Not gonna lie, writing these episode descriptions feels like homework... So that's perfect for this month's theme: Hack to School! Grab your class schedule and meet up with your old buds to find out what they did on summer vacation. We are starting off the month with Home Economics. The big takeaway, do not make chicken nuggets like they do in Cooties from 2014. The film was directed by the team of Jonathan Milott & Cary Murnion, who did Bushwick and Becky. The film was written by Leigh Whannell of Insidious, Saw, and The Invisible Man fame, alongside Ian Brennan, who is like the guy for the show Glee... apparently, I've still never watched it. Both play incredibly memorable, perhaps the best, characters in the film. Produced by Elijah Wood's company, Spectrevision, which was originally called The Woodshed. There's a useless piece of trivia from my notes that I did not babble on air. The film stars Wood, who almost blocked Rainn Wilson's "hobbit" line, but left it in as any good executive producer would. The film also features Allison Pitt, who was in Goon, and in the making of featurette for the film, references Sidney Crosby. Kinda cool, again forgot to mention it on air. Kevin James is best known for sitcom television shows.  He played the “king of queens” and many other roles getting laughs out of audiences everywhere.  But what happens when he plays a role that is not necessarily in his wheelhouse.  What if he plays a murderer?  A skinhead?  A criminal and con?  And sure enough, that film has arrived.  BECKY, a 2020 gruesome thriller, presents him as a character that no one has ever seen him play before. Widower Jeff (Joel McHale) and young daughter, Becky (Lulu Wilson), head out to their lake home.  Becky is surprised that her father's girlfriend and son are there and that he's planning to get married to her.  Still not over her mother's passing, she storms off to her forest fort to cool down.  While there, a group of criminals barge into the lake house.  They take everyone hostage and demand a lost key that they had hid on the property years earlier.  Crazy violent, BECKY changes tone from a psychological thriller to a gruesome revenge movie.  From a script written by Nick Morris, Lane Skye, and Ruckus Skye, the film was directed by co-directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion.  With so many fingers in the pot so-to-speak, does the film turn into a hodge-podge mess or hold up as an engrossing horror-thriller.  Your co-hosts of Dark Discussions take a look at the film and give their thoughts.

To cap off Femme Fatale February, we are slipping a spit-covered pinky finger into your ears in the form of a review of Becky. Yeah, remember that movie that came out in June of last year? I think that was during the "murder hornet" phase of that dumpster fire of a year. So, being realistic, you probably didn't see it. Wanna find out if you should? Why not listen to us ramble about it? The movie stars Lulu Wilson as Becky Hooper. Lulu has been in tons of horror movies, for a kid who is not legally allowed to see them unattended in a theater. Not that anyone would want to go to a disease-ridden theater right now anyway. Her works include Deliver Us from Evil (2014), Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016), Annabelle: Creation (2017), and The Haunting of Hill House (2018). Opposite Lulu, is Kevin James as Dominick. Before this movie, the closest James came to the horror genre was Hotel Transylvania and that time Peter Boyle guested on King of Queens. Joel McHale plays Jeff Hooper, the titular Becky's dad. He was also in Deliver Us from Evil. I guess the closest to horror he would have been aside from that is The Happytime Murders. Meh. Reformed pro-wrestler, Robert Maillet, is Apex. We briefly discuss his in ring career, his gimmicks, and his acting roles which include the films Monster Brawl, Septic Man, and Lexx. The film was directed by the duo of Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion. They previously did Cooties (2014) and Bushwick (2017). We talk about their directing style, homage, and editing choices. Ob der King of Queens-Star Kevin James als knallharter Ex-Knacki überzeugen kann, hört ihr bei uns im Becky Podcast. Doug und Becky, Doug und Becky, Doug und…Nachdem wir mit Maniac in der letzten Folge von Filmtoast Fokus genau 40 Jahre in die Vergangenheit gereist sind, widmen wir uns mit Becky einem brandaktuellen Film aus 2020. Wir, das sind in diesem Fall Patrick und sein Gast Timo. Beide recht stark im Genre verhaftet und beide, mehr oder minder, mit King of Queens aufgewachsen. Die Fallhöhe, Kevin James nicht als liebenswerten Lieferfahrer Doug Heffernan sondern als knallharten Nazi und Ex-Knacki Dominick ernstnehmen zu können, war also dementsprechend hoch. Inwieweit diese Transformation gelungen ist beantworten die beiden ausführlich im Becky Podcast. Becky allein zu HausMan kann nur schwer von der Hand weisen, dass bei Becky dezente Kevin allein zu Haus-Vibes mitschwingen. Schließlich muss sich die von Lulu Wilson (Annabelle 2, Spuk in Hill House, Ouija: Ursprung des Bösen) gespielte Dreizehnjährige gegen vier (fast) skrupellose Schwerverbrecher durchsetzen. Und das zelebriert das Regie-Duo Jonathan Milott & Cary Murnion mit einer (un-)gesunden Portion Härte und literweise Kunstblut. Reicht dieser Fakt, um die Gore-Hounds und Genre-Aficionados jubelnd und wunschlos zurück zu lassen? Auch dieser Frage widmen wir uns ausführlich im Becky Podcast. Was gibt es sonst noch?Natürlich gibt es auch die ein oder andere Anekdote zum Film, die es sich zu erzählen lohnt. Beispielsweise war Kevin James nicht die Erstbesetzung für den gewissenlosen Nazi Dominick. Zudem gilt es im Becky Podcast zu diskutieren, inwieweit sich der Film mit seinem sehr offensichtlichen MacGuffin ein Bein stellt oder sich damit vielleicht doch eine Spur interessanter macht. Originally scheduled to have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2020, but postponed due the Covid-19 pandemic, Becky found its release on VOD and select drive-in theatres in June 2020 in certain territories. Here in Australia, we have just gotten Becky’s theatrical release. Directed by Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion, Becky is the action thriller film described as Home Alone meets Saw. Spunky and rebellious Becky (Lulu Wilson) tries to reconnect with her father (Joel McHale) during a weekend getaway at a lakefront house. But the trip soon takes a turn for the worse when convicts on the run, led by the merciless Dominick (Kevin James), suddenly invade the home.

