Dr. Grumet also introduces his second book, The Purpose Code, released in early 2025.  He distinguishes between “Big P” purpose (audacious, goal-driven pursuits) and “little p” purpose (process-oriented joy), advocating for the latter to enhance happiness and longevity. This episode offers physicians and listeners practical strategies to align their lives with meaningful activities, emphasizing community and personal fulfillment over financial gain.Three Actionable Takeaways:Focus on Process, Not Goals – Embrace activities you love for their own sake, like podcasting or reading, rather than tying purpose to specific outcomes like fame or wealth.Leverage Available Time – Use your free time—five to six hours daily per the U.S. Time Study—to pursue purposeful activities, even alongside a disliked job.Build Meaning First – Address past narratives (hero vs. victim stories) to establish a sense of “enough,” paving the way for joyful, purpose-driven actions in the present.About the Show:The Physician's Guide to Doctoring covers patient interactions, burnout, career growth, personal finance, and more. He was an Assistant Professor, first at Northwestern University and then at The University of Chicago. He has been a medical director of several nursing homes, started multiple palliative care programs in extended care facilities, and is an associate medical director for a hospice provider. This week we shredded our vision board and fed it to some ornamental carp, purely to win the approval of author, critic and quite possibly the world first demotivational speaker, Patrick Freyne. Before becoming the enormously popular columnist and critic for the Irish Times, Patrick spent his 20s chasing the rock star dream. But while the life of big hair, hard drugs and tight trousers wasn't to be, it did give Patrick the time and space required to be one of the creative world's leading authors, thinkers and sense-talkers. His book ‘Ok, Let's Do Your Stupid Idea' is a glorious celebration of curiosity, experimentation and letting your heart lead the way. And now he's on a mission to dismantle the cult of ‘Big P' productivity and remind people that ‘maximising your potential' is a poor substitute for living your life.  This episode is dedicated to Patrick's wife Anna Carey, who has been his biggest influence. In the television show The Sopranos, the character of "Big P*ssy" was based on a New York or New Jersey mobster targeted because of his sexual antics, but in Italy, there was a similar situation involving a highly respected hitman who stepped out of line by loving and wanting to make a life with the man he loved.  Anthony “Bubbles” Torres was a character, a creation. He tended to amuse and sometimes irritate people. On the night he was killed, witnesses saw the beginnings of a confrontation and Torres's murder. Years later, police struggle to solve the case.  In my research into the history of indecent proposals and indecent advances and the role of the homosexual panic used in court to explain murder, I've learned something new. In the later 1960s and all of the 1970s, there was a rash of robberies targeting gay men. It became so excessive that both Democratic and Republican politicians sought to cool the temperature when it came to some of the laws and rhetoric around homosexuality. Those efforts were shot down, of course, but the awareness on the part of defense lawyers that their clients might just be seen as a thief attempting to exploit a gay man made the homosexual panic defense even more urgently needed.  The cases based on people meeting up on apps are an ever-evolving story. Is it any more dangerous than meeting someone at a bar at 3 am? When imagining an open relationship, neither Scott nor his husband couldn't possibly imagine how it would end.    Filippo Gangitano - Gay in the mob Anthony “Bubbles” Torres -Murdered on a San Francisco street Harold St. John - AWOL, Kidnapping, and Homosexual panic Bobby Scott - Murdered on a Date

Summary I had the privilege to sit down with Jordan Grumet, author of the brilliant new book The Purpose Code and host of The Earn & Invest Podcast. In this conversation, Jordan shares his journey from being a physician to discovering the importance of purpose in life, particularly in retirement. He discusses the paradox of purpose, the difference between Big P and Little P Purpose, and how societal expectations can lead to anxiety around finding purpose. Jordan emphasises the need to create and build purpose rather than simply searching for it, and highlights the importance of community and connections in achieving fulfillment and happiness.  