D'Tindersticks, de Quintett vun Nottingham, deen 1991 mat der EP “Old Horse” hiren Debut erausbruecht huet, hunn definitiv e roude Fuedem an hirem Schafen. Zanter hirem éischten Debut 1993 hu si ouni midd ze ginn hir Musek weiderentwéckelt a verfeinert. 31 Joer méi spéit si si bei hirem 14. Studioalbum ukomm, d'Plack “Soft Tissue“, erauskomm virun 11 Deeg. An nach un enger anerer Saach weist sech, datt eng Band mengt, wat si mécht: datt et iwwer d'Joren ëmmer méi schwéier gëtt, si an e Genre-Tirang ze quëtschen. D'Tindersticks kléngen ëmmer no sech selwer, a keng aner Band kléngt wéi si. “Soft Tissue“ vun Tindersticks ass eraus op City Slang, de Marc Clement hëlt mat duerch den Album.

In this episode, we get to meet El Perro Del Mar, AKA: Swedish singer, songwriter, musician, producer Sarah Assbring. In this chat, Sarah and I talk at length about her newest full-length EPDM record, Big Anonymous, out now on City Slang. It's been a while since the last one, and we had a lot to talk about. We talk about the dark and emotional (and very personal) themes on Big Anonymous, the ways in which her sound has (and hasn't) shifted over the years, her lyrical technique, and the ways in which this album was more therapeutic than she ever thought it'd be. We also touch on the peculiar but fitting choice to include a Burt Bacharach cover on this album, as well as how she wrestles with being a contrarian in a world of immediacy and people pleasers. Thank you for listening.

Having first captured our attention with Monolithic Nuance (2018) for Longform Editions, Megan Mitchell's Cruel Diagonals has continued to impress with each new work. With Fractured Whole, she set herself the task of producing an album using nothing but her voice as raw material. While she deserves recognition as a gifted vocalist, she deserves at least as much praise for her production work, alchemically transmuting her voice into a wide range of instruments and textures. In this episode, she discusses the production challenges posed by Fractured Whole, her background in musical theatre, her work with the feminist archive Many Many Women, and much more. Vera shares how a plant ceremony inspired her to make her first record, why David Beeman's patience was crucial to her finishing the record and how Peacemaker's process was different. "I kurvestolen, i vintersolen" - Hjemfalden, 1991.God fornøjelse.Music: The Prelude Op. 28, No. 4 by Frédéric Chopin. Performed by Paul Cantrell, http://inthehands.com

Sen Morimoto - "If The Answer Isn't Love" from the 2023 album Diagnosis on City Slang Records. Chicago-based artist Sen Morimoto has signed with City Slang Records, accompanying the announcement with the new single "If The Answer Isn't Love." The track will appear on his third album, Diagnosis, out November 3rd via City Slang in partnership with his own Sooper Records. “In the face of imminent climate disaster, war and unending sickness it's natural to start considering what will remain and what might have made it all worth it,” Morimoto says of today's Song of the Day. “I want the sound of my music to reflect that same urgency – instruments warbling and splattered over the beat, melodies tangled and contradicting. I wrote this song about the enduring power of love and the struggle to hang onto that feeling when in crisis.” The song's video was directed by Chicago film production duo New Trash. Morimoto continues, "Up until my first tour in Japan, I washed dishes for a living. I would daydream all day at work about being a full time musician. My fantasies were sweet and naive, mostly just pop culture references glued together, stuff I'd seen in movies and music videos. It wasn't until I started touring full time that I realized how long the road is from being a working musician to building a life in music that is actually sustainable, which has become even harder as touring proves itself to be a gamble with bad odds, even for more established acts. I wrote this video concept as a kind of tongue-in-cheek visualization of those mid-shift daydreams. I'm dreaming of this big guitar solo in the sky, but even my fantasy is insecure, balancing on a rusted beam with no support." Journaliste : Hortense VolleRéalisation : Benjamin SarraliéMixage 3D en Dolby ATMOS pour une écoute immersive au casque : Jérémie BessetResponsable d'unité de production FMM – RFI Labo : Xavier GibertPour suivre Noga Erez :Youtube / Instagram / Facebook / Tik Tok / Twitter► Titres diffusés :Singles : Nails feat Missy Elliott (2022) ; Industry Baby (2022) ; I'm Tired (2022)Extraits de l'album KIDS (City Slang– 2021) : KTD ; Cipi ; Views ; You So Done ; End of the Road ; Bark Lou ; Kids ; Story ; Knockout ; No News on TV ; Fire Kites ; Candyman ; Switch me off Extraits de l'album Off the radar (City Slang–2017) : Dance While You Shoot

