As teachers we are continually searching for great books to use in our teaching with students, to support them in their reading and writing:We need help in finding books to use as Mentor texts, to help explicitly model how others writeWe want to engage different age groups in the sheer love of reading, whilst also connecting to the curriculumDistinguished author Mike Dumbleton to discuss:His latest booksWhere did ideas come from? What was the need? What are some ways they can support writers in our classrooms? How can they be used in classrooms, how have they supported teaching & students? What are some good connecting tools and resources to use?And much moreMike Dumbleton is a writer and Literacy Consultant. He has worked in South Australian High Schools, New York City schools and as a Literacy Curriculum Officer for the South Australian Education Department. In addition to children's books, he has written a range of educational texts.Version 2Part of his interest in writing stems from the fact that his grandfather was a local poet in an Oxfordshire village in England, who regularly recited his poems to the family, with or without requests!Mike came to Australia with his wife Linda in 1972. He was always interested in writing but a young family and many sporting activities kept him fully occupied until he decided he wasn't getting any better at basketball and his three children were old enough to allow him some uninterrupted time. He then began writing picture books at the same time as devising educational texts for teachers.Enjoy, and let us know thoughts and feedback in our Facebook Group. In this episode, we (Mark Raffler and Sarah Shoemaker) chat with Jenelle Williams and Dr. Darin Stockdill about the Essential Literacy Practices for Disciplinary Literacy Instruction: Grades 6-12. We've spent a great deal of time over the past five years facilitating learning around the Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy: Grades K-3. We now have essential practices for ages birth through twelfth grade, so we decided to take this opportunity to highlight another piece of this literacy tool. A little bit about our guests today: Jenelle Williams is a Literacy Consultant within the Leadership and Continuous Improvement unit at Oakland Schools ISD in Oakland County, Michigan. Dr. Darin Stockdill is the Instructional and Program Design Coordinator for the Center for Education Design, Evaluation, and Research at the University of Michigan. Here is a quick unpacking of our conversation: Darin introduces the Essential Practices for Disciplinary Literacy Instruction in the Secondary Classroom: Grades 6-12 by telling us a bit about the document, its history, and the work that has been done to share the Essentials with educators around the state of Michigan. Mark and Darin discuss the differences between the terms “Disciplinary Literacy” and “Content Literacy.” We learn from Darin about the important starting points when first familiarizing oneself with the Disciplinary Literacy Essentials. “When engaging with the document, please read the Purpose Statement… This is about teacher learning... You have to have a systematic approach to supporting teachers in this process… We want teachers to recognize what they already do.” Jenelle talks about resources to support educators as we work to implement the Essential Instructional Practices at the secondary level. We hear from both Darin and Jenelle about potential surprises or barriers that teachers might encounter in implementing the Disciplinary Literacy Essentials. We wrap up this episode by reminding listeners that your voice matters! Please visit bit.ly/LLCNtopics to tell us what you want to future podcasts to focus on in relation to literacy. This week's episode was necessary and special! If you are a Black woman in education, this episode is for you! For this conversation, I welcomed my good friend and thriving edupreneur Deidra Fogarty to the podcast to talk about her personal journey in education, the founding of Black Girls Teach, the need for school districts to create safe community spaces for Black women educators, and much more! To learn more about Deidra's work, you can visit the Black Girls Teach website at blackgirlsteach.com or follow @blackgirlsteach on all social media platforms. BIO: Deidra Fogarty is a native of Bridgeport, Connecticut and is currently an Educator, Literacy Consultant and Entrepreneur. Deidra has worked in education for over a decade in various capacities. Her natural leadership ability allowed her to venture into leadership positions in Washington Metropolitan area. After a decade working in education and frustration with the current state of it, Deidra decided to make a pivot in her career entering back into the classroom as a teacher. Deidra used this as an opportunity to develop her teacher craft by working with students who needed the most academic support. With her new setting and role, came a happier mindset, thus allowing her to use her time to focus on her other passions such as diverse children's literature, supporting teachers, providing resources literacy to parents and bringing awareness to current issues in Urban Education. She, along with her sister, launched a successful subscription service called WAM! Book Bundle where she provides a selection of diverse children's books to parents and educators each month. Through all of her ventures, Deidra realized that there was a void in Urban Education. Along her journey, there was never a support system, community or outlet for Black women in Education, besides her own educator friends. She knew that women like herself often felt isolated and frustrated with not being able to share their thoughts about Education and their role in it, unapologetically. She wanted to create a community where other Black women working in Education could discuss topics, get advice, share best practices and connect with one another. She wanted to create a way for more people to see and hear the perspective of Black women working in Education. Black Girls Teach was the solution. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