Bright on Buddhism - Asian Religions Series - Shintō Part 2 Hello and welcome to the Asian religions series. In this series, we will be discussing religious traditions in Asia other than Buddhism. Buddhism never existed in a vacuum, and as it has spread all across East Asia, it has developed, localized, and syncretized with local traditions in fascinating and significant ways. As such, we cannot provide a complete picture of East Asian without discussing those local traditions such as they were and are. Disclaimer: this series is very basic and introductory, and does not and cannot paint a complete picture of these religious traditions as they are in the present or throughout history. Today, we will be discussing Shintō, a very historically and culturally significant religious tradition in Japan. We hope you enjoy Resources: Azegami, Naoki (2012). Translated by Mark Teeuwen. Three news stories summarized & contextualized by analytic journalist Colin Wright.Note: I'll be on the road, delivering my girlfriend to her next artist residency (in Wausau, Wisconsin) through the end of the week, so there won't be OSN emails or pods Thursday or Friday. Sorry about that! But we'll be back to the usual schedule on Monday.US government issues first-ever space debris penalty to Dish NetworkSummary: Satellite television company Dish Network has been issued the first-ever fine for failing to de-orbit an aging satellite, the EchoStar-7, which has been lingering in orbit after its useful lifespan rather than being nudged onto a trajectory that would allow it to safely burn up in the atmosphere.Context: This is an issue because the orbit into which it was guided puts it squarely in a orbital debris risk zone—it was too low on propellant to make it all the way to the safe burn-up target orbit, so now it's in a highly populated region, equivalent to being stuck in the middle of a high-traffic highway, rather than having been delivered to the dump; in 2022 the FCC adopted a new rule that said satellite operators would need to dispose of their own aging satellite infrastructure within five years of a satellite completing its mission, and this was implemented because of the ever-increasing risk of collisions between all the satellites that are now hurling around the planet, faster than bullets, and the possibility that one collision could create so much debris that it sparks a cascade of collisions, destroying a bunch of in-orbit assets, and also, potentially, leading to what's called Kessler Syndrome, wherein the planet is surrounded by so much fast-moving debris that it becomes nearly impossible to launch anything new, or to safely maintain functional satellites.—The GuardianOne Sentence News is a reader-supported publication. Former idol trainees at the 60-year-old company have come out to accuse the agency's late founder Johnny Kitagawa, who died in 2019, of a consistent pattern of sexual assault.  Kitagawa's niece - Julie Keiko Fuijishima, the current president of the agency - has apologised in light of the snowballing allegations, which first date back to the 1980s, though she did not acknowledge the veracity of these claims. In this episode, Jan - a long-time Arashi fan, gives a background on Johnny & Associates, who Kitagawa is, and recaps the events that have happened in the current news cycle about the allegations.  She shares why these allegations, which first surfaced some 40 years ago, went ignored by mainstream Japanese media for as long as it did. She also discusses her own feelings as a long-time fan of the talents produced by Johnny & Associates. Johnny was a legendary figure in the world of J-Pop, known for his uncanny ability to turn unknown talents into superstars. He held the music industry, media, and A-listers of Japan under his spell, making his every command a golden ticket to success. Some saw him as a genius businessman and marketing mastermind, while others whispered that he was more akin to a devil, preying on the souls of his chosen trainees. But no one could deny the power he held, or the price he demanded for his services. Celebrities are often accused of selling their souls to the devil. Making deals with the devil. But it's alleged that Johnny didn't do deals and he took what he wanted. And what he wanted were the souls of every trainee he liked. He wanted his prey. Abstract: After traumatic events, simple cue-threat associative memories strengthen while episodic memories become fragmented. However, how the brain prioritizes cue associations over episodic coding of traumatic events remains unclear. Here, we developed a new episodic threat conditioning paradigm in which participants concurrently form two memory representations: cue associations and episodic cue sequence. We discovered that these two distinct memories compete for physiological fear expression, reorganizing overnight from an overgeneralized cue-based to a precise sequence-based expression. With multivariate fMRI, we track inter-area communication of the memory representations and demonstrate that a shift from hippocampal-dominant to prefrontal-dominant control of the fear regulatory circuit governs this memory maturation. Critically, this overnight reorganization is altered in individuals with heightened trait anxiety. Together, these findings suggest the brain prioritizes generalizable associative memories under recent traumatic stress, but resorts to selective episodic memories 24 hrs later. Time-dependent memory competition provides a unifying account for memory dysfunctions in posttraumatic stress disorders. Copy rights belong to original authors. We have a great conversation unpacking some basics about our guests' entry into the NFT space, and what initially drew them in. From there we look at the major hallmarks of what is popular right now in Japan, and how this compares to the rest of the world, before talking about important aspects of the field such as influencer and celebrity marketing. Takuya and AT then spend some time illuminating the inner workings of Nannda, and some more general thoughts on game design, and we finish off our chat by considering which types of games appeal to different Japanese demographics and why. Join us to hear it all! Key Points From This Episode: Our guests' paths into working in the NFT space, and their initial excitement about it. Insight into the state of the Japanese scene right now.  