Below are a few quotes from this episode. "it's hard to stay mad, angry or upset, when you are faced with the gift of a beautiful friendship"... "Be a friend to people, be a beacon of light, strive to leave this world better than you found it, be the gift of friendship in people's lives"..."Human connection is the most important thing to me in my life"..."If you feel like you were kind of dealt a sad hand of family dynamics, that need not be your destiny, you can establish other families with meaningful friendships"..."Human suffering needs to be addressed, I think it needs to be talked about"..."Things that you plan may not work out as you plan them to, but that doesn't mean you still can't find satisfaction and joy in life, you can be optimistic, hopeful, assertive, and you can be proactive instead of reactive. You don't have to be the smartest, most attractive or best looking person to find success and accomplishment in this life." Enjoy!

Ask deep questions – A deep question asks about someone's values, beliefs, judgments, or experiences, rather than just facts. A deep question asks people to talk about how they feel. Asking a deep question should feel like sharing. NASA listened to how people laughed and if they possessed a genuine matching quality. Not performative or inauthentic, but people who connect with others by matching their energy. The 4 Rules of a learning conversation: Pay attention to what type of conversation is occurring Share your goals, ask what others are seeking Ask about others' feelings and share your own Explore if identities are important to this discussion The How Do We Feel conversation: What can we learn about listening from Nicholas Epley? (Psychology Professor). (Everyone knows how to listen deeply. If a podcast or something is interesting, nobody struggles to listen). Epley didn't teach them how to listen. He urged them to have more interesting and meaningful conversations. To talk about feelings. When we talk about feelings, something magical happens. Other people can't help but listen to us. Practical actions to take: Ask Deep Questions: Instead of sticking to surface-level topics, ask questions that invite people to share their values, beliefs, or significant experiences. For instance, if someone mentions they are a doctor, ask them what inspired them to pursue medicine. Prove You're Listening: Demonstrate that you are actively listening by asking follow-up questions or repeating back what the other person has said to ensure understanding. Match Emotional Tone: Pay attention to the other person's emotional state and match it appropriately. If someone is sharing something emotional, respond with empathy rather than attempting to offer solutions immediately. Understand the Social Identity: Be mindful of the social identities that might be important in a conversation. This awareness can enhance understanding and connection by showing respect for the experiences and viewpoints shaped by those identities. Charles shared that understanding whether a conversation is emotional, social, or practical is crucial, especially in leadership and educational settings. Teachers, for instance, are taught to ask students if they want to be helped, heard, or hugged—a reminder that recognizing the intent behind communications is key to providing appropriate support and connection. Mikki Hebl, an industrial organizational psychologist and the Martha and Henry Malcolm Lovett Chair of Psychology – Professor of Management at Rice University, has been studying workplace discrimination and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) for 30 years, well before DEI became the widely discussed topic it is today. In March of this year, Mikki and Eden King, the Lynette S. Autrey Professor of Psychological Science at Rice, released a new book (Working Together: Practicing the Science of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion). In it, they outline the state-of-the-art science that makes the case for DEI and delve into effective strategies for individuals and organizations to foster more inclusive environments. Mikki chats with host Maya Pomroy ‘22 about her book, the subtleties of biases, and the importance of staying informed and aware of biases to make the world and workplaces fairer and more equitable for everyone. It's about protection in the workplace for people who are 40 and older. Well, it turns out the realistic, like, imperative of our world is that it's very much changing. We're getting older. Women are entering the workforce. Women should be entering the workforce more, in my opinion, but the reason they don't is because we don't have family-friendly policies that allow them to have paid childcare, have paid family leave. We're not enabling our families.17:11: DEI is not going away. Whatever conversation, whatever words we want to use, DEI is here to stay, and it's here to stay because it is not this weaponized definition of just blacks or women who are getting rights that they shouldn't get. Why is diversity training important?43:13: Why do we want diversity training? Because diversity training is teaching us: What are the norms in this organization? How should we be treating people? What I like to say is, it's very similar to safety training. So, if you wanted to go to an organization and you said, I don't want to do safety training," I don't want to learn how to wear my hard hat. We would laugh at you. We would say you have to know the rules. You gotta, like, tie off. You gotta do these things. We don't want you to lose your hand in the wood chipper, okay? And so, the same thing is true of diversity training. It's trying to protect people.Show Links: Working Together: Practicing the Science of Diversity, Equity, and InclusionTranscriptGuest Profile:Dr. Mikki Hebl | Rice UniversityDr. Hebl's Personal Website

