United States v. Joseph M. Thomas
Joseph M. Thompson is assistant professor of history at Mississippi State University, and the author of Cold War Country: How Nashville's Music Row and the Pentagon Created the Sound of American Patriotism (UNC Press, 2024). Thompson's history tracks the deep connections between country music and the U.S. military, uncovering a concerted effort by government officials and cultural creators to cement country culture and national pride (and of course, anti-communism). Our conversation moves from Slim Pickens to Toby Keith, as we explore how the cultural politics of country continue to shape the 21st century. Bright on Buddhism - Asian Religions Series - Shintō Part 2 Hello and welcome to the Asian religions series. In this series, we will be discussing religious traditions in Asia other than Buddhism. Buddhism never existed in a vacuum, and as it has spread all across East Asia, it has developed, localized, and syncretized with local traditions in fascinating and significant ways. As such, we cannot provide a complete picture of East Asian without discussing those local traditions such as they were and are. Disclaimer: this series is very basic and introductory, and does not and cannot paint a complete picture of these religious traditions as they are in the present or throughout history. Today, we will be discussing Shintō, a very historically and culturally significant religious tradition in Japan. We hope you enjoy Resources: Azegami, Naoki (2012). Translated by Mark Teeuwen. Country music maintains a special, decades-long relationship to American military life, but these ties didn't just happen. This readable history reveals how country music's Nashville-based business leaders on Music Row created partnerships with the Pentagon to sell their audiences on military service while selling the music to service members. Beginning in the 1950s, the military flooded armed forces airwaves with the music, hosted tour dates at bases around the world, and drew on artists from Johnny Cash to Lee Greenwood to support recruitment programs. Over the last half of the twentieth century, the close connections between the Defense Department and Music Row gave an economic boost to the white-dominated sounds of country while marginalizing Black artists and fueling divisions over the meaning of patriotism. This story is filled with familiar stars like Roy Acuff, Elvis Presley, and George Strait, as well as lesser-known figures: industry executives who worked the halls of Congress, country artists who dissented from the stereotypically patriotic trappings of the genre, and more. In Cold War Country: How Nashville's Music Row and the Pentagon Created the Sound of American Patriotism (UNC Press, 2024), Joseph M. Thompson argues convincingly that the relationship between Music Row and the Pentagon helped shape not only the evolution of popular music but also race relations, partisanship, and images of the United States abroad. ChristiTutionalist Politics Joseph M. Lenard You can't help but see the division of the United States happening right before our very eyes. Right versus left. Democrat versus Republican. Black versus White versus Hispanic versus Asian. It's in the news every day. It's happening in the streets every night. It's dividing households and families. It's creating havoc in work places and it's tearing the very fabric of our democracy apart at the seams. So, the question is: “What do we do about it?” This nation was founded on the Judeo-Christian standards of morality and law. Our Constitution was formed and ratified to keep the power in the hands of the people. Not through a majority vote, but through a representative government. But now, we see that the so called “leaders” of this land, at all levels of government, are not there to represent the people, per se… but to line their own pockets at the expense of the people. Jesus famously said, “If a nation is divided against itself, it will not stand.” Abraham Lincoln said that “All the armies of Europe and Asia could not, by force, take a drink of water from the Ohio River or make a track on the Blue Ridge mountains. But if destruction be our lot, we ourselves will be its author and finisher. As a nation of free men, we will live forever or die by suicide.” I believe this nation is standing in the middle of the town square, right now, via our political and ideological differences, with the pistol at our temples and playing “Russian Roulette.” Unless someone intervenes and brings some sense back to the population as a whole, this nation will soon surrender to the Chinese first and then to the Russians as we are divided up for their taking… But, to help spur this country forward, one man is coining a phrase that will soon be heard around the country. That phrase is “ChristiTutionalist.” Amen! (CHRIST eh Tutionalist). You've heard of “Constitutionalist” – just say, CHRIST as the first part and “Tutionalist” as the last part. Amen! Joseph M. Lenard has been on our program before. He's and author and speaker and political activist and has been involved in politics up in Michigan since 1978. He's the author of “Terror Strikes: Coming Soon to a City Near You,” as well as his most recent book, “ChristiTutionalist Politics: Christian Based Constitutionalism.” Help me welcome to the program, Joseph M. Lenard. Joseph, it is so good to have you back on the program, brother! Talk to us a minute about the reason WHY you decided to write “ChristiTutionalist Politics” right now, at this point in time? Who is the intended audience for this book? You have a saying, “Principles Not Personalities.” Explain that for us… Can you share with us the view of “The Separation of Church and State” that is always being floated around these days by those who don't believe in Biblical values – and the true meaning of that statement? Ronald Reagan called this nation, “A shining city on a hill.” I'd say that the light has gone out or has faded a great deal. What can revive this country to its...