Thoughts on the current NFT projects that are having success in Japan.  Contextualising differences in the Japanese market and some reasons for popularity. Influencer marketing of NFTs and the main drives for demand.   The culture of big celebrity endorsement for brands and how this figures into the NFT landscape.  Barriers to entry that are influencing the Japanese market right now.  Comparing the mechanism at Nannda to other examples of play-to-earn.  Risk and reward in the two different approaches to game design.   The importance of the social dimension to games to increase engagement and difficulty.  Japanese audiences' attitudes towards different types of games.   Favourite NFT picks from Takuya and AT!  Tweetables: “Influencer marketing itself is big in Japan, YouTubers are big, TikTokers are big. Abstract: Radial neuronal migration is a key neurodevelopmental event for proper cortical laminar organization. Newly born neurons migrate in a complex three-dimensional environment generated by the extracellular matrix (ECM), secreted factors, and neighboring cells. However, the molecular mechanisms by which the ECM controls radial migration remain largely unknown. We herein identified neurocan (NCAN), a risk factor for neuropsychiatric disorders, as a major chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan produced by developing cortical neurons. NCAN binds to both radial glial cell-derived tenascin-C (TNC) and hyaluronan (HA), a large linear polysaccharide, forming a ternary complex of NCAN, TNC, and HA. Developing cortical neurons make contact with the ternary complex during migration. The enzymatic or genetic disruption of the ternary complex impairs radial migration by suppressing the multipolar-to-bipolar transition. Furthermore, TNC in the ternary complex promotes neuronal morphological maturation. The present results provide evidence for the cooperative role of neuron- and radial glial cell-derived ECM molecules in cortical development. Copy rights belong to original authors. He coaches leaders, entrepreneurs and creatives to build confidence and strategies for success.Rick shares a bit about his upbringing and how it might not exactly be what people would think. We also touch on the debate about whether people should go to college, or not. Over the years, whether in business, social, or art, he has gone from scared of being judged, to being completely open about his own successes and failures. In this episode, we talked about content creation, especially when it comes to building courses and educational material. We discuss confidence, creativity, building business and how to stop stealing dreams from people. With so much experience and an appreciation for all forms of creativity and lifelong learning, Rick Kitigawa is the perfect JKL guest.Rick is a founder, speaker, NFT creator, business consultant, storyteller and artist. He is the type of person that will help make anyone's life better just by working with him in any capacity. Just an all around really good person. Keep These Things In Mind When Creating Content And CoursesThere are a ton of snake oil salesmen in the online business world. But this is no reason to give up on your dream of being an educational leader in online business. It is important that we have more good people creating courses and content now more than ever before. Here are some things to keep in mind when creating your own business courses and content: Give it away. Give away ninety plus percent of your effort. The more we serve, the more we will get in return, but only if we truly serve first. Don't stress about what to monetize, or not. Give it away and then when the time comes to build a strategy to monetize, you will know.Define what you'll teach. We don't have to focus on a niche in our lives overall, but being able to define a focus for what you want to teach people is really important. Each course, or mini business will have a specific focus. You can decide what your focus will be either by expertise, interests, or a combination of both.Ask your community. One of the most important ways that we can decide our vision for content we create, or products and services we sell is by asking our audience what they have questions about.People who pay are more likely to pay attention. It is really helpful to give away a lot of free content because let's face it, the ability to learn in today's day and age should be free. But, don't underestimate the fact that some people need to put skin in the game in order to actually take the material, or course seriously.Have a price that suits your plan. You do not have to give into the idea that everything should be super expensive that you sell in order for it to be valued. But, it is also reasonable to have premium prices. It all comes down to knowing who you want to serve, what is the best price for them to pay and appreciating that when you take in revenue you can return it right back into surviving your community even better. So you may have a specific price plan for your customers, or you may have a value ladder that is accessible to anyone.Cater courses and content to different learning styles. Similar to the changing in price, if you want to help more people then make sure you teach with different methods. You may need to create audio, video, visual, and written content to help people learn in the way they learn best, at that moment.Engage people where they are at. Craft ways to ensure that there are equal entry points to the curriculum and content you are creating. Either split up your offers so that it is geared towards specific expertise and abilities. Or create the ability for the content to