She's Anita, a zombie raising hate crime enthusiast! He's Jean Claude, a vampire who's in the Chamber of Commerce and shops exclusively at International Male! They do not do it until the fifth book! It's Guilty Pleasures, the first Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter book by Laurell K. Hamilton! This was a serious thing for Sara back in college, who is currently having an existential crisis about the trashbag fakeass non-intersectional feminism of the all of it. It was new to Courtney, who hated it. It's halfway to Halloween, so we pulled this one out of a musty old crypt where we honestly kinda forgot about how we recorded it! I mentioned a quote and I mentioned the author but there were, like, twenty minutes between the two in the episode, so let me clarify that when I talked about how "the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house" I was referring to an essay of the same title by Audre Lorde, from her collection Sister Outsider which is a) a quick read, go read it right now, it won't take you but a minute, and b) about being constantly asked to be the only Black woman, or the only lesbian, or the only Black lesbian, at every conference and on every panel. "As women, we have been taught either to ignore our differences, or to view them as causes for separation and suspicion rather than as forces for change. Without community there is no liberation, only the most vulnerable and temporary armistice between an individual and her oppression. But community must not mean a shedding of our differences, nor the pathetic pretense that these differences do not exist." Audre Lorde would eat Anita Blake alive. There's actually quite a bit of content-warning stuff in here - obviously there's vampire-typical violence and lack of consent and all that, but there's also a ton coming from ol' Anita - you got some fat shaming, some kink shaming, she's really got it in for sex workers, she can't stand it when other people have any kind of good time, she's Not Like Other Girls... I bet there's even a bit in here where she talks about how unfashionably big her boobs are and how unfashionably beautiful her skin is and how unfashionably thick and lustrous her mane of hair is.

ALISTAIR CROSS Alistair Cross' debut novel, The Crimson Corset, a vampiric tale of terror and seduction, was an immediate bestseller earning praise from veteran vampire-lit author, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, and New York Times bestseller, Jay Bonansinga, author of The Walking Dead series. In 2012, Alistair joined forces with international bestseller, Tamara Thorne, and as Thorne & Cross, they write – among other things – the successful Gothic series, The Ravencrest Saga. Their debut collaboration, The Cliffhouse Haunting, was a bestseller. They are currently at work on their next solo novels and a new collaborative project. In 2014, Alistair and Tamara began the radio show, Thorne & Cross: Haunted Nights LIVE!, which has featured such guests as Anne Rice of The Vampire Chronicles, Charlaine Harris of the Southern Vampire Mysteries and basis of the HBO series True Blood, Jeff Lindsay, author of the Dexter novels, Jay Bonansinga of The Walking Dead series, Laurell K. Hamilton of the Anita Blake novels, Peter Atkins, screenwriter of HELLRAISER 2, 3, and 4, worldwide bestseller V.C. Andrews, and New York Times best sellers Preston & Child, Christopher Rice, and Christopher Moore. TAMARA THORNE Tamara Thorne's first novel was published in 1991. Since then she has written many more, including international bestsellers Haunted, Bad Things, Moonfall, and The Sorority. Tamara's interest in writing is lifelong, as is her fascination with the paranormal, occult, mythology and folklore. She's been an avid ghost story collector and writer all her life. Tamara's novels range from straight-out ghost stories to tales of witchcraft, conspiracies, UFOs, elemental forces, and vampires. No matter what topic she chooses, chances are you'll find a ghost or two lurking in the background. Today, she and her frequent collaborator, Alistair Cross, share their worlds and continue to write about ghosts and other mysterious forces. Whether collaborating or writing solo, there is no shortage of humor, sex, blood, and spookiness. Tamara also conducts real-life investigations of anomalous phenomena and has seen a number of odd things over the last twenty years. As an open-minded skeptic, she's spoken to many paranormal groups and has appeared on the television show, Ghost Adventures. Most recently, she and Alistair Cross went on a five-day investigation to an allegedly haunted cabin in California's Gold Country - an adventure that inspired The Cliffhouse Haunting. She has also been featured on many radio programs and in various newspapers on the topics of haunted places and local lore. A journalist by training, she occasionally writes about ghosts and hauntings for a syndicate of southern California newspapers, but her first love is, and has always been, telling ghost stories to make people scream. . . and laugh. Tamara and Alistair co-host Thorne & Cross: Haunted Nights LIVE! every Thursday night on Blog Talk Radio. You can also visit Tamara on Twitter, Facebook, or at her blog.

