Jason and Matthew talk with U2FP Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) Director and Science Writer, Sam Maddox in the first part of our series on Spinal Stimulation. We've been thinking about the need for a discussion on what spinal stimulation is, why it's been studied so extensively, who are the influential scientists and players in the space, the trajectory of where and how it started as an exploration for restoring function in SCI, and - most importantly - what this all means for folks with a spinal cord injury. This conversation is part one of a series that kicks off with some history, background and milestones in the stim field. We will follow up on subsequent podcasts with where it appears to be going, recent advancements in the research, and the various companies working to bring their version of spinal stim to market. If you have not listened to our previous podcasts covering spinal cord stim, check out our interviews with Susie Harkema, Gregoire Courtine, David Darrow, Chet Mortiz, Kendall Lee and Kristin Zhao, and also the interview with the first women to be implanted with epidural stimulators; Kathy Allen and Sandra Mulder. (Visit this episode's webpage for access to all these resource links: https://u2fp.org/get-educated/curecast/episode-71.html) --- Guest Bio: Sam Maddox (of Los Angeles, California) is former Knowledge Manager and spinal cord injury research writer for the Reeve Foundation. He is the author of several books related to chronic health and paralysis, including four editions of the Paralysis Resource Guide, published by the Reeve Foundation. In 1992 Maddox wrote the first comprehensive history of spinal cord injury research, The Quest for Cure: Restoring Function After Spinal Cord Injury. He wrote and published the widely acclaimed resource book Spinal Network, and is founder of New Mobility magazine. Maddox was a panel member on The Consortium for Spinal Cord Medicine, which develops and disseminates evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to professionals and consumers. He is currently writing and producing books as a resource for the newly injured: SCI: First 90 Days. He has been a reporter for many magazines, including Time, Money and People. Maddox is a graduate of the University of Colorado, where he taught in the School of Journalism.

Jason and Matthew interview Dr. Uzma Samadani, a neurosurgeon working in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Samadani participated in the EStand trial (https://www.estand.org/) along with David Darrow, Ann Parr and Taye Nettoff. We decided to interview Dr. Samadani based on her experience of implanting epidural stimulators in people with SCI - as part of her clinical practice - instead of the current approach, which is to limit access to only those enrolled in a relevant clinical trial. We talk about her process for making this decision and its attendant complexities, as well as her experience with the EStand trial. We encourage you to listen back to our interviews with spinal stimulation researchers: - David Darrow (Episode 30) - Susan Harkema (Episode 41) - Gregoire Courtine (Episode 44) - Jason Carmel (Episode 45) - Chet Moritz (Episode 13) - Andre Krossioukov (Episode 26) - Mayo Clinic researchers Kendall Lee, Kristin Zhao and Igor Lavrov (Episode 11) Revisiting these conversations will give you better context and a broader understanding of today's discussion with Dr. Samadani and its implications. Also, please listen to the interview we conducted with SCI community members, Kathy Allen and Sandra Mulder (Episode 31), both participants in the EStand Trial. Lastly, check out our upcoming Science and Advocacy Symposium (register here) which will feature spinal stimulation presentations from Drs. Reggie Edgerton, Susan Harkema and David Darrow.
In 2017, Kathy Allen and her husband Adam Ryan were invited to take part in a new show on Australia's Seven Network called 'Instant Hotel', whereby 10 couples from around the country transformed their homes into short-term accommodation. The couples then stayed together in each of the properties and scored each other according to various criteria, ultimately resulting in an overarching winner being hailed at the end of the series. While Kathy and Adam unfortunately didn't emerge victorious, despite some incredibly positive feedback, the series put their Humpty Doo, Northern Territory holiday property, Tropical Oasis, firmly in the sights of prospective guests the world-over. Since the show aired, they've been consistently booked out and have also added other properties to their short-term accommodation stable, all astutely managed by this very energetic duo.
