Colors of Life – Confusion This week on Poetic Resurrection we discuss confusion. Sometimes I wonder why we go through experiences and maybe read too much into it and then we're confused. This month didn't get off to a great start for me. My computer crashed and I'm still recovering my info. I usually have an episode ready each Monday but that hasn't happened this month. One of the pluses so far this month is that I visited my family in Chicago and I'm blessed to have my parents in good health. What is confusion? Dictionary's definition is lack of understanding or uncertainty; the state of being bewildered or unclear in one's mind about something. Why do we feel this way? Is it because our heart/soul wants us to change? I've noticed when I feel confused is when my heart and my mind are at odds. “Your intellect may be confused, but your emotions will never lie to you.” Roger Ebert. I feel I should go one way in a situation but my mind disagrees. “The most confused we ever get is when we're trying to convince our heads of something our heart knows is a lie.” Karen Marie Moning. “Your eyes may mislead you sometimes. So don't be serious in observing, listen to your heart at times when you are confused.” Giridhar Alwar. (gi rid te) Is it fear? Most likely what stops us from going forward is fear. Do we have the finances to change? Will I lose my home? Is my family okay if I decide to move on? Are you ruled by possessions? At times our financial burdens are because we give our power away to possessions. We have to have the latest electronics, fashions, cars, appliances, etc. It's one thing if your employment requires equipment, it's your livelihood, or if you have the cash to buy the items. Another is if you're getting into debt for them. I have in the past, bought items because I thought I would be perceived as well to do. I wasn't. I lived from paycheck to paycheck, many of us do. This isn't how I want to live. It's stressful not to have your rent, mortgage, money to pay bills and I have been guilty of using my credit cards to survive in times of unemployment. “No matter how confused or deluded we may be at the moment, the underlying and essential nature of our being is clear and pure.” Lama Yeshe. During the pandemic, many of us learned what's important, and surprisingly I saw many who refuse to change and blamed the pandemic, politics, and companies for their problems. This is known as one aspect in psychology as psychological projection Psychological projection is the process of misinterpreting what is "inside" as coming from "outside". It forms the basis of empathy by the projection of personal experiences to understand someone else's subjective world. In its malignant forms, it is a defense mechanism in which the ego defends itself against disowned and highly negative parts of the self by denying their existence in themselves and attributing them to others, breeding misunderstanding and causing untold interpersonal damage. A bully may project their own feelings of vulnerability onto the target, or a person who is confused may project feelings of confusion and inadequacy onto other people. Projection incorporates blame-shifting and can manifest as shame dumping. Projection has been described as an early phase of introjection. Wikipedia “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” – Stephen Covey. This book has it all...time travel, a heroine fleeing a dark secret in her past, meddling fae, a murderous ex girlfriend, not one but two near death sick bed scenes, sensory deprivation, Highlander Times viagra, an accidental aphrodisiac scene, light kidnapping, and one swaggering Highlander who's so generously hung that comparisons to actual horses are made. For a genre that seems all hunky dory, there is certainly a lot of drama in Romancelandia. Especially when it comes to issues of authorship and publishing! This month, Jackie and Jen dish on some of the most notorious controversies, dramas, and petty squabbles (including heir own) that have rocked the steady ship of romance. Buckle in sparkly nerds. It's gonna be a bumpy ride.Let us know what your favorite scandal was at the end of the month! There's no reward...but if you email us we might remember to give you a shout out in the next episode...maybe. We forget a lot of things.Christiane SerruyaAfter 22 years of practicing law, Rio de Janeiro-based Serruya decided to become an author. After 6-7 years of writing, she had churned out more than 30 works and had one of her short stories was published in a best-selling collection. In Feb 2019 news broke that this "author" had blatantly plagiarized Courtney Milan and others. Soon authors like Tessa Dare, Lisa Kleypas, Kresley Cole, Karen Marie Moning, and over 40 others found their work copied into Serruya's. These passages ranged from short sentences with moderate rewriting to whole multi-paragraph sections that were near verbatim.Tessa Dare started a whole hashtag: “#copypasteCris”In short, Serruya says that she was not responsible for the plagiarism. Instead, she put the blame on an unnamed ghostwriter she hired from the site Fiverr..."ghostwriter" - writers for hire who are paid but receive none of the credit for the work produced. The Stratemeyer SyndicateThen she goes and plagiarizes the queen herself, Nora Roberts. Nora retaliates and takes her to international court (because Queen Nora has the powers to do so), and an injunction goes through which bars the physical or electronic sale of Serruya's books which were involved in the lawsuit, as well as barring Serruya from receiving royalties from those books. Roberts also won a monetary settlement, which she donated to literary charities.