It's not hoarding if it's pretty books! This is a show many months in the making! Turns out coordinating a podcast with someone in Australia is not as simple as you would think. But it finally worked out and here we are! I wanted to talk to Sara because she runs a fairly awesome bookish community that would've been wiped from existence if she didn't raise it from the ashes. And now, it's alive and thriving and about 200 people strong. In this episode, we're talking about monthly book subscription boxes, special edition books and how they appeal to the collectors in us, and of course, the discord that brings it all together. Check out below for all the info we discussed! If I missed anything, reach out and let me know and I'll update it. Until next time! Links and Info Discussed Here are the links where you'll find the top 4 monthly book subscriptions we discussed. If you're really curious, every site has a catalog/past book database where you can see the offerings they've had in the past. If you want to really dive into it and have more questions, the link to the discord is below. Every subscription is going to have a waitlist you have to sign up for, some of which could be as short as a few weeks to as long as 10 months. So keep that in mind! Fairyloot Illumicrate Owlcrate The Bookish Box Fourth Wing was brought up a lot. So you can find more info on the book itself right here. If you want to check out all the absolute madness that happened when it first came out, along with the first run copies that were going for over $500 (you know, the one I could've bought for $15 but I cancelled it..) Then go ahead and check that out right here. Bonus: Here's a really good round up on all the special editions of Fourth Wing that are out there! (For reference, the 3 that I have are the holiday edition, Waterstones', and Fairyloot's) And here is Sara's Fourth Wing collection! Sara mentioned a copy of Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan that she just HAD to have, despite it being in Italian, a language that she does not even SPEAK. If you want to check out La figlia della dea della luna and see if it's worth it, you can do so here. We discussed Sword Catcher by and how superior Illumicrate's version of the book was (the version Sara has) when compared to Fairyloot's version (the one I had). If you want to see the difference, then here is Illumicrate's, and here is Fairyloot's. Here are our Top 5 Books of the Year! After editing the show, I realized that maybe I should've gone with books that actually came out this year, as oppose to books I've read since some are a few years old. But too late now! Here they are, along with the books that we did not like! Sara The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi (by S.A. Chakraborty) Bonesmith (by Nicki Pau Preto) Sword Catcher (by Cassandra Clare) Divine Rivals (by Rebecca Ross) Yellowface (by R.F. Kuang) Silver in the Bone (by Alexandra Bracken) (did not like) Los The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi (by S.A. Chakraborty) (freaking READ IT!) A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking (by T. I love mythology, pretty much any culture has a wealth of colourful stories whether about creation or existence and in the UK we have tales of King Arthur and his round table, of Magic and Merlin, the Lady of the Lake and the legend that Arthur is a once and future King of England who will rise when he is needed. This latest book by author Alexandra Bracken tells a tale of Avalon in the modern day but it is not the Avalon we have heard about...at least not when Hollower Tamsin Lark arrives on a mission to locate a missing powerful ring... Find out what I thought about this book, released on the 4th of April 2023, but you won't hear any spoilers here! Melora, better known as Lore, is that last of the Perseides, an ancient family descended from the great Greek hero Perseus, known for beheading Medusa. She was raised in a culture that participates in the Agon, a god hunt that occurs for seven days every seven years. Back in the day, our boy Zeus banished nine of the gods for crimes against humanity, punishing them by making them mortal during the Agon. Anyone who kills a god, inherits their power and becomes a new god, though there are rules and limitations. At the beginning of the Agon that is this book, the only old gods left are Athena, Artemis, and Hermes. A lot happens in this book, so it's really difficult to summarize in a concise way. Basically, Wrath, the new Ares, is the bad guy and he is searching for Lore for some unknown reason. He's just killing everyone and doesn't care about it. Athena wants to kill all the new gods and teams up with Lore to kill Wrath because Lore thinks Wrath is responsible for her family's death, so she has a motive. It's a quid pro quo… Lore gets her revenge; Athena gets to kill the imposter new gods. How did we feel about the portrayals of the gods that we encountered in this book? How did we feel about the two major twists in the story? How did we feel about the conclusion of the main conflict. Join us as we discuss these questions and more in episode 7 of our spoiler-filled podcast.Questions: Karey came up with these questions.Great music huh?! A world where the only surviving children of a mysterious plague all end up with superpowers, and are thus targeted for extermination, or worse, by the government - it should have been a perfect match-up of the successful YA and Superhero genres. Today my friend Sarah and I are chatting about Lore by Alexandra Bracken! Join us as we chat about this exciting contemporary, urban fantasy based on Greek mythology. We chat about the plot, our favorite characters, how this particular love trope was torturous, hear all my favorite quotes, and more!A little about Lore: For centuries, Zeus has punished the gods with a game called the Agon, which turns them mortal for one week, and at the mercy of being hunted by those with godly ambitions. Only a handful of the original Greek gods remain, the rest replaced by the mortals who killed them and ascended. After her family's sadistic murder by a rival bloodline, Lore escapes and vows to repay her parents' sacrifice by