How Should One Wrap the Tefillin Strap—And Is There a Required Number of Coils or a Specific Direction?

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

The Halacha below was derived from multiple classes orated by Rabbi Eli Mansour in the Bekiim B'Halacha series. Click on any of the dates below to hear the original audio files, which are the sources for today's Halacha below. 04/10/25 ; 04/21/25 ; 04/23/25 ; 05/11/25 How Should One Wrap the Tefillin Strap—And Is There a Required Number of Coils or a Specific Direction? After securing the Tefillin Shel Yad (the arm Tefillin) onto the bicep, one wraps the strap around the forearm in a particular pattern. This wrapping is not merely aesthetic—it is deeply rooted in Halacha, custom, and Kabbalistic meaning. How many coils are required? In which direction should one wrap? And what happens if one is in a rush or interrupted? What Is the Source for Wrapping the Strap Around the Arm? The Torah says, "Ukeshartam le'ot al yadecha"—"You shall bind them as a sign on your arm." The word "ukeshartam" implies binding, not just placing. Therefore, it is not enough to put the Bayit of the Tefillin Shel Yad on the bicep—one must also wrap the strap around the forearm to fulfill the Misva of binding. This is part of the Tefillin ritual itself, and not an optional step. How Many Times Must the Strap Be Wrapped? According to Sephardic custom, the strap is wrapped eight times around the forearm—between the Bayit on the bicep and the wrist. These eight coils correspond to spiritual and symbolic concepts, including the eight days leading to Berit Milah and the transcendence beyond nature. This number is rooted in the Kabbalistic teachings of the Arizal, and accepted as standard practice by Maran, the Ben Ish Hai, and Hacham Ovadia Yosef. Ashkenazim, however, often wrap the strap seven times, based on different understandings of the required act of "binding." Both customs are valid, and each person should follow their community's tradition. Is the Wrapping a Requirement or Just a Custom? The act of wrapping is a requirement, based on the Torah's word "Ukeshartam." However, the specific number of wraps (e.g., seven or eight) is a matter of custom and not me'akev—it does not invalidate the Misva if one wraps fewer or more times. That said, one should not treat this lightly. The number eight (for Sephardim) or seven (for Ashkenazim) carries deep significance, and by following the traditional count, one aligns with the spiritual energy intended by our sages. If someone accidentally wrapped fewer or more times, or if one of the coils slipped, the Misva is still valid. But it is best to adjust it as soon as possible and aim to wrap correctly the next time. Which Direction Should the Strap Be Wrapped? For Sephardim, the strap is wrapped inward, meaning that the coils go from the outer edge of the arm toward the body, forming a clockwise spiral when looking down the arm. This direction is based on the writings of the Ben Ish Hai, Arizal, and is codified in Yalkut Yosef. It symbolizes drawing the sanctity of the Tefillin inward, binding it to the soul. Some Ashkenazic authorities permit wrapping outward (counter-clockwise), and many Chassidic groups follow that custom. Each person should continue with their family or communal minhag. What Happens If One Wrapped in the Wrong Direction? The direction of the wrapping is not essential to the validity of the Misva. If a person wrapped in the wrong direction—out of habit, error, or imitation—the Tefillin are still kosher, and the blessing does not need to be repeated. However, one should try to correct the practice moving forward, especially if one has been educated or reminded of the proper custom for their community. Is There a Problem with Gaps or Overlaps in the Coils? Ideally, the wraps should be evenly spaced, firm but not tight, and placed one under the other in descending order. Overlapping or very loose coils are discouraged but do not invalidate the Misva. If one is rushed, or if the strap is very long or short, one may wrap looser or more tightly as needed. The main thing is to ensure that the strap forms clear, distinct coils down the forearm. Can the Strap Be Wrapped Over Clothing or a Watch? No. The strap must be wrapped directly on the skin of the forearm. Wrapping over a sleeve, wristwatch, or bandage creates a Hatssitsa (barrier), which may invalidate the Misva. Before wrapping, one should remove any watch or bracelet and ensure the skin is clean. If a person has a wound or bandage and cannot wrap fully, they should wrap to the extent possible on uncovered skin. When Is the Wrapping Performed in the Tefillin Sequence? After placing the Tefillin Shel Yad on the bicep and tightening it, the person recites the Beracha of "Le'hani'ah Tefillin." Then, without interruption, the strap is wrapped around the forearm. The wrapping around the fingers and hand comes after the Tefillin Shel Rosh is placed and secured. This later wrapping is more symbolic and poetic, reflecting verses of commitment to Hashem. But the forearm wrapping is part of the main Misva, and must be done immediately after the Beracha, without speaking or delay. Summary - Wrapping the strap around the forearm is part of the Torah commandment to "bind" Tefillin. - Sephardim wrap eight times; Ashkenazim often wrap seven. - The specific number and direction are not me'akev, but follow strong custom. - Sephardim wrap inward (clockwise), toward the body. - Coils should be neat and on bare skin, not over clothing or watches. - The wrapping must follow the Beracha, without delay or interruption.

