Whether it's in the street, on public transport or at home, almost all of us use headphones or earphones to listen to music. Now music might bring us joy and a whole lot of other emotions, but when it's too loud, it can also represent a risk for hearing health. The same is also true when going to entertainment venues like nightclubs, bars, music concert arenas and sports stadia. The danger comes when the sound level gets too high, we're exposed to it for too long, or worse, both. What are healthy listening levels then? Are there any warning signs to look out for? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: What is future faking? Why are we so fascinated by true crime? We're often told to listen to recordings of music that we're working on. And we often tell our students to do so as well, but is there any research which suggests that this benefits the learning process in any way? A 2012 study takes a look at this question, and compares both active and passive listening to see what sorts of benefits there might (or might not) be:Get all the nerdy details here:Does Listening to Music Benefit the Music Learning Process?* * *Have you ever wondered why it is exactly that things often sound better at home than they do on stage? If you've been confused (and frustrated) by the inconsistency of your performances, I put together a FREE 4-minute quiz called the Mental Skills Audit, which will help you pinpoint your mental strengths and weaknesses, and figure out what exactly to adjust and tweak in your preparation for more consistently optimal performances. It's 100% free, takes only 4 minutes, and you'll get a downloadable PDF with a personalized breakdown of where you stand in six key mental skill areas. You'll also get the Pressure Proof Practice Challenge, a free 1-week email course where you'll learn specific practice strategies that will help you perform your best, even under pressure. In this episode we explore ways to stop listening to music. Recognizing this as an addiction is the first step. It's a tough journey; it requires discipline and mental effort. But the moment you realize that music isn't essential for contentment and that you're doing this for the sake of Allah, the struggle becomes worthwhile. Understanding why we're quitting music is vital. Yes, it's haram, and while some argue over its permissibility, the message is clear: modern music isn't in line with Islamic teachings. Allah has forbidden it for a reason – it creates an artificial happiness, affecting our devotion in prayer and, consequently, our faith. We go over being mindful of what enters our mental space from platforms such as TikTok, and controlling what we consume, replacing music with halal alternatives like Quran or lectures, gradually decreases our reliance on it. Whenever a person engages with music--when a piano student practices a scale, a jazz saxophonist riffs on a melody, a teenager sobs to a sad song, or a wedding guest gets down on the dance floor--countless neurons are firing. Playing an instrument requires all of the resources of the nervous system, including cognitive, sensory, and motor functions. Composition and improvisation are remarkable demonstrations of the brain's capacity for creativity. Something as seemingly simple as listening to a tune involves mental faculties most of us don't even realize we have. Larry S. Sherman, a neuroscientist and lifelong musician, and Dennis Plies, a professional musician and teacher, collaborate to show how our brains and music work in harmony. They consider music in all the ways we encounter it--teaching, learning, practicing, listening, composing, improvising, and performing--in terms of neuroscience as well as music pedagogy, showing how the brain functions and even changes in the process. Every Brain Needs Music: The Neuroscience of Making and Listening to Music (Columbia UP, 2023) draws on leading behavioral, cellular, and molecular neuroscience research as well as surveys of more than a hundred musical people. It provides new perspectives on learning to play, teaching, how to practice and perform, the ways we react to music, and why the brain benefits from musical experiences. Written for both musical and nonmusical people, including newcomers to brain science, Every Brain Needs Music is a lively and easy-to-read exploration of the neuroscience of music and its significance in our lives. Melek Firat Altay is a neuroscientist, biologist and musician. Her research focuses on deciphering the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders. People who blush know it can be embarrassing. That begs the question – why do people blush in the first place? This episode begins with a brief discussion about why people blush and the purpose it serves. https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/bering-in-mind/why-we-blush-the-social-purpose-of-showing-embarrassment/ Have you ever found yourself hurrying to do something, even when there is no need to hurry? Many of us are just stuck in that mode. No matter what we are doing, we try to do it quickly. That turns out to be a big problem. Doing things fast often comes at a price and doing things slower can have immense benefits according to Carl Honore author of the book In Praise of Slowness (https://amzn.to/43GRlXN). Listen as Carl makes the case for turning down the speed of life so that life itself becomes much more enjoyable. You are surrounded by music. You intentionally listen to music you enjoy but you also hear it in the store and on the elevator. It's in TV shows and movies – music is everywhere. And people seem to want it and love it. So, what does music do for us? That is what Larry Sherman is here to reveal. Larry is professor of neuroscience at the Oregon Health and Science University and has given lectures on music and the brain throughout the world. He is author of a book called Every Brain Needs Music: The Neuroscience of Making and Listening to Music. (https://amzn.to/3JdFDf8).