#CockyGateBasically, indie author Falena Hopkins tried to copyright the word "cocky" then tried to go back on what she said that she was trying to stop other authors from using cover designs similar to hersShe's written her Cocker Brother series since 2016. The series concerns 6 brothers and extends onto stories about their children and holidays.According to the court documents Jen went through, Hopkins was worried that there were too many other “cocky” titles out there, and readers were getting confused about which books to buy. She showed the court a few messages from people confused because they had bought the wrong books. Hopkins claimed that a lot of readers messaged her being “wait...this has a cocky word in it too but it's not you??” or “Wait, this is the same model you used!!!”Hopkins filed for trademark protection on May 1, 2018It starts devolving into a twitter battle, and Hopkins sues three people; Tara Crescent, a man who protested the lawsuit, and a publicist (on accident). Hopkins tries to argue that the use of Cocky in the title should be limited to her books only because she's got the most notoriety or something like that (read Jen's articles for more detail). The judge doesn't agree with Hopkins' argument, since "cocky" is a common-use word. The injunction is thrown out, the restraining order against the use of "cocky" is denied, and the trademark registration is cancelled.Alexa Riley...a scandal?Alexa Riley (AR) is a team of best-friend indie authors known for their spicy quick reads. At one time they were publishing on Kindle Unlimited at a rate of almost 2-3 books per month between ~2016-2018.News started coming out though that AR was not only stuffing pages (including extra blank pages in their ebooks for extra page turns and therefore more money), but also of plagiarizing, using ghostwriters, and paying for click farms"click farms" - any kind of operation intended to fraudulently interact with a website. In order to appear more legitimate, the clicks come from real people using mostly mobile devices (cheaper, smaller in size, easier to arrange).Amazon took them down almost immediately...and then nothing...else...happened?Now you can find AR's books through the library (some of them), AR's website, Eden books, iBooks, Kobo, Nook, and Scribd...The Syndicate of James PattersonPatterson uses multiple coauthors when publishing "his" books. He then publishes these books under his name and brand.Instead of being the sole author, Patterson works with lesser-known writers, providing, according to him, extensive outlines, plots, characters and notes to help drive his coauthor through the story. Patterson then, again according to him, goes through upon receipt of the manuscripts and extensively edits. Patterson does his revisions, and rewrites as necessary before sending it back to the coauthor for the next written draft. Over time the number of rewrites goes down for each new collaborator. These co-authors are paid by Patterson. Patterson then takes over the publishing process.Perceived issues with Patterson's publicationsHe calls himself the #1 bestseller...and yet...he's not?Patterson isn't completely writing his own books, and we don't know for sure the writing process with coauthors, beyond his own testimony. So can he fully call himself a bestselling author? Also, as it pertains to romancelandia...there are romance authors (and other authors out there) who have published way more books than Patterson under their own name...so what gives Patterson the right to call himself the #1 bestseller?So...Many...LinksMore on the Stratemeyer SyndicateMore on Sue GraftonChristiane Serruya:"Cristiane Serruya: Alleged Plagiarist" (SB Sarah, 2019)"Cristiane Serruya is a copyright infringer, a plagiarist, and an idiot" (Milan, 2019)"Romance novelist Cristiane Serruya accused of plagiarism" (Flood, 2019a)"The Cristiane Serruya Plagiarism Scandal" (Bailey, 2019a)Lucas Morta blog post "I've never earned any penny with any book in all these years, says Cristiane Serruya, acussed of plagiarizing more than 30 authors" (Morta, 2019)"Nora Roberts Sues Cristiane Serruya, Wins Injunction" (Bailey, 2019b)"Nora Roberts files ‘multi-plagiarism' lawsuit alleging writer copied more than 40 authors" (Flood, 2019b)"Janet Dailey and the Curious Case of the Missing Author" (Hobbs, 2021)"#CopyPasteCris: Romance Novelist Cristiane Serruya Caught in Plagiarizing Scandal" (Fernandes, 2019)"Plagiarism, then and now" (Reeth, 2019a)"Not a rant, but a