TL;DL: The use of SDKs for data collection/sharing has been a common factor in various fines and lawsuits on both sides of the pond. The EDPB sparked an important debate on personal data-powered AI in the EU. Texas and California went after Allstate and Honda respectively. La Liga (ES), Netflix (NL), Meta (IR), and others received fines. The FTC put an end to personal data sales by General Motors. The My Health My Data Act (WA) was put to the test. AI “reasoning” models exploded, and then AI Agents followed. Garante (IT) blocked DeepSeek and a class action in Germany could have a major impact across the EU. Welcome to the first Fintech Recap of 2025. As always, I'm joined by Jason Mikula, publisher of Fintech Business Weekly and author of the shiny new book Banking as a Service (which I'm loving, by the way), as we catch up post-holiday to dive into the fintech buzz. First pit stop: BaaS Island and the CBW Bank saga. This small player with a big history—partnering with pioneers Moven and Ripple—just got slapped with a major $20M penalty from the FDIC. But CBW is fighting back, challenging the FDIC in court. As fintech blurs the line between community banks and fintech giants, can a community bank charter truly handle nationwide payments and high-stakes BaaS?  Next up, get ready for the IPO tidal wave in 2025. It's shaping up to be a big one for fintech, and Chime is at the forefront, gearing up for its big debut. While there's chatter about their customer count—anywhere from 7M to 38M—one thing's undeniable: Chime boasts a solid customer base with impressive direct deposit adoption. Things are about to get interesting. Moving on, Walmart and Branch are in hot water with the CFPB for allegedly opening accounts for Walmart Spark drivers without consent, forcing them to use Branch or risk termination. This raises huge questions about employers embedding financial services in their workers' lives. Not to mention, the urgent need for tighter oversight on employer-sponsored fintech in 2025. Plus, we rant about Vivek Ramaswamy's unhinged tweet blaming the 90s pop culture—like Boy Meets World and Friends reruns—for America's software engineer shortage. Yep, seriously.  It's  Whiplash reruns or nothing for the "Department of Government Efficiency.” Here's looking at you, 2025. 00:04:19 - Return to BaaS Island 00:23:59 - IPO Watch: Chime 00:40:59 - Walmart x Branch 00:56:35 - Can't Let It Go Sign up for Alex's Fintech Takes newsletter for the latest insightful analysis on fintech trends, along with a heaping pile of pop culture references and copious footnotes. If you've considered attending a cruise that relates to your business-you won't want to miss this episode. Learn the ways you can and can't write off a cruise as a business expense. Facebook Group for Tax ProfessionalsFacebook Group for Real Estate Investors [00:00:00] [00:00:00] Welcome to Real Estate is Taxing, where we talk about all things real estate tax, and break down complex concepts into understandable, entertaining tax topics. My name is Natalie Kolodij, I'm your host, and I am so excited that you've decided to join me.[00:00:23] Hello. Hello everyone. And welcome to this week's episode. The past several months, I have attended multiple conferences, tax conferences, real estate conferences, all across the country. Various venues. And it got me thinking about one of my favorite travel business topic. Overlaps. Which is when you can and when you can not. Deduct travel on a cruise ship. [00:00:53] There's a lot of blogs and articles out there, but they're all fairly vague or they give very [00:01:00] generalized steps and don't really talk about the feasibility of it. Or actual examples of it. I spent some time today searching for some court cases related to this topic. And there really aren't any specific to cruise ship travel as its own deduction. [00:01:19] I couldn't find it as a focus point of a case. I did find some court cases that were semi-related we'll chat about one of those at the end. But outside of that, there's not a ton of guidance because it's pretty cut and dry. [00:01:34] [00:01:34] The code section for this hasn't changed since 1982. So there haven't been any big updates or anything that really needed to be contested in recent years. So let's get into it. There are two different ways you can potentially write off a cruise as a business expense. Both of these are covered in code section [00:02:00] 2 74 M and they are split between addressing conventions on cruise ships. And then a secondary category known as luxury water travel. So starting off with conventions on cruise ships. This is something that I hear about pretty often. I think anyone in the tax industry and real estate in a lot of industries, There are multiple cruises per year related to most industries that you can choose to attend. [00:02:33] It will be in most cases, a seven day cruise. They will buy a room block the same way they would for a conference at a hotel or a resort. And then everything takes