Episode 170: In Conversation With Will Crewdson (Scant Regard, Adam Ant, et al) Brian and Sarah recently had the honor and pleasure of meeting the great Will Crewdson in person at an Adam Ant concert. During that encounter, the three agreed to set up a time to meet and talk some more. This episode is the result! Will Crewdson is a talented, prolific, and extremely busy guitarist who has lent his formidable skills to a number of well-known acts, including Adam Ant, Flesh For Lulu, The Selecter, Gaye Bykers on Acid, and Sigue Sigue Sputnik, to name just a few. He was also a founding member of the indie band Rachel Stamp, and he currently works with ex-Rachel Stamp band member Shaheena Dax under the name She Made Me Do It (SHEMMDI for short), and as a solo artist under the name Scant Regard. Brian and Sarah had a fun and enlightening conversation with Will about a number of topics, such as his musical background, performing and touring with Adam Ant, his solo project Scant Regard, and a cool story about working with someone that Brian (perhaps surprisingly) was super-excited about! Additionally, Will shares an exclusive tour update—an upcoming solo date on the East Coast! Tales of the Road
Gregory Crewdson's photographs have entered the American visual lexicon, taking their place alongside the paintings of Edward Hopper and the films of Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch as indelible evocations of a silent psychological interzone between the everyday and the uncanny. Often working with a large team, Crewdson typically plans each image with meticulous attention to detail, orchestrating light, color, and production design to conjure dreamlike scenes infused with mystery and suspense. While the small-town settings of many of Crewdson's images are broadly familiar, he is careful to avoid signifiers of identifiable sites and moments, establishing a world outside time.Born in Brooklyn, New York, Crewdson is a graduate of SUNY Purchase and the Yale University School of Art, where he is now director of graduate studies in photography. He lives and works in New York and Massachusetts. In a career spanning more than three decades, he has produced a succession of widely acclaimed bodies of work, from Natural Wonder (1992–97) to Cathedral of the Pines (2013–14). Beneath the Roses (2003–08), a series of pictures that took nearly ten years to complete—and which employed a crew of more than one hundred people—was the subject of the 2012 feature documentary Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters, by Ben Shapiro.Crewdson's emblematic series Twilight (1998–2002) ushers the viewer into a nocturnal arena of alienation and desire that is at once forbidding and darkly magnetic. In these lush photographs, the elements intervene unexpectedly and alarmingly into suburban domestic space. Crewdson's psychological realism is tempered in these images by their heightened theatricality, while themes of memory and imagination, the banal and the fantastic, function in concert with a narrative of pain and redemption that runs through American history and its picturing.Cathedral of the Pines, which was first exhibited at Gagosian in New York in 2016, depicts unnamed figures situated in the forests around the town of Becket, Massachusetts. In scenes that evoke nineteenth-century American and European history paintings, the works' subjects appear traumatized by mysterious events or suspended in a fugue state. Working with a small crew to maintain an intimate and immediate atmosphere, the artist also used people close to him as models. But even once we know who “plays” the protagonists, their actions remain cryptic and their relationships unclear. “There are no answers here,” states the artist, “only questions.” The 2018–19 series An Eclipse of Moths is set amid down-at-heel postindustrial locations including an abandoned factory and a disused taxi depot. They serve as backdrops for Crewdson's enigmatic dramas of decay and potential rebirth.Gregory's most recent body of work, Eveningside (2021-2022), was shot in B&W and formed the centrepiece of a retrospective trilogy of work, alongside Cathedral of the Pines and An Eclipse of Moths, in a major exhibition at Galerie D'Italia in Turin from October 2022 until January 2023. A older series called Fireflies (1996) was also included as ‘both connective tissue and counterpoint…'. A book, also entitled Eveningside, was published to accompany the show. On episode 198, Gregory discusses, among other things:The three phases of his creative processWhy he chose B&W for EveningsideHis transition from film to digitalThe abiding themes in his workHow every artist has one story to tellFalling in love with photography from day oneHis love of moviesThe significance of nudity in his workAllowing for ‘a certain kind of unexpected beauty and mystery' to come out of the processWindowsNever being quite satisfied with the resultsThe relationship between true beauty and sadnessThe act of making a picture being an act of seperation from the worldThe way in which the subjects of his work always seem disconnected and alone…And how that references the act of making the picture.ReferencedThe Night of the HunterThe Last Picture ShowMankRomaRick SandsLaurie Simmonds Gallery | Instagram“I've said many times, I feel like every artist has one story to tell and that central story is told through an artists lifetime, and when you come of age in your early twenties you're confronted with movies and artwork that you love or you hate and you're defined in a certain way as a kind of aesthetic being, and then you spend your life sort of working out those things, and trying to find yourself within that frame of influences.”