Jordan and I explore the concepts of purpose, identity, and the flawed notion of retirement. We discuss how individuals often strive for external validation through accomplishments, but true fulfillment comes from understanding one's identity and engaging in meaningful activities. Our discussion emphasises the importance of time over money, the impact of little-p purpose in life, and the common regrets people have at the end of their lives. Ultimately, Jordan encourages you to focus on the journey of life rather than the destination, and to seek out what truly lights you up. Key Takeaways Purpose is essential for a fulfilling life, especially in retirement. Big P Purpose can lead to anxiety and frustration. Little P Purpose focuses on the process and is more attainable. Creating purpose involves identifying what lights you up. Community and connections are vital for happiness. People often replace work-based purpose with similar frameworks in retirement. Meaning is about understanding our past, while purpose is about present actions. Happiness comes from both meaning and purpose working together. Investing in personal passions can inspire others, especially children. The journey to enoughness is crucial for finding true fulfillment. We often strive for external validation through accomplishments. True fulfillment comes from understanding our identity. Retirement should be viewed as a journey, not a destination. Time is always more important than money. Money is a tool, but little-p purpose moves the needle. Many people regret not pursuing their true passions. Success is less important than the effort and journey. Living with purpose can lead to a peaceful end of life. We should focus on what lights us up in life. The concept of enough is often smaller than we think. Sound Bites "We need to put purpose first." "Big P Purpose is associated with anxiety." "Little P Purpose focuses on process, not goals." "You have to build and create purpose." "Purpose is a conduit to people." "Happiness is meaning and purpose together." "You can't purpose your way to enough." "Identity is based not on goals, but on actions." "Retirement is a flawed concept." "Money is a mirage." Today's Money Tales episode is about purpose. Purpose is something we often talk about on Money Tales because, in our experience, when people align their relationship with money to their purpose, they make more satisfying and confident money decisions. Dr. Jordan Grumet joins us again on Money Tales. Since we last spoke with him, Jordan has been spending a lot of time talking and speaking about purpose. When he shared his message about purpose with audiences, he encountered something surprising: people weren't leaving inspired, they felt anxious. This “purpose anxiety,” as Jordan calls it, comes from society's obsession with what he dubs, “Big P Purpose”, the idea that happiness lies in discovering some grand, singular mission in life. Jordan invites us to embrace “Little p purpose” instead. It's about finding joy in the everyday; the simple things we love doing, the processes that light us up. By focusing on these small, tactile joys, we can take the weight off the search for “Big P” purpose and make it something approachable, fulfilling, and even fun. Jordan, born in Evanston, Illinois in 1973, found the spark to become a doctor after a deeply personal event reshaped his life's trajectory. The unexpected loss of his father, an oncologist, ignited a passion within him to practice medicine and instilled a unique vantage point that later melded seamlessly with his financial expertise. This convergence of roles has spurred him to explore profound notions like wealth, abundance, and financial independence with a thoughtful and critical lens. Completing his studies at the University of Michigan, Jordan earned his medical degree from Northwestern University before embarking on a journey in Internal Medicine in Northbrook, Illinois. Presently, he serves as an associate medical director at Unity Hospice. With a profound understanding of both medicine and finance, Jordan unveiled his thoughts through blogging, specifically focusing on financial independence and wellness. This passion culminated in the launch of the Earn & Invest podcast in 2018. His dedication bore fruit in 2019 when he was honored with the Plutus Award for Best New Personal Finance Podcast, followed by consecutive nominations for Best Personal Finance Podcast of the year in 2020 and 2021. In August 2022, Jordan's literary pursuit took shape as his book, Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life was published by Ulysses Press. His second book, The Purpose Code, will be published January 2025 by Harriman House Press. Jordan's journey intertwines medical insight and financial wisdom, resonating deeply with those seeking a balanced, meaningful life. Click here to listen to our first episode with Jordan.

