The Geisel School of Medicine's Media and Health Behaviors Lab conducts ongoing studies about how kids react to media and other stimuli. The lab's co-directors talk about two such studies.

Sociologist John Carroll unpacks the ongoing appeal of the Harry Potter series. ------- Nearly a quarter of a century after the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, J. K. Rowling's story of the “boy who lived” continues to capture the imaginations of children - and adults.  The Harry Potter effect, it's claimed, got kids reading again, got kids' books selling at greater volumes, and made it possible for writers to produce longer novels for younger readers.  John Carroll, Emeritus Professor of sociology at La Trobe University, makes a bigger claim: that Harry Potter makes Rowling the greatest contributor to the public good of the last 20 years.  In this episode, he makes his case to Simon Smart. This conversation is for you if you're a Harry Potter fan - but also if you're not! It ranges from the materialism of our age and our death avoidance to the difference between a hero and a saviour, the importance of vocation, and our deep desire to live in an enchanted world. “That's quite explicit in the Harry Potter books. I mean, the ordinary people, everyone knows, are called Muggles, and they're mugs. Their lives are boring. Harry's forced adopted family for the first 11 years of his life is terrified by basically the meaningless of its own existence. And in a sense, I think what's going on here is a warning to children: adulthood is at risk of being just like that, beware! Rupeena Purewal says when the coronavirus infects children, their bodies react differently than those of adults. She's leading the only Saskatchewan-based clinical trials of human convalescent plasma on children sick enough to be admitted to hospital. So far, there aren't many children with Covid-19 in hospital, but with the cold weather come higher infection rates, and the risk of other serious respiratory infections. And, as she learns more about the coronavirus' asymptomatic spread, Dr. Purewal warns parents they cannot afford to keep skipping routine vaccinations or check-ups for their kids.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Paris Smith. Smith started her professional career with theater, having graced the stage in renditions of popular productions such as “Wizard of Oz,” “Hello Dolly,” “Sound of Music,” and “Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat.”  At first she appeared on the small screen in a variety of commercials and moved on to film where she shared the silver screen with Chris Evans and Vinessa Shaw in the feature film “Puncture.” She made the move to Los Angeles in 2011, and soon after booked a guest-starring role on “Modern Family” where she played ‘Becca' Luke's (Nolan Gould) love interest, in addition to a recurring role on the Emmy award winning YouTube series “Kids React.” Smith won the 2013 Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a Short Film – Young Actress 11-12 for her work in “Scouted.” She was also nominated for Best Performance in a TV Series – Guest Starring Young Actress 11-13 for her work in “Modern Family.” In addition to acting, Smith writes and performs her own original music.
