As great as it would be, becoming a millionaire is not an overnight achievement... unless you’ve won the lottery. Self-made millionaires all have a set of habits they stick to in order for them to be successful. In this episode of Women in Business, I share what they are. First of all, you absolutely need to set up multiple streams of income. Think side hustles, affiliate marketing, employment, book sales, speaking engagements… it doesn’t matter where the revenue comes from, make sure you have at least a few sources coming in. Millionaires have a good grasp on what their budget is and what their books look like at all times. And, this is the most important part, they stick to the budget. Don’t forget as well that in order to avoid burning out, you should be working self-care necessities into your budget, too. I’m sure you already know the importance of your network, right? But do you know that you should be taking the opportunity to build your circle at every single opportunity? It’s true what they say, that your network is your net worth. Having confidence, even learned confidence, is a vital part of becoming a millionaire. Being confident in who you are, what your expertise is, and what decisions you’ve made to get to where you are. You also need to have the confidence to take risks. Risks are an important part of getting ahead in business. Millionaires also invest in coaches and mentors. Who better to learn from than someone who’s already walked where you’re walking and done what you’re doing? Make the investment. Trust me. Lastly, practice gratitude every single day. Gratitude has so many benefits, including boosting your mental, physical, and emotional health! When you take the time to be grateful for what you already have around you, you’re more likely to be in the right frame of mind for success. Do you already have some of these habits? What ones are you going to start doing right away? Let me know in the comments on the episode page! In This Episode: Why you need to have multiple streams of income What the long-term reason for knowing your budget and books is How to avoid burning out by investing in self-care. Why you should build your network at every available opportunity What the benefits of being confident are Why you should take risks in business Why millionaires invest in business coaches and mentors in order to be more successful What role gratitude has in millionaire success Quotes: “It’s crucial that we be aware of our incoming and outgoing funds of the total of your fixed and variable expenses, and then from there build a budget. But a budget is only good if you’re going to stick to it!” (8:00) “Ladies, if you have a business coach who’s not looking at your finances and helping you keep that in check, your business could be in danger! I cannot stress that enough. Your finances and your cash flow are the number one thing in your business.” (8:50) “The most successful people in the world have strong connections around them.” (12:01) “It’s so important to be confident in who you are, your expertise, and your decisions.” (14:52) “Procrastination and laziness won’t build an empire. Happy International Women’s Day, you beautiful, driven souls! This episode is dedicated to you. To making waves, taking seats, and standing up for what you believe in. Because, ladies, the tide is changing. This is only our beginning. How many times in your life have you been called a bitch? It’s a fairly regular occurrence. But tell me what is wrong with standing up for yourself and others, what you believe in, and being that bold voice in the workplace? Nothing, that’s what! One thing’s for sure. We need to keep speaking up. Speak up for yourself, for other women, for anyone struggling with diversity. Women reaching gender equality in the workplace is set for over 100 years away! We can do better if we speak up. I know that it’s not always the easiest environment, being a woman in the workplace. You’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t, right? This is called a double-bind - it’s similar to a double standard but applicable in the workplace. Let’s talk about how we can stop it. Finally, I’m giving you the low-down on what the rules of our new playbook are, ladies. These are the steps and actions we need to take in order to step up and speak out about gender bias in the workplace. Define what matters to you. Be committed to diversity and inclusion. Women in Business: Inspirational Stories of Women Entrepreneurs
Starting your own business is such an incredible feeling! I want you to start on the best footing possible: by giving you give business tips every female entrepreneur needs to know. These tips will help you avoid the common mistakes many women in business make while scaling! First things first - you NEED to have a contract for every single business interaction you have. Trust me. You don’t need to be embarrassed or feel awkward about getting your work agreement in writing. Nine times out of ten it’s just a formality, but there could be a time when you need to refer back to your contract, so make sure you have one! Next, we’re talking about how you can start your business off on the right foot from day one. This means registering your business and setting up a separate bank account so you can start trading the right way. And, as easy as it is to put another business on blast for some BS they pulled with you, I really, truly, honestly recommend NOT doing that. Burning bridges is not the way to handle sour relations. Keep your head up, take the high road, and, if that’s not enough, take them to court. But don’t drag them through the mud - that just reflects badly on you. You also definitely need to face your fear and get comfortable asking for what you want. This goes for both asking for your WORTH and for potential opportunities and networking. Not only will your business relationship improve, but I guarantee so will your confidence and bank balance. Finally, I urge you to believe in yourself. When you do, and when you respect yourself, your business, your work, and what you stand for, guess what? So will other people. Are you ready to pursue the business you’ve always dreamed of? Let me know in the comments on the episode page! In This Episode: Why you should always use a contract How you can get your finances straight from day 1 of your business Why you absolutely need to have a separate business bank account What happens when you burn bridges in your business journey How to face your fear and ask for what you want What happens when you’re confident of your worth Why you need to stand up for what you believe in and earn respect Quotes: “You contract, and more importantly your client’s signature equates to nothing but pure gold. And without having a written, agreed upon, and mutually signed agreement in your hot little hands, you’re better off holding pixie dust.” (4:55) “You cannot control other people and their poor ways of handling situations. But the one thing you do have complete control over is how you handle yourself and your business.” (15:03) “We need to be it til we believe it. Your worth and your confidence will come from taking baby steps or huge leaps, whatever you’re comfortable with, to be the woman you admire.” (17:28) “Don’t be afraid to speak up because earned respect starts with YOU respecting your first.” (21:32) Links Find Dr. Cortney Baker Online Follow Dr. Cortney Baker on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn Join From Side Hustle to CEO on Facebook Subscribe to Women in Business on Apple Podcasts Are you a female millennial entrepreneur who wants to start or scale your service-based business but not sure where to start? Women in Business: Inspirational Stories of Women Entrepreneurs
When you organize your business, there’s no limit to how much you can get done. In this episode, I’m sharing the 5 steps you need to take in order to G.S.D. (Get Sh*t Done) so you can take control of your business and bring in the revenue you know you can. I’m a firm believer that you need to be organized to reach your maximum business potential. Most women I know pride themselves on being multi-taskers, but studies have actually shown that multi-tasking makes you LESS productive. That’s why you need to learn how to time-block. Time-blocking helps you figure out where your time is going each week and what you’re actually wasting time on. When you’ve figured that out, you can block all your tasks together. So, for example, you spend 1 hour in the morning replying to emails, then don’t look at it again until the next day. When you organize for time-blocking, you should also label your tasks, based on how important it is that YOU complete them, how big a priority they are for your business, and how much you enjoy them. Trust me when I say that organizing your schedule by time-blocking will have a profound impact on your level of productivity. Plus, once you’ve figured out which tasks take a lot of time and take you OUT of your zone of genius, you can start building standard operating procedures so you can outsource them! You also need to learn to love automation to take over repetitive and time-consuming tasks, like onboarding a new client. Are you ready to Get Sh*t Done? What is the first task you’re going to outsource? Let me know in the comments on the episode page! In This Episode: Why you need to be organized in order to make more money What steps you need to take to be ultra-organized and GSD How time-blocking makes you more productive What happens when you organize your schedule Why you need to set your business priorities When you should consider outsourcing How automation can save you time running your admin Quotes: “Studies have shown that you are actually 30% less productive when multi-tasking because you aren’t truly focusing on the task that you are working on.” (3:45) “What are you working on and spending your time and focus on that will actually bring in revenue? And what are you doing that really is just a time suck in your day? Because so many business owners get caught up in their own “busy work”.” (12:56) “So let a CRM take your repeatable processes off your plate and handle them for you. Trust me, it’ll be a breath of fresh air.” (17:20) Links Try HoneyBook for yourself Find Dr.
