Abortion has been the number one topic for campaign ads this year, so we're talking with veteran ad maker https://twitter.com/kgslive (Kelly Grace Gibson), the founder of the women-led https://www.strongerthancomms.com/ (Stronger Than Comms), about how Democrats are pressing their advantage on this week's edition of The Downballot. Gibson walks us through the nuts and bolts of how ads actually get made; how Democrats have shown unusual message discipline on abortion while simultaneously tailoring their messages to different audiences; and why she has hope for some progressive candidates and ballot measures even in difficult states. Co-hosts David Nir and David Beard also get medieval on the traditional media for its appalling display of ableism in the wake of John Fetterman's recent NBC interview; recap the absolutely wild goings-on in Los Angeles, where City Council President Nury Martinez just resigned after a racist tirade was caught on tape; dive into the unexpectedly close race for governor in Oklahoma; and highlight https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2022/10/6/2125063/-The-Daily-Kos-Elections-guide-to-media-markets-and-congressional-districts-for-the-new-2022-maps (a brand-new database from Daily Kos Elections) showing how media markets and congressional districts overlap. Take a look around our historic city with the amazing Tours of Tulsa. Tulsa looks awesome on Tours of Tulsa! I'm excited to talk with Kelly and learn all about the amazing things they do down here, and I mean down here, in an underground tunnel. Recently, our team did a little tour, and we had the best time in downtown Tulsa. We wanted to talk to Kelly so that she could share what they do here. How'd you start this business? Tell us all about it. My name is Kelly Gibson, and I've been touring in town now for 15 years. I have not always had the pleasure of owning my business, but it was in 2013 that I was fortunate enough to buy the tour company. Then I hired and trained six tour guides that work for me. We're doing all types of tours on a daily basis. This city is so rich in history; we have beautiful history in Tulsa. We also have history that's not beautiful, but it's our responsibility to tell all of it because our history is who we are in Tulsa. What are some of the most popular, or your favorite, buildings or things to feature on the tours? Our most popular, most requested tour happens to be a walking historical art deco tunnel tour. A lot of people think we're just going to be walking through the bowels of downtown Tulsa, but that tour is rich with history and many stories. We love that tour, and it lasts for an hour. However, if you'd like an hour and a half or even two hours, we can walk for that long. “Our history is who we are in Tulsa.” I sure hope that so many other people can experience your tours. What's the best way that people can find out more? You can email us at kelly.gibson@toursoftulsa.com, give us a call at (918) 625-4909, and we have a website as well. All of our tours are private, so you can choose your best day and time and let us know how long you'd like to go. Typically, the way that we charge for our tours is $80 per hour, but that's not per person. That rate is good for one to 10 people on walking tours. If you have more than 10 people, we have additional guides so we can have multiple groups going at the same time. Everyone can start and end at the same time, just in smaller groups. I love it so much; I know we'll be looking to set up another tour here soon. Thanks to Kelly for sharing her stories! It's so fun to learn. Their biggest goal at the end of each tour is that people will have a brand-new appreciation of the city of Tulsa. Don't forget to book your tours, and let us know if you need anything. Just call or email us. We'd be happy to help!