In part two of three of their 3rd Annual Mysterious Galaxy Summer Bingo Showdown Throwdown, Smack and Gabi settle in with some wine to continue playing two games. One is the typical showdown throwdown which we all know and love. The other is Rock, Paper, Scissors for what should be an impartial tie-breaker but which is somehow…not. This month's match-up features hard horror limits (mushrooms!), sci-fi portal fantasy time shenanigan takes on Arthurian legend, sassy magical cats, voyeuristic houses, and a fun, definitely 100% accurate history sidebar with Smack about Elizabethan England. Come back in January for part three to see who wins! Yes, there's some overlap here and there with genres or authors that we love, but for the most part, we gravitate in opposite directions when it comes to reading. In case it wasn't clear, the sidhe are the star kith (some might say "Marys Sue" or "prime donne") of Changeling: the Dreaming. More metaplot space was devoted to their intrigues than any other, players seem drawn to play them (possibly for those sweet House benefits), and while they never got 72 or 96 pages of proper kithbook, they got ~400 pages of House book divided across three supplements. (And that's putting aside Nobles: the Shining Host and The Shadow Court, each of which could also arguably be called "Kithbooks: Sidhe"...) It is to the first of that trilogy that we turn this week, as we discuss Noblesse Oblige: The Book of Houses, covering the five "core" Seelie Houses from 1st edition. It's a weighty tome with a lot of information about the history and culture of these groups, but we do our best to get through them at a brisk clip...! Granted, you might not have time to listen to in-depth descriptions of the Houses and their role in the broader landscape of Kithain society. We thought it might be best to reduce each one to a phrase or two that summarizes their ethos, but we wanted to jazz it up a bit, so here they are as flavor profile descriptions, complete with cheese pairings: House Dougal: robust with little variation, notes of stone fruit, smoky finish; pairs nicely with a sharp Cheddar House Eiluned: complex and (actually) acidic, a succession of flavors, velvety mouthfeel; goes well with an aged Gruyère House Fiona: effervescent and bright, with a balance between vanilla and citrus; even out with a mild goat cheese House Gwydion: intensely flavorful with cedar notes, but a slight metallic aftertaste; only Roquefort can match its power House Liam: simple and bittersweet, with occasional tartness and a nutty finish; best with a smear of honey-coated Brie Feel free to agree or disagree with these picks on our social media, where you can also share and discuss other Changeling-flavored whatnot: Discord: https://discord.me/ctp Email: podcast@changelingthepodcast.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100082973960699 Mastodon: https://dice.camp/@ChangelingPod Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/changelingthepodcast your hosts Josh Hillerup (any pronoun) grew up in the suburbs of Arcadia, where light rail is affordable and organic co-ops abound. Today I've invited the legendary Laurell K. Hamilton to talk about her career writing her much beloved Anita Blake series. We chat about her deft genre blending and how including horror allowed her to write the sort of mystery she wanted. We also discuss how she broke barriers representing polyamory and BDSM, and the important ways her books impacted readers. She was so generous with her time that we chatted for 2 hours, so the episode dives without my usual intro, and I've pulled sections of our conversation instead of using the full recording. I hope you enjoy it! You can order Laurell's books from my online bookshop, which helps both the podcast as well as independent bookstores nationwide. That's at bookshop.org/shop/sheworeblack. You can also help the show by following me on instagram, facebook and twitter, and leaving me a review wherever you get your podcasts. Hamilton, Neil Gaiman und andere. Nun wollen wir sehen, wie sich die urbane Fantasy im ersten Jahrzehnt des 21. Jahrhunderts entwickelt hat. Musik: Kevin MacLeod. Folge direkt herunterladen