Confrontation. Even just the word itself can cause some people to break out in a cold sweat, dreading the conversation they have to have. And, I promise, every business has moments of confrontation at some point or another, and not many people actually like it or go about it in a healthy way. In this episode of Women in Business, I’m talking about how we can approach confrontation with confidence. The first thing you need to do is to set boundaries for your business. Who you serve, why you serve them, and what your because is. By knowing these aspects of your business as well as your core values, you’ll have the best sense to know who you want to work with. Next, you need to get real comfortable with saying “no.” And while it is a complete sentence, you can always refer a potential client on to someone else who they’d be a yes for. Trust me when I say that when you say no to opportunities that don’t serve you, you’re opening yourself up for so many others that absolutely scream YES. You also need to be confident in your prices. There will inevitably come a time when a client wants to negotiate on your prices - but you should never, ever do that. If they can’t afford your services, you can consider creating a custom package for them that offers fewer services for less money, but you should never lower your rates. Lastly, it’s all about how to actually fire that bad client. We’ve all been there, where we take someone on only to realize they’re not a great client - and may even be what I call a pain in the *ss (PITA). I give you a couple of tips for how to have those direct confrontational conversations and fire those clients. Have you ever had to fire a client? How have you ensured your business has boundaries? Are you comfortable with saying no? In This Episode: Why you need to set boundaries about who your business serves Why you need to know your “why” and your “because” in order to grow your business How saying no can help open you up to opportunities that make you scream yes How to stand firm in your rates and prices Why you should adjust the package to fit your client’s budget, but never lower the price for the same amount of work How to fire a bad client Quotes: “There are times when saying no to people who are willing to pay you will actually help you grow more than saying yes will. It sounds counterproductive, but it’s true” (7:34) “Whenever a situation arises that doesn’t serve your business core values, then your answer should be no. But, if you have a potential referral source for them, then give them that name.” (12:04) “Think of your pricing as just a number. It’s non-negotiable. And bonus, you don’t have to justify it, either.” (18:44) Links Leave Women in Business a review on Apple Podcasts Find Dr. Dr. Cortney Baker is an award-winning entrepreneur, the host of the podcast "Women in Business: Inspirational Stories of Women Entrepreneurs with Dr. Cortney," a TEDx speaker and a nationally recognized authority on women’s leadership. Baker is also the CEO of KidsCare Home Health, a multi-million-dollar healthcare organization with 12 locations across Texas, Colorado and Idaho. She stopped by Frontline Source Group's, People, Process, Service, podcast to talk about her journey and her passion for entrepreneurship and mentoring future women leaders. Asked about the No. 1 thing she’s learned when it comes to working with people, Baker said, “Hire smarter than you. The people you surround yourself with in your organization are so important, and they need to be intelligent, driven, and determined.” Baker wants to hire people who could work for any healthcare organization, but choose to work for KidsCare Home Health. In the past several years, Baker’s company has grown to multiple locations and more than 650 employees across several states. What was the secret sauce that made her company so successful, while similar, more established companies did not experience the same growth? Baker attributed success to several factors, including the company’s process of hiring the best people and providing the best service. Baker’s passion is entrepreneurship, and she takes pride in mentoring women to become the leaders of today and tomorrow. “What are the challenges we face as women in the workforce?,” Baker said. “When I looked at the research and the four most common factors contributing to these challenges, the common denominator was confidence, (and) 80% of the women I talk to say they lack confidence.” That's what drives Baker to help other women start and scale service-based businesses. Entrepreneurship is Baker’s jam, and she may have the perfect recipe for success.
Women in Business: Inspirational Stories of Women Entrepreneurs
Successful companies consist of more than just one adventurous solopreneur. True success comes from building a trustworthy team around you who can work independently to help your company grow. The most important thing you, as the solo entrepreneur, can do is learn to be a better leader and relinquish complete control over your company. Now, I’m not saying you have to let other people take over and do whatever they want in your business. But when you have a team of people or even just one person to start with, once you’re confident that they are competent at their job, giving them a bit of free reign can be so beneficial to your business. Obviously, the first thing you need to do to grow your business is to outsource. You don’t necessarily have to hire a whole slew of employees right off, you can absolutely hire freelancers and contractors. Outsourcing lets you stay in your zone of genius, working on what you do best while letting your team take on the tasks that they specialize in. One thing you don’t want to do is micromanage your team. No one likes when they have someone breathing down their neck over their work, so trust me when I say that you should let your team have some flexibility in freedom to do the work you assign them. Once they’re clear on the work they need to do, let them get on with it! This is where setting up standard operating procedures is a really smart thing to do, as well. You’ll also come across times when you, your team, or your business hit a stumbling block or maybe even a failure. A good leader approaches this in their stride and uses it as a learning experience and a way to improve the company in the future. You should always strive to be a better leader; it doesn’t always come completely naturally, but you can learn as you go. Are you ready to outsource in order to grow your business? What operating procedures can you put in place so you don’t have to constantly supervise your team? How can you start being a better leader? In This Episode: Why you need to let go of total control of your business How outsourcing can help your business grow How to make outsourcing an easy process What happens to your employees when you micromanage them Why you should let your team has as much flexibility and freedom to do their work as possible How working through failures will make you a better company How you can learn to be a better leader Quotes: “You will not grow if you don’t let go and stay in your zone of genius and let others operate in theirs.” (3:09) “Letting go of control and allowing your team to have the direction to know what they need to do but the flexibility to get it done will give your team the independence they need to thrive.” (13:15) “When you’re a business owner, it’s important to position yourself to work on your business and not in the daily trenches, but the only way you can successfully do that is to outsource. Hire well, work on your own leadership traits, and know how you want to proceed and lead your company, and learn to embrace failure.” (18:18) Links Find Dr.
Is there anything worse than running your business for almost two years and hearing that someone else has registered the exact same business name as yours? This happened to one of my clients, and she is, unfortunately, not alone. But examples like this just go to show you why it’s essential that you start your business the right way - the legal way! In this episode of Women in Business, I’m taking you through the five things you need to do when setting up your business. You want your business to be trading legally, with a protected name, and set-up in a way that’s going to allow flexibility, longevity, and maybe even for someone to buy it off you one day. When it comes to naming your business, I always caution against using your own name. Not only does this tie into the lifetime and legacy of your business, but you’ll also be stuck in how your business evolves and grows over time. You also need to make sure that you legally protect your business’s name so that no one swoops in and tries to steal your legacy. You need to legally register your business within your State. There are so many different options for how to start legally trading and if you’re not sure right away, definitely seek out some advice from your CPA. You’ll also want to register for and receive your EIN right away - it’s basically your business’s social security number. Next, make sure that you separate your business finances from your personal ones. Yes, you might be the one running the show, but it’s so important to keep your business money separate, especially when it comes to tax season. And I would always caution about having and using a business bank account. Lastly, whether you know you want to hire down the line or not, it’s always a good idea to understand the legalities around hiring. You will very likely want to grow your business, so setting it up right from the beginning will be a lifesaver. I briefly explain the differences between employees, contractors, and interns and why you might want to hire one over another. Have you registered and trademarked your business name? Are you planning to hire employees for growth? How have you set your business up so that you can eventually step back from day-to-day operations? In This Episode: Why you shouldn’t name your business after yourself How to name your business in a way that allows growth and flexibility What you need to do to legally protect your business name How to choose which entity you set your business up as What an EIN is and why you need one right away when you start your business Why you need to start a business bank account from day one How to start your business with a view to hiring down the line What the differences between employees, contractors, and interns are Quotes: “A business is going to be much more valuable when it’s not dependent on you to operate.” (6:53) “Sole proprietorship is going to give you total control of your business. That means you are the sole owner, you have zero, typically, investors. This is just you, by yourself. It also means that all the business assets are tied to you personally.” (10:46) “The contractor has a lot of freedom when it comes to how they perform their craft. Be mindful of this when writing your hiring contracts.” (20:35) Links United States Patent and Trademark Office Try LegalZoom for yourself Find Dr.