To lead into the next season of Enduring Interest, we're re-releasing our first two seasons, covering totalitarianism and ideology and liberal education. We'll be back on September 8 with a new season covering free speech and censorship. In this episode we discuss a short essay by the philosopher Henry Bugbee, “Education and the Style of our Lives.” Bugbee taught for a number of years at the University of Montana. This short, beautiful and thought-provoking essay was occasioned by a report that a commission presented to the Montana legislature. In just over nine pages, Bugbee lays out the core of education as seen from the standpoint of both teacher and student. He seeks the revitalization of a dialogue that brings text and world together—experience is illuminated and meaning is discovered. The piece was published in Profiles, the magazine of the University of Montana in May of 1974. Our guest is Joseph M. Keegin. Joseph talks about Bugbee's insistence that both teacher and student must be capable of self-risk. We discuss Bugbee's reflections on the relationship between liberal learning and experience and how Bugbee's appeal to experience is quite different from the way people appeal to “lived experience” today. We end by thinking about Bugbee's appeal to the duty to bring the past to bear on the present. Joseph makes a plea for people to find a copy of Bugbee's only published book, The Inward Morning, which is a “philosophical exercise conducted through fifteen months of journal entries.” You can find Joseph's essay on Bugbee here and his blog is www.fxxfy.net. Joseph is an editor at Athwart and The Point, and a PhD student in philosophy at Tulane University. He has also written articles for Plough, First Things, Tablet, and The New Atlantis.

How to Write and Publish a Book Joseph M. Lenard pt 2 http://terrorstrikes.info/ ()If you listened to our interview as we discussed Joseph's book, https://amzn.to/3zasYFP (“Terror Strikes: Coming Soon to a City Near You,”) you heard me ask him to come back on the podcast and discuss the pro's-con's and details of self-publishing. I know many of our listeners have a book inside them and the Lord has put it on your hearts to write that book, but you're not sure of how to go about it. You're not sure of the publishing options. You're not sure if you should hire an editor. You're not sure of a lot of things. Joseph M. Lenard has come back on our program to help you in this area. Today is part two of our great interview on how you can become a published author... How do you approach a publisher? Do you mail out 1000 manuscripts and hope for the best? That's what we've heard for many years… Self-publishing sounds like the best option for new writers just starting out. Do we need a website for our book? Or can our personal website work and we just put a page up referencing the book? What about book signings and things like that for promotions? What is the best way to get these access to book signings? Do you need a publicist? What is the difference between a publicist and a publisher? Now, the most important part, do you become rich by publishing a book? Joseph, this has been a very informative interview! I appreciate you pulling back the curtain and giving our listeners a first-hand look inside the book writing and publishing industry. I want to direct our listeners that may not have heard our interview about your book, https://amzn.to/3zasYFP (“Terror Strikes: Coming Soon to a City Near You,”) to use the link below to order your book and to use the links to listen to your interview where we discussed your book in detail. If someone wanted to reach out to you, to ask a question or maybe do an interview such as this, how can they do that? How can someone get in touch with you? You're not sure if you should hire an editor. You're not sure of a lot of things. Joseph, thank you for taking the time to come back on and share this valuable information with our listeners today. I appreciate your time. First up, let's discuss writing the book, then we can get into the publishing aspect. We see movies and such where a writer goes off to a mountain cabin for six months or a year as a recluse and re-emerges with a best-selling novel. Or they go on a cruise for six months and come back with a book. Is that realistic and is that what you did? Do you do one chapter per day? One page per day? Is there a set amount? What about character development? In your book, https://amzn.to/3zasYFP (“Terror Strikes,”) your character is Martin, a Detroit newspaper reporter. How long did it take for you to develop that character? Is there a set writing style for different genres? Fiction, religion, novels, etc.? Tell us about your writing style and how it came about and how you developed it… So you write your chapters and finally, it's finished. Or is it? Once you have the first draft