“I will love you always. When this red hair is white, I will still love you. When the smooth softness of youth is replaced by the delicate softness of age, I will still want to touch your skin. When your face is full of the lines of every smile you have ever smiled, of every surprise I have seen flash through your eyes, when every tear you have ever cried has left its mark upon your face,I will treasure you all the more, because I was there to see it all. Settle in, because this is a long one... the raw audio for this recording was the longest we've had by far. But that's because Nobles: the Shining Host, the first Changeling book to delve into Kithain nobility, covers a lot of bases. It's not quite "Kithbook: Sidhe," but there's enough about them in there to satisfy most players and STs who want to know more about the kith; on top of that, you have plenty about the social structure and cultural dynamics of nobles from any background. We get bits of history, an epic tale, political parties and secret societies, information about Concordia's monarchs, some new Traits (including two new Arts), a new House, character templates... the book really packs it in. We cover it in this episode as briskly, yet thoroughly, as possible—but even so, this is almost our longest episode thus far. (This is also the reason why it's going out a bit late this week. Nostra maxima culpa.) how to play a sidhe Just kidding—we're not going to tell you the exact answer to that, because there really isn't one. Ultimately, you do what you want to do. But, since the book focuses heavily (not entirely!) on this kith, we are going to point out a couple things about trends and possibilities. See, the traditional roles for sidhe in CtD games have tended towards: 1. pretty Mary Sues who are (or demand to be) able to do anything (especially when people just want to play a sidhe for that extra Boon), 2. uptight patricians who treat egoism and sucking all the oxygen out of a room (or gaming session) as a virtue, 3. as Josh put it, the real-life protagonists of soap operas (for the viewing pleasure of the commoners), or 4. all of the above, which is doable because the first three are stat-, personality-, and narrative-based, respectively. The exact shape of these things has waxed and waned over the years—"mysterious warrior-sorcerer with Appearance 7 and/or an ethereal presence" seems to be a common expression of (1) these days—but the common threads are quite visible. The unfortunate thing is that the early books, at least, set up a lot of alternatives to these archetypes, even as they also provide examples of them. And yet somehow, the alternatives seem to have faded more and more into the background. Maybe this is due to real-world ideals working their way into the game: commoners are moving front and center with progressive, anti-aristocratic ideas, and the sidhe have flattened more and more into these Tolkien-elf types with little variation. The sidhe are a kith; Title is a Background; nobility is a quality; and while the three may overlap more than most other kith-Trait-characteristic combinations, it is not a necessity. (Remember, those in the back: your sidhe does not have to have a Title/be part of a House.) We mention this because the sidhe fall into the trap most often, maybe, of becoming one-dimensional characters, with the only variation being the specific Trait build that represents their particular snottiness. It's true that kiths tend to shape characters; it's also true that more and more, especially with C20, there is pushback against such determinism. (Old fogies' note: it was always there, e.g., you could play soft-hearted Seelie redcap who liked macrame, but the game's willingness to foreground that varied.) So why would you not make a sidhe who is more interesting than the typical [insert Title here] [insert elaborate faux-Sindarin name here] [insert House here] [insert optional florid moniker here], knight and/or wizard and/or courtier par excellence? One of the first canon sidhe in fiction is Leigh from the Immortal Eyes trilogy, who is a teenage redhead knight struggling to reconcile her newly-discovered nature, princess memories, and swelling sense of honor with her upbringing as a working-class cop's daughter, as well as her fervent desire to be a chef. She has a soft spot for protecting childlings (though she's also a firm babysitter), she has a crush on the bad-boy Unseelie eshu, and she worries about making ends meet with her line-cook salary in her crummy one-bedroom (but she's also thrilled to be living away from her mortal family for the first time). She is far from perfect, but aspires to be better, and she has the capabilities of a beautiful warrior, but is far from defined by them. This book gives a lot of material to work with to navigate that level of complexity, as do many of the others—if you're willing to look for it. We encourage you, therefore, to think outside the box and make being a sidhe (or being a noble) not the most important thing about your character. It may not be the least important either, but give your character a little depth before working that piece in. Obviously, this advice can be applied to