Interesting episode of the Hot Jazz Network Podcast with host George Cole picking the brains of a musically dynamic duo, Miss Maybell (Lauren Sansaricq) and Charlie Judkins.Currently engrossed in a fun project researching unrecorded songs from 1899-1929, working with the Library of Congress and sourcing sheet music from antique shops or relatives of songwriters. They'll be recording a selection of these songs on an album with Rivermont Records. Lauren and Charlie perform as Miss Maybell & The Jazz Age Artistes playing a large repertoire of early Jazz and Blues from the 1910's - 30's. They source their tunes from dusty old 78 records and antique sheet music and give new life to songs from bygone eras. Miss Maybell sings (beautifully!), plays the washboard, banjo, and the guitar. California's bad Valley fever season this year. Capital Stage's season kicks off with “Fairview.” The Hot Jazz Jubilee returns over Labor Day weekend. Finally, Insight host Vicki Gonzalez shares an update on her breast cancer treatment. Valley Fever Season in CA Earlier this year, five people at a music festival in Kern County contracted a fungal infection known as Valley fever. Cases of the disease have tripled in California over the last decade, and more than 5,300 cases have been reported this year through June - 63% higher than last year. Dr. George Thompson, co-director of the Center for Valley Fever at UC Davis Health joins Insight to discuss the risks associated with this infection, and the role climate change plays in spreading Valley fever to more areas. UC Davis Health is a financial supporter of CapRadio. ‘Fairview' Premieres at CapStage   Capital Stage is presenting the Sacramento premiere of Pulitzer Prize winning play “Fairview.” Directed by Sacramento's Anthony D'Juan, “Fairview” used the standard family dramedy for a sharp examination of race in America. Anthony, actor Kathryn Smith-McGlynn (who plays Beverly Fraiser) and Managing Director Keith Riedell talk about bringing this thought-provoking production to life. Capital Stage is a financial supporter of CapRadio.   Hot Jazz Jubilee Sacramento's long-running love affair with Jazz music continues this weekend with the Hot Jazz Jubilee. Patti Jones is the festival's director and she joins Insight to talk about the history of the jubilee and why Sacramento audiences can't seem to get enough. We'll also learn more about its dedication to teaching young musicians. Vicki Gonzalez Update For the past several months, Insight host Vicki Gonzalez has been updating listeners on her ongoing treatment after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Vicki rejoins Insight with the latest step in her journey, what the next several months of treatment and recovery will look like, and how she hopes to continue being a presence on CapRadio during this time.

Deanna Knight is a singer, songwriter and fronts The Hot Club Of Mars. We chat about her evolution from her roots in choir and musical theatre through Grateful Dead influenced jam band the Fat Cats into Django styled hot jazz. We talk about her experience doing singing telegrams & the serendipitous events that moved her life from her native Ontario to running a B & B on BC’s Sunshine Coast.“If you have gifts as a young person, it’s important to listen to that. And as hard as it is to be in an industry where you’re a product. It’s not like a painter right? Oh I’m gonna paint something and it’s gonna go away to somebody’s house. I’m gonna be something for people. And I’m gonna get onstage and I’m gonna be that over and over for them. And I’ve really struggled with that. Now I’ve come to a place where I feel safe. I feel safe and I feel settled.”--- SUPPORT THIS PODCAST: https://bit.ly/aswKO-FI---DEANNA KNIGHT WEB: http://deannaknight.ca FB: https://www.facebook.com/deannajknight B&B: https://www.secretbeachbandb.com Blessed To Witness: https://youtu.be/NFJF7vHMowg--- AND SOMETIMES ... Why is the ending of this film incomprehensible? Speaking of convention … what is the deal? No fangs? Is anyone else a vampire? How many fans do you think Tony Scott owned at this time? Can we make publishing scholarly essays a hot quality like it apparently is in this smoky-sexy fictional world? Are those . . . sexy teeth? Is *she* the best, or is she the worst? Is there a DAMN thing wrong with Angela Bassett's arms? And of course, IS Grady nasty? The Hunger (1983)– Written and directed by Tony Scott. These performances of Charlie Christian are found on Vinyl LP Record compilations of his recordings between 1939 and 1941. Often you will hear remarks from today's jazz, pop, blues, even rock guitarists ….like Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton ….that their BIGGEST INFLUENCES came from two or three early guitarists --- DJANGO REINHARDT, LONNIE JOHNSON and CHARLIE CHRISTIAN. You will hear this many times. The former, DJANGO REINHARDT, the BELGIAN jazz guitarist, is well known for his EUROPEAN style of jazz, the so-called "HOT JAZZ" or "GYPSY JAZZ" or "ROMANI" style of music, that has become a living musical tradition within FRENCH GYPSY CULTURE. DJANGO's "GYPSY JAZZ" style is widely emulated by today's jazz guitarists. DJANGO lived 43 years, between 1910 and 1953, and some of his most popular ORIGINAL compositions, such as MINOR SWING, DAPHNE, BELLEVILLE, DJANGOLOGY, SWING 42 and NUAGES…are jazz standards today. DJANGO REINHARDT is widely recorded, with SIX recordings during his lifetime, and a total of 23 recordings all together, many of which are compilations of his works. So DJANGO as a cultural influence, is a fascinating subject in and of itself, and will be the subject of an upcoming VINYL VIBRATIONS podcast! LONNIE JOHNSON, ANOTHER Jazz and blues guitarist, is credited with PIONEERING the ROLE of jazz guitar …..and for being perhaps the FIRST recorded case of playing single-note guitar solos. He had an extensive discography and lived to be 71, so Lonnie Johnson is well recognized, having being extensively recorded AND after having a long-standing career, performing as late as 1966, or at age 67 years. But WHAT ABOUT THIS THIRD INFLUENTIAL GUITARIST …the AMERICAN guitarist CHARLIE CHRISTIAN…NAMED SO OFTEN…..OF WHOM WE KNOW SO LITTLE ??? CHARLIE CHRISTIAN. Who is that??? What are his songs? What was his guitar style? How can CHRISTIAN be cited so often as a strong influence, when there are relatively few recordings to play? IS CHARLIE CHRISTIAN LOST IN JAZZ MUSIC HISTORY? I am going to bring to light some of this lesser known work of Charlie Christian, and feature some of the first recorded examples of his jazz guitar. More importantly, jazz guitar where the instrument is amplified and the guitarist is playing a lead role. This is truly unusual, in retrospective. Today,
