On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are just trying to survive another terrible day at school. We watched the 2014 film from Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott, Cooties. We all remember elementary school, right? Droning lessons, playground politics, and of course, the thing that has surely defined those years for everyone: turning into a bloodthirsty zombie and eating all the adults we can find.Ah, those were the salad days. The days when we could spend eight hours stuck in what felt like a prison. Our eyes would watch the slow seconds tick away on the clock. Our mouths would hunger for the blood of our prey.We took over the world then. We made everything we saw into our own. We laughed, we bonded, we gruesomely tore apart everyone who was older than we were. The days were delightful. The brains were delicious.(Recorded on February 07, 2024)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:Cooties - The Movie Database (TMDB)Cooties trailer - YouTubeLord of War (2005) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Elijah Wood — The Movie Database (TMDB)Rainn Wilson — The Movie Database (TMDB)Alison Pill — The Movie Database (TMDB)Jack McBrayer — The Movie Database (TMDB)Nasim Pedrad — The Movie Database (TMDB)Leigh Whannell — The Movie Database (TMDB)Train to Busan (2016) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Mist (2007) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Mist - This Is Why You Should Never Go Outside | More Movies Please! - BuzzsproutMark Christopher Lawrence — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Invisible Man (2020) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Invisible Man | More Movies Please! - BuzzsproutThe Office (TV Series 2005–2013) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Black Friday (2021) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Black Friday - Things Can't Get Any Worse | More Movies Please! - BuzzsproutFollow Us:Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts!Sean's Letterboxd profile!Steven's Letterboxd profile! Our Buzzsprout site! Our Instagram profile!Support the Show.
Not gonna lie, writing these episode descriptions feels like homework... So that's perfect for this month's theme: Hack to School! Grab your class schedule and meet up with your old buds to find out what they did on summer vacation. We are starting off the month with Home Economics. The big takeaway, do not make chicken nuggets like they do in Cooties from 2014. The film was directed by the team of Jonathan Milott & Cary Murnion, who did Bushwick and Becky. The film was written by Leigh Whannell of Insidious, Saw, and The Invisible Man fame, alongside Ian Brennan, who is like the guy for the show Glee... apparently, I've still never watched it. Both play incredibly memorable, perhaps the best, characters in the film. Produced by Elijah Wood's company, Spectrevision, which was originally called The Woodshed. There's a useless piece of trivia from my notes that I did not babble on air. The film stars Wood, who almost blocked Rainn Wilson's "hobbit" line, but left it in as any good executive producer would. The film also features Allison Pitt, who was in Goon, and in the making of featurette for the film, references Sidney Crosby. Kinda cool, again forgot to mention it on air. Speaking of all these damned actors, we take a creative jaunt and recast the actors from Return of the Living Dead into this film. Find out who we picked and why. Does anyone actually read these? Kevin James is best known for sitcom television shows. He played the “king of queens” and many other roles getting laughs out of audiences everywhere. But what happens when he plays a role that is not necessarily in his wheelhouse. What if he plays a murderer? A skinhead? A criminal and con? And sure enough, that film has arrived. BECKY, a 2020 gruesome thriller, presents him as a character that no one has ever seen him play before. Widower Jeff (Joel McHale) and young daughter, Becky (Lulu Wilson), head out to their lake home. Becky is surprised that her father's girlfriend and son are there and that he's planning to get married to her. Still not over her mother's passing, she storms off to her forest fort to cool down. While there, a group of criminals barge into the lake house. They take everyone hostage and demand a lost key that they had hid on the property years earlier. Crazy violent, BECKY changes tone from a psychological thriller to a gruesome revenge movie. From a script written by Nick Morris, Lane Skye, and Ruckus Skye, the film was directed by co-directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion. With so many fingers in the pot so-to-speak, does the film turn into a hodge-podge mess or hold up as an engrossing horror-thriller. Your co-hosts of Dark Discussions take a look at the film and give their thoughts.