doing one thing - surviving. For seven years, she has pushed back dark thoughts of revenge against the man responsible for their murder, a man by the name of Wrath who has attained unimaginable power. Except for one week, every seven years. A week that is fast approaching ...When Lore comes home on the first night of the Agon to find Athena gravely wounded on her doorstep, the goddess offers her an alliance; they have a mutual enemy, after all. But as the world trembles under the force of Wrath - a god with the power to destroy all of humanity - will Lore's decision to bind her fate with Athena's come back to haunt her?Have a question about Lore? Lore, from the proud House of Perseus, is forced back into the Agon, an experience every 7 years where the Greek Gods are forced into immortality. When she finds a Goddess on her doorstep, she decides to join forces to seek vengeance for injustices done to her. It's a YA whirlwind of action, mythology and a touch of romance. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Are you Green or Orange? We're not quite Red over this listener recommendation (thanks Em!) but both Brenna and Joe find that Bracken's text doesn't fully want to engage with its rebellion or world-building as much as it could (or should?) Instead it's a lot of road trip, with an unconvincing romance and a cliffhanger that suggests we might enjoy the next book in this series more.Alas the film fares worse: despite decent special effects and a more convincing romantic pairing between returning champ Amandla Stenberg and someone named Harris Dickinson (*not a Hemsworth), the film doubles down on the book's least interesting aspects. As it stands, this pairing simply doesn't stand on its own two feet and Stenberg (see previous episodes: Everything, Everything; The Hate U Give, and The Hunger Games) deserves better!Wanna connect with the show? Chelsea and Taryn have loved Greek mythology ever since they read their first Percy Jackson book in elementary school. So, of course, they were excited to read another book that dives into the complexities of the family relationships on Mount Olympus. In this story, Zeus gets frustrated at the other Olympians for interfering too much in human affairs (which is funny coming from him, but whatever). As a result, he curses them to spend one week every seven years on Earth as mortals. But there's a catch… if they are killed by one of the families hunting them, their powers transfer to their killer. This story follows Lore, the last of the Perseus line, as she tries to leave that life behind. Join the hosts as they discuss Bracken's inventive story. This book has everything you could want, romance, violence, betrayal, childhood best friends, and of course, the whole part with the gods in it. You won't want to miss this one! Hey besties! This week I am back with a review of Lore by Alexandra Bracken, one of my favorite reads of the year so far! Follow along as we dive into the Agon, a week long event that happens every seven years where nine Greek gods and goddesses are forced to walk the earth as mortals and be hunted by descendants of well known Greek heroes. During this event we meet a girl named Lore Perseous, who walked away from the Agon seven years ago after her family was murdered and left behind everything she had ever known. She refuses to go back to this life but gets swept up in this world once again when Athena, the goddess of wisdom, shows up on her front steps, mortally wounded and offering her the ability to avenge her family and walk away from the world of the Agon forever. The Odyssey meets The Hunger Games in this story of learning to let go, not be afraid, and trusting in yourself when everything is against you. I also dive into the Greek myth that I thought of while reading the story, the story of Medusa and how she became to be as we know her, and how throughout time how women and men are portrayed differently in Greek hero myths. I found both of these things to be super relevant and give more insight to the historical connotations of the story of Lore Perseous. I also love how Alexandra Bracken gave us the story of a female Greek hero that can revisited over and over again, like the hero stories that came before her's. Thank you so, so, so much for listening and watching! Love you all so much! This week I am heading into mythological territory (yes, again), with the latest novel from American author, Alexandra Bracken. Lore, which was released earlier this year, is a tale of tragedy, discovery and vengeance with the added bonus of the fact it all takes place (pretty much) in modern-day New York. Want to find out more, give this episode a listen now. And no, it's nothing to do with the podcast Lore or the Amazon TV show that spun from it.

Today’s author interview guest is Alexandra Bracken, author of LORE. From the #1 New York Times best-selling...
Drawing on Greek Heritage: Bracken drew on her childhood love of Greek mythology as well as her own Greek heritage and the stories of her immigrant grandparents, to dream up a secret network of ancient families--descendants of Greek heroes--battling for immortality and dominance. Feminist Take on Greek Mythology: This novel turns the misogyny and violence against women running through Greek mythology on its head, reclaiming the hero's journey and reversing our ideas about heroes and monsters. A little romance for the ages: Lore discovers that Castor, the childhood friend she believed was dead, actually ascended as the new Apollo seven years ago. Bracken's mastery of will they/won't they tension is unparalleled (oh but they will).

This week, we welcome back one of our favorite guests: Tom Angleberger! Tom was actually one of our very first guests, WAY BACK on Episode 23. He was also the first guest to come back for a second appearance (with fellow Star Wars authors Alexandra Bracken and Adam Gidwitz on Episode 33). And now he's the first to hit another milestone: the threepeat! On this episode, I'm joined by Meg Humphrey to geek out about Tom's criminally underappreciated The Mighty Chewbacca in the Forest of Fear. And the 10th anniversary of Origami Yoda. And what else he's got up his sleeve. Buckle up!