place on the cruise. There are however many hours of education. There are, different conference related events and networking. [00:02:51] They're renting out general speaking areas. And attendees pay for the room. And the cruise fare, it's all typically rolled [00:03:00] into one price. So these are marketed pretty frequently. And I have most often seen these marketed as a deductible business expense. But the truth of it is very rarely. Is a conference or an educational event on a cruise ship. Going to just easily be deductible. So let's start off with the first. Addressing of this. [00:03:29] So let's look at how the code words, this. In the case of any individual who attends a convention, seminar, or other meeting, which is held on any cruise ship. No deduction shall be allowed under section 1 62 for expenses allocable to such meeting. Unless the taxpayer meets the requirements of paragraph five. And establishes that the meeting is directly related to the active [00:04:00] conduct of his or her trade or business. So code section 1 62. Is the part of the tax code that explains ordinary and necessary business expenses. As a starting point, attending a convention seminar, et cetera, on a cruise ship. Is only a business deduction. If it directly relates to the taxpayers ongoing trader business, that makes sense. Next part. Again, it is directly related to the active conduct of his or her trader business. And that, and then it goes on to list two requirements. Requirement number one, the cruise ship is a vessel that is registered in the United States. And requirement number two. All ports of call of that cruise ship are located in the United States or in possession of the United States. [00:04:53] So when we just start off with looking at these two initial requirements, I will [00:05:00] let you guess how many cruise ships you think fit the bill? If we are looking at large commercial cruise lines. there's a thousand, 2000 people on board, maybe more. It normally is a week long, goes out to a few islands, go somewhere else. But we're not talking about like a river cruise or one of those little boats that'll fit like a hundred to 300 people, But one of those large commercial cruise ships, where there is a buffet and like a kid's club and water slides and all of that. One we're looking at that level of cruise ship. There is one. Singular ship that meets the requirement. Norwegian cruise lines, pride of America based in Hawaii is us registered. And it is the only large commercial cruise lines, cruise ship. That is us registered. Most cruise ships are registered to other countries for a variety of reasons. So just right off the bat, most cruise [00:06:00] ships are not going to meet this requirement. The vast majority of cruises and cruise ships do not check the boxes. To be able to write off a convention or seminar that is held on a cruise ship. If it did, let's say that. Your industry is hosting a cruise that goes to Hawaii on that pride of America cruise ship. So it is us registered and it is only going to the United States. [00:06:28] then there is a $2,000 expense limit. For the total cost of that cruise with that seminar or convention. Total expense CAPTA, $2,000. In addition to that, if you happen to find a cruise that ticks all of the boxes and does qualify. To write off as a convention or an event that is held on a cruise ship. There's a whole bunch of reporting requirements that are required as [00:07:00] well. for the tax year where you're claiming that deduction. You also need to include. A written statement. Signed by the individual attending the meeting. [00:07:10] That includes information about the trip, the total days that excludes the transport to, and from the cruise ship. The number of hours each day of the trip where you devoted to only business activities. You need to include a program or schedule for all of the business activities or meetings. And any other information that might be required by the secretary. [00:07:36] Additionally, you also need to include. A written statement signed by an officer of the organization or group sponsoring the meeting or the conference. And that has to include. A schedule of the business activities for each day, the number of hours, which you attended those business activity. And any other [00:08:00] information as might be required by the secretary. so for the amount that we are fed and marketed cruises that are a tax deduction and attending these seminars on a cruise that are going to be a write off, they're likely not going to be. And in the rare event, they are. They're a huge pain in the ass to include everything you need to on your tax return to claim that deduction. So that's not a very likely option. [00:08:27] It's not my favorite option. But that's what we have for the availability of writing off a convention or a seminar that is specifically held on a cruise ship.[00:08:39] The next option that I think is the far better choice. Is looking at your crews under the definition of luxury...