Episode Notes: One of the greatest honors in a coaches life is to continue a relationship with an athlete they once coached into adulthood. Jamie and I get to sit down with a former Pequot Lakes great, Reid Pierzinski. Jamie was fortunate enough to coach Reid throughout his high school career which culminated with him single handedly winning a Team State Track Championship. Reid is now a "senior" at SDSU where he reflects on coaching, internal motivation, overcoming adversity, and finding his best through intentional living. This one is a gem, Let's Go! Jamie mentioned some of the great people he coached with in his time at Pequot Lakes and Reid discussed how awesome it was to have such an amazing staff. Many, many people contributed to the success that came as a direct result of the combination of people who influenced it. Thank you to Dave Guenther, Jana Lueck, Jeff Brever, Kathy Allen, Bud Bjornaara, Pat Pfeiffer, Brock Spandl, Chip Taylor and the many other volunteers and parents who gave without consideration of what they might get from it. As you will hear, if you make it to the end, perhaps today's very best Valentine's Day gift to your love is to release some of your crap! Why? It's called the "Bending of the Nodes" and it's a very powerful aspect that is worth discussion today. Happy Valentine's Day & I love you for listening!! Feb 14 Transcription [00:00:00] Happy Valentine's day. I love you. I love you for listening. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. And it is February 14 2020. And we have a Valentine's chart that I've been just looking at for most of yesterday, and I'm still like, okay, Thomas, you got to do the podcast, so let's just roll with what's there.[00:00:31] Those of you who caught last Friday's episode, if you remember, I said that the moon was trying Venus and that it looked like it almost was a better Valentine's astrological chart than what this one was going to be. And for those of you who might have taken advantage of that and done something with your special love on last Friday.[00:00:53] You might've been a winner because the more I'm looking at this chart, the more I'm just agreeing with myself that, wow, this thing is a difficult chart for Valentine's day, especially when it comes to the topic of love. So I thought what we would do is pick apart why. And with this, we're going to go on somewhat of a deep dive into astrology because there's this concept that most astrologers just don't talk about.[00:01:20] And what it is, and this is exactly where Venus is today. I'm sorry, I, you know, as they say, I can't make this stuff up. This is where, this is where it fell. Venus is in Aries at seven degrees. Now, right there, and we've talked about this. Venus is in detriment in Aries because Libra is the opposite sign on the chart from Aries.[00:01:47] And Venus rules Libra. Therefore, when it comes over all the way around the chart to that's opposite. It ain't happy. So mama ain't happy. Number one. Number two, [00:02:00] the North and South nodes of the moon are at seven degrees, cancer and Capricorn respectively. Seven, seven, seven. Okay, so Venus is at an exact square to the nodes of the moon.[00:02:16] And this is what I don't hear a lot of people talking about is called, technically it's called the bend of the nodes or the bending of the nodes and what you do. So here's an astrology thing that if even if you have not used this technique in your own practice of astrology or your own observations of astrology, it's one worth noting.[00:02:38] There are only a couple of articles about it. astro.com has one and it quotes. A couple of articles that were published in the mountain astrologer written by Cathy Allen, and they described the bending of the nodes, and Kathy Allen evidently is the one writer out there with exposure who has the most information on this.[00:03:04] But basically there's the North and South bending of the node. Now, how do you calculate whether it's the North or South? So you find the North node, okay. For our example is in cancer, and then you find the planet or planets that are at a square, and in some rare cases you'll have a square on one side of the axis and a square on the other side of the axis.[00:03:30] So it creates a grand cross. Involving bending of the nodes. How about that? Okay, so just think about this. There's a UN opposition always. The North and South nodes are always 180 degrees opposite each other. Now what we're doing is we're just, so, there's a line, right? You always can draw a line in the chart of that opposition, so to determine which side of that line it's on, you start with the North node.[00:03:58] And you go [00:04:00] clockwise. Okay, so let's make this visual. Think of the North node up at the 12 o'clock position on the clock face. That means the South node is down at six o'clock so if you go clockwise and you come to three o'clock and you see a planet there that is called the South bending of the node.[00:04:22] If you go around on down to six o'clock there's the South node. And you come across to nine o'clock that planet is considered the North bending of the node. Today's Venus is at the three o'clock position or the South bending of the node. So I'm going to reference this article because it puts this information quite clearly.[00:04:44] It says planets at the South bending are related in meaning to the South node. That is, they signify a point of release. The South node is all about us letting go of things right. Letting go of our past accumulated karma. So this says experiences are internal and have difficulty being expressed outwardly.[00:05:06] The South bending implies a sacrifice or an offering of some kind. Planets here have difficulty in outer expression and are best used subjectively, spiritually, or given away to the collective. Well, great. Hey, like I said, I didn't create it. I'm just the reporter. So how do you play this Valentine's day?[00:05:32] Well, for one, if you acknowledge that Venus is in Aries, that means fire energy. That means it's hot. There is that element and it is present. So it could be a really good Valentine's day if you choose to just adopt that viewpoint. Hey, it's Mars, it's fire, it's Aires. Let's roll. Now, here's where you guys are going to laugh at me [00:06:00] in that moment of passion.[00:06:02] If your partner happens to bring up something about your karmic past,[00:06:10] deal with it, just deal with it. That's your Valentine's presence. Say, look, since you brought it up, here I am. I'm going to deal with it right here and now I'm going to release it.[00:06:25] Probably the best Valentine's gift you could give your partner today is releasing some of your crap. That's the way to, that's the way the chart looks. I'll see you tomorrow. Have a good one. We got mercury retrograde countdown from here on out and that Sunday evening, so we will definitely do podcasts over the weekend.[00:06:43] Have a happy Valentine's day. I love you for listening. Bye bye. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Matthew and Kate talk with Kathy Allen and Sandra Mulder, the first two participants in the EStand Trial in Minnesota. Kathy and Sandra (as well as Jered Chinook who participated in the Mayo Clinic’s Epidural Stimulation study) were invited to attend the American Spinal Injury Association Conference in April to share their personal experiences as part of a conversation facilitated by U2FP’s Executive Director, Matthew Rodreick. We thought it would be helpful to hear from them directly on the podcast. We talk about their early experiences in the trial, where they are now, and what they continue to experience. It’s a nice follow up to the Epsiode #30 interview with Dr. David Darrow, the principal investigator of the EStand trial. If you haven’t listened to that one, check it out to fill in all the information.
