Innovation comes in many areas and compliance professionals need to not only be ready for it but embrace it. One of those areas is telehealth and telemedicine. My guest in this episode is Dr. Laura Purdy, a true evangelist for both telehealth and telemedicine. Telemedicine in the Army has become crucial in providing healthcare to remote and deployed soldiers. Dr. Laura Purdy, a family medicine physician with a military background, has been at the forefront of this innovation. Telemedicine allows doctors to provide care remotely, improving access to healthcare in rural areas with limited services. However, the insurance industry's lack of understanding hinders acceptance of telemedicine. Dr. Purdy encourages patients to try telemedicine, especially cash pay services, for more control over their healthcare choices. Scaling up a telehealth company requires careful consideration of being cash pay or accepting insurance. Regulatory challenges in telehealth include physician licensing, state laws, legal standards, and controlled substances. The future of telemedicine involves seamless integration of virtual and in-person care. Dr. Purdy's company, AfD Health System, aims to provide accessible care and educational content through Instagram and a developing website. Overall, telemedicine has the potential to revolutionize healthcare delivery, but it requires greater acceptance, understanding, and comprehensive regulation. I loved this discussion with Dr Laura Purdy about all things healthcare, entrepreneurialism and the US military... we had a real talk where healthcare concerns get addressed and we ventured into our ideals on how to level the playing field. Dr. Laura Purdy, also known as 'America's Favorite Doctor', is a highly respected physician, consultant, and telehealth pioneer with a decade of experience. She served as a physician in the US Army for 14 years before taking her career to the next level through medical entrepreneurship. She was on the forefront of the telehealth field, pioneering digital healthcare years before the pandemic to ensure equal access for all Americans. As a doctor, veteran, entrepreneur, and mom, Dr. Purdy is eager to challenge "old school" perceptions of healthcare and rethink the experience for patients and physicians alike.
Green noise is a frequency of white noise. It reminds people of nature more than other frequencies (hence the description “green noise”). White noise, more broadly, contains all frequencies found in the spectrum of sounds that you can possibly hear, with equal parts of each, WebMD reports. White noise typically sounds like an air conditioner, vacuum, fan, or even an airplane engine, while green noise, a type of white noise, might remind you a bit more of soothing nature sounds from wind to water. Green noise is around a frequency of 500 Hz, Huffington Post reports. Brown noise has a lower, deeper vibe, though it still contains every frequency like white noise. The New York Times describes it as soothing, steady, and rumbly, and notes that it made waves in online ADHD communities in 2022. Psychologist and primary care physician Dr. Laura Purdy explains green noise as “ambient noise in nature, so some people do find it more soothing than brown noise.” She adds that it sounds distinct from other colors of noise, and is therefore more relaxing for troubled sleepers. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rainmancj/support
The CE experience for this Podcast is powered by CMEfy - click here to reflect and earn credits: https://earnc.me/b7n7X7 Dr. Purdy's interest in helping people drew her out of a lucrative professional career as a performing pianist to earn a BA in Psychology (Magna Cum Laude) from Ball State University and then attend medical school at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Graduating from family medicine residency at Georgia's Martin Army Hospital, she began 14 years of service as a US Army physician, caring for men and women from all over the country undergoing basic training, airborne school, ranger school, and soldiers on post. During that time, she delivered hundreds of babies and treated hundreds of soldiers on the ground. She then relocated to North Carolina to serve as Battalion Surgeon, where she first practiced telemedicine while overseeing the care of special operations combat medics deployed to Africa. This experience prepared her for the med/peds hospitalist role at the Fort Campbell, Kentucky Army Hospital. She then went on to help build the Army's extensive telemedicine networks before doing the same for dozens of private virtual health companies. Upon leaving the military, Dr. Purdy discovered her passion for ensuring equal access to quality healthcare for everyone in America. She immersed herself in the digital healthcare industry, seeing over 20,000 virtual patients as the first full-time telemedicine physician and Medical Director for MDLIVE. This led to a key role in bringing virtual treatment to COVID-19 pandemic patients and those in the Ukraine war zone. Now, Dr. Purdy is a sought-after digital medicine expert serving as Medical Director/Co-Founder and advisor for more than 50 leading telehealth providers, including Hims and Hers, Wisp, Rise Medical, OpenLoop, and MDintegrations - a telehealth company designed to deliver care for health tech startups across North America. Dr. Purdy resides in