For many years, Jeremy Taggart was the drummer in one of Canada's most well-known rock bands Our Lady Peace. Now, he is part of Canada's next great double act Taggart & Torrens. They are releasing their first comedy album Bahds on Friday. Jonathan Milott & Cary Murnion have now directed three films together. Their latest is the horror-thriller Becky, starring Lulu Wilson, Joel McHale, and Kevin James, and tells the story of 13 year-old girl who seeks revenge on a gang of neo-nazis who kidnaps family. Today on The Neil Haley Show, The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Christian Navarro of 13 REASONS WHY. Christian Navarro's star is on the rise and he is quickly becoming one of the most highly sought after actors in Hollywood. He stars as the sensitive yet Steve McQueen cool ‘Tony' on the critically acclaimed Netflix series 13 REASONS WHY. The first season of the show immediately captivated audiences and paved the way for a second season, which will premiere this spring. This episode of The Harold & Maudecast's Now Streaming, Marvel The Defenders and BUSHWICK reviews. Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) team up to stop mysterious and powerful bad guy org, The Hand, from destroying New York in Marvel's The Defenders. Marvel sure knows how to build universes and market them really well. The individual series of each character masterfully set up the convergence of all their worlds in The Defenders. That's about the only impressive thing about this series. The writing is incredibly weak, the acting is uneven and there is very little super hero action for a super hero show. Some cool action packed sequences and a few stand out performances from veteran actor Scott Glenn as Stick, Daredevil's mentor and Charlie Cox as Daredevil saved this from a DOOM rating, barely. 5.8/10 When a Texas military force invades the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick, grad student, Lucy (Brittany Snow) and former marine Stupe (Dave Bautista) must depend on each other to survive. Dave Bautista proves himself worthy of dramatic acting gigs in BUSHWICK. The film directed by Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott (COOTIES) and written by Nick Damici and Graham Reznick (STAKE LAND), is thrilling and provocative survival story. The story starts out with a literal bang and wastes no time unveiling the plot, which was refreshing. Brittany Snow (PITCH PERFECT) does a nice job with an abrupt character arc as her damsel in distress quickly adapts. The story loses steam about midway through the film when unnecessary and clichéd characters are introduced. The ending is exactly what you'd expect from a film festival darling -- a bummer. On this week’s show, host Gersh Kuntzman said he will pull no punches when it comes to Nazis, plus a talk with filmmakers Cary Murnion and Jon Milott, whose new film, “Bushwick,” eerily centers on a white supremacist takeover of the hipster neighborhood.

This week, No Film School producer Jon Fusco sits down with Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion, co-directors of Bushwick, a film that premiered in Sundance’s Midnight Section. The premise for a Neo-Civil War film in America may have seemed insane a decade ago when Millot and Murnion first came up with it; now, it doesn’t seem so far-fetched. Brittany Snow plays Lucy, a student on her way home to Bushwick while on break from grad school. She gets off the subway only to realize that her Brooklyn neighborhood is under siege from an unknown enemy. Later on in the film, it is revealed that Texas and a handful of other states have seceded from the union and are the force behind the attack. With the help of Stupe, a former marine played by Dave Bautista, they attempt to fight their way through the city to safety. For Millot and Murnion, the road to making Bushwick was paved by a ton of hard work and self-education. Neither went to film school, but through a series of successful short film competitions, they were able to capture the eye of a producer at SXSW. That led to a directing gig on the 2014 horror/comedy Cooties. In this podcast, they discuss the steps they took to win that film and how their process of making a movie evolved once they had one in the can.
