Because this is our last "County Episode" for a while, what with next Monday seeing the start of our month-long Haunting Season of spooky content, for this week's episode we've pulled out all the stops, going a bit bonkers for the half-forgotten history and folklore of Westmoreland! We start off chatting about various Harvest Fair traditions, including beliefs about Michaelmas, "Lawless Hours" and the delightfully anarchic Kidderminster Fray - after which we wend our way to Westmoreland.Aside from chatting about some of the county's history, including its flooded Corpse Road, the Romantic 'Lake Poets' who called it home, and sites like Kendal, Grasmere, Appleby and Lake Windermere, Martin throws the sweet and savoury together for this week's County Dish, with delights including Westmoreland Sweet Lamb Pie and the county's traditional Pepper Cake! When it comes to folklore, interspersed with some excerpts from next Saturday's Local Legends interview with the one and only TAFFY THOMAS!!!! (yes, you read that correctly) England's first-ever Storytelling Laureate who shares two tales in just this episode, we talk about Westmoreland's murderous giant Girt Will, Mary Baines the Witch of Tebay, the Curse of Levens Hall, and much more besides. Then it's on to the main event: Martin's take on "The Somnambulist" which draws together William Wordsworth, the legend of Aira Force, elves, dragons, questing knights, and a healthy dose of the supernatural...We really hope you enjoy the episode, and we'll be back on Thursday with a new Something Wicked bonus episode about the glamorous 17th century mass murderess La Quintrala ahead of Saturday's full Local Legends chat with Taffy, and the launch of Haunting Season 2024 next Monday! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Then we get stuck into some folklore! From the absolutely ridiculous cryptid 'The Cumbrian Dregpike" to the Hob Thross, the magical armband of St Bega to the county's many 'Lucks', there's loads to chat about, plus some excerpts from next Saturday's Local Legends interview with the lovely Stephen G. Reports that Labour are set to bar Diane Abbott from standing in the general election have sparked outrage, with the veteran MP accusing Keir Starmer of purging the party's left wing and alienating voters.  But is the Labour leader and his inner circle willing to lose left-wing voters, if it means they can concentrate on winning over disaffected Conservatives and bringing back Labour supporters who were put off by Jeremy Corbyn? This week, Rishi Sunak has made a slew of policy announcements - national service for teenagers, cutting so-called “Mickey Mouse” university courses, and a tax giveaway for pensioners - this has left many wondering if the Tories have totally given up on young voters. Meanwhile, Liberal Democrats leader Ed Davey was pictured falling - or jumping - off a paddleboard in Lake Windermere, but can the party make a splash across the country or is it just about a few target seats? In this episode of The Political Fourcast, Krishnan Guru-Murthy talks about all this with the Liberal Democrats' deputy leader Daisy Cooper, former Conservative Universities minister, Lord Johnson, and Meg Hillier, who was Labour Chair of Parliament's Public Accounts Committee and has been the MP in Diane Abbott's neighbouring constituency for 20 years. Produced by Calum Fraser, Silvia Maresca, Shaheen Sattar, Rob Thompson and Nick Jackson.

How do we say ‘yes' to life, without saying ‘no' to death? How do we “rise to the occasion” and “wrestle something good” from the heartbreak of a terminal diagnosis? What does it look like to “become familiar with grief and uncertainty in intimate ways”? Today's virtual fire-side conversation about being human and being alive is with Duncan Passmore - husband, father, writer, and woodworker of 20 years - as he shares his story and the story of his son, Torin, diagnosed at a young age with Pearson syndrome, a rare and incurable mitochondrial disorder. It's a story of life and death, grief and beauty; punctuated with the power of story, the mystery of ceremony, the practice of craft and community… and the building of boats. It's also a way of inviting you, if you feel able and called to, to weave into the community Torin has inspired and contribute to Duncan's family's GoFundMe; raising the funds to support them spending six months with Torin's presence and his memory as they build a boat and sail it on Lake Windermere - a request of Torin's he didn't live to see fulfilled. As someone grappling in my own ways (as most of us are) with fears, griefs, and the way life laughs at plans; as someone who believes in the power of community, of cultures devoted to full-spectrum aliveness, mystery, story, and ceremony; this feels like a deeply worthy story to share and a deeply worthy endeavor to support. Join us around the fire? You're most welcome here. May we shed the armor which keeps us trying to hold off what is. May we become vulnerable enough and brave enough to share our stories so community might find us and, when the time comes, hold us. May we use our hands and heart to craft beauty from grief so we might fully embody at least some small part of what it seems to mean to be human and to be alive. May Torin's presence and memory live on through the ripples of his story and the way it disarms us and invites us to rise to the occasion of our own lives. You can find out more about the project and become a part of the prayerful building of the boat through Duncan's GoFundMe: https://gofund.me/9983ec87 Please also consider sharing the GoFundMe so we can continue casting the net wider and weaving more people