King Hannah - "Big Big Baby" from the 2022 album I'm Not Sorry, I Was Just Being Me on City Slang. While the duo that make up King Hannah - Craig Whittle and Hannah Merrick - hail from Liverpool, the music they make feels more fitting for the deep American south. Taking inspiration from the dark, mystical elements of that region, the band makes smokey, heavy Americana with tinges of dusky, rambling post-rock. Our Song of the Day, “Big Big Baby,” epitomizes this, utilizing slow, ominous drums, fuzzy guitars, and Merrick's sultry vocals for an ominous effect. But these tones belie the song's darkly humorous lyrics. Lines like “I heard you got a lady pregnant, well I can only wish her well /‘Cause soon you'll have a bigger baby, in the family than yourself” and “I hope you choke on a dumpling, at least that would be mildly fun” read as the punchlines of some harsh burns. The video for the song leans into the elements of the songs sound rather than lyrics, with Merrick slow dancing in a dark, slighted distorted room. The clip was directed by Whittle, proving the duo are a creative force to be reckoned with. Watch it at the link below. Pom Pom Squad - Popular (feat. Matthew Caws of Nada Surf) - a 2021 single on City Slang. Back in December, Pom Pom Squad turned a joke tweet into reality when they covered Nada Surf's “Popular” and remade the classic video shot by shot. “I'm gonna recreate the video for “Popular” by Nada Surf but I'm gonna play every character,” Mia Berrin tweeted in March 2021. Nine months later, that dream was realized. It's a fitting tribute for a band that's built their imagery around cheer parody. Their latest album Death of a Cheerleader saw Berrin explore the coming-of-age high school stories that Matthew Caws was subversing on Nada Surf's 1996 hit. There are different implications or meanings, though, hearing some of these lines from the voice of a queer woman of color rather than a straight white man. “Being attractive is the most important thing there is,” goes one the more iconic spoken-word lines from the song. “If you wanna catch the biggest fish in your pond, you have to be as attractive as possible.” For the video, Pom Pom Squad journeyed back to the same high school the original video was shot and enlisted real students to star alongside Berrin, who plays the teacher, football star, coach, and, of course, cheerleader. For an extra boost of authenticity, Caws joins the band on the football field to play guitar and sing backing vocals. Watch the video for “Popular” below and catch Pom Pom Squad at Neumos on Friday, March 11th. Song of the Day
Anna B Savage - Corncrakes

Anna B Savage - "Corncrakes" from the 2021 album A Common Turn on City Slang. In 2015, Anna B Savage released a straightforwardly titled EP titled just EP, with the four songs named after their tracklist placement. While it may have lacked appellative flair, the warmth and heart that radiated from her trembling vocals caught the ears of some big names like Father John Misty and Jenny Hval, who both brought her on tour. Turns out, it was all a bit too much too soon and the Dublin artist retreated. Thankfully, last year she returned with the debut full-length A Common Turn. Our Song of the Day is the incredible “Corncrake,” an early single off the record. Brooding and beautiful, the song expresses both Savage's depth of emotion and breadth of range - jumping from deep, rich croons to glistening falsetto with operatic ease. While starting out forlornly whispered, the song cathartically builds near the end with the repeating refrain of “I don't know if this is even real / I don't feel things as keenly as I used to,” for a dynamically emotional and visceral experience. “At this moment in my life, I was entering a seismic shift,” Savage says of the song. “I felt like I was getting clues from the universe, and all I needed to do to ‘work it all out' was piece them together. These clues came in the form of birds – in this instance a corncrake. I now see the corncrake as a layout for a theme: something tangible, but imperceptible, evident but not necessarily visible.” For those unfamiliar with the species of bird known as corncrakes (they're not common in America), they're known for being easy to hear but often difficult to spot - hence the metaphor of imperceptibility. She goes on further to explain what exactly she was experiencing within her relationship at the time that made her think of the corncrake. “It just appeared twice in a short space of time, not having known what it was, it being this thing you can hear but can't certainly see, and it's noticeable but not overwhelming or overbearing. When I was much younger, when I'd feel something for someone, I'd be ravenous to hang out around them all the time and wouldn't be able to control myself in their presence. But with him, it felt calm, and because of that calmness, I was like, ‘Am I actually feeling proper sexy feelings, or do I just kind of love him?' So that's what that's about, and the evolution of the way you feel things toward people when you get a little bit older.”  The song comes along with a video by nature producer Chris Howard (Planet Earth Live, Springwatch, Autumnwatch) that's meant to be a representation of “the happiness, confusion, longing, desire, sadness, and also a stoicism” that Anna had experienced in the last few years. Creedence Clearwater Rival: “Bad Moon Rising” (1969)3.