any kith—it's just that sidhe tend to suffer for it most than the others. ... the Trod Background Just because the headache that is this Background deserved to be reproduced in its entirety, here it is in table format. Pick the Background level you want in the first column, then choose one row within that level to determine which destinations the trod has access to across the world/Dreaming, and (in the last column) how often it's available: Destinations:localregionalnationalNear DreamingFar DreamingDeep DreamingAccessible...At Level 111/4 of the yearLevel 2 (choose one row)1 2-3 11/2 of the year 1/4 of the year all the timeLevel 3 (choose one row)2-3 2-3 2-31 1 00 1 01/2 of the year 1/4 of the year all the timeLevel 4 (choose one row)4-5 4-5 2-3 2-32 2 1 11 1 0 02 1 0 10 1 0 01/2 of the year 1/4 of the year all the time 1/2 of the yearLevel 5 (choose one row)4-5 4-5 2-33-4 4-5 12 4 02 2 10 2 01 1 01/2 of the year 1/4 of the year all the time Yes, we're aware that the first and third options for Level 2 are directly contradictory. The book also suggests that the accessibility be tied to natural cycles, e.g., a trod that's only open 1/4 of the year might be available during a certain season, and a trod open 1/2 of the year might only be available every other day or only at night. Surely there was some mathematical formula to figure out the balance of all this, but no idea what that might have been; heaven help you if you decide to have a single Background represent multiple trods, e.g., taking four dots in the Background allows you to choose two options from Level 2. Are we having fun yet? ... clancy brown We're not saying the sidhe on page 49 isn't noted actor and voice actor (including, ironically, in Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia) Clancy Brown, but it's totally Clancy Brown. Publicity photo provided for comparison! ... parliamentary breakdown (but not the fun kind) In case you needed some statistics for who's in the Parliament circa this book's publication in late 1995/early 1996... all percentages are relative to the entire Parliament, not the specific group being described: Sidhe nobles make up 42% of the Parliament, even though they only make up 5% of the Kithain in Concordia (though that number may have increased a bit as more Houses have returned, and the Autumn Sidhe have become a thing in C20). The Traditionalists make up 20%, Reformers 15%, and Modernists 7%Commoner nobles make up 20% of the Parliament: Traditionalists 8%, Reformers 4%, Modernists 8%. Meanwhile, non-Titled commoners make up the remaining 38%, with Traditionalists 15%, Reformers 7%, and Modernists 16%, suggesting that commoner political affiliation is roughly the same, regardless of whether they're noble or not—and with a surprisingly high number of Traditionalists. Overall, when you see that the nobles have a majority, and the Traditionalists have a plurality, the feudal system sticking around as long as it has begins to make a bit more sense (as does the more reform-minded fae's frustration).Within the Parliament, sidhe make up 42%—therefore, all sidhe in the Parliament are nobles. The remaining breakdown is boggans at 14%, trolls at 9%, nockers at 8%, pooka and satyrs at 6% each, sluagh, redcaps, and eshu at 5% each. We don't have breakdowns by kith for nobles and political inclinations, but presumably the boggans and trolls have higher rates of both nobility and Traditionalism.Similarly, we don't get political inclination breakdown by House, but we're told that Gwydion makes up 12% of Parliament, Eiluned and Fiona 10% each, Dougal 6%, Liam 3%, and Scathach a pitiful 1%. We also have the note that 95% of the Parliament is Seelie—estimated, of course. Obviously, as new kiths have been made standard in C20, Unseelie power has become more openly displayed, and the Autumn World's political landscape has evolved, all of these are subject to change. But as a baseline for how things work, it's still a useful tool to start with... in the episode, we sort of poke fun at the voting system of Concordia. Nevertheless, there is undeniable nerdy pleasure to be had from a story centered around the electoral campaigns and machinations of the fae, if you want to work that into your chronicle. (Yes, one of us might be a fan of both Borgen on TV night and Die Mächer on board game night.) ... your hosts Josh Hillerup (he/him) flew into battle on a song and a prayer. Pooka G (any pronoun/they) strolled into Hell with some flowers in the hair. ... "I had been too long away from the nobility; I had forgotten how silly even the best of them could be." —Laurell K. Cocoa Griot- I am bringing that "auntie" wisdom and energy on a weekly basis.