Scaling your business and building it to the next level doesn’t have to be a scary, daunting endeavor you keep putting off because you don’t know what to do. In fact, as long as you establish a solid foundation and framework, scaling your company couldn’t be easier. Scaling your business isn’t about hiring a full team of employees all at once, in fact, you can start by outsourcing just one part of your business! So when should you start thinking about scaling? I’d say you should start considering the process before you’re at the point where you’re turning work away - because, for a super successful business, there’s no such thing as too much work! The first thing you need to do when you’re getting ready to scale is to create a framework that will help your company grow. In this episode of Women in Business, I explain what aspects you need to have in your framework in order for it to be successful. Building the right team around you is essential for healthy company growth. And, more than that, your team should have the same level of excitement about your business as you do. The right team will help you scale your business to the next level. Another aspect you need to consider when scaling your business is your company values. Make sure you’re familiar with them from early on, set them out in your framework, and hire your team around them. If the people you hire don’t fit your values when you hire them, you’re sure to have problems along the way. There will also come a time when you’ll want, no - need, to delegate some tasks and leadership to your team. This is such a good thing and you’re going to need to trust them to get the job done their way. In the same vein, you should definitely open a channel for feedback to and from your team - you want them involved in your entire process. A solid workflow will also be beneficial. Are you ready to scale up your business? Do you know how to create a framework that will make scaling easier? How can you open channels of communication that will help create a team you trust? In This Episode: When you should start hiring in your business Why you need to create a framework for your company to grow What aspects you need to have in your company scaling framework Why you need to share excitement about your business with your team What importance there is in defining your business’s core values How you can delegate some of the leadership in order to scale your business Why you need to ask your employees what they think How to create a workflow that will enable scaling Quotes: “Scaling is how you set the stage and create the base structure that will enable growth in your company.” (7:04) “Leading a team is essential and all teams need a leader. So, build a team that shares your vision for where you desire the company to go and get the buy-in from your team and lead them to the success.” (10:21) “Making your onboarding process repeatable not only saves you time in the long run, but it also means you can hand off this task to a new hire and it will still be replicable.” (18:00) Links Try Honeybook for yourself Find Dr. Dr. Cortney is on a mission to change the world – one woman, one mother, one daughter and one legacy at a time. But her path to popularity, power, and prosperity has required her to navigate numerous potholes. In 1993, six months after graduating from high school, she put dreams of attending college at Texas A&M on hold and instead became a single teenage mom. Watching her friends leave for college, she was instead forced onto Medicaid, food stamps and double-shifts as a pregnant waitress. Despite those immense obstacles, she launched a successful and transcendent business career. Through a combination of passion and persistence, Dr. Cortney earned her Master's degree from Southern Illinois University and founded KidsCare Home Health. In 2005, Dr. Cortney suffered a pulmonary embolism and in 2012 endured a stroke that required 7-hour brain surgery. Despite seemingly insurmountable health odds, she quickly rebounded, earning her doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Pepperdine University. She is currently the CEO and Chairman of the Board for KidsCare, a multi-million dollar enterprise providing speech, physical, occupational, and nursing services to over 2,500 children with special needs from Texas to Colorado. Gender equality in the workplace is over 100 years from being our everyday reality. These statistics are shocking. They’re one of the reasons I encourage and help women to start their own business now, instead of wasting decades of their lives working for companies that don’t value them as employees. I truly believe that if you have the desire to start your own business, you shouldn’t wait. Spend the next years of your life building and creating your own empire instead of slaving away for someone else’s. I also think that hiring a business coach is one of the best investments you can make for your business. With a pretty saturated business coach market out there, it’s important to find the right coach for YOU. In this episode, I go through the questions you need to ask yourself and any potential business coach you’re considering working with. Ultimately, your business coach should prepare you to succeed in your business without you. Your business coach should have similar values to yours. You should feel comfortable talking to them about almost anything. You should also respect them enough to actually listen and put their advice and recommendations into action because what a waste of time and money if you decide to ignore it! There are a lot of business coaches out there sharing some not-so-great business advice. I like to call them Vanity Coaches - they usually recommend building a large social following, which, while great in theory, doesn’t often come with a heap of sales. There’s a lot more value in making in-person connections. Are you ready to invest in yourself and hire a business coach? You need to ask yourself this question and answer honestly. It will be hard and dedicated work, but the payoff will be worth it. Have you considered investing in a business coach? Do you know how to find the perfect coach for you? What values do you want your business coach to share with you? In This Episode: Why you shouldn’t wait to start your own business What you need to look for to choose the right business coach for you What your business coach should help you do Why your business coach should share similar values to you Why you need to prioritize making in-person connections, not just social media followings What you need to be ready to do when you’re hiring a business coach Quotes: “I can make an impact. This is how I can change the future for my daughters. With my experience and knowledge, I can help women take their careers into their own hands and change the dismal gender equality statistics.” (10:56) “I highly recommend choosing a business coach who has walked the path you’re trying to walk because they are your tour guide.” (13:38) “You need a coach who not only knows her stuff but can help you understand it. You won’t have a coach forever, so you need to understand the basics of business and learn from your business coach so you can tackle business with or without them.” (16:18) Links Find Dr.
Whether we want them to or not, recessions are inevitable in our economy. As successful business owners, keeping our business profitable and trading can be a real endeavor during a recession. But I’ve put together five of my best tips for making sure your business is recession-proof based on my own experience from the last 2007/2008 recession and plenty of research. What exactly is a recession and how will it affect your business? During a recession, people are less likely to spend money as businesses are just not growing and, in fact, many are failing and people are losing their jobs. Business is all about planning. You can, and should, put a plan together that details what actions you and your business will take if and when a recession hits. There are many benefits to this that will help you navigate these difficult times. And you definitely need to get to a solid understanding of your business finances so that you know where and how you can make changes to stay afloat. A recession can be a good time to experiment with what your business is and what you offer. Being innovative and adaptive to the economic changes can be the difference between success and failure. You might even find your most profitable business venture yet. Of course, reducing your expenses is something you’ll have to look at during a recession. If you have a dedicated office, it could be time to think about either co-working or going fully remote. You can be creative with how you reduce your expenses, especially if you’re paying for things unnecessarily. There are so many ways you can attract new clients to your business, even during a recession, but keeping your current clients happy is by far the most important thing you can do. These people are already giving your business money, so make sure the recession isn’t the reason they leave you. Your current clients are the ones keeping you afloat. But even more important than your existing clients are your team and employees. You should do everything you can to make sure they’re happy and as comfortable as can be during a difficult financial period. Team-building activities, a reduction in hours instead of pay (if necessary), and extra employee training can all benefit your staff and give them an extra morale boost. Is your business prepared for a recession to hit? Do you have a plan to help navigate through a recession? How do you plan to keep your team motivated when a recession hits? In This Episode: What a recession is and how it affects your business Why businesses stop growing when a recession hits What the benefit of having a recession plan for your business is Why you need to know everything about your business’s financial status when a recession hits How you can be innovative and adaptive to help your business succeed going through a recession Why you should look at ways to reduce your expenses How to keep your current customers happy and bring in new clients during a recession Why your team is the most valuable asset you have, especially when it’s hard How you can encourage your team to be more motivated through a recession Quotes: “It’s a recipe for disaster if a recession hits and you’re the business owner who doesn’t know their P&O.” (7:16) “When you don’t adapt, you die. And nobody wants that. Keep your business modern. Provide services in your wheelhouse that your customer needs.” (9:52) “I believe that your customers are valuable but your employees and your team is even more valuable.” (15:07) Links Use code SIDEHUSTLETOCEO for a discount on your Profit Planner! Women in Business: Inspirational Stories of Women Entrepreneurs
Sitting there thinking about your business one day existing isn’t going to make it happen. You need to get out of your own head and start doing, otherwise, how are you ever going to succeed in business? And whatever you do, don’t listen to that mean little voice who exists in your head. Trust me, she just wants to see you hold yourself back. The same goes for that voice’s big sister, imposter syndrome. Yep, imposter syndrome is real and we’ve all been through it at one point or another. None of us are immune to thinking we don’t belong in the game. But you do. You don’t need to have a picture-perfect business with branding, business cards, a website, or anything else that makes you feel “legit” before you start selling your services. You can use these excuses as a crutch for why you’re not starting, but the truth is, you just need to start. Start by pricing and charging what you think your services are worth. You shouldn’t offer your services for free or at a discount, even at the beginning of your business. By sticking to your prices, charging what you’re worth, and keeping that dreaded “d-word” (discount) out of the equation, you put yourself in a business mindset. One to make money and bring you more business. Discounting your services to anyone sets a precedent that you’ll continue charging them below your market rate. And trust me when I say that discounting will just lead to resentment and unfulfilled feelings down the road. Your clients are paying for your time, your services, your equipment, and your years of experience. Value that. How do you know you’re charging what your services are worth? Do you suffer from imposter syndrome? How confident do you feel about your business? In This Episode: Why you shouldn’t listen to the mean voice in your head What imposter syndrome actually is Why you don’t have to have the paper perfect business in order to start finding clients How pricing and charging for your services put you in a business mindset What happens when you discount your services for anyone How your clients are paying for your years of experience What confidence is and where you can find it Quotes: “No one is immune from the thought that we’re playing in a game that we don’t belong. And unfortunately, we are in the likes of some really good and accomplished company.” (7:19) “Business is an exchange. An exchange of money for goods or services. And if you’re not exchanging your services for money, then I had to break it to you, but you’re not doing business. You’re wasting time and you’re losing money.” (9:54) “Don’t ever feel like you need to justify your pricing to anyone. Your pricing covers your service, hours, equipment, and experience.” (15:18) Links Find Dr.