Nashville, Tennessee with her husband of 10 years, juggling a busy “mompreneur” life with four kids under the age of 10! At the young age of 38, the well-deserved title of “America's Doctor” has been awarded to her by colleagues across the nation. Fueled by a passion and drive to help as many people as she can, Dr. Laura Purdy uses her role as a C-Suite executive to carry out a vision of establishing the most advanced telehealth systems. Bringing together the greatest minds in medicine, she seeks to help millions of people using the best that technology has to offer. Dr. Luara Purdy goes over what we know at this point about Damar Hamlin and the importance of accurate medical history. Dr. Purdy, what do we know at this point about Damar Hamlin? Has a background of sickle cell trait Almost no commentary of known information about his heart. He suffered sudden cardiac death and was resuscitated Usually, the athlete has something leading up to an episode with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy Underwent induced hyperthermia and was put into a coma If there are not any problematic findings he could be cleared to play again and perform rehab. Any inaccurate info out there we can help correct? COVID virus and vaccine - causes mild carditis COVID is not the only virus or vaccine that causes this. The heart is a muscle and our bodies are filled with muscles from head-to-toe Most viruses cause inflammation of muscles. The flu makes your whole body hurt…muscles. Myocarditis hurts every time your heart beats A colleague had a kid turn in a physical without documentation of being insulin dependent. What are your thoughts? This is so dangerous - everyone involved needs to be aware and know how to deal with the possible complications. They need to have insulin available and food available all the time. WE WAN YOU TO PLAY…safely Dr. Purdy, what are some non-reported medical conditions that cause problems? Asthma Anaphylaxis Any history of previous injury Head injuries Vision Discuss the sports physical versus a routine / developmental physical. Most athletes are going to feel healthy A routine annual physical is designed to take a look at your health head to toe and risk factors. We have limited time with them during this. By having a sports physical we give two opportunities for the doctor to see the patient. And the sports physical would be scheduled for more time. Telehealth - The physical exam would change the outcome We do have smart stethoscopes but we are not there yet. Still get your sports physical in person if at all possible Offload the other visits to telehealth and free up the doctor for more in-person time Athletic Trainers are the first line of defense in protecting the athletes. If you see something please say something. Dr. Laura Purdy -
Change is not something that people like, but we need- and this is the focus of what Laura Purdy, MD is driven in. Licensed in all 50 states plus DC and known as America's Doctor, Dr. Laura Purdy, MD is a board-certified Family Medicine Physician who has been featured in Vogue, on Fox News, ABC, NBC, and NPR (among others) as the nation's leading authority and thought leader on the future of digital healthcare. Dr. Purdys in-depth digital health expertise comes from more than a decade spent providing and directing primary care for hundreds of thousands of patients of all ages and all walks of life. What is Dr. Purdy's perception and experience in Telehealth and the future of Medical Technology? "The future of medical technology is looking brighter than ever. With the advent of the pandemic, governments around the world have had to adjust their laws and regulations to allow for the use of telemedicine. This has opened the door for a whole new world of possibilities in the medical industry”. Telemedicine, according to Dr. Purdy, has been around for some time, but the technology has only recently become advanced enough to make it a viable option for medical care. The quality of internet connections and devices have improved drastically, making it easier for doctors and patients to connect. This has allowed for a more efficient and accurate way of delivering care. The obstacle on government laws, regulations and health insurance on telemedicine Dr. Purdy says “The laws and regulations surrounding telemedicine have been slow to catch up with the technology; however, in some states, telemedicine is still illegal, and doctors can even face criminal charges for using it.” This has been a major obstacle to the growth of telemedicine, but it is slowly beginning to change. As more people become aware of the benefits of telemedicine, the laws are slowly being adjusted to accommodate it. The future of medical technology also includes the use of alternative forms of medicine. This includes naturopathic, homeopathic, and holistic medicine. These forms of medicine have been around for some time, but have not been given the same attention or research as traditional allopathic medicine. Currently, many insurance companies are slow to reimburse for telehealth visits, which can be a major barrier to access for patients. Governments should work to ensure that insurance companies are reimbursing providers for telehealth visits at the same rate as they would for in-person visits and should work to ensure that all states are equally open to telehealth, so that all patients