Both Nancy and Austin are working on the front lines of some of the West's most innovative water and habitat conservation projects– projects that benefit everything from groundwater supplies to wildlife habitat, climate resiliency to ecosystem health. - If you've listened to many of these TNC-focused episodes, then you'll know that TNC works extensively throughout the Colorado River Basin on a wide range of conservation issues that affect people, wildlife, and landscapes. In this episode, we're going to zoom in on one very specific, very simple, and very effective process that has the potential to have massive positive impacts on ecosystem health throughout the West. - The process is called “low-tech process-based restoration,” which is the practice of adding simple, low-cost structures made of natural materials like rocks, wood, and posts to simulate natural processes like beaver dams in streams and wetlands, kick-starting natural cycles of recovery. These structures require minimal permitting, can be built quickly by hand without heavy equipment, use locally sourced materials, and can be installed by local workers who do not need extensive training. The end result creates surprisingly effective outcomes that can be scaled quickly across vast stretches of the West. - We recorded this conversation the day after Colorado River Day, which was a fitting time to highlight such an important project and process. We started out by discussing how this project came to be, which involved a significant amount of funding from the Inflation Reduction Act. We discuss how rivers have historically looked in the West versus how they look now, as well as the ecological complexities of riverscapes and riparian corridors.  We then dig into the details of “low-tech process-based restoration”-- timelines, challenges, opportunities, partnerships, and measuring success. We also talk about beavers, shifting cultural norms around conservation, overlaps between forest and riparian restoration, favorite books, and much more. - As you'll hear, Nancy and Austin provide such an excellent overview of several varieties of low-tech process-based restoration. But for those of you who want to dig deeper into details of the various processes and case studies, they've provided me with extensive additional resources that you can access in the episode notes. I'd also encourage you to check out the short film embedded on the episode's webpage, which will give you a visual overview of the process and its results. - A big thanks to Nancy and Austin for the fun conversation, and thank you for listening. --- Nancy Smith Austin Rempel Riparian Restoration short film Full episode notes and links: https://mountainandprairie.com/nancy-austin/ --- This episode is brought to you in partnership with the Colorado chapter of The Nature Conservancy and TNC chapters throughout the Western United States. On the last Tuesday of every month throughout 2024, Mountain & Prairie will be delving into conversations with a wide range of The Nature Conservancy's leaders, partners, collaborators, and stakeholders, highlighting the myriad of conservation challenges, opportunities, and solutions here in the American West and beyond. On this week's episode we're joined by Iskandar, known widely on the internet as Alawite Anon, the same fellow who's anonymous post on 4chan went viral a few weeks ago and found itself as the topic of discussion for our episode dubiously labeled “Interview with a Gnostic Muslim.” As fate would have it, he tracked us down and instead of punching us in the nose (which was probably warranted) he offered himself as a subject of interview about his ancient faith and the occult tenants contained therein. In the free section of the show we ask Iskandar about the origins of his people and faith, the esoteric aspects of his practice, the initiatory ordeals and structure of the inner order, its little known connection to the Knights Templar, the rejection of holiness, what occult materials they study and if women may participate or not. While this covers quite a mountain of interesting information, we go quite a bit deeper in the extended episode as we talk about the magickal mother letters AMS, advanced astral travel, the anatomy of the human soul, the origin of the demiurge, if gods can die, the highest principle, how to deal with demons, the Tree of Life, the archons or Sultans of this reality, the earth gates where they reside as guardians, the adversary or shadow entity, LUCIFER and finally, what cosmically horrific thing happens when we die. That the 20th century shapes our present and will influence our future is common point of debate in India. Clearly, politics and economics, culture and society clearly were deeply influenced, if not fundamentally shaped, by choices made at key points of time. Yet this applies equally, so with even greater long-term consequences, to the environment in its widest sense. In a more focussed way, this is how human actions, via technological choices or the ways land or water are governed, influence the non-human entities we share spaces with. Rather than view ecology and society as two distinct entities, the overlaps and interfaces can shed fresh light on where we stand today. knowing how we got to where we stand matters. India's recent environmental pasts have bearing not only on this country, but Asia and the world at large. In this episode of BIC Talks,  Professor of History and Environmental Studies, Ashoka University Prof. Mahesh Rangarajan delivers the first annual Vijay Thrivuvady memorial lecture that took place at the big premises in early January 2024. When it comes to plastics, we're in a real bind. We have yet to develop and scale attractive alternatives to the petroleum-based plastic products we all use every day, and the plastics industry drives well over a billion tons of greenhouse gasses, that's roughly 4% of total global emissions and plastic-related emissions are on track to double by 2060. Meanwhile, a small fraction – we're talking less than 10% – of plastics are recycled. Creating a circular economy for plastics is vital to eliminating the flow of plastic waste into our environment and to reducing the emissions generated from creating new plastic products. Today's conversation focuses on an ambitious effort to catalyze and fund the systems change needed to get us there. Circulate Capital is working to unlock a billion dollars to invest in circular solutions, and its partner Circulate Initiative offers research and insights to track this space and help recruit more private and public investment in this space. We're joined by Ellen Martin, Circulate Capital's Chief Impact Officer, and Umesh Madhavan, Research Director for Circulate Initiative. We talk about the history and state of the plastics crisis, their current efforts, and the investment opportunities they see. So today host Rachel dips her toes into the world of science to discuss epigenetics, mental health, and yoga with guest Valerie Knopik. Valerie has a PhD in Psychology and postdoctoral training in Psychiatric and Genetic Epidemiology. Active in mental health research, Valerie has a deep interest in how our internal biology and our external environment (including yoga, mindfulness, and meditation) can interact to positively change our mental health landscape.