Starting a business doesn’t have to be nearly as difficult as the internet makes it out to be. With the thousands of people searching Google for this every single day, you’d think someone would put together a simple step by step guide to starting your own business. Well, that someone did - me! In this episode of Women in Business, I’m giving you the no-BS, no-fluff blueprint to actually starting your service-based business, bootstrapping from the ground up, just like I did. These are the steps you should actually take with nothing extra thrown in there. One of the most important aspects to consider when starting your own service-based business is defining who you actually want to serve. You need to get specific here. You’re not going to want to serve every single person in the world or even every woman in the world! A more defined niche will actually help you find clients, not hinder you! Did you know that your limiting beliefs could actually be holding your business back from starting? Trust me when I say that if you want to build your business, you absolutely CAN, no matter what anyone else tells you. You just need to believe in yourself. When it comes to writing your business’s vision statement, I encourage you to think big. Think about what you really want to achieve with your business in 5, 10, 20 years time and write it down. If that’s providing a full-service business with employees, that’s great! If it’s staying as a freelancer, there’s no shame in that. I often tell you that your network is your net worth and this is especially true when starting your business. Find the people in your network who can help you build your website, do your graphics, write your copy - whatever it is you need help with, find someone in your network and build a relationship with them. Above anything else, it’s so important that you just start your business. It’ll never amount to anything if your ideas stay in your head. So here’s to launching imperfectly and growing from there. Are you thinking of starting your business? Do you let imposter syndrome hold you back? Who in your network can help you start your business right now? In This Episode: Why starting your business doesn’t have to be as hard as the internet will let you believe What steps you should take to actually start your service-based business Why it’s so important to define your target market when starting out How you might be limiting your business vision because of your own beliefs Why you need to think big when writing your vision statement How your network can help you get your business going Why you should just get started with your business Quotes: “Are you limiting your possibilities because you don’t see it’s possible? Because it is. It is if you have the right guidance.” (14:24) “Your target client isn’t just someone with money or even ‘women’. It needs to be a specific, detailed niche.” (20:55) “Let me tell you something. There’s another saying after ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’ and it’s ‘you don’t know what you do know.’ You have experience, skills, and abilities that people will pay you for.” (21:47) Links Freebie: Want To Set Your Business Up For Success Guide Find Dr.
It doesn’t matter how popular you are, you have to be profitable to be successful. Creating a successful business is more than just making a podcast or deciding to become a blogger. At the end of whatever marketing and content strategies you put out there, you need to have something that your audience wants to buy. I’m not saying you shouldn’t create a podcast, blog, or other series, but it should definitely be as an extension of your business, not your whole business. Your company needs to sell something that people want to buy. Because only when you’re actually bringing in a profit can your business be deemed successful. In fact, while you might be obsessed with how many likes you get on social media, those numbers don’t really matter! You need to be tracking other business metrics to truly see your success. Metrics like your sales revenue, net income, marketing strategies, and the customer acquisition. So how do you actually track your sales revenue? What factors do you need to keep on top of? Have you noticed a positive or negative trend in your sales? When you look at your sales revenue and industry as a whole, you’ll likely start to see patterns in your income. Pay attention and track everything that’s going on. Next you need to look at all your marketing efforts and track what performs better than others. Because I guarantee you that if you stick to two marketing tactics that are nearly identical, one will bring in better results. Lastly, you need to factor in the cost of your marketing compared to the cost of a new client. If it costs you the same amount of money in marketing as your new client will buy from you, you need to reevaluate. Do you invest time tracking your social media metrics? How do you calculate your sales revenue? What’s going on in your current business industry right now? In This Episode: How creating additional content to your business is just a tool to grow your brand awareness Why you need to create a company that sells something people will buy Which business metrics actually matter to the health of your business How to track your sales revenue Why you need to keep tabs on what’s going on in your business industry How to effectively track your marketing efforts What is the cost of customer acquisition Quotes: “If you want a business, you have to have something at the end of that line that people will find valuable enough to exchange value for. Period.” (6:53) “When figuring your sales revenue from this month to the next, you need to indicate what factors in the market have changed that would possibly affect that number either positively or negatively.” (10:32) “You have to isolate your independent variables so you know which one is moving the needle.” (16:49) Links Freebie: Why Being Popular Isn't The Same As Being Profitable Find Dr.