have access to the same quality of care. Finally, governments should work to ensure that telehealth services are available to all patients, regardless of their location. Overall, it is important for governments to step in and regulate the telehealth industry to ensure that patients are receiving quality care and that providers are operating within the bounds of the law.” The future of medical technology This is beginning to change as more people are becoming aware of the benefits of these forms of medicine. The future of medical technology is looking bright. With the right laws and regulations in place, telemedicine can become a viable option for medical care that can provide access to care for those who may not be able to access it otherwise, and it can open up the door to alternative forms of medicine. With the right incentives in place, the future of medical technology is sure to be a bright one. In this podcast you will learn: Balancing work as both a doctor and an entrepreneur The benefits of telehealth Career opportunities available with virtual health Risks associated with breaking out of the traditional medical career path And so much more. Laura Purdy feels telehealth and digital health are the progression and future of healthcare. She sees healthcare as following the way the banking industry has evolved – we do almost everything remotely, rarely go to the bank and when we do its' an inconvenience. If healthcare follows that trend, as technology is developed and adoption increases, it will get to the point where the first thing we think about in getting care is how do we do it digitally! After fourteen years as a military physician, Laura comes across circumstances every day where she finds herself reflecting back to people she knew, positions she had, decisions she needed to make, life lessons learned and the values of the military. She feels her military experience has had a tremendous positive impact on everything she does. In this podcast:Laura talks about some of the challenges life in the military can bringMaking he transition from military physician to telehealth entrepreneurThe future of telehealth.

On this episode, we speak to an incredibly inspiring physician, Dr. Laura Purdy. Dr. Purdy is the COO and Co-Founder of MD Integrations. She is a board-certified family medicine physician and spent many years working in the U.S. Army. Dr. Purdy chats with us about her journey through medicine and her passion for digital health. To date, Dr. Purdy has co-founded two telehealth companies and is now lobbying at the federal level to influence change, increase access to care, and reduce disparities in telehealth. Laura Purdy was an active-duty Physician prior to entering the civilian sector. She joined the military because of her sense of patriotism, and because she wanted to focus on patient-care. When she joined in 2005, the Army allowed physicians to just be physicians, and focus on their medical skills before all else. As that culture shifted, Laura decided to leave when her contract ended and explore new opportunities. Towards the end of her time in the service, Laura began exploring the telemedicine space, and has worked with/for dozens of companies across the industry. We discussed Laura's belief that 20 years from now, virtual care will be commonplace in every household. Her hope is to help enable that success at the policy and company level. We touched on how allowing clinicians (as is the case in the military) to practice to a higher scope of licensure would solve many of the problems of access that we face in the U.S. today. When I asked why that doesn't happen, I got an interesting answer: Laura believes that healthcare is too arrogant. The archaic notion that the only people capable of delivering healthcare safely and well is doctors is, in Laura's mind, dead wrong. “As an industry, we need to check our egos at the door - all clinicians have the same goal, which is to work on solutions and to do it safely and responsibly as a team.”Laura believes that there are many situations where clinicians don't really need to see a patient in person, just as you don't need to see a bank teller every time you need to do a bank transaction. We discussed that over the last few years, regulators have realized that tele-health is not going away and that there is a need to embrace technology and the development of new ways to create doctor/patient relationships. In the last part of our conversation, we discussed Open loop, where Laura serves as the Chief Medical Officer. Open Loop is a fully staffed telemedicine operation that encompasses staffing, execution, revenue management and reimbursement. In short, a total telehealth medical experience. When I asked Laura what she would talk about if she had 60 seconds with President Biden, she did something unexpected. She told me that Instead of just telling him, she would ask him to tell her what he wants to improve in our healthcare system, and that she could then tell him how tele-health will help achieve his goals and initiatives. In dozens of interviews, nobody ever answered that question by suggesting that they would ask a question, instead of just prescribe a cure. The humility to lead with a question is something that we need more of - check out this episode and learn more about Dr. Purdy. You can connect with Dr. Purdy on Twitter or Linkedin.

