All right, today we're talking about the elephant in the room: MENSTRUAL CYCLES. I know, I know - not everyone's favorite subject! But it's something we all deal with so we might as well discuss how our hormones and our periods affect us as mamas with ADHD. When you think about hormones, think about HOW MUCH your body has evolved through your life. Adolescence, puberty, pregnancy, postpartum...there's no denying everything's in flux pretty much all the time. So, the question is what do we REALLY need to know and how can we navigate our ADHD symptoms while our bodies are on a constant hormonal roller coaster? Sadly, there isn't a lot of research on the topic but there are a few really great resources that I'm excited to share in today's episode! Don't worry mama...I got you! I did a looooot of digging and I think you'll love the tools and resources I'm sharing. They'll shed some light on how our bodies work and what to do to be even MORE successful and gracious with ourselves as a woman with ADHD. Plus a big thank you to my friend and mentor, ADHD Coach Elizabeth Brink, for the research help! @coachelizabethbrink Want to dive in more? This topic comes up sometimes during our weekly group support calls for Daily Planning for ADHD Moms course. It's currently open for enrollment! Women in Business: Inspirational Stories of Women Entrepreneurs
Whether we want them to or not, recessions are inevitable in our economy. As successful business owners, keeping our business profitable and trading can be a real endeavor during a recession. But I’ve put together five of my best tips for making sure your business is recession-proof based on my own experience from the last 2007/2008 recession and plenty of research. What exactly is a recession and how will it affect your business? During a recession, people are less likely to spend money as businesses are just not growing and, in fact, many are failing and people are losing their jobs. Business is all about planning. You can, and should, put a plan together that details what actions you and your business will take if and when a recession hits. There are many benefits to this that will help you navigate these difficult times. And you definitely need to get to a solid understanding of your business finances so that you know where and how you can make changes to stay afloat. A recession can be a good time to experiment with what your business is and what you offer. Being innovative and adaptive to the economic changes can be the difference between success and failure. You might even find your most profitable business venture yet. Of course, reducing your expenses is something you’ll have to look at during a recession. If you have a dedicated office, it could be time to think about either co-working or going fully remote. You can be creative with how you reduce your expenses, especially if you’re paying for things unnecessarily. There are so many ways you can attract new clients to your business, even during a recession, but keeping your current clients happy is by far the most important thing you can do. These people are already giving your business money, so make sure the recession isn’t the reason they leave you. Your current clients are the ones keeping you afloat. But even more important than your existing clients are your team and employees. You should do everything you can to make sure they’re happy and as comfortable as can be during a difficult financial period. Team-building activities, a reduction in hours instead of pay (if necessary), and extra employee training can all benefit your staff and give them an extra morale boost. Is your business prepared for a recession to hit? Do you have a plan to help navigate through a recession? How do you plan to keep your team motivated when a recession hits? In This Episode: What a recession is and how it affects your business Why businesses stop growing when a recession hits What the benefit of having a recession plan for your business is Why you need to know everything about your business’s financial status when a recession hits How you can be innovative and adaptive to help your business succeed going through a recession Why you should look at ways to reduce your expenses How to keep your current customers happy and bring in new clients during a recession Why your team is the most valuable asset you have, especially when it’s hard How you can encourage your team to be more motivated through a recession Quotes: “It’s a recipe for disaster if a recession hits and you’re the business owner who doesn’t know their P&O.” (7:16) “When you don’t adapt, you die. And nobody wants that. Keep your business modern. Provide services in your wheelhouse that your customer needs.” (9:52) “I believe that your customers are valuable but your employees and your team is even more valuable.” (15:07) Links Use code SIDEHUSTLETOCEO for a discount on your Profit Planner! In today’s episode, Joe sits down with Andy Frasco, a touring rock musician with the band, Andy Frasco and the UN. In the show, they cover what is it like to be a touring rock musician with drugs so available and how to live more healthfully in the space. 3 Key Points: Andy Frasco is a talented, touring music artist a part of the band, Andy Frasco and the UN, as well as a podcast show host. Andy uses psychedelics to help cope with the anxiety that the rock star lifestyle brings. Psychedelics open us up to the possibility that everything we know is wrong. Finding truth and clarity for some people is hard, and people resort to alcohol and other harmful behaviors to suppress the painful reality we live in. Cocaine and uppers only keep a rock star up for so long. It keeps you awake for the partying, but it suppresses all the stresses of the lifestyle. Psychedelics and meditation can help with the balance needed in a stressful, lifestyle of traveling and fame. Psychedelics help us create a better relationship with our mind.” - Andy Andy says he has been anxious his whole life He has had very scary panic attacks He became addicted to sex as a crutch for his anxiety He woke up one day, and sex didn't give him the thrill anymore Andy started in the music industry because rock stars get the chicks Teen years are just about being super insecure about everything Shame is a huge influence on our relationships with other people “The majority of effects from drug use for people are good.” - a quote from Carl Hart, a Psychology Professor