completed, do you turn it over to an editor or do you begin to self-edit first? Can't we just set it aside for a couple of days or weeks and then go back and edit ourself again? How many edits do you usually go through before deciding to turn it over to someone else? At what point do you begin to look for a publisher? What are the different publishing options? Folks, that book the Lord has put on your heart is closer than you may realize. Terror Strikes Joseph M. Lenard pt 2 http://terrorstrikes.info/ ()Ever since 911, terrorism has been on the minds of Americans, off and on but never consistently. Proof, let just say, “Oklahoma City Bombing” and, for those old enough to remember, it just sparked a memory. Or “Waco Massacre” and you can visualize the live newscasts. There are others. Since COVID started, there has not been much coverage of “terrorism” or “terrorist threats.” It seems as if the media grew tired of covering these things and would much rather dwell on lockdowns and things like that. Many Americans also feel as if this nation is somehow immune to major attacks. But that is not the case. Not at all. To help illustrate that point and to bring this awareness to the forefront again, my guest today has written a book titled, https://amzn.to/3zasYFP (“Terror Strikes: Coming Soon to a City Near You.”) Joseph M. Lenard a Christian author with a very non-traditional Christian book, published by Illumify Media. Joseph hails from Michigan (which is where I was born and raised) and has been involved in Michigan politics and activism since 1978. Today is part two of a great two part interview! How does social media contribute to the spread of terrorism? You discuss something about Hell in your book. But it's not the “hell” that most people are thinking of. I laugh at this because I know what you are about to tell us. But go ahead and pop this one on our listeners… In Michigan, we have a great comeback for when people tell us to “Go to hell.” We just say, "I've been there and they kicked me out. What's your excuse?” Or, “Been there and got the T-shirt.” Because that's what we do. Amen! As we get ready to close, I just have to ask you this. Growing up in Michigan, everyone plays hockey. I don't know about anymore, but back when we were growing up, that was how it was. You have a great story about one of the greatest hockey players ever, #9 on the Detroit Red Wings, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordie_Howe (Gordie Howe.) Can you tell us about that? Joseph, this has been all so interesting. How can someone obtain a copy of your bookhttps://amzn.to/3zasYFP (, “Terror Strikes: Coming Soon to a City Near You?”) Is it on Amazon? If someone wanted to get more information, maybe to ask a question or possibly do an interview such as this, how can they get in touch with you? Folks, as Joseph Lenard has stated, terrorism has not gone away just because the COVID virus shut things down. The news just took it off the headlines. The problem is still there. They are still coming for us. You need to get your own copy of Joseph Lenards book, https://amzn.to/3zasYFP (“Terror Strikes: Coming Soon to a City Near You.”) Go down into the show notes and get your copy today. The first question I always ask is, other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Joseph M. Lenard?” You're from Wyandotte, Michigan. I know right where that is at. I'm from Marysville, just up the coast of the thumb about 50 miles, just south of Port Huron. You've written other books in the past. What makes this book so special and why did you believe this is the right time to release https://amzn.to/3zasYFP (“Terror Strikes?”) Your book is not just about terrorism, is it? With “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness,” basically, this is a book for any red blooded American that still loves this country, correct? You mentioned the media has shied away from covering anything related to terrorist activity in the United States. Why do you believe they are not covering this anymore? Do you believe it has something to do with what we see happening (or not happening) down at our southern border with Mexico? And the politics involved with that? You state there was one recent exception to that lack of coverage. Tell us about that one instance (and then what happened)… Who is the target audience that you wrote this book for? You discuss the Torah, the Koran and the Bible in your book, correct? How do you present these three different views in your book? What does the term “GIJIAS” mean in your book? (Global Islamic Jihadists Interim Army Soldiers). You say that this is a “book within a book.” Can you explain what that means and how it was used in your book, https://amzn.to/3zasYFP (“Terror Strikes?”) In your research for the book, who did you discover is mainly financing these terrorist activities?