Is your "purpose" making you anxious? Do you feel like everyone online is "living their best life" except for you? Then you've come to the right place. It's January and you're probably knee-deep in resolutions that may or may not last past the first week. But forget the trendy diets and the overly ambitious gym routines. This year, we're going deeper and talking about a purpose reboot - not the "new you" version fueled by fleeting motivation, but the kind built on self-awareness, intentional choices, and a healthy dose of skepticism about the pressures to optimize our lives. This week, we sit down with the brilliant Dr. Jordan Grumet (aka Doc G) to talk about his latest book "The Purpose Code." Jordan, a former hospice doctor and a 90s hip-hop head, is not here for the fluffy, Instagrammable version of purpose. He's no stranger to the intersection of hard choices and meaning and he's here to break down what actually makes life feel meaningful. We dive into:The “Big P” purpose trap (think: social media, fame, riches, etc.) and why it might be sabotaging your happiness. The secret sauce of "Little P" purpose (think: the things that actually make you feel alive)How religion and social media can be both a blessing and a curse in the purpose departmentWhy you need to be the hero in your story, not the victim of your pastHow to use your money as a tool for fulfillment, not a checklist of achievementsThe parental purpose myth (this one is controversial, y'all)What real legacy looks like…is our legacy up to us to decide? Is searching for your life's purpose causing more anxiety than fulfillment? Jordan Grumet, a former doctor turned author and podcaster, discovered that chasing "Big P" purpose – those audacious, society-approved goals – often leads to burnout and emptiness. Instead, he advocates for embracing "Little P" purpose: the small, joy-filled activities that light us up, which paradoxically can create deeper impact and meaning than grand aspirations ever could. And how people color-code themselves and their activities to work online. Subconscious "MBWA" mentality.[19:04 - 20:18] "How should we be looking at this?" Running reports to understand behavior and employee output during the pandemic[20:18 - 22:49] Talking about trust in teams, being curious about where people are mentally, and the pandemic causing people to wake up to see how we could work differently.[22:49 - 25:03] Decentralized responsibility for workplace design and employee experience is fuel for success[25:04 - 27:08] Four fundamental needs in wellbeing: Health, Financial, Mental, and Physical[27:08 - 29:53] Cali asks Dane about human bodies working on fumes, and Dane references Dan Miller, a health coach. He talks about how, chemically, our bodies aren't designed to run on adrenaline and cortisol all day and how modern life triggers those chemicals via social media, phones, email, and more.[29:53 - 34:48] Recognizing burnout early: prioritizing sleep and exercise, asking for help, having a list of people to keep you on track[35:36 - 41:46] Clarity is essential for successful teams now and in the future. Big "P" purpose and Small "p" purpose[41:47 - 43:20] "We're losing the thread, we're losing the plot in the story, and we need to bring it back"[43:28 - 47:56] Dane recaps the interview with Cali

The ball that was found after three minutes is lost either way, and therefore can not be used at all. Firstly, we cover a few Clubland Stories:- Mr Roberts wants to know what happens when a struck ball doesn't make its way out of a Red Penalty Area. This comes under Rule 17.2.- Colin wants to know if he proceeded correctly when his ball was stuck up a tree. He dropped within two club-lengths of where the ball was, and this was under Rule 19.2.- Mr Roberts goes again with another tricky one and Blakey and Podcast disagree on what spray foam is deemed to be. But they do agree Mary was able to get some free relief.- Chip gives us a situation that is probably pretty common in Clubland, where a player tries to play a provisional ball for a ball that most likely went into a penalty area. GRQOTW 106 - Big P has hit his tee shot into the red penalty area running down the right side of the 14th hole. After two minutes of searching, he finds and identifies his ball. He makes a stroke at the ball and only advances it 3m. Frustrated, he makes another stroke at it from inside the PA moving it very little and makes another stroke. Very frustrated, he says he is returning to the teeing area to start the hole again.Despite some objections from others in the group, he returns to the teeing area, tees up a ball and makes a stroke, and finishes the hole. There are no players behind waiting to hit.How many penalty strokes must Big P add to his hole score? . . A smile from a stranger The sun rising every morning A hug from someone you love Helping out a neighbor A high-five in the mirror Checking in on a friend Showing up Love is expressed in so many ways. Receive it all and express it every single day.   