In a recent interview with Mixmag Asia about her debut EP 'Young Hate' and its just-released lead single 'Stonefruit', Sijya laid down the following as her artistic agenda: "It's a bit rebellious I'd say. I think it fights the notion that there are certain ‘correct' paths to reaching a certain level of knowledge or making." Carrying out that rebellion against the run-of-the-mill on the back of an intuition-led meticulousness, the New Delhi composer, producer and visual artist has begun to unveil her abstract take on art-pop and downtempo with the single release, which she marks for us with her Wild City mix. The penchant for doing things differently pervades the curation and mixing as she uses the selections to celebrate Accidental Records, the home of her debut EP. Forgoing the commonplace approach of building things up gradually, the mix kicks off with a near-abrupt heavy rhythmic onslaught to firmly demand attention before finally clearing into captivating simplicity to provide a moment of sublime rhythmic relief with Dominic Voz's 'Right To The City I'. Sampled components of different tracks on the mix are re-arranged like a musical collage to manoeuvre through drastic dips and climbs of energy levels, as Sijya ventures into heavily distorted grounds and back while showcasing the uniqueness of her labelmates with works from the likes of Micachu, Crewdson, Mica Levi and ultimately, label-boss and British musical royalty, Matthew Herbert. We talk to Will Crewdson - Guitarist for the bands Rachel Stamp, Scant Regard and She Made Me Do It along with legendary music icon Adam Ant. At eleven years old, the young Will Crewdson would excitedly get to see his hero Adam Ant performing live on stage, yet little did he know that a couple of decades later he would be sharing the very same stage with the music pioneer as his guitarist and touring the world. Along the way, Will's journey would see him tackle London's undergorund music scene with Glam Punk renegades Rachel Stamp, being mistaken by Chris Evans as The Spice Girls and even visiting the Playboy Mansion. This episode is brought to you by our friends Dead Skull Coffee.https://deadskullcoffee.co.uk/discount/STVPlease visit The Straight To Video Patreon Page to find out how you can help grow this show. https://www.patreon.com/stvpod

Clementine accepts Shadow into her life. Dodson shares his discovery with Crewdson. There are only a handful of photographers whose work is instantly recognizable and fewer still who have become a genre unto themselves. I was first introduced to the pictures of Gregory Crewdson through a body of work called Beneath the Roses. I felt instantly connected to that world he so meticulously crafted and I've been a huge admirer of his work ever since. In 2016, I had the opportunity to sit down with Gregory for a conversation about his body of work called Cathedral of the Pines. It was a terrific experience for me, not just because Gregory is one of my favorite photographers, but because it provided a glimpse behind the curtain to a photographic world that I find both moving and familiar. In 2018, Gregory began making photographs for his newest body of work. An Eclipse of Moths continues his exploration of themes like brokenness and isolation as well as a profound connection to light and the encroachment of the natural world. To some that world may seem bleak, especially on first glance — but a deeper look will reveal a narrative that is hopeful and rich with possibility. As we sat down to talk about An Eclipse of Moths, I began by asking him about the geography he revisits again and again and whether his pictures could be made anywhere else or is the place he now calls home a necessary part of his expression as an artist. Welcome Nerdlings! Today's episode is a dark one. This is part two and our final part in the series exploring the murders of three young girls who were brutally raped and murdered in the woods of Oklahoma during a girl scout retreat back on June 13th 1977. Maybe one day we will be able to do a Part 3 if there is ever any resolution to this yet unsolved case. Citations: Camp Scott. (2020, April 12). Welcome Nerdlings! Today's episode is a dark one. This is part one of our two part series exploring the murders of three young girls who were brutally raped and murdered in the woods of Oklahoma during a girl scout retreat back on June 13th 1977. This is still an unsolved case so we wanted to make sure to give the case it's full dues as it's a heartbreaking one so we decided the best way to do that would be to have this as a two parter. We wanted to make time to discuss who each girl was and show just how heinous this crime was/is. We will release Part two next Sunday 10/18/20. Citations: Camp Scott. (2020, April 12). Gregory Crewdson is a photographer who was born in Brooklyn, New York. He is a graduate of SUNY Purchase and the Yale University School of Art, where he is now director of graduate studies in photography. He lives and works in New York and Massachusetts. In a career spanning more than three decades, he has produced a succession of widely acclaimed bodies of work, from Natural Wonder (1992–97) to Cathedral of the Pines (2013–14). Beneath the Roses (2003–08), a series of pictures that took nearly ten years to complete—and which employed a crew of more than one hundred people—was the subject of the 2012 feature documentary Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters, by Ben Shapiro. The 2018–19 series An Eclipse of Moths is set amid down-at-heel postindustrial locations including an abandoned factory and a disused taxi depot. They serve as backdrops for Crewdson’s enigmatic dramas of decay and potential rebirth. A survey of Crewdson’s work of the previous twenty years toured European museums from 2005 to 2008. The exhibition In a Lonely Place traveled to galleries and museums across Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, and New Zealand from 2011 to 2013, and a major monograph was published by Rizzoli in 2013. Crewdson’s awards include the Skowhegan Medal for Photography, a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship, and the Aaron Siskind Foundation Fellowship. He is represented by Gagosian Gallery worldwide and by White Cube Gallery in London. S&V is sponsored by Golden Artist Colors.

We're back! Thank you all so much for listening, and for your kind feedback. Its really encouraging to see so much engagement and I'm looking forward to sharing some more meaningful conversations with you in the future. In part two of my discussion with Critical Care Paramedic Scott Hardy, we spoke about the management of foreign body airway obstruction, airway management in trauma patients, out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, and paramedic intubation. Scott is such a knowledgeable practitioner and it was great to hear his thoughts on the nuances of these topics. I hope you find this episode useful. Photo Kibitz | Chatting about Photography, Photographers and their Images
What is a photograph? Beyond the halides and pixels which are either exposed or sprayed onto a sheet of paper, have you ever paused for a moment to wonder what is a photograph? Artist, teacher and student Michael Schreier is my guest on this episode of Photo Kibitz. Michael is a former Director of Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa. His work is collected in both public and private institutions, like the National Gallery of Canada, the National Archives and the Canadian Portrait Gallery, to name a few. We spent quite a bit of time chatting about his own work, how he got into photography and his interpretation of what a photograph is.