who studies drug use Andy's first psychedelic experience was an 8th of mushrooms at 18 years old Rock Star Lifestyle Andy says he used to be really into coke because he just had to stay up for the shows But he says he doesn't take anything anymore that feels like speed He was coping his exhaustion with drugs and alcohol “When you're in a band you're the party for one day of the year in that city.” - Andy Life for a rock star can't just be the 2 hour show, the trick is figuring out how to be mindful for the other 14 hours of the day after the party The lifestyle is really hard, its very common to use drugs, sex and alcohol to suppress it Humans were not designed for this Andy has begun using transcendental meditation to help with this lifestyle He also mentions having his first DMT experience recently Links Use code PSYTODAY at Onnit for discount on all products except fitness equipment Get a 30 day free trail at Audible About Andy Frasco Andy Frasco, a Los Angeles, CA native singer, songwriter, band maestro, entrepreneur, party starter and everyday hustler, tours with his band, “The U.N.” The music has elements of Soul, Funk, Rock and Roots and the shows have been described as orchestrated chaos, an overall great time. Women in Business: Inspirational Stories of Women Entrepreneurs
If you’re a business owner who doesn’t have a background in finance, looking at your numbers causes you to break out in a cold sweat, or you just don’t have the time to dedicate to your bookkeeping, you should consider outsourcing it. Danielle Hayden joins me to talk about how she helps female entrepreneurs make sense of their numbers and plan for profit. One of the most important aspects of being a business owner is to own your role, Danielle says. She has a client who refers to her million-dollar business in a way that makes it seem small and insignificant, which it obviously isn’t. By taking ownership of your status, you help to elevate both yourself and your business. That’s one of the reasons why you need to know your financial numbers. When you know how much money your business is bringing in, spending, and what your bottom line is, you can make smarter business decisions throughout the year. And isn’t that what we want as business owners? To make the best financial decisions for our companies? Danielle talks about how business owners can be more when it comes to talking money with clients. As much as you love being in business, you’re not doing it for free. The more you talk about money and learn your numbers, the more comfortable you’ll be in financial situations. If you’re not super comfortable chasing clients for money, Danielle recommends outsourcing this process as someone else won’t have the same emotion attached to the outstanding invoice. Danielle says that the most important number you need to know if your break-even number. This figure lets you know exactly how many clients you need to have, at what price, in order to meet all your bills. Of course, you’ll want to make more than this, but knowing where you break-even is the start of the cycle. How is your relationship with money? Do you know what your business break-even figure is? Have you considered outsourcing your bookkeeping? In This Episode: What happens when you outsource bookkeeping Why you should step into and embrace your role Why you need to know your numbers in order to make good business decisions throughout the year How we can be more confident to ask for money from your clients Why you should continuously look at your numbers to become comfortable Why you need to know your break-even number Why you should think about outsourcing your collections Quotes: “There are mindset issues. I think that women get in their own way and they’re not as willing to embrace their businesses.” (7:52) “When we are running successful businesses, as women, we need to be proud of that and be confident about that and really step into that role.” (9:46) “Use the numbers to make business decisions. Pay attention to your service lines and what you have to incur to keep your business running. What appears to be profitable may not always be profitable.” (27:02) Links Use code SIDEHUSTLETOCEO for a discount on your Profit Planner! In this episode, Kyle and Joe sit down to cover questions from listeners of the show. They discuss topics that include psychedelic use for exorcisms, cluster headaches, athletic performance, processing grief and more. 3 Key Points: There are a few examples where psychedelics are used to increase athletic performance. Psychedelics can also be used to help realign those who are using sports as a form of distraction from internalized issues. When eliminating variables for psilocybin consistency in mushrooms for therapeutic use, freeze drying helps. But there are so many variables in mushrooms versus synthesized psilocybin. When addressing the sustainability of the Toad, according to the data, there isn't a real difference between 5-MEO-DMT from a toad and synthesized 5-MEO-DMT Support the show Patreon Leave us a review on iTunes Share us with your friends – favorite podcast, etc Join our Facebook group - Psychedelics Today group – Find the others and create community. Navigating Psychedelics Show Notes Kratom Warning Joe brings up an issue that was brought up to him by a physician from the Wholeness Center, Dr. Craig Heacock, out of Fort Collins, CO Dr. Heacock warns about Kratom It is safer than opioids, but it can be physically addictive and getting off of it can be horrible Kratom withdrawal closely imitates opioid withdrawal The receptor site activity is the same as opioid pills Using Psychedelics for an Exorcism Kyle thinks of shamanic uses for plant medicines, and with the idea of purging and spiritual emergence, working in non-ordinary states can exacerbate these states and maybe help with this kind of work Joe and Kyle go into writings from Stan Grof, explaining the physical appearance of those going through LSD psychotherapy or breathwork, and how it assimilates to an ‘exorcism’ of releasing the bad The purging during a psychedelic experience may feel evil, or alien Joe and Kyle say, do not perform an exorcism, leave it to the trained people Treating Cluster Headaches with Psychedelics Cluster Busters is an organization for the research on cluster headaches LSD works for some as well as oxygen treatments work for others We know a lot more about migraines than cluster headaches The