LISTENER EMAILS: Email from Donnetta: I'm catching up on the Bobby Bones Show podcast (I'm way behind!) and just heard the segment about one of your kids going by a different name at school. I love that you are trying to be supportive of your kid in their name choice. When I was in 4th grade, I wanted so badly to be Kelly Kapowski from Saved by the Bell, and I was tired of people struggling with my name (and mocking my last name, which was Stonerock....lots of Flintstones jokes made at my expense), so I started signing my assignments with the name Kelly. My math teacher (which was at a private school) decided to keep me from getting the grades I earned because "there's no Kelly in this class" and without my name on a paper (in a class of 8, mind you. Process of elimination should have been pretty simple), I got a zero. When my parents heard about it, I got into so much trouble for trying to change my name because they had put time and effort into my name. I remember being so angry and feeling like they didn't care about my feelings or opinions, nor were they interested in listening to anything I had to say.  All that to say, it actually helps my inner child to hear your very different approach to a similar situation.Email from Kayla: You asked in a recent the 5th thing episode about whether episode titles affect how we listen. I'm sure it's different for everyone but I personally do enjoy getting a little glimpse of what the episode is going to entail, so that I can gauge if it would be a good time for me to listen to a particular episode based on my mood. For example, I recently skipped one about grief because while it's been 11 years since my dad passed, I just wasn't in a place that day to listen to anything heavy or grief related. While I like the idea of a cute title such as “food, free people, & freeing your mind”, I really appreciate the titles that provide some insight as to what the episode covers.  Love everything y'all do! keep it up! Email from Hannah: Just started listening to your podcast, so I'm going back and listening to past episodes. Just listen to your newest episode today and I'm not going to lie if I see a title that has nothing to do with me or something that I'm not interested in knowing or learning about. I have skipped it. I love your show so far. I listen to Bobby bones show all the time and one day I looked your name up on Apple Podcasts and found this one!4 THINGS GRATITUDE: Amy and Kat both share what they're currently thankful for in these 4 categories: -Food or Drink -TV Show or Movie -IG Follow -Book & MORE!!!   HOSTS:Amy Brown // RadioAmy.com // @RadioAmy Kat Defatta // @Kat.Defatta // @YouNeedTherapyPodcast // YouNeedTherapyPodcast.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's quote is from Anne Lemott: “Help is often the sunny side of control.” This led Amy to think of a scene from Jerry Maguire: “help me help you.” Kat reveals that she has never seen Jerry Maguire….what??? Amy gives her homework to watch it with Big P. There's also a line in the movie that a lot of people found very romantic, but it is actually asking someone else to make you happy and that's not romantic…it's unhealthy. ALSO DISCUSSED:-How to achieve work/life harmony??-Questions you can ask yourself to shift perspective for harmony-Amy & Kat's favorite songs-Email from Emily about slow blinking to bond with cats…which led to Kat's second homework assignment: slow blinking to Big P to see if he responds to it like cats do.  HOSTS:Amy Brown // RadioAmy.com // @RadioAmy Kat Defatta // @Kat.Defatta // @YouNeedTherapyPodcast // YouNeedTherapyPodcast.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Two ducks showed up in Amy's backyard and she thinks it's a sign. Kat isn't so sure about it though...she thinks Amy needs to call animal control. Amy tries to convince her by sharing the meaning of seeing ducks, as it totally matches her life right now: "Two ducks are also generally seen as symbols of new beginnings or change. This is because they have the ability to adapt to new environments easily and quickly. They are also known for being able to find food and shelter in even the harshest conditions. As such, they can be seen as a reminder that no matter what challenges we face in life, we always have the potential to overcome them." The two in Amy's yard are clearly in love and going to have ducklings....similar to Kat & Big P!! Obviously the quotes (yes, multiple) for this episode are duck related, like this one: "Be like a duck. Calm on the surface, but always paddling like the dickens underneath." - Michael Caine Amy even shares a handful of duck jokes. This is our fav: Why did the duck go to the chiropractor? To get his back quacked. A listener named Sarah emailed in to share that she's so thankful that she learned about Mel Robbins by listening to the 5th Thing! Mel posted this quote the other day and we love it: "Enough with the overthinking. Nobody gives a crap. Do it." Amy & Kat go over a few recent posts from Mel including one about ADHD & and one about knowing that you need to do something, but being too scared to do it!  Thanks & Have The Day You Need To Have!!! This week is a special week because Patrick, AKA Big P, AKA Kat's boyfriend joins the podcast for the FIRST TIME (and hopefully not the last). Have you ever found yourself crying over something like mustard being put on your burger when you asked for ketchup or getting tots instead of fries? How about getting cream cheese on your bagel when you asked for butter? Chances are- you know exactly what we are talking about and this week Kat is walking listeners through the most recent time she cried over getting the wrong food order. Why do small inconveniences sometimes take away our ability to utilizes rational thinking and drive us to make these mountains out of molehills? What is underneath our inability to regulate our emotions in the moment? Kat talks about how she processed her "dramatic" moment and brings Patrick on to give his take on what he saw going on as it was happening.