Our conversation today is a journey into understanding how the inclusion of female experiences and voices is radically transforming the fields of philosophy and psychology. For too long, these disciplines have echoed predominantly male perspectives, shaping our understanding of the mind, behavior, and ethical norms from a limited viewpoint. But as more women enter these fields, bringing with them a diverse range of experiences, we are witnessing a significant shift in how we perceive, analyze, and relate to the world around us.With Professor Paul, we'll explore how female scholars and thinkers are not just adding to the conversation but are reshaping it entirely. Their unique perspectives challenge longstanding theories and introduce new paradigms that more accurately reflect the complexity of human experience. We'll discuss how this transformation is not just academic but deeply personal, influencing everything from policy decisions to everyday interpersonal dynamics. In this episode, we will dive into questions such as: How does the female experience alter our understanding of consciousness and identity? In what ways can embracing these diverse perspectives lead to more innovative and inclusive psychological theories and philosophical ideas? And most importantly, how does this shift impact the decisions we make, both as individuals and as a society?Join us for this enlightening conversation with Professor L.A. Paul as we uncover the profound impact of female voices in reshaping the landscapes of philosophy and psychology. L.A. Paul serves as the Millstone Family Professor of Philosophy and Professor of Cognitive Science at Yale University, leading the Self and Society Initiative at Yale's Wu Tsai Institute. Her research critically examines the intersection of self-identity, decision-making, and the metaphysical and cognitive scientific aspects of time, causality, and experience. Paul has been distinguished with fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Humanities Center, and the Australian National University. After unpacking the history of the region, the hosts dig into the Ammons family's case, from the first signs of paranormal activity to the extreme behavior that eventually led Latoya to flee the home and seek medical attention for her children. They also review reports made by healthcare professionals, law enforcement officers, and government workers whose eyewitness accounts point to two chilling possibilities: either the Ammons family suffered a psychological phenomenon, or the house really was infested by something evil and otherworldly. Hadley and Alyssa also discuss what happened to the house after Ghost Adventures host Zak Bagans bought it in 2014. Later, they're joined by Karl Rosengren, a professor in the Brain and Cognitive Sciences and Psychology departments at the University of Rochester, to discuss how belief in the paranormal and magic affect early childhood development, the psychology behind superstition, and more. The Twin Children of the Holocaust: Stolen Childhood and the Will to Survive (Academic Studies Press, 2023) is an annotated collection of original, informative, and moving photographs of the twins who survived the brutal medical experiments conducted at the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp (1943-1945). The experiments were conducted by the infamous physician, Josef Mengele. These never-before-seen photographs were taken by the author (Segal) at the 40th anniversary of the camp's liberation (January 27, 1985) and the public hearing on Mengele's crimes at Yad Vashem (A Memorial and a Name) in Jerusalem that followed. Other memorable moments, captured in photographs, include traveling to Krakow, visiting Warsaw and hearing survivors' testimonies. The photographs are organized into ten sections that unfold chronologically—each section is accompanied by a brief essay to provide compelling context and each photograph has an informative caption. Dr. Nancy L. Segal is Psychology Professor and Director, Twin Studies Center, at California State University, Fullerton. Her book, Born Together-Reared Apart, won the American Psychological Association's William James Book Award. Her work has been featured in the New York Times and Atlantic Monthly. In this week's episode of Next Page, we have the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Lisa Smith, an Author, Psychology Professor, Hypnotherapist and Advocate for Victims of Sexual Assault. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and with an American getting sexually assaulted every 68 seconds, 1 out of 6 women in America being victims of attempted or completed rape and 84% of victims being under the age of 18, it's more important than ever to talk about how we as individuals and a culture can help the fight against sexual victimization. In this episode we learn how Lisa became an advocate, a professor of psychology and an author of adult and children's books on sexual assault and America's Rape Culture. We talk about her book “Blaming and Shaming of Defenseless Victims,” which shines the light on the victim blaming culture we live in today and how as a society we protect the powerful, while silencing the victims. Dr. Smith also educates us about the signs of grooming, the myth of stranger danger, and why blame shifting, underreporting and misguided attempts to keep family units together exacerbates and creates opportunities for sexual assault. We break down the different stages of grooming, how to prevent your kids from becoming victims, the power of children's voices, the #kidstoo movement and how to forgive yourself and move on from experiencing Sexual Assault yourself. Lisa, a practicing hypnotherapist also lets us in on how hypnosis can help those who have repressed sexual trauma, how to tell someone is lying through body language, and how teaching diversity and cultural sensitivity helps to reduce unconscious stereotypes and racism. Thanks to Dr. Lisa Smith, an inspirational advocate against sexual victimization, this episode is FULL of practical information and straight-talk about the victim blaming world we live in today. This week's guest on Perpetual Chess is author, psychology professor and avid chess player, Dr. Joel Sneed. In the professional realm, Joel is a practicing clinical psychologist, and his research focuses on the topics of late life depression and cognitive impairment. A casual chess game with a patient led to Joel's discovery of competitive chess, and since then he has always found time for the game. In addition to co-authoring some excellent chess books, Joel has achieved very unusual gains for an adult learner. Joel began tournament chess at age 33 with a 1200 rating, and at age 48 is rated over 2000! Joel thinks that part of the reason for his success has been his emphasis on the psychological side of chess, as discussed in his latest collaboration with GM Boris Gulko, Analyzing the Chess Mind. The book provides both traditional game analysis from GM Gulko, as well as more general advice about chess psychology from both the GM and the Professor. It was fascinating to hear Joel's story, and there is much to learn from his book and from our conversation!