I’ve been in business for 16 years! In that time, I have learned so many valuable lessons that I’m sharing with you today so that you don’t have to wait 16 years to figure them out on your own. First of all, yes this episode is about the 10 lessons I’ve learned in 16 years of business, but I’m splitting it up into two episodes. In this episode, I’m talking about the first 5 lessons that I want to share with you. Now, I’m a total shoot from the hip, ask questions later kind of person. But after seeing the negative responses and consequences of responding brashly in business, I’ve learned that it’s not the best idea to be immediately reactive. In fact, you should take a second to pause and reflect on how something made you feel and how you can most appropriately respond before you actually do. Trust me, that extra time will save you a lot of headaches down the line. Company culture comes from the top, did you know that? And it doesn’t matter if you, as the CEO, want something to be in place, if it’s not being followed, or there’s an unspoken rule, it might not happen. Involve your team in developing what your company culture is. Figure out your values. And implement it across the board, from your daily attitude as CEO right down through reporting managers to your employees to help create a harmonious work environment. Speaking of your employees, micromanaging is the worst. Even if you have an employee who isn’t performing to the standard you think they should be, breathing down their neck and redoing the work they’re doing is not going to help the situation. How is that employee going to grow? And if they’re truly bad at their job - that’s on you, not them. You’ve hired them in that role. I’m not saying you should immediately fire them, but work with them, train them, to be better at their position or maybe even find another job role for them. As a business owner, you’re going to have to kiss a lot of frogs. No, I don’t mean romantically! But you will come across your share of lousy business connections, lazy employees, and potential partnerships that you come to realize are just not a good fit for you. It’s okay to sever these connections… and you shouldn’t feel guilty about it. For every frog you kiss, you learn more about what type of people you want to connect and work with. Lastly, there will come a time when members of your staff will leave your organization. It’s so easy to take it personally, I know I used to all the time, but most of the time, it’s not personal. And if you notice a pattern in why your employees are leaving, you should take the time to make positive changes in your company to fix that problem! Is your company’s culture important to you? Do you take the time to think before you respond to a heady situation? How do you feel when your employees quit? In This Episode: Why you should take time to formulate a positive response and reaction to a negative stimulus How to develop a positive company culture How your mood as a CEO can affect the entire office culture What happens when you include your staff in developing your company culture and values What happens when you micromanage your employees Why you should kiss frogs in your business How you should behave when your employees leave your company Quotes: “Company culture starts at the top. Women in Business: Inspirational Stories of Women Entrepreneurs
So you’ve decided to quit your job, congratulations! Whether you’re starting your own business or transitioning to a new role somewhere else, there are some guidelines you should follow. In this episode, I’m talking about the ten things I think you should know and do when you’re quitting your job. Whether you love your job or you hate it so much you’d rather do anything but, it’s important for you and your reputation to leave it with grace and dignity. There’d be few things worse than burning bridges that might impact your entire future. These 10 steps will help you leave with your head held high. First, make sure that you actually tell your boss or supervisor that you’re leaving, before you tell anyone else. Workplaces are hotbeds of gossip, so if you start blabbing to your co-workers first, the narrative leaves your hands. Plus, it’s just common courtesy to your supervisor, even if you didn’t see eye to eye. If you have a lot of strong emotions about your job, I always recommend writing a fictional resignation letter - one that doesn’t go beyond your sight. This lets you get out all your feelings of pent out anger or even about how much you loved your job before you approach your supervisor with your real letter. Which you absolutely should do in person, but keep it professional. And in this letter, make sure you’re giving at least two week’s notice - and that you’re working as productively during them. You can be let go for being company dead weight. Finish these week’s out working strong, training your replacement (if possible), writing your job manual, and leave with dignity, knowing you were a model employee for your last two weeks. If you’re transitioning to a new employer or even if you’re going self-employed, don’t bad-mouth your former one. You want to always be able to get a good reference from them. Plus, if you start spouting hate about your old employer, it actually shows a lot more about your character than how they treated you. Keep all these tips in mind and happy quitting! Are you thinking of leaving your job? Have you written a fictional resignation letter? How do you plan on preserving your reputation when you’re leaving your job? In This Episode: Why you need to tell your supervisor that you’re quitting before anyone else What power and catharsis comes with writing a fictional resignation letter Why you should always give at least two weeks notice when you resign How to finish your last two weeks working strong and with dignity Why you need to transition from your former employer in the most respectful way possible Quotes: “Even if you have a horrible experience with an even more horrible boss, keep your resignation letter short, sweet, professional, and to the point.” (12:12) “How you leave your current employer to go work for your new employer makes a big impact on the hiring manager at your new employer. They see it as the exact way how you would leave them.” (14:06) “Remember, you get to leave, but your reputation and the terms you leave on are completely up to you.” (18:52) Links Freebie: It's Quitting Time | How To Quit Your Job to Start Your Own Company Find Dr. The formula for a successful company is good leadership coupled with sound financial decisions… Are you ready to turn your business into a thriving successful business? When it comes to a business, having someone in a position of leadership isn’t always an indicator that it’s going to be successful. If that leader does not foster a sense of community, compassion, and responsibility, or they don’t make their employees feel valued, that company probably isn’t going to be successful. If you’ve been plagued by terrible bosses throughout your employed years, starting your own business might be the way you can be the employer you want to see in the world. You can actually be that role model and example for your employees. Good leadership goes hand in hand with smart financial decisions. On this episode, I’m going through what you need to know to help make these decisions. First, you need to understand your books. Even if you don’t know what everything means, you need to know how much money you have coming in and going out. You also need to make sure that you set up an emergency fund that can be used when you hit a snag in your cash flow, you’re not going to go into debt. Next, you need to know how much of your net revenue you have to set aside for your taxes. Because, and I hate to be that person, taxes are one of the only mandatory things you have to do in your life. If you’re not confident about exactly how much you need to set aside for your taxes, speak to an accountant you trust for financial advice. One of the good things about your taxes is that some of your necessary business expenses are tax-deductible. But which ones? Some of your equipment purchases, office space, maybe even your car - but it all depends on your individual business. Lastly, I’m giving you the low-down on business credit cards. Should you get one? In some cases, it’s the best way to build up your credit score for your business. However, credit cards can be a slippery slope, so tread these waters carefully. Do you feel comfortable when you look at your business ledgers? How long can your emergency fund sustain your business? Have you considered taking out a business credit card? In This Episode: Why leadership isn’t the most important thing you can look at for your company’s growth How starting your own business can let you be the employer you always wished you had Why knowing your books inside out is essential for a strong business What role an emergency fund plays in your business How much of your net revenue you should save for your taxes each month How to figure out what expenses are tax-deductible Why you need to grow credit for your business Quotes: “Leadership is only half the equation of business success. And it is a crucial piece, but it’s not the only piece. It just so happens that it’s the piece we tend to, as women, focus on because it’s more of what we’re comfortable with.” (7:40) “Don’t let yourself get stuck in a slow month with zero in back-up.” (10:46) “Only borrow what you absolutely must have to run your business.” (22:26) Links The Formula For Business Success Guide From Side Hustle To CEO Course Find Dr. Cortney Baker Online Join From Side Hustle to CEO on Facebook Keep up with everything Women In Business Follow me, Dr. Cortney Baker on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn KidsCare Home Health Are you a female millennial entrepreneur who wants to start or scale your service-based business but not sure where to start? Women in Business: Inspirational Stories of Women Entrepreneurs
Entrepreneurs are more likely than any other demographic to experience loneliness, depression, and other mental health issues. I’m here today to tell you that if you’ve felt like this, you’re not alone. I’ve also experienced my fair share of depression during my entrepreneurial rollercoaster. We’ve all been there; when we’re working behind a screen all day, we’re not really interacting with anyone. You might have some online connections you chat with here and there, but there’s really nothing like that in-person communication to boost your mood. Inevitably, the lack of social interaction will lead to loneliness. The future of entrepreneurship is changing already to be more open about mental health, depression, and loneliness. Because we are more likely to experience it, it’s time we open the conversation - and we are. And by talking about mental health, we’ll be contributing to making entrepreneurship a less lonely and even more accessible possibility. As entrepreneurs, we need to prioritize self-care every single day. Not when you feel like it, every day. You don’t have to have a long, luxurious bath every day unless you want to, but you need to include some aspects of loving yourself. These are things like getting enough sleep, eating healthy food, and talking to people outside your computer. You should also get a hobby that’s away from your computer. Running, crafting, going to yoga classes, or whatever it is you want to do will all help you disengage and decompress from every day stresses your business brings. I’d also recommend practicing gratitude every day. Whether you say one thing you’re grateful for every step you take to the bathroom or spend five minutes in the morning or night writing in your journal, this simple act helps keep your cortisol levels calm. Lastly, make sure you have a support network. This network preferably lives outside your computer, so you physically have to go to meet up and connect in real life. They might be a local women’s network or just a group of friends you can really unwind with. Do you have a support network? How often do you get outside your house for something that’s not business-related? Do you practice self-care? In This Episode: How working behind a screen all day can lead to loneliness Why entrepreneurs are more likely to experience depression than the general population What will happen when we open the conversation about mental health in entrepreneurship Why you have to prioritize self-care in your daily routine How having a hobby helps you disengage and decompress from your business How practicing gratitude helps you keep your stress hormones at bay Why you need to have someone or a group of people to talk to Quotes: “People can and they will admire you for your successes but they find a connection with your struggles.” (1:56) “A recent study conducted and published in Small Business Economics found that entrepreneurs were much more likely to deal with depression and other mental health issues when compared to the general population.” (8:27) “When your identity is your business, you set yourself up for a one-way path to crisis. In entrepreneurship, failure and rejection are necessary steps on the journey to success.” (16:13) “When you go through the dark, you have to shine the light so you can see your way out, and that’s what talking about it will do.” (21:53) Links The 1 Thing We Need to be Talking about in Entrepreneurship Guide From Side Hustle To CEO Course Find Dr.