Brothers Drew and Eric discuss the Lulu Wilson, Joel McHale, Kevin James film Becky. They spoil it, as always, but the movie is worth hearing about whether or not the genre is your cup of tea. Along the way they discuss Joel McHale’s schtick, The Cabin with Bert Kreischer, umbilical cords, and Drawing Flies. Housekeeping starts at 49:05 during which they discuss Torn Curtain, Topaz, Murder Among the Mormons, Tenet, real Netflix discs, and jury duty. To cap off Femme Fatale February, we are slipping a spit-covered pinky finger into your ears in the form of a review of Becky. Yeah, remember that movie that came out in June of last year? I think that was during the "murder hornet" phase of that dumpster fire of a year. So, being realistic, you probably didn't see it. Wanna find out if you should? Why not listen to us ramble about it? The movie stars Lulu Wilson as Becky Hooper. Lulu has been in tons of horror movies, for a kid who is not legally allowed to see them unattended in a theater. Not that anyone would want to go to a disease-ridden theater right now anyway. Her works include Deliver Us from Evil (2014), Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016), Annabelle: Creation (2017), and The Haunting of Hill House (2018). Opposite Lulu, is Kevin James as Dominick. Before this movie, the closest James came to the horror genre was Hotel Transylvania and that time Peter Boyle guested on King of Queens. Joel McHale plays Jeff Hooper, the titular Becky's dad. He was also in Deliver Us from Evil. I guess the closest to horror he would have been aside from that is The Happytime Murders. Meh. Reformed pro-wrestler, Robert Maillet, is Apex. We briefly discuss his in ring career, his gimmicks, and his acting roles which include the films Monster Brawl, Septic Man, and Lexx. The film was directed by the duo of Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion. They previously did Cooties (2014) and Bushwick (2017). We talk about their directing style, homage, and editing choices. We also go into the unique distribution for the film, given the ongoing pandemic. If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com. Films discussed: Becky (VOD) and Shirley (VOD) Becky. 13 year old with a bit of a vengeance streak going- and she is doing quite well. Lulu Wilson is Becky. Kevin James as the villain- Dominick. Very much against type and he nails it. Extremely violent film. A guy cuts his eyeball out as it is dangling from his head. Be warned. We liked it. Didn't love it. Shirley. What is real and what isn't? It's one of those. Well written and Elizabeth Moss is just awesome as Shirley- A famous horror writer who finds inspiration for a new book when a young couple moves in with her and her husband. An Incredibly slow burn. One of us really liked it, the other two did not. Tune in to find out why. Intro, Chris and Roger haze Grayson as per usual. Chris's legs hurt and why- You never skip leg day. Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion met while working on animation projects. They created a short film in the horror-comedy genre (called ‘Boob’) that was accepted at SXSW. Thanks to this film, Elijah Wood’s company called to see if the duo wanted to pitch about a project called ‘Cooties.’ Thanks to their perseverance, they eventually landed the job (more on this in the interview). For their latest project, ‘Becky’ is about a teenager's (Lulu Wilson) weekend at a lake house with her father takes a turn for the worse when a group of convicts wreaks havoc on their lives.” In this interview, the Directors talk about pace and character, what makes a good horror comedy, how to enhance the premise, how they divide up responsibilities as a Directing duo, and how Joel McHale and Kevin James came on board for ‘Becky.’ If you enjoyed this interview, join millions of viewers for the new YouTube video essay series, Creative Principles, which dissects new films, series, and more: bit.ly/2FARJz5

Jonathan and Matt are, like the rest of you, in isolation at the moment. Safely ensconced in their own homes across the Atlantic, they decided it was time to do a miniseries of films that feel a little too relatable right now. Not to make light of the scary situation we all currently find ourselves in the midst of, but rather to make this time of contemplation a little more enjoyable. The guys as that you seek out the films or, in some cases, you avoid them and then listen to our mini-sodes.

It's been awhile since I took the crossover approach for an episode, allowing it to exist for both Director's Club & Voices and Visions. Since my guests today are both tremendously talented filmmakers with a lot of insights, stories and new projects to promote, I decided to include this in both feeds. After my introduction to the proceedings, I first speak with writer/director Jonathan Milott who alongside collaborator Cary Murnion have recently made a film called BUSHWICK that couldn't be more timely. We delve into exactly why that is as well as the history between this team who is also responsible for the indie horror/comedy COOTIES. P.S They're not brothers. At around the 40 minute mark, I then speak with someone I've known for quite awhile since she also happens to be the wife of one of my closest friends and former guests, Mr. Dan Solomon. Katherine Craft is an established writer in many forms with a lot of success stories, both as an activist and as a creative artist. Her latest endeavor involves HBO (yes that HBO) so we discuss the experience surrounding that as well as her IndieGoGo campaign for her personal project CHARLOTTE AND CHARLIE, which I hope you'll contribute to. Both interviews provide a lot of great commentary on the art of directing, writing, within the film and theater industries, so I am positive you'll get a lot of these talks. And be sure to follow the work of Katherine linked below! This week, No Film School producer Jon Fusco sits down with Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion, co-directors of Bushwick, a film that premiered in Sundance’s Midnight Section. The premise for a Neo-Civil War film in America may have seemed insane a decade ago when Millot and Murnion first came up with it; now, it doesn’t seem so far-fetched. Brittany Snow plays Lucy, a student on her way home to Bushwick while on break from grad school. She gets off the subway only to realize that her Brooklyn neighborhood is under siege from an unknown enemy. Later on in the film, it is revealed that Texas and a handful of other states have seceded from the union and are the force behind the attack. With the help of Stupe, a former marine played by Dave Bautista, they attempt to fight their way through the city to safety. For Millot and Murnion, the road to making Bushwick was paved by a ton of hard work and self-education. Neither went to film school, but through a series of successful short film competitions, they were able to capture the eye of a producer at SXSW. That led to a directing gig on the 2014 horror/comedy Cooties. In this podcast, they discuss the steps they took to win that film and how their process of making a movie evolved once they had one in the can.