promise" (Reeth, 2019b)"Let me address this" (Reeth, 2019c)"Blowback" (Reeth, 2019d)"Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" (Reeth, 2019e)"To Sum Up- Sort of" (Reeth, 2019f)"Update" (Reeth, 2019g)"Here's How I work" (Reeth, 2019h)"Readers are Amazing" (Reeth, 2019i)"Breaking news 2" (Reeth, 2019j)"Brazilian romance writer accused of plagiarizing from Courtney Milan, other novelists" (Schaub, 2019)#Cockygate"Cleaning Up the Cocky Cock-Up" (SB Sarah, 2018)"Don't Do This, Ever: Faleena Hopkins Cocks The Whole Entire ****Up" (Trout, 2018)"Trademark Case: Authors Guild Wins ‘CockyGate' Court Ruling" (Anderson, 2018)"Romance Author gets unduly cocky over registered trademark " (Whipple, 2018)"'Cockygate' Author Faleena Hopkins Backs Down From Trademark Dispute After A Settlement Is Reached" (Tsoumbakos, 2018)"How an author trademarking the word “cocky” turned the romance novel industry inside out" (Grady, 2018)"Cockygate: Faleena Hopkins Has Registered a Trademark on Cocky, and is Using it to Threaten Other Romance Authors" (Hoffelder, 2018)"Chance Carter And #Cockygate Collide" (Gaughran, 2021)"Re: Cockygate" (Hopkins, 2019)US Patent and Trademark Office status of "cocky""A cocky Lawyer Reviews #cockygate" (Youtube video, French, 2018)Alexa RileyTwitter thread by @Jenny_Trout (2019)Reddit Thread "Alexa Riley is banned from Amazon"James Patterson"James Patterson mostly doesn't write his books. We discuss "Darkfever" by Karen Marie Moning. We have more questions than answers. We reminisce about early 2000s fashion. We have no idea how to pronounce "sinsar dubh." Plus, does this book even count as romance?
Shhh! A Library Podcast is back at last with “Robots vs. Romance, Part 2”! Jenna and Morgan celebrate all things romance this month with a quiz, book discussion, and more. This month's title is Beyond the Highland Mist by Karen Marie Moning.Next month's title is The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett.
The ladies get together to discuss DarkFever by Karen Marie Moning, an urban fantasy, mystery, romance hybrid and the first book of the fever series.
Join Garland librarians Jenna and Morgan as they discuss graduate school, the Summer Reading Program, and reading books outside of their preferred genres. Morgan gives an honest review of this month’s challenge: All Systems Red by Martha Wells.Next month’s challenge is Beyond the Highland Mist by Karen Marie Moning.
cw: Sexual assault, dub-con Welcome back, Literary Slummers, to another episode of Shelf Aware! This week, we're kicking off a new unit on Highland time slip romances with Beyond the Highland Mist. Is this one of the most offensive books we've read? Yes. We've got yucky consent issues, overly-domineering men, and a female protagonist with no personality (other than her hatred of beautiful men). Will Em be able to redeem the genre for Anna? It's a tall order. Join us next week for another Morph Monday! This week Jess Pryde joins Jenn for a special romance episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Engineering for Cats by Mac Delaney and our $500 YA Giveaway. Questions 1. Hi Amanda and Jenn, Love the show! I've read so many great books based on your recommendations. I love to read romance novels, usually the steamier the better. But the thing I enjoy most about them is the sexual tension and building intimacy. I like to see that a couple actually cares for each other and it’s not just a one night stand. To give you an idea, some books that I've really enjoyed are Hold Me by Courtney Milan; Hate to Want You by Alisha Rai; Sarah J. Maas' Court of Thorns and Roses series; A Bollywood Affair by Sonali Dev; and The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. I know there's a ton more out there but would love to get your suggestions on some great ones. I'm open to pretty much anything. Thanks! --Becca 2. Hi ladies! I'm looking for a novel that contains a great love story. A lot of romances written today (both contemporary and historical) turn me off because it seems like the couple has an immediate attraction that results in inevitable sex scenes while complications still exist, and then the rest of the book is the main characters finding out how to have an actual relationship in addition to the sex, despite whatever plot devices are in their way. I think Jane Austen spoiled me. Call me old fashioned, but I want a couple that fall in love without having sex first! I especially like stories where the guy has been in love with the girl for a long time but doesn't think he has a chance for some reason. Think Molesley and Baxter from Downton Abbey (which I am STILL salty about not being resolved) or Professor Bhaer and Jo from Little Women. It doesn't have to be an old book and it doesn't have to be strictly romance; I'm perfectly willing to read any book as long as it makes me ACHE over several hundred pages for the prospective lovers to finally communicate their feelings! Thank you so much! P.S. I forgot to mention that I read A Distant Heart recently, and that's more in the realm of what I'm looking for since the sex