“There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds.” ― Laurell K. Hamilton, https://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/4198 (Mistral')s Kiss 0:07 Good evening and welcome to my humble podcast abode. I am Cocoa Griot, you know that 50 something who is delighted to talk to you about life, love, and a heaping of other topics. Today I want to discuss the lyrics of one of my favorite songs by Envogue and how it can apply to our lives. The song is entitled Give It Up, Turn It Loose. If you don't know the song, the basic gist of it is this is young lady is being strung along by her boyfriend. Her friends have tried to encourage her to give it up and turn it loose because it's not a healthy relationship for her. Tonight, I want to focus on some things that I have to give up and turn loose. There's nothing healthy about holding on to these three things. 0:52 Every now and I'm going to show a little of my nerdy side and guys just bear with me. This is one of those nights. One of the things that I've learned I have to do is let go of past trauma. I want to explain what not working through past trauma can do to us and why it's particularly harmful. Recently, I read that you can think of past trauma as shrapnel in your mind. That's right, it's leftover harmful fragments of an injury. When you don't remove physical shrapnel, it has an impact on the body. Mental shrapnel has an impact on the mind that can prevent you from experiencing your best life and happiness. I believe this problem exists among many people in our society today. It's definitely difficult to work through traumatic experiences, but healing from them offers a fuller and richer life. Negative events tend to stay in our minds 10 times longer than positive events. The implications of that just blow my mind. How many of us at the end of the day can recount more negative experiences than positive? When I think about children who are growing up in this pandemic.,I wonder how much trauma they are experiencing and absorbing? There is so much secondary trauma that piles on top of what they already are dealing with personally. I'm on a mission to give past trauma up and turn it loose. 2:16 The second thing I have committed myself to giving up and turning loose is self-doubt. Wayne Gretzky once said you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. I am super guilty of this because I often suffer from analysis paralysis. I would think through a situation so deeply that I convinced myself I don't have the tools to carry out whatever the task is at hand. Has that ever happened to you? You were presented with an opportunity and you convinced yourself that you don't have the knowledge, skills, or abilities to handle the task. Dunning Kruger effect is real, but here's the irony regarding this. People who boast about being confident and competent, often are not. People who do have the acumen for a task, often shy away from it because of self-doubt. It is important to take honest stock of what you have to offer in this situation. I'm the first to say I never want to be promoted past my competence, but you do have to give yourself credit for the things you do know and are able to do. Moving forward I'm willing to take an honest assessment of my skills and not knock myself before I even give myself a chance to prove that I can't do something. I have to give it up and turn it loose. 3:34 The last thing I need to give up and turn loose and I am so ashamed to say this ya'll is holding grudges. This is one of the most pointless and fruitless things that exist in my life. If a person angers me, the recovery period is pretty fast. Hurt my feelings and well that's when a grudge might just sneak up and appear. Voltaire said, "We are all formed of frailty and error, let us reciprocally pardon one another. "That's easier said than done, my friends! When someone injures me emotionally I must admit my first thought is not how I've been...

Today I'm joined by the brainy and delightful bestselling sci-fi/fantasy author Lindsey Sparks, who got me to read a book that approximately one million people have recommended to me. Lindsey calls “A Discovery of Witches” a grown-up Twilight meets the Da Vinci Code, which I think is spot on. She also blew my mind when she explained how a good sci-fi or fantasy novel will stand on its own when all fantastical elements are pulled out of it, which in turn made me rethink what I have liked about the few books in those genres I've read. One warning: we delve into the topic of miscarriage in this episode, and how it can be a trigger for many readers, and how hard it is to avoid. I've moved this part of our conversation to the end of the podcast, so if this is a topic you aren't up to, you may want to tap out at about the 20 minute mark. You'll still get the book chat, but you can skip over the part you are sensitive to. We are so darn excited for today's podcast. Not only was Laurell one of those interviews where you can just *feel* the writerly energy in the room, but she was creative, kind, thoughtful—and has amazing tips for your work. From avoiding info dumps (and a brilliant technique we'd never heard of) to planning a series (28 books strong!), research for writing in another gender to consistently getting in the right headspace to be productive, this episode is filled with actionable tips. Plus, if you've ever written between genres, Laurell is proof you can do so and not only make it work, but creatively thrive. Laurell Kaye Hamilton (born February 19, 1963) is an American multi-genre writer. She is best known as the author of two series of stories, Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter and Merry Gentry. Her New York Times-bestselling Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series centers on Anita Blake, a professional zombie raiser, vampire executioner and supernatural consultant for the police, which includes novels, short story collections, and comic books. Six million copies of Anita Blake novels are in print. Her New York Times-bestselling Merry Gentry series centers on Meredith Gentry, Princess of the Unseelie court of Faerie, a private detective facing repeated assassination attempts. Both fantasy series follow their protagonists as they gain in power and deal with the dangerous “realities” of worlds in which creatures of legend live. Laurell was born in rural Arkansas but grew up in northern Indiana with her grandmother. Her education includes degrees in English and biology from Marion College (now called Indiana Wesleyan University). Learn more at https://www.laurellkhamilton.com/.

'Wow! [This audiobook] has it all - a terrific new character, devious twists, plenty of action and one hell of an ending' JONATHAN MABERRY, New York Times bestselling author of Ink and Rage Angels walk among us, but so do other unearthly beings in this brand-new series by the internationally bestselling author of the Anita Blake and Merry Gentry series. Meet Detective Zaniel Havelock. A man who can talk to angels. As an Angel Speaker, Zaniel once used his special gift to serve both the celestial beings and his fellow humans. But a terrible betrayal forced him to abandon that life. Now he's a cop working in the City of Angels. But where angels walk among us, so do demons. And there's no question that there's evil at work when Zaniel is called to the murder scene of a college student. But is this just evil that one human being can do to another, or something more? When demonic possession is a possibility, even angelic protection can only go so far. The race is on to stop the killer before he finds his next victim. But Zaniel is facing his own very personal demons, and the past he never truly left behind...
Exorcisms, spasms, and government benefits, oh my! Thumbs at the ready smutz 'cause you'll be unable to speak after this long, hard, girthy, thick, difficult, stretching... episode? Sorry, we forgot what we were talking about for a minute there. Anyways... this week we decided to fill you up with Micah by Laurell K. Hamilton. Will she have you purring or clawing your way out? Guess you'll have to click to find out.
This month we all had the dubious pleasure of reading A Kiss of Shadows by Laurell K. Hamilton. This is one big book, and if you like erotic literature, the fey, and a whole LOT of lore you'll probably enjoy it! We had... mixed feelings. This episode we are talking about "Interlude," which was first released as part of the "Out of this World" anthology of short stories by J.D. Robb, Laurell K. Hamilton, Susan Krinard and Maggie Shayne. In this one, Eve and the gang are attending a Police Conference on Olympus. While there, she meets with one of Peabody's idols, Commander Douglas Skinner. Eve quickly realizes that Skinner is a dick, because he tells her that the reason she hasn't made Captain yet is because of some "...ill advised personal decisions" she's made. He tells her that he can help her get Captains bars if she helps him take down Roarke. (Really, Dude?) Eve basically tells him to go pound sand, then has a confrontation with one of Skinner's Security Guards. But then the Security Guard is found dead, and not only is Roarke a suspect, but Eve can't even really investigate the murder. She has to turn the murder over to the Chief of Police on Olympus, Darcia Angelo, who both Jen and Tara think sounds really hot. Commander Skinner is pointing the finger at Roarke for the murder. Eve can't figure out why Skinner has such a hard on for Roarke until she looks into Skinner's records and finds that 25 or so years earlier, several of Skinner's men died during an operation to bring down a criminal ring that included Patrick Roarke. Even though this book is very short, a LOT happens in a short time. We find out some details about Roarke's father, and there's a chance that Patrick Roarke was in Dallas at the same time that Eve was found at the age of 8. Is that too much of a coincidence? Maybe, but we don't really care, because this was still a fantastic book. So many really great moments in such a tiny book. There's cute Eve and Roarke moments, great moments with Peabody, Feeney and Morris, We meet a new character, Eve in a fancy dress at a ladies tea, multiple explosions, "we almost died" sex... what more could you want?

This week's episode is a rebroadcast of episode 25, where we featured two librarians from the Northeast Regional branch of the Louisville Free Public Library. Mk Eagle and Hannah Elliott talked about Books and Brews 502, which is similar to the Library's summer reading program for kids, except it is for adults and can include beer and coffee. While Hannah has now moved to Jefferson County Public Schools, mk is still at LFPL and provided us with an update for this year's program, which, like everything, is different due to COVID. Books and Brews 502 runs from December 1, 2020 -February 29, 2021. Mk says the main difference is that there will be no pop-up libraries. Instead, folks can check in at seven local breweries during their respective weeks in December, January, and February. Or Books and Brews 502 participants can check-in in the two participating coffee shops at anytime during those months. Mk says the free book giveaways will be exclusively at Against the Grain's Public House the second week of each month, but there won't be browsing. Instead, tell your bartender you're participating in Books and Brews and get handed a surprise book. How cool is that? Books, and coffee or beer brews go perfectly together. For more details about the program go to www.lfpl.org Books mentioned in this episode: 1- Laurell K. "Sucker Punch": A brutal murder, a suspect in jail, and an execution planned—but what if the wrong person is about to be killed? When a fellow U.S. Marshal asks Anita Blake to fly to a tiny community in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on an emergency consult, she knows time is running short. When she arrives, there is plenty of proof that a young wereleopard killed his uncle in the most gruesome and bloody way possible. As the mounting evidence points to him, a warrant of execution is already under way. But something seems off about the murder, and Anita has been asked for her expert opinion on the crime scene. Despite escalating pressure from local cops and the family's cries for justice for their dead patriarch, Anita quickly realizes that the evidence doesn't quite add up. Time is against Anita, as the tight-knit community is up in arms and its fear of supernaturals is growing. She races to uncover the truth and determine whether the Marshals have caught the killer or are about to execute an innocent man—all in the name of justice.

Anita Blake is good at her job, maybe too good. When the master vampire of the city wants her to investigate some killings she is not given much of a choice. Highlights from our conversation: How the world has changed in the 25 years she's been writing the series in terms of feminism, representation, technology, and so much more--and how that has impacted her writing. How social media has changed the world and our interactions with people whose views differ from ours. Why her readers were so distressed when she broke two characters up in the aftermath of 9/11. How she responds to negative fans and the criticism that her series has changed and now has too much sex. Her experiences with polyamory and how it was through research for Anita that she learned about that world. What her research into BDSM looked like in 1997 long before discussions of BDSM were mainstream. Her hilarious first experience in a BDSM club when she knew absolutely nothing. Why you're safer at a BDSM event than at an average bar. How she learned to balance motherhood with her own identity and her art. Can you be happier? We have David Bell, Michael Brandman and Howard Kaplan live on the air today. We will also play the exclusive interview we did with #1 NYT and International Bestselling author Laurell K. Hamilton. Laurell K. Hamilton: "Serpentine": Vampire hunter Anita Blake has managed to overcome everything she faces. But this time there's a monster that even she doesn't know how to fight... A remote Florida island is the perfect wedding destination for the upcoming nuptials of Anita's fellow U.S. Marshal and best friend Edward. For Anita, the vacation is a welcome break, as it's the first trip she gets to take with just wereleopards Micah and Nathaniel. But it's not all fun and games and bachelor parties... In this tropical paradise Micah discovers a horrific new form of lycanthropy, one that has afflicted a single family for generations. Believed to be the result of an ancient Greek curse, it turns human bodies into a mass of snakes. When long-simmering resentment leads to a big blowout within the wedding party, the last thing Anita needs is more drama. But it finds her anyway when women start disappearing from the hotel, and worse--her own friends and lovers are considered the prime suspects. There's a strange power afoot that Anita has never confronted before, a force that's rendering those around her helpless in its thrall. Unable to face it on her own, Anita is willing to accept help from even the deadliest places. Help that she will most certainly regret--if she survives at all, that is...
Gary Starta is a former journalist who studied English and Journalism at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. His love for science fiction compelled him to write his first novel What Are You Made Of? published in 2006. Inspired by Isaac Asimov, the science fiction novel focuses on intelligent artificial life and whether sentient androids should possess the same rights as humans. The androids in Starta's novel are created as hybrids - part machine, part human - further blurring the line between human and machine. Starta foresees a near future where humans will be forced to decide if intelligent machinery is indeed a life form. Possibly, in this near future, some humans will possess computer enhancements to overcome disabilities becoming hybrids themselves. The line between biological life form and mechanical life form continues to be examined in 2010's Gods of the Machines. 9 Incarnate, along with its preceding Caitlin Diggs (series) novels, Demon Inhibitions, Extreme Liquidation and Blood Web are reminiscent of the The X-files television/movie series. Contemporary authors Laurell K. Hamilton, Rachel Caine, Jim Butcher and Kelly Armstrong also fuel his aspiration to create paranormal suspense. Its follow up is 2012's Kindred Killers. Additionally, Starta foresees his 2008 novella ' Alzabreah's Garden ' - a fantasy romance - as another out-of-the-box effort.