be flexible within it. Either way the progress should be individualized.Create unscalable learning moments. Synchronous learning opportunities, like real time projects, face to face meetings and live discussions may not be overly efficient when it comes to speed and convenience. But, in many cases these challenges, and peer to peer interactions are extremely valuable to the best learning. So make sure you have at least some live time opportunities and a community element. The community could exist in a group, or a channel, where people are able to work together whenever they need some peer interaction.Post clear instructions. When it comes to making sure people understand things like what your content can teach them, how to buy, how to succeed and how to follow the programs, don't assume it is easy to figure out. Test this with your community, take constructive criticism, but more importantly, over communicate and constantly make it easier and easier for learners to succeed.Define due dates. It's really common in such a fast pace world that we also fail to get things done on time. If you have your content and courses beautifully laid out, with clear teaching, but no due dates then it will be too easy for people to set it aside and forget about it. Even if your content is really engaging, be sure to embed deadlines that help people stay on track to the next micro goal, one at a time.Memorable Quotes“Do the hard work of building an audience.”“We see generosity as giving something away, which is good too. But, it can also be generous to charge people. For one, you honor the work by allowing yourself to continue doing this work. And two, when there's no skin in the game, no investment from the participant, they have a much higher chance of giving up, yet you know success is helpful to them.”“Coaching is so valuable because it's personalized and in real time, as opposed to having a more prescriptive tone. Podcasts, YouTube, books, they're great. But, they're structured for many people. When I'm coming up against something personal, I'd rather have someone tailor their expertise and knowledge to me.”Guest BioRick is the founder of Kaiju Coaching. Whether you've passed your cursor over their logo on a streaming service, spotted it on the front of a Golden State Warriors jersey, or use their cash-back rebate system, the Rakuten brand is everywhere and actively expanding. Today's guest, Takuya Kitagawa is the Managing Executive Officer & CDO at Rakuten. On this episode, Takuya joins Cindi to discuss how the company has found massive, international success across multiple industries by integrating data across lines of business to deliver better customer experiences. He also dives into the importance of data fluency at every level, and elaborates on how Rakuten is leveraging the concept of “digital twins” to better connect with customers. Stick around to hear all of this, plus exciting details regarding Rakuten latest moonshot projects.Key TakeawaysIntegrated data delivers better customer experiences: Rakuten has seen major success in offering enhanced services and experiences to customers around the world. Their secret? Integrating data across multiple lines of business, starting with customer login credentials. This approach makes using multiple services a seamless experience and builds customer loyalty. You don't have to reinvent the wheel: Before building a new technology from the ground up, see if anyone else has already done it. There's so much you can learn, borrow, or buy from others. If you can learn to leverage the innovation that's already happening around you, you'll be in a better position to accelerate your own digital transformation. Invest in data fluency at every level: It's important that executives be just as data fluent as anyone else in your organization. For Rakuten, investing in data fluency at the highest levels of leadership manifests as quarterly AI bootcamps and mandatory data trainings.Key Quotes“We discovered when we acquired the credit card company, that it is much, much cheaper to send traffic from one internal service to the other than down going through of course advertising companies such as Google and Facebook, even though this takes a little ingenuity and creativity. If you think about it, eCommerce and credit cards come really well together because, to shop online, you need credit cards and the key point is how do you connect credit card back to the shopping?”“Our CEO had a very, very clear directive - if we are going to acquire a company, integration of it starts from integration of ID. So log ID needs to be completely the same. This already has been a common practice across Google, in Facebook to align the log ID starting from there you really have to integrate the data. So that's a key point when you acquire a company one of the key agreements you have to make with the other company is we have to integrate ID and data.”“Algorithms [are] becoming a commodity at this point. The key differentiator of AI is data."“Frankly, the best practice is to learn from [the] outside, because venture capital money is flowing at this ridiculous amount, and there [are] so many people, so much money, and so much effort to try to make things easier. Before you try to build what's necessary yourself, it's better to look around and see if there are other companies who can help you… Be humble. [We] try to learn from our site and leverage what is already there.”MentionsDr. Hisataka Kobayashi's Discovery of photo immunotherapyHarvard University Partnership FC Barcelona and Golden State WarriorsAbout TakuyaTakuya Kitagawa is the managing executive officer and Chief Data Officer of Rakuten Inc, and serves as the director for Well-being for Planet Earth(WPE). As Chief Data Officer of Rakuten group, he is responsible for the end-to-end value creation and execution of AI & data strategy, and manages a global organization located across the world including Japan, U.S., India, France and Singapore. He also leads Rakuten institute of technology, R&D function of the group, as the global head. Vision of his group is the fundamental understanding of customers and their behaviors with AI and data; how business and service can empower customers to spend their money and time better. As a board of director for well-being for Planet Earth, he further extends and applies the understanding of human beings and society to contribute to more general domains of well-being across the world. Prior to working on AI, he worked as a theoretical physicist and published more than 20 papers in journals including “Science” and “Nature Physics.” Dr. Kitagawa obtained his Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University and A.B. in physics and mathematics from Harvard College.