into this story. They're at 50% as of the recording/ publishing of this episode and have until June 9th to make it the rest of the way. P.S. My Zoom seems to have finally caught up to the version with the floating reaction videos - so please excuse the random thumbs up and balloons which seem to pop up at strange and slightly inappropriate times. _____________________ And if you've come for Duncan, I hope you'll stick around for more conversations to access, repair, inspire, and evolve our humanity and serve the wild, tender aliveness of our personal and collective hearts. It's very kind of you to invite me on. Jenny Wheeler: You've been writing very successfully fiction for a number of years now, but you did have a very successful entrepreneurial career and it is a later in life thing for you. Tell us how you got into the writing T.A. Williams: To be honest, my first ever attempt at a book was at age 14. It was called it was a shameless rip off of Arthur Ransom's story, set up on Lake Windermere, Swallows and Amazons. That obviously didn't get very far, all 44 handwritten pages of it. But in my twenties, I wrote a thriller - I was quite into thrillers in those days. And I still have a letter from Collins publishers before they became Harper Collins, where they actually read the manuscript that I sent them twice, and then came this letter saying, “We liked it a lot, but due to the parlous economic situation in the country at the moment, we can't splash out on a new author.” So that rather shot that one. So yes, had that all worked, then back in the seventies, I might have been a published author. As it is. I had to wait until 2013, 10 years ago. A medieval trilogy which captivated him Jenny Wheeler: Did you continue to write in that interim? T.A. Williams: I wrote another couple of thrillers. They are just sitting there, gathering dust. But I got hooked, to be quite honest, on medieval history. And I wrote a series of three books set around the time of the Crusades. And then - I don't know if you've come across people called the Cathars in southern France. They were basically a Christian sect, but they were deemed heretical by the Pope at the time, mainly because they weren't prepared to pay their subs to Rome. And as a result of which, he sent a crusade against them. It was the only crusade called by Christians on Christians in Western Europe. I got hooked on that, and wrote the books. Needless to say, nobody wanted to publish them, and it was over the course of years that I gradually changed from that to...

We are delighted to bring you a new podcast with Karina Urbach, author of Alice's Book: How the Nazis Stole My Grandmother's Cookbook. It tells the remarkable story of her Jewish grandmother, whose bestselling Viennese cookbook was expropriated by the Nazis after the Anschluss in 1938 and republished – for decades - under a false Aryan name. Dr. Urbach is an historian at the University of London; her book is expertly researched, using international archives, family papers, interviews, etc and has an extraordinary range – from Shanghai in the 1930s to Dachau, Vienna to Lake Windermere, the Kindertransport, the US intelligences services, publishing protocols under the Nuremberg laws, emigration and the creation of new lives in new worlds. For this week's episode of The English Wine Diaries,  I have not one but two guests joining me. Kit Ellen started his wine journey over 20 years ago when he joined the Majestic Wine graduate scheme, where he won the prestigious Gonzalez Be-ass Scholarship before moving to Free Run Wines, where he focussed on supplying grower Champagnes and sparkling wines to the UK market. It was a natural path into the world of English wine and today he is the Managing Director at Exton Park vineyard in Hampshire. My second guest is Charles Carron Brown, who is otherwise known as The Natural Sommelier. Charles is Head Sommelier of chef Simon Rogan's Henrock restaurant, which sits in a beautiful location overlooking Lake Windermere and is one of only a handful of restaurants in that is serving Exton Park's exciting new range of Reserve Blend wines. We talk about the relaunch of Exton Park and its library of reserve wines, vintage versus non-vintage, sustainability in winemaking and the multiple different entries into the wine industry. You can taste Exton Park's Reserve Blend wines by ordering at extonparkvineyard.com or visiting one of Simon Rogan's restaurants. Keep up to date with the goings on at Exton Park by following @extonparkvineyard on Instagram and you can follow Charles @thenaturalsommelier.   Welcome to episode 79 of The All Seeing Guys and it's a special one! Greg and Joe head North to the Lake District with the whole gang Ed, Sarah, Lizzie and Indiana. We catch up with two of our friends Dan and Stuart and spend a few days loving Lake Windermere.  The reason we are at Lake Windermere? Greg and Dan are running the Lake Windermere Marathon. Joe takes control of the Zoom Mic and chats to Greg before and after the run. Joe and the gang also fill in the gaps as Greg and Dan are busy running 26.2 miles by chatting and encouraging the other runners in their own special way.     A really fun and unique episode of the show, one you won't want to miss.  This episode is brought to by Sudio. Currently, the headphones market can offer you one of two things: style or tech. Fashionable headphones tend to lack the proper sound quality, and high-tech variations are bulky and not design oriented. Sudio want to bridge that gap. While emphasising their modern, Scandinavian design. Use the discount code ALLSEEING to receive 15% off any purchase https://goo.gl/amiUvA