came very late after the two had already had years of build up, but I'd still prefer a book where the profession of love comes before the sex! --Brannan 3. Dear Jenn and Amanda, I'm a huge fan of your show and Book Riot in general. I'm really looking forward to Book Riot Live! Thanks for being so amazing! I'm proudly a plus-sized/curvy (for lack of a better term) woman in her late twenties, and I was wondering if you had recommendations for books with female main characters who are also described this way. Growing up I really identified with Meg Murray because she felt out of place with her appearance like I did. Recently, I have loved reading Dumplin', Size 12 is Not Fat, Duff, and Bet Me because they featured characters I could relate to physically who were described positively and had a happy ending that didn't involve them losing a lot of weight. (I most recently read It Had To Be You, and didn't love it.) I loved the body positive message of each book, and I'm a sucker for a makeover sequence, but I have always hated reading books where the fat/chubby girl found happiness after losing a few pounds. I plan on reading Shrill and 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl, but I was wondering if you had any recommendations for fiction or romance books with more characters I could relate to that have enjoyable story lines. I have read too many non-fiction books and graphic novels, so I would prefer not to get books in those categories. I also have learned that I don't do well with reading books with unlikeable characters, for example, I struggled with Girl On the Train and Gone Girl. I'm sorry for this incredibly long email, but I would really appreciate any help that you could give me! Thank you so much! Sincerely, --M 4. Hi Amanda and Jenn! My TBR is getting ridiculous because of this podcast, but I still love it! I'm currently in grad school reading some very dry material about metadata, and I need something exciting to get me through this dull semester. Lately, I've been in the mood for some romance. Something non traditional like The Fever series by Karen Marie Moning. I love the slow and sexy build of the couple's relationship and how for the majority of the series they didn't trust each other, and fought all the time. However, they always had each other's back. I love how you never knew if they were going to kill or kiss each other. I haven't been able to find anything like this. I read all genres, so I'll take any recommendations you've got! Thanks! --Ana 5. Until listening to different book riot podcasts and reading this site I was prejudiced against romance novels. When I was in middle school and starting to explore adult literature, I was also curious about sex and found some romance books to read. My thirteen year old self however just picked whatever free ebook I could find so my parents wouldn't know what I was reading. Consequently I read some pretty bad novels, and have since considered romance "lesser literature" (yes yes I'm a bad person- but I'm trying to rectify the situation!). Also as I've gotten older I've found I find it harder and harder for a writer to convince me a romance is real, and I also enjoy a healthy dose of plot unrelated to romance. I fall on the snooty side of reading classics and literary fiction, but I want to expand my horizons. I love historical fiction so if you know of any good romance set it in the past that is a plus. But really I just want to know what you think are some good romance reads for beginners that will get me interested in the genre. Thanks! P.S. My favorite kinds of romance are the forbidden kind, and the love/hate thing (i.e. Han and Leia, or Starbuck and Apollo from Battlestar Galactica). Yes I'm a cliche. --Connie 6. Hello---I thought I was done with Romance (novels, not in real life, of course), but then I listened to your Podcast all about romance, decided to try a few you recommended and guess what? I am in love with Romance novels again! But--there are so many to choose from and I've been away from the genre for so long, I am hoping you can recommend some new ones for me. I am open to pretty much anything, but if you know of something kind of "Southern" and a bit more "intense" than some, that would be great. I'm also not adverse to same sex love stories --I read "Think of England" from your rec and loved it. Also Loved "Every Good Earl Deserves a Lover" and Julia Quinn's Bridgerton Series. Loved them, just looking for a little bit more intense (sex and story). Can you help me? Thanks so much. --Debbie in Nevada 7. After years of reading exclusively literary fiction or non-fiction, I stumbled upon the Romance genre and am finding it very interesting and, often, a lot of fun. I'd love to share this experience...perhaps even with my (adventurous) book club. Any recommendations for a book within the romance genre that would make a good book club pick? Help support this podcast! >> Hey friends. Have you ever questioned your writer-ly destiny? Then Episode 022 of the Write Now podcast is for you. What if I simply wasn't meant to be a writer? I