Episode 248: Let's go back in time to March 26, 1983! That's the date on the issue of Billboard magazine that Joe and Kari have chosen to peruse (and you can do the same at www.worldradiohistory.com). Let's take a look at some of the ink splashed for artists like Simple Minds, The Bar-Kays, and Ultravox. You'll also hear about The First Video Games Conference, and an interesting ad taken out to get the attention of a famous singer. Also making the pages of the issue are Jules Shear, The Brains, and you know it wouldn't be an episode of HRT80s without a mention of at least one Mandrell sister!
++++++++++Song-Tipps zur Folge++++++++++ Hero Takes A Fall Going Down To Liverpool Manic Monday (gerne auch die Version von Apollonia 6 anhören) Walking Down Your Street Walk Like An Egyptian If She Knew What She Wants (gern auch das Original von Jules Shear anhören) Following In Your Room Eternal Flame Be With You Watching The Sky

Fue la nueva ola en Estados Unidos, de costa a costa. De Detroit, Boston o Nueva York a San Francisco o Los Ángeles. De The Cars o The Romantics a Greg Kihn o The Tazmanian Devils. The Beatles, The Kinks, The Hollies. Y aquella ola empapó a figuras ya consagradas como Jackson Browne, Jules Shear, Andrew Gold o Linda Ronstadt. Would you ever guess that one of the key producers for the radical synth-styled music coming out of the UK in the 80s was an American former LA session musician? Thanks to artists like New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, OMD and many others, Stephen Hague shaped what we think of when we think of the best music artists like that had to offer in the 80s. He's been a key figure in music ever since. Since his 80s career was recently covered fantastically on the 80sography podcast, we dig into other areas like the 90s and beyond that included Robbie Robertson, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Peter Gabriel, James, Robert Palmer, a-ha, Dubstar, and Blow Monkeys (with New Order and PSB also being discussed), as well as his early days with Jules Shear and Walter Egan. When you combine this with the series on 80sography you get the complete picture of this genius. "Mercy Rising" The California born singer/songwriter Maia Sharp wrote her first song at 5, so it’s no surprise that over the years her compositions have been recorded by—and by the way this is going to be a murderers row of talent, so get ready—Bonnie Rait, Keb Mo, Cher, Art Garfunkel, Paul Carrack and Trisha Yearwood. More Maia Sharp resume items: and mind you, this is a partial list: she’s toured all over the U.S. and the UK, she’s appeared on NPR’s All Things Considered, CBS Early Morning and the Today Show, she’s an adjunct professor at NYU’s Summer Songwriter workshop and she’s been writing for Songwriting with Soldiers where active duty service members team up with songwriters who help them turn their stories into songs. Sharp has put out nearly ten solo albums and her newest is Mercy Rising. Filled with poeticism, wisdom, and observational grace, Mercy Rising is a moving collection that’s a perfect balance of elegance and intensity. In this conversation Maia talks about recovering from COVID, the power of Bonnie Raitt and what it was like to step into a songwriting castle with Jane Siberry and Jules Shear and get down to business. Oh, and we have a super psychic moment about Louise Goffin….listen for it! www.maisharp.com https://www.maiasharp.com/shop https://www.instagram.com/maiasharpmusic/ www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com

Is there anything better than a perfectly written pop song? And, when you're talking about great music, you're most definitely talking about Jules Shear. With his 14th solo album coming out on Friday, what better time to talk with Jules about his writing, his outlook on music and his new dog? (The album is titled "Slower," and, honestly, do we need to tell you if it's good or not? It's Jules Shear- the man doesn't mess around.)For more information, you can follow Jules on Facebook, or you can check out his website.
This week on Revenge of the 80s Radio, Jules Shear talks with Chris about his newest album, Slower. The famed song writer offers a more mellow collection, perhaps reflective of his life in Upstate New York. During our conversation, Shear discusses some of the tracks and how he created them

Matthew Sweet joins us to unpack his process of writing power pop gems like "Girlfriend," "The Ugly Truth," "Sick of Myself" and many others. EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE Scott and Paul analyze mix tapes, cool bands, and "older brother rock." PART TWO - 5:29 mark Paul and Scott jump on the phone with Matthew Sweet, one of the nicest rock stars on the planet, to get the lowdown on how a postcard from Michael Stipe altered his musical future; why he says being a solo artist is lonely; the reason he describes the drums on "Girlfriend" as "odd." why a paralyzing fear of flying kept him off airplanes for nearly a decade; what he really thinks of being labeled "power pop;" why he was conflicted about making The Thorns album; what happened when he suggested that he and Susanna Hoffs write an album together; and the song he collaborated on with a Saturday Night Live legend that led to another SNL legend covering one of his very earliest recordings. ABOUT MATTHEW SWEET Best known for hits such as “Girlfriend” and “Sick of Myself,” Matthew Sweet is a melodically-oriented rock tunesmith who was at the center of the 1990s power pop revival. After befriending R.E.M., the native Nebraskan relocated to Georgia, where he joined Michael Stipe’s sister Lynda’s band, Oh-OK and launched his own group Buzz of Delight. Sweet eventually launched his solo career from New York and then Los Angeles, earning gold certification for his albums Girlfriend and 100% Fun. The latter was named one of the year’s best by Entertainment Weekly, and he has gone on to release a dozen more critically-acclaimed solo albums. Additionally, he has collaborated on a series of cover song projects with Susana Hoffs, as well as on an album of original material in collaboration with Shawn Mullins and Pete Droge under the name The Thorns. As a songwriter, Matthew has collaborated with The Jayhawks, Hanson, Michael Stipe, Chris Stamey, and Jules Shear, with whom he wrote the title track for ‘Til Tuesday’s album Everything’s Different Now. His most recent album is titled Wicked System of Things.