--The Data Chief is presented by our friends at ThoughtSpot. The Japanese entertainment industry was once again shaken to its very core by another huge news story this week as Johnny Kitagawa, the founder of Johnny's Entertainment and the "producer" of Japanese pop giants like Arashi, SMAP, and TOKIO passed away due to complications from a stroke.  Though remembered in absolutely glowing terms, Johnny left behind more than just his boy bands. In this week's episode, Stephen goes over the less scrupulous side of Johnny from the child molestation accusations to his strong-arming of the media.  Stephen's probably getting fired for this one, so enjoy!   Find us on Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/SmallinJapan   Twitter: http://twitter.com/small_in_japan       ---Mentioned on the show: https://www.nytimes.com/2000/01/30/world/in-japan-tarnishing-a-star-maker.html

This week we talk to Dr. Tomoko Kitagawa who is visiting South Africa with a lecture series called “The Lady Samurai”, The Role of Women in the Diplomacy during the Unification of Japan. We discuss the application of Dr Kitagawa’s work for women in contemporary society recognising the contribution of their consultative and diplomacy skills in peacemaking and negotiating. We consider economic empowerment of women noting that women must be given the space to work and realise their full potential. Dr Kitagawa remarks that household economics need a makeover, where traditionally unpaid work, such as child rearing and home cleaning, becomes paid work, and thus creates economic opportunity. Education has taken Dr Kitagawa around the world; we emphasise education as a key enabler for women’s development and contend that it should be incorporated into every women’s schedule, even if this means embarking on part-time learning to balance multiple commitments, in order to acquire essential knowledge and new skills.

From June 30-July 3 of 2017, Godzilla suit actors Haruo Nakajima and Tom Kitagawa were featured guests at the Days of the Dead convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. This is the panel Q and A with the two actors from the convention. Unfortunately, this would also become one of Haruo Nakajima's final interviews and his final convention appearance. The two men answer questions about how they got involved in suit acting, working in the suits, working with miniatures, their thoughts on the American Godzilla films and more! With the clearance from the Days of the Dead con, KT is proud to present this panel discussion with two legendary kaiju performers! Listen and enjoy! Special thanks to Nick Adam Poling and Jonathan Crocetti for providing the audio, Christopher Marti for his post production work, and Corey Hannigan for translating at the panel! DISCLAIMER: The audio for this is a little rough, as the convention did not have a proper set up to accommodate some of the recording hardware. After a lot of post-production work, we are presenting it in the absolute best quality we were able to get from the elements available.

Judge Harvey Ross grew up in Clarksdale, Mississippi, in the 1920s when racial segregation was absolute and unquestioned.  After college, Ross joined his brother’s law firm and represented many black clients.  During this time, his own views on race and segregation evolved. As demand for civil rights began to grow, a Japanese Episcopal priest, Daisuke Kitagawa, came to Clarksdale to help ease racial tensions. In this episode, Ross remembers the meetings Kitagawa hosted between white and black community leaders and how those meeting laid the groundwork for future projects. Ross was served in the State House of Representatives from 1948 to 1956. During that time, the White Citizens Council was formed by Robert “Tut” Patterson, to maintain segregation in the South. Ross recalls the group’s initial popularity and their office in Greenwood. Coahoma Opportunities, Inc. was organized in 1965 with grant money from a Community Action program, set up by the Kennedy administration.  Ross discusses the challenges of dealing with the all-white county board of supervisors. And he looks back with pride at the positive effect that C.O.I. has had on the entire community.

State Space Mixed Models for Longitudinal Observations with Binary and Binomial Responses

We propose a new class of state space models for longitudinal discrete response data where the observation equation is specified in an additive form involving both deterministic and dynamic components. These models allow us to explicitly address the effects of trend, seasonal or other time-varying covariates while preserving the power of state space models in modeling dynamic pattern of data. We develop different Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms to carry out statistical inference for models with binary and binomial responses. In a simulation experiment we investigate the mixing and convergence properties of these algorithms. In particular, we demonstrate that a joint state variable update is preferable over individual updates. In addition, different prior choices are studied. Finally, we illustrate the applicability of the proposed state space mixed models for longitudinal binomial response data in the analysis of the Tokyo rainfall data (Kitagawa 1987).