received a letter from a very bright, very talented young writer named Amanda who was wondering whether she was actually meant to be a writer. Her letter affected me so much that I decided to dedicate this episode to exploring the topic. Amanda writes, I'm not sure if I'm meant to be writing... I like coming up with characters and thinking about the situations they would get into. I like developing the characters. I love dialogue particularly. ...But I spend maybe 5% of my writing time actually writing. The rest of the time, I am in misery. I agonize over my faults until I can barely move, let alone be creative... I'm just wondering if I should even be writing at all. Can someone maybe have a passion for writing but then shouldn't do it anyway? Wow. It took me a while, but I was finally able to provide Amanda with an answer, and I'd like to share it with you. There is no "should". The first thing I would do is question your "shoulds" and "meant tos". When you wonder whether you were "meant" to be a writer, or whether you "should" be writing, whose mandate are you following? Who is imposing those "shoulds"? Fate? God or a higher power? A teacher, professor, or friend? Yourself? That feeling of enjoyment/satisfaction/joy when you're able to write? I went through a time when my own "shoulds" seriously conflicted with what I wanted and needed to do with my life. I would bet that you have been through something similar as well. What's hard to remember amidst all those "shoulds" is that your life is not just one pre-determined path. Your life isn't just point A to point B. It's point A to LITERALLY ANYWHERE. There are thousands of possibilities, and thousands of choices you make in any given day that will determine the course of your life. You were given (or have, depending on your perspective) a talent for writing. And it's up to you to decide what you want to do with that talent. Do you want to write as a hobby? As a career? Or do you not want to write at all? The only person who can make that choice is you. Have you ever asked yourself this question? Let me know what conclusion you came to, or what happened because of the choice you made, by sending an email to hello [at] sarahwerner.com or sharing your thoughts in the comments below! Book of the week. (Okay, books.) I got lost in not only a great book but a great series this week. Karen Marie Moning's excellent urban fantasy "Fever" pentalogy (like a trilogy, but with five parts!) begins with Darkfever and ends with Shadowfever and wow is it a wild, gripping, breathtaking ride. I read all five books in some sort of fever of my own, often staying up significantly past my bedtime to read just one more chapter. The premise? MacKayla Lane travels to Dublin, Ireland to identify the body of her sister and best friend, Alina. While she's there, she notices that things aren't quite right, and embarks on an adventure to not only identify her sister's killer but prevent the extinction of humanity at the hands of the warring Seelie and Unseelie Fae courts. Read this series if you love urban fantasy, mysterious strangers, Dublin, tightly knit plots, bookshops, self-aware heroines with swords and spears, saucy brooding heroes, and epic storytelling. Do not read this series if you are sensitive to foul language or graphically depicted adult situations. (Seriously. I'm not kidding. It's graphic.) Otherwise... I hope you don't have to get up early for work the next morning. Keep up-to-date with my book-related adventures on Goodreads. Talk to me! Submit your own thoughts or questions on my contact page,...

Phil was born with a gift: a voice that is pure magic, from Scots brogue to trailer trash, it's rich, complex, clear, evocative, beautiful. Also an experienced stage and film actor, Phil will soon be appearing in Mickey Matson and the Copperhead Conspiracy this May. "Narrator Phil Gigante’s skill and versatility are easily apparent in two very different Earphones Award-winning mysteries: He’s utterly believable as Texas sleuths (SAVAGE SEASON) and international spies (THE DEFECTOR)." “Gigante handles a smorgasbord of accents and intricate narrative with the same level of professionalism as the spies who are willing to kill and to die for their countries." -2009

Lunapic Photo Editing Phil Gigante is a hidden treasure, you may not know it, but you've probably heard his golden voice if you've ever listened to an audio book. Phil is well known for his Scottish brogue in Karen Marie Moning's Highlander series. He gives Adam Black and each of the MacKeltar brothers a signature sound, each one able to melt the panties off unsuspecting lasses at a meer whisper. In Karen's Fever series, he is the mysterious and incredibly sexy Jericho Barrons... still again melting the readers into submission. And finally, to my delight he is also Gabriel Allon, always undercover fine art restorer and assassin to Israel's government....ummmm still sexy. Well, Candi Fox & Kelly "DemonLover" Oakes have cornered him for the show and are keeping him captive to delight you. I wonder if he'll wear his kilt?