Good morning and welcome to Montrose Fresh, from The Montrose Daily Press. It's Wednesday July 28th and we're here to bring you a closer look at our top stories, events and more that matter to us here in Western Colorado. Today - Following months of hammering out details and anticipation, Colorado Yurt Company broke ground on its new headquarters last week. Today's episode is brought to you by Elevate Internet. Whether it's for your home or your business they offer the best speeds at the best price. Right now, if you refer a friend you can get $25 off! Give them a call for more information at 844-386-8744 or visit them at elevateinternet.com. Now, our feature story. Following months of hammering out details and anticipation, Colorado Yurt Company broke ground on its new headquarters during a brief public ceremony Thursday. This marked the start of a near-yearlong process to build out the massive project. It'll be a 30,000-square foot manufacturing and office space building on nearly 3.4 acres. This will include a display village along the south end of the river trail. It'll also include a public/private restroom on the north end in partnership with the City of Montrose. Colorado Yurt owners John and Kelly Gibson were joined in attendance by Mayfly Outdoors Founder David Dragoo, city staff and members of Montrose City Council, dozens of Colorado Yurt employees and other community leaders. Also in attendance were Dan and Emma Kigar, who founded Colorado Yurt in 1976. The Kigars sold the company to the Gibsons in January of 2020. They explained that this was always their vision and they're thrilled to see it all coming together. Gibson in April reported Colorado Yurt's first quarter sales were 56% above target projections. That followed a 2020 cycle where sales were up 45%. The Gibsons have added 27 different employees in 18 months, and could add even more once the project is finalized. Mayfly Outdoors Founder, Dragoo said the project's proximity to the River and walking path is a huge bonus. The project should be completed for Memorial Day in 2022. Colorado Yurt is planning a grand opening during that weekend. To learn more about this story visit our full story at montrosepress.com Next, The day has come. The Blue Mesa Reservoir will contribute water to keep the hydropower turbines at Lake Powell operational. This move is called for under the Upper Basin Drought Response Operations Agreement. State Representative Marc Catlin of Montrose explained that this is a drastic time. Catlin, a lifelong water expert, also sits on the Colorado River District Board of Directors, representing Montrose County. The district was formed in the 1930s to protect the Colorado River. Now, because of the drought conditions, the water surface level at Lake Powell is taking a record plunge to below 3,555 feet. The massive reservoir has lost 16 million acre feet of water since 1999, enough to service 64 million households a year. River district representatives met with the Department of the Interior last week to discuss how drought response operations will proceed. But Catlin reiterated the drawdown is necessary under the current agreement. He also noted that Blue Mesa did bail out the Gunnison Basin in parched years like 2002, but this is different. He isn't confident whether climate change is the issue, but said the soil moisture content of Upper Basin states is critically dry. Add to the mix a predicted La Niña pattern for winter, and the southwestern part of the state will miss out on the bulk of whatever snow does come to call. But for now, Blue Mesa is serving its purposes. That's all for today, thank you for listening! For more information on any of these stories visit us at montrosepress.com. Welcome to Montrose Fresh, from The Montrose Daily Press. It's FridayMarch 5th, and we're here with local news, events, announcements, jobs, and more that matter to us here in Western Colorado. Today - On Monday the owners of the Colorado Yurt Company presented a proposal to Montrose City Council. Their goal is to build a 30,0000-square foot manufacturing and office space on over 3 acres of Colorado Outdoors. Today's episode is brought to you by Elevate Internet. John and Kelly Gibson, the owners of the Colorado Yurt Company, are ready to expand into something bigger. On Monday the Gibsons presented a proposal to Montrose City Council. They're hoping to build a 30,0000-square foot manufacturing and office space on over 3 acres of Colorado Outdoors. The project would break ground this summer. In Monday's meeting John Gibson explained how business has gone during the pandemic. The project would create new jobs over the next three years, including five jobs with a salary of $70,000. The cost of the development is a projected $7.2 million. The Gibsons are seeking the help from the city in the form of incentives like building permit fee waivers, marketing assistance, and water and sewer connection fee abatements. For now, City Manager Bill Bell said the city is working with the company and its contractor to lower costs before city council formally votes on any incentive package. There's excitement among Colorado Yurt employees about the potential project. The project provides a path for more growth in the outdoor and recreation industries. Mayor Barbara Bynum said that supporting a local business that is looking at expanding not just a little, but a lot is great to see. Mayfly Outdoors Founder David Dragoo told the Montrose Daily Press that he thinks it'll be a tremendous asset for the community. The proposal of the project comes as Colorado Yurt Company experienced a successful 2020. The company's total sales for the year were up 45%. In the past year, the industry itself has thrived. Multiple Montrose-based outdoor companies reported seeing an uptick in interest among outdoor activity. To stay up to date on this story, or read more, visit us at Montrosepress.com. The Richard Fitzgerald Award for Excellence in Forest Management was recently presented to Amy Lockner, an entomologist from the USDA Forest Service's Rocky Mountain Region. Lockner was acknowledged for her work on the Wilder and Gunnison-Highlands project. The award is a traveling trophy that will spend the next year in Gunnison in her honor. The Fitzgerald Award was established back in 2018. Richard Fitzgerald was one of the longest serving employees in agency history. Lockner is the third person to receive the award. Matt McCombs the Gunnison District Ranger said that Amy's knowledge and passion is fused with a deep commitment to the health of America's forests. He noted he's thrilled she's being properly recognized for her efforts. That's all for today, thank you for listening! For more information on any of these stories visit us at montrosepress.com.