Every business owner needs to learn the value of a cold pitch - and above that, how and who to deliver your cold pitches to. Once you have this practice down, business opportunities will really start opening up to you. But if there’s one thing so many women in business are hesitant about: it’s the cold pitch. But you just need to get over it. That fear that’s holding you back from making the cold pitch is preventing your business from growing. I’m telling you the secret to how to get that little negative voice in your head to finally shut up. First of all, you have to decide who you want to work with, be they companies or individuals, that you’re actually going to enjoy working with. This is a big part of why we choose a niche. You want to love what you’re doing and who you’re doing it for. You don’t want to be shouting into the wide expanse of the business world. Not everyone is going to want to work with you - and not everyone should work with you. Plus, you can’t physically pitch to every single business out there. So how do you make the perfect cold pitch? Find those companies you’d love to work with, figure out who is the best person there to make the pitch to, and show them how working with you will benefit them. The pitch is not about you! Finally, we’re talking about what to do when someone says “no” to your cold pitch. Don’t worry, it happens to everyone! But every no is a new opportunity awaiting you. Are you comfortable making a cold pitch? Do you know who you want to work with? How can you stand out from your oversaturated business market? In This Episode: Why you need to just get over it and get the word out about your business How to quiet the negative voice in your head Why you need to work with people and businesses you actually enjoy working with Who you should send your pitch to Why you shouldn’t pitch every single business you ever come across How you can stand out from an oversaturated market Why your pitch shouldn’t be about you and your business How you can appeal to your cold pitches by showing how you would value the potential client What you should remember when you hear “no” from a potential client Quotes: “Even if your client is a brand or a company, there’s still a person that you’re going to need to get to to pitch.” (4:05) “Work with people in business you’re actually going to enjoy working with. When you enjoy working with them, you’ll perform better, you’ll enjoy it more, your quality of work is better. It’s overall a better experience for both of you.” (4:29) “Don’t market your services with a one-size-fits-all approach. When you’re reaching out to potential businesses to pitch your services, do your research.” (7:40) “The magic happens in the pitch follow-up. And follow-up until you hear the word ‘no’.” (18:15) Links Free Guide: 5 Steps to Pitch Your Services Without Being “Salesy” From Side Hustle To CEO Course Find Dr.
Setting boundaries is important for every aspect of your life, including, and maybe especially, your new business. In fact, it’s so essential for your business, that I’d go as far as to say there are five business non-negotiables to protect your sanity! I’m speaking from personal experience in this episode. Every single one of these non-negotiables has been learned the hard way - from being in the position where I had to! That’s why I’m passing this information to you, so you don’t have to lose your sanity while running your business. First of all, you need to give yourself days off when you start. It’s easy to want to hustle all the time, but it’s actually counter-productive! Schedule your time off every week and stick to it. You’ll hopefully learn that slowing down will actually help your business speed up. You also need to set your business hours and stick to them. Start time, finish time, and everything in between. And communicate this to your clients, so they don’t expect a response to their email at 10 pm on a Monday. Next, you need to set and stick to realistic expectations. This is not only beneficial for you, but for your clients as well. If you’re transparent in how long it takes you to complete your work, and you stick to this, you’ll be much happier in your business. Similarly, you need to set and stick with your rates. I’ve previously talked about how you should set your rates, but it’s so important that you don’t waver. Of course, there are exceptions, but you need to be clear that these are one-off, special occasions and not to be expected or shared with anyone else. Are you ready to transform the way you run your business? When’s the last time you had a day off? Do you have set business hours? In This Episode: Why you need to give yourself days off when you start your own business How you can slow down in order to speed up How to set your perfect business hours and stick to them What happens to your life when you set realistic expectations with yourself and your clients Why you need to stand by your rates When you should get paid in exposure Quotes: “When you spend more time picking up the pace and speeding it up, it’s actually counter-productive.” (4:34) “Honor yourself and your loved ones with your days off as much as you would honor your clients and your meetings that you’ve got on your calendar.” (6:37) “You can’t please everyone and sometimes you get talked into turning something over before your standard turnover time or even before you’re ready. Maintain your boundaries and stand by your agreed upon commitment. Don’t let a client dictate when you’re going to have your own work completed.” (10:44) Links From Side Hustle To CEO Course Find Dr.
If you’re thinking about hiring your first employee, this episode of Women in Business is for you! The most important thing you need to know when you’re getting ready for your first hire is that you shouldn’t hire someone just because you’re busy. You don’t want to hire someone who ends up watching you be busy all day. So what do you need to do before you hire someone? First, you need to figure out exactly what tasks you do every day. Write down everything you do in a day, a week, a month, and mark what tasks you can outsource to someone. This is the start of your job description. But before you even think about advertising for an employee, you need to standardize how you work. You can’t expect someone to come into your business and work the way you want them to if you haven’t taken the time to write it out! So write down step-by-step how you work your way through each task. Guess what? You’ve just started your first procedures manual! As you write down every task, your manual will get fuller and more complete for your business. You can also then break your tasks down into monthly, weekly, and monthly buckets - you want your new employees to know when they need to complete their work. This manual will help you figure out whether you need to hire one generalist or multiple people to cover the tasks you need to outsource. And remember, you don’t need to go all-in with a full-time employee(s) right at the start, you can hire part-time and figure it out from there! Are you thinking of hiring your first employee? Do you know what tasks you would outsource? How will you pay your employee(s)? In This Episode: Where to begin the hiring process Why you shouldn’t hire just because you feel like you’re drowning in business How to write a job description for the position you’re hiring for Why you need to standardize your own processes before you hire anyone else How to create your first procedures and processes manual What your daily, weekly, and monthly buckets are Who you need to hire based on what tasks you need to outsource How to pay your first employee Quotes: “Just being busy isn’t a good enough reason to hire someone who’s just going to sit there and watch you be busy. If anything, it would be a colossal waste of money.” (10:45) “You can’t expect someone to know what you haven’t instructed them to do.” (13:32) “Position yourself as the owner of the company and free yourself from some of the daily, mundane tasks that keep you in the weeds so you can get out there and support that additional expense - your new hire.” (18:04) Links Get your free download for How To Hire Your First Employee Sign Up for My Free Webinar: The 5 Step Framework to Building Your Profitable Service-Based Business Find Dr.
