moved a few blocks over to Jill Hunter's rip-roaring Lander Bar, where they thoroughly lit the town on fire. I told them about a little place called Aspen and now, they're coming. Enjoy a vintage Sonic Byways and kindred sounds from Johnette Napolitano, just in time for Patti Fiasco's Aspen debut. As of press time, the band is still on fire.
"Hipsters, Flipsters and Finger Poppin' Daddies.....knock me your lobes..."This weeks episode is the harbinger of what's comin' down the pike, brothers and sisters..It's almost like Frank Zappa was a friggin' prophet! ... to some he was. From 1966's FREAK OUT! "Trouble comin' everyday....and while on the subject Young Jessie is a piece of work, don't you think?..."Don't think I will" indeed. Not to be outdone Joe McCoy and the Harlem Hamfats sing an ode to Memphis Minnie: "Hoodooin' Woman". Jersey City's Black Hollies lay down a garage groove for Johnette Napolitano to bare her soul with the uber-cool "True to this".....Before all you cats get your shorts in a knot I'm thinkin' Sister Johnette isn't playin' on our team.....if you get my drift....dig?Speakin' of diggin....Bo Diddley shovels out a dirty beat via "The Twister" before Bill Wyman produced The End puts the last nail in the requiem as the DRR Show sets its sites for the finish line. And it's a photofinish between pop star Nino Ferrer and the longshot JJ Jackson...That's all for this week...stay smooth and don't forget to tell someone about the Podcast...you'll get bonus points on Judgement Day.
LA's Concrete Blonde were fresh off an ill-fated tour with Cyndi Lauper when they careened into SNAP in April 1987. They serve up a characteristically paint-peeling performance punctuated by grade-A banter between Deirdre and frontwoman Johnette Napolitano.