Why Listen: Well, my guest today, Dr. Laura Purdy not only served in the US Army for 14 years as a family physician. But she's also has been a military spouse for a very long time. We talked about a lot of topics on the show that we've never talked about before. The first obviously is her work at MD integrations and the work that she's done since she left the military about nine months ago, we talk about virtual care, which is a huge and exploding industry. We talk about why that's important, and why listeners may want to consider a career in virtual care. But we talk about a couple other things that I'm really happy we did. First of all, Laura has a very unique career right now where she works with a lot of clients. And she also is involved in many organizations. And so very often her day is meeting with people seeing what they need, and then figuring out the best way to help them with that need. And I think it's a really exciting way to think of structuring one's time and career to have a bigger impact. But we also off-road a little bit to talk about things that I'm curious to know what our audience thinks of because, you know, I view it from the vantage point of myself 1015 years ago, when I was on active duty and how I might dismiss what Laura is sharing. And then I view it through my lens now of being a civilian for 10 years, and a lot of things that are very commonplace in the civilian workforce, are still not really common in the military. And so for those of you on active duty, who might want to dismiss what Laura is talking about when it comes to maternity leave, and things like that, I'd really encourage you to be curious about her perspective. After the recording, Laura and I talked about this a bit. And I'm reminded of how there is just so much that I've become accustomed to now having been a civilian for a decade. And I'm realizing that when people transition out of the military, a lot of those things are going to seem new. And so if you know some of the things she talks about, you feel the need to dismiss, I'd encourage you to be curious and open because I find these things are things you're going to have to transition to eventually when you do leave the military if you're still in, as always at beyond the uniform.org you'll find show notes with links to everything we discussed, as well as 437 other episodes just like this. So with that, let's dive into my conversation with Laura.

In this episode of This Week in Health Tech, Vik and Jimmy invite Dr. Laura Purdy, CEO and CoFounder of MD Integrations, All in One Telehealth solutions company. Dr. Purdy is a 15 year army veteran and started her career in military medical school and as a hospitalist in military. She realized early on that telehealth will be the future of healthcare for simple things such as poison ivy or pink eye. In the old days of telehealth, there were a lot of challenges from technical challenge to scheduling patients. Jimmy asks about asynchronous use of telehealth. Asynchronous is offline dialog and not real-time communication. Direct to consumer telehealth companies are at different stages of development. All of these companies have to deal with the same technical challenges including the portal and integration. This is where MD Integrations has an API which is designed for asynchronous telehealth. One of the biggest pain points of telehealth is EMR. Today's EMRs are not designed for telehealth service, they are still designed for core brick and mortar services. Jimmy asks the question if asynchronous telehealth will increase over synchronous visits because patients do not prefer face to face visit if possible similar to other industries. Dr. Purdy explains the differences between the two and does think that asynchronous visits will continue to increase over face to face telehealth visits. The numbers are showing decrease in synchronous or real-time telehealth visits. On-demand healthcare is the future and asynchronous is able to assist w/ the same. Dr. Purdy provides examples of asynchronous use and why face to face call does not always make sense. Vik then asks why there are so many niche telehealth companies springing up when there are telehealth giants such as Teledoc and Livingo. Dr. Purdy explains in detail the reason behind need for niche telehealth companies and why this market does not need to depend only on the telehealth giants. The group then jumps in the integration challenges related to Telehealth and how to overcome challenge of access to data from health system, clinic, telehealth portals.