If you ask any business owner what one of the hardest parts of starting was, you’re going to get the same answer: determining what they’ll charge. When you’re a service-based business, rather than a product-based one, there are so many different elements you need to keep in mind when figuring out your bottom line. Of course, once you figure out your bottom line, you need still need to make a profit! In this episode, I want to explain what the difference between a service-based and product-based business is. Most of the women that I work with offer a service, which is amazing, and offers so much flexibility in pricing. There are five different ways you can price your services: by the hour, by the project, experience-based, competitor-based, and value-based. And however you choose to price your services is up to you, but there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First things first, you need to determine what the baseline you need to bring in each month is. To do this, you need to calculate how much you’re paying out each month to run your business. You also need to consider how many hours you want to work each week. Then I’m taking you through the calculations you need to do so that you’re including all the other outlying costs for your business: tax, subcontracting, wages, and more. I’m also explaining why you need to know your initial business costs will be so that you can factor these into your overall hourly rate. When you’re determining your fixed project rate, you need to know all of these figures as well. But there are some benefits to charging a project rate over hourly. Maybe most notably that you can charge your rate while getting quicker at the work you’re doing. Have you thought about how you want to price your service-based business? Do you know your overhead costs? How much do your competitors charge? In This Episode: What’s the difference between a service-based and product-based business Why flexibility in setting your prices is both a good and bad thing What five different ways to charge as a service-based business are How you determine your baseline by looking at overhead costs How to calculate your hourly rate Why you need to know how much your initial business output will be What the benefits of a fixed project rate are Quotes: “But if you get your pricing strategy wrong, in either business, you may never recover from the error.” (3:14) “As a business owner, you get to choose what your profit margin is. And for a services business, a typical, healthy profit margin is generally between 10-30% of your rate.” (13:43) “You are a professional and your time is so valuable. As a service provider, all you have is your time, because you’re not selling products. Price your services based on the value you provide.” (17:14) Links Get your free download for How To Price Your Service-Based Business Sign Up for My Free Webinar: The 5 Step Framework to Building Your Profitable Service-Based Business Find Dr. Entrepreneurs make mistakes, it’s how they learn and grow their business. But there are some mistakes that almost every single business owner makes at the beginning that they don’t have to! This episode is about what those mistakes are and how you can fix them - sometimes even before you make them! Do you know why it’s so important for you to have an action plan when you’re starting your own business? It’s important to know why you’re building your brand, but also how you’re going to get there. When you have all these details ironed out, your confidence levels in your business will skyrocket. Planning your goals out is also necessary. I’m talking 6 months, 1 year, and 5-year goals to help you keep your business moving forward. In this episode, I also explain how you can turn those short term goals into long-term plans. Protecting yourself, your business, and your assets should be on your radar before you truly start going. And this starts with your business name - you need to legally protect it, and not just by registering an LLC. So make sure you know what legal nitty-gritty you need to cover when starting your own business. Lastly, it’s absolutely pivotal for you to have a strong and knowledgeable support system. Your support system works as your accountability team. People who know your business well so they can not only support you, but also reach out to their existing network, bounce ideas, and help you see new possibilities you might have missed. Have you set up your action plan? Where do you want to be in the next 6 months? Who can you count on for your business support? In This Episode: Why you need an action plan for your new business How your confidence levels can impact how you move forward in business How to turn your short-term goals into long-term plans What you need to do to make sure you’re legally safe and secure Why you need a strong and knowledgeable support system What qualities you need to be a successful entrepreneur How accountability groups can help you see new possibilities Quotes: “When you start the journey of entrepreneurship, you are 100% going to face hurdles.” (5:18) “Isn’t it so much more appealing to do everything right in the first place than getting entangled in a costly legal nightmare?” (14:56) “This group that holds you accountable has to have earned the right to speak into your life and hold you accountable because they are on the journey with you. They are holding you accountable by keeping your expectations in check.” (16:44) Links Sign Up for My Free Webinar: The 5 Step Framework to Building Your Profitable Service-Based Business Find Dr.
The entrepreneurial spirit is multi-faceted with lots of different components - some innate, some learned. But topping it all is mindset because when you approach business with the right frame of mind, anything can happen. However, not everyone has what it takes to start their own business. There are five major components to the entrepreneurial spirit. We’ve established it all comes down to mindset, but what kind of qualities do you need to have? First, it’s about confidence. Knowing you are good at what you do and being able to support your claims is so important. Potential clients respond positively to confidence. You’ll also need to be persistent. Persistent to contact potential clients, to try new avenues, to keep going. Did you know that human beings have an average attention span of seven seconds and usually need to be connected with at least seven times before you make a sale? Next, you’ll need to be resilient. I won’t lie to you - starting your own business is not an easy process. Somethings won’t work out; you’ll be rejected, you might even get a bad review. Are you just going to curl up and quit? No! That’s where your resilience comes into play. Like resilience, you need drive and determination to succeed when you’re starting your own business. If you’re not waking up and getting to work with excitement, you’re probably lacking some vital connection to what you’re doing. But don’t worry if your feelings towards your business change over time - that’s totally normal. Why do you want to start your own business? Can you meet deadlines when you don’t have a manager over your shoulder? Who do you want to work with? In This Episode: What the entrepreneurial spirit actually is Why you need to be confident to become an entrepreneur How persistence is vital to entrepreneurship How you can show your value to potential clients What a niche is and how narrowing it down helps you get clients Why you can’t follow up with a client, or potential client, too many times What resilience has to do with starting your own business How your relationship with your business will change as it grows How your drive relates to your purpose Why knowing your “why” isn’t enough when starting your own business Quotes: “If you are confident in yourself and your skills, and you can get the results that you promised, then there is no reason you shouldn’t be confident in what you have to offer as an entrepreneur.” (3:57) “You can achieve business ownership, but believing you’re worth it is the first step.” (5:37) “If you know your value then stand confidently in that.” (11:04) “A setback isn’t a step back, it’s a setup for a comeback. So why would you let a setback keep you down?” (14:38) “Discipline will need to kick in when your motivation runs out.” (20:13) Links Get your free guide on The Entrepreneurial Spirit Find Dr.
Do you have what it takes to start your own business? If you know that it’s not going to be smooth sailing, martinis at noon, totally glamorous, and always fun, you’re at least thinking you know what you’re in for. In this episode of Women in Business, I’m telling you the truth about the side hustle. Just like having kids, there is never a perfect time to start your business. You might start it as a side hustle, or you might go all in, but whatever way you do it, there are some things you need to know. It’s HARD working a full-time day job while building your side hustle empire on the side - harder still if you’ve got family and other personal commitments to keep up with, too. So many women find themselves completely stressed out when their side hustle starts taking off. They’re making money, but losing time. They literally feel like they can’t catch a breath. But there is a way you can balance all the hours in your day so you don’t feel like you’re going insane. I always advise that you take advantage of the time that you’re still getting a regular paycheck. Do things like learning new skills or up-leveling your existing ones, getting your business entities set up and legal, and start setting aside money in your savings account. In fact, getting substantial buffer funds built up might be the most important thing you can do when you’re starting your own business. Lastly, I’m talking you through both the right and the wrong ways to quit your job. What to do if you absolutely hate it and can’t face another day. What you should do if you’re friends with your boss. And how you can leave your 9-5 with your reputation still intact. Are you ready to take the leap from side hustle to CEO? Do you feel completely overwhelmed with the amount of work you have on? How long can you support yourself using your savings funds? In This Episode: Why there is never a perfect time to start your business How hard it is to build a side hustle while working full-time, especially when you’re not fully committed What happens when your side hustle business starts to be successful and profitable How you can balance your hours between all your personal and business duties How you can uplevel your skills and learn new ones while you’re still at your full-time job How you can take preventative measures to set up your finances before you start your own business Why you should prioritize building a savings account What you need to know when quitting your day job Quotes: “There is never a perfect time to start a business, there are much better times than others. And it will always be a risk, a leap of faith, and it will be scary. But nothing great ever comes from our comfort zones!” (4:32) “If you’re not willing to commit a few months to really invest your time into getting things going, then don’t start. If you think for a second that you’ll be able to put in a few hours into your business here and there and then coast… if it was that easy, then everyone would do it.” (7:27) “Quitting your job is a huge risk and so is starting a company.” (12:04) “I don’t care how close you are with your boss, you have got to put your notice in writing. Give them two weeks' notice and clearly spell out what your last day is going to be. Because this will cover you in case something goes sour.” (19:24) Links Grab your copy of The Truth About the Side Hustle Join From Side Hustle to CEO on Facebook Keep up with everything Women In Business Follow me, Dr. Cortney Baker on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn KidsCare Home Health Are you a female millennial entrepreneur who wants to start or scale your service-based business but not sure where to start? Women in Business: Inspirational Stories of Women Entrepreneurs
Anyone can start a business, but it takes planning, preparation, and dedication to succeed in it. That’s where your business plan comes in. A business plan is a vital, living document that will give you the structure of your business. Today on Women in Business, I’m explaining what the role of a business plan is. Why you should have one and what elements you should include in it. But rest assured, business plans are adaptable, to an extent. They serve as a living guide to where your business is going. Especially when you’re going to approach potential investors or mentors, having a business plan lets them see that you’re serious and mean business. A business plan gives these mentors an important look into your vision for the future. And with your mission statement, they, and you will have something to consistently strive towards. Your business plan will also focus on who your target audience is. It’s easy to want your target audience to be everyone, however, you’ll find that when you narrow your audience down and pinpoint exactly what type of businesses or people is your ideal, you’ll get more business. Putting your base rate of pay in your business plan is also a good practice. Not only will this figure keep you right in terms of what to charge your first customers, but it will also help you with future financial projections. You should also examine what your competitors are doing and include this analysis in your business plan. This lets you see what they’ve been doing well and what’s getting results, and what’s not. You can include these insights into your marketing plan. Lastly, you’ll want to think about what your long-term role in the business will be. Will you be the sole employee for the foreseeable future? Do you plan to outsource a lot of work as you grow? Maybe you have plans to stop working in your business to focus on working on it. Have you thought about your business plan? Do you know what your mission statement is? How are your competitors marketing themselves? In This Episode: What role a business plan has when starting your own business Why you should plan early, with gaps in what you want to do, rather than dive in without anything written down What your mission statement should consist of Why it’s so important for you to narrow your target audience How to figure out a base rate for pricing your services Why you need to look at your competitors in order to see how your business is set apart What your role in your business will be long-term Quotes: “Your business plan is the skeleton of your business. It gives you an overview of what you’re going to be doing, so you can start to fill in the gaps.” (6:04) “Always keep in mind how much you are worth and don’t undersell yourself.” (13:51) “If you are living with caviar taste on a bologna budget, we’ve got some issues. And it’s going to be extremely hard to get your business off the ground.” (15:32) “You will never scale if you don’t empower your people to do what they’ve been hired to do.” (20:57) Links Grab your copy of How To Write A Business Plan! Women in Business: Inspirational Stories of Women Entrepreneurs
It takes a lot more than having a good idea to start your own business. From my 16 years in business, I’ve figured out a thing or two. Today, I’m sharing what four things you need to know when going from side hustle to CEO. By far, the most important thing when you’re making the switch is to have confidence in yourself. If you don’t believe in you and your idea if you don’t have faith that you’re going to succeed if you don’t think that you can make it - how can you expect anyone else to take you seriously? Surrounding yourself with other entrepreneurs who inspire you and will encourage you will also contribute to your success. Without your sounding board and cheer squad, it’s hard to know if what you’re doing is actually the right thing. Today, I’m talking about the four things you need to know when you’re starting your side hustle. Things like knowing where your time goes and accounting for almost every single minute of it. And learning what method of time blocking works for you. I’m also sharing a few financial tidbits you should know, like what type of bank you should go with. And, maybe the most important lesson, finding your tribe of amazing, motivated women who can support you and push you every step of the way. Have you found your tribe? Do you believe in yourself? How much time are you wasting every day? In This Episode: Why you need to have confidence in yourself to be an entrepreneur How having a group of like-minded entrepreneurs can encourage you to go further in business Why time management matters when you’re building your own business How time blocking can help you reduce distractions Why you should find a bank that’s friendly for a small business What financial questions you need to ask yourself when you start your business How you can find your tribe of motivational women you can trust for referrals and feedback Why you need to stay the course and keep focused Quotes: “When you put your phone in airplane mode, I know it’s going to help me. It helps reduce all those notifications. That’s been super helpful for me to get laser focused and really GSD - get stuff done.” (8:00) “When looking for a bank to benefit your business needs, don’t think of what your needs are just for today. Women in Business: Inspirational Stories of Women Entrepreneurs
Are you thinking of leaving the corporate life behind to start your own business? With recent statistics from organizations like Lean In that showing that we’re at least 100 years away from true gender equality at C-level management, becoming an entrepreneur can be a more viable path to leadership. Today, I’m sharing what you need to know and ask yourself before you make the change. I have the best job in the world. I mentor and guide millennial women to become the entrepreneurs they’ve always wanted to be. It’s so much more than figuring out what kind of business they want to start - it’s also about asking yourself the right questions. In today’s episode of Women in Business, I’m sharing with you the five key concepts and seven questions you need to ask yourself when you’re getting ready to leave the 9-5. I’ve also put this together in a PDF for you to download and work through. The five key concepts you need to know are all about knowing the lingo. Learning these financial and technical terms will help you understand how your business runs - from revenue to cash flow. The seven questions to ask yourself cover everything from your current client base and who you’re serving already to how you can control your marketing costs. And finally, what the best way to manage your finances is… including when YOU can start getting paid. Are you thinking of starting your own business? Do you know what the difference between profit and revenue is? How long can you, the business owner, go without getting paid from your business? In This Episode: Why I mentor and guide women to become entrepreneurs What are the five key concepts and seven questions to ask when leaving the 9-5 What financial and technical terms you should know when starting your own business Why you should start your business with a current client base How to figure out if your recurring expenses are absolutely essential How you can control marketing costs Why business owners are the very last part of the business to get paid How you can incentivize clients to pay you early What the best system for paying your business’s bills is Quotes: “Determining which expenses were absolutely necessary would help determine my bottom line or the minimum amount I needed the business to bring in monthly in revenue to even survive.” (10:15) “We had to figure out how long we could support this business, which was our first priority before we could determine if we could get paid.” (12:18) “There are two ways to handle invoices. When you’re starting out, put your net terms on your contracts and on your invoices as 10 business days, that’s two weeks. Or, you can have your net terms be 30 days and build in your cushion to the ability to offer a small discount for payment in full within 5-10 days.” (15:10) Links: >>>>Grab The 5 Key Concepts & 7 Questions to Ask Yourself PDF
Women in Business: Inspirational Stories of Women Entrepreneurs
The difference between a woman who thinks she wants to start her own business and the woman who has comes down to one essential thing: Mindset. Opening up for yourself takes courage, determination, dedication, and an attitude that you can absolutely do it, even if it’s hard. On today’s episode of Women in Business, I’m sharing my own story about how I shifted my mindset to start KidsCare Home Health. When I was newly qualified as a therapist, I worked for a local company that held me down. There were no secrets that all the employees were easily replaceable and morale was low throughout. I made the decision that I could either job hop and be treated like this no matter where I worked, or I could forge out on my own. While I decided that I wanted to start my own business, I didn’t immediately take the leap. Through one reason and then another, including a pregnancy and a new home, having a stable income was what I “should” do. So I stayed. But then something happened that shifted my entire mindset on starting my own business. And yes, that shift can happen as quickly to you as it did to me! You shouldn’t give up on your dreams, and if becoming an entrepreneur is one of them, then stay the course. Where do you keep your box of dreams? How long has it been since you’ve looked in it? I challenge you to find a picture of yourself as a child and tell her you’re going to pursue her dreams. You can do this! And then join me in my Facebook group, From Side Hustle to CEO to share your picture and story with us. In This Episode: What you need to do before you quit your day job Why mindset is so important for entrepreneurs How confidence levels impact women’s career advancement What happens when you stand up to the naysayers How one act can change you to get in the right notice to open your own business Quotes: “Nearly 80% of the women that I spoke to talked about how they lacked confidence, in one aspect or another.” (3:22) “We have allowed fear to rule and fear is running rampant. Fear has been our excuse to play small.” (5:10) “Do it. Do it for her, do it for you, do it for your children, do it for your legacy, do it for your future.” (20:10) Links: Join From Side Hustle to CEO on Facebook Keep up with everything Women In Business Follow me, Dr. Cortney Baker on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn KidsCare Home Health Are you a female millennial entrepreneur who wants to start or scale your service-based business but not sure where to start? Dr. Cortney Baker is on a mission to change the world – one woman, one mother, one daughter and one legacy at a time. Cortney earned her Master’s degree from Southern Illinois University and founded KidsCare Home Health. In 2005, Dr. Cortney suffered a pulmonary embolism and in 2012 endured a stroke that required a 7-hour brain surgery. She has also authored Unlimited: Conquering the Myth of the Glass Ceiling and the best-selling book, The 10 Dos and Don’ts for Business Leadership: Lessons to Lead Effectively. When not getting lost or making a stop at Whataburger for her beloved Diet Coke, Dr. Cortney resides near Dallas with her husband, two children, two dogs, and a rescue cat.