migraine is where neurons in the brain start misfiring and create a firing storm How can Psilocybin Mushrooms be Standardized in Production for Therapeutic Use? Joe says the practical solution is to have a really large amount of psilocybe cubensis, all blended up, and then split in even doses There are potency differences between species, strains, etc There are so many variances with mushrooms versus synthetic psilocybin Freeze drying also promotes close to 0% loss of psilocybin when drying mushrooms Psychedelics and Athletic Performance There may be psychological blocks that are getting in the way of a person reaching the peak performance of their genome It could be trauma, or psychological blocks Athletic performance could be a distraction from what you're really here to do Athletes have a lot of dysfunctional behavior Psychedelics may show us our bad behavior and help us align Kyle says he had this passion to snowboard and dedicate his life to snowboarding, and then he received a message in journeywork that told him snowboarding is simply a hobby and he needs to focus his life on other things “Sports are a great way to cover up our emotions” - Joe Kyle mentions tow other episodes that cover similar topics Ben Eddy Shane Lemaster How to get the Ball Rolling on Psychedelic Liberty Start a club Joe says he’s been incubating a Psychedelic Club in Phoenix Clubs are great for harm reduction Is There a Humane or Conservative Way to Harvest the Toad Without Disrupting its Habitat? Joe says yes, roadkill, pick them up off the road If you touch a living one, there is a chance you'll be doing harm Even touching the toad can transmit harmful fungus to them According to the data, there isn't a real difference between 5-MEO-DMT from a toad and synthesized 5-MEO-DMT How Psychedelics Might help with Processing Grief Kyle says when he thinks about grief, he thinks about trauma Psychedelics may be really beneficial when treating trauma Kyle says he loves breathwork, because it creates the container to process things and even just simply cry Kyle recommends a really great book on grieving, The Smell of Rain on Dust: Grief and Praise by Martin Prechtel Our culture does not contain grief very well A lot of people internalize it instead of breaking down and letting it go Links Use code PSYTODAY at Onnit for discount on all products except fitness equipment Get a 30 day free trail at Audible About Kyle Kyle’s interest in exploring non-ordinary states of consciousness began when he was 16-years-old when he suffered a traumatic snowboarding accident. We often talk here on the podcast about creating good habits to support our health. Easier said than done, right? In order to effectively train and feed your muscles you need tools to integrate good habits of nutrition and exercise, otherwise, progress isn’t going to happen. My guest, Laurie Gerber, is an expert at helping people, including myself, create the dreams needed to set in motion the right kind of changes. Laurie is passionate about personal development. She’s a head coach at Handel Group where she teaches people how to pursue their dreams and be truthful with themselves, which is harder than we might think. Laurie has been coaching individuals and groups through in-person meetings, live events, and online for over 15 years in addition to TV appearances on MTV, A&E, the Dr. Phil Show, and the Today Show. In today’s episode, we discuss transitioning from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. This requires creating and identifying your dreams and promises and having consequences so that you see them through. It’s about aligning your words with your actions and dismissing the negative stories you tell yourself that end up holding you back. Have you identified your dreams? What’s standing in the way? Leave a comment on the episode page! In this episode: What it means to have personal integrity so that we can truly align our words and our actions Creating and following dreams that exceed what you previously thought possible Identifying and overcoming the negative stories that we tell ourselves Making achievable promises to ourselves and setting non-punitive consequences for when we don’t follow through Quotes: “I am not asking people to dream pie in the sky. I am asking people to dream what is inspiring to themselves; truthful, goosebumpy, spine-tingling, but not grandiose. Because the minute we go grandiose … we don’t believe it. Our subconscious can’t swallow it.” [10:28] “We were deeply getting to know my subconscious and the inner dialogue I could easily detect and the inner dialogue that I couldn’t easily detect. And that was essentially my god, that was what I was bowing to and I didn’t even know it. I didn’t even know what it was saying.” [24:34] “Your dream’s tactic is to get inspired by the dream, debunk your dumbass theories and excuses, and then get into action. If you don’t do the action you said you would do, pay a consequence - no drama.” [27:30] Links: Use the code “musclemedicine75” for a discount on Handel Group’s digital program InnerU Coach Handel Group Follow Handel Group on Facebook Schedule your free phone consultation Take the Current Reality Quiz Check out the full show notes for this episode here Urban Wellness Clinic Follow Emily & Urban Wellness on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube

In this episode Andrew will dissect how we as art teachers can fit into the current “big data” educational paradigm. Art teachers are all too familiar with the buzzwords, Professional Learning Communities, Common Formative and Summative Assessments, Student Learning Objectives, and standardized tests. Everything in education seems to be about hard, quantifiable data. This shouldn’t leave teachers on the outside looking in or force them to wave the white flag or stick their heads in the sand and say that using data isn’t relevant. AOE’s good friend and go-to data diva Sarah Dougherty joins the show to talk about how art teachers can make data work for them… in short, how to make data sexy! Sarah will help answer how art teachers can make data important, fun, and meaningful and ultimately work in the art room. As Andrew and Sarah dig into data they discuss what good data and data collection looks like in the art room (6:30), what kind of assessments are best for getting that kind of authentic data (8:45), and how data can drive the decision making process in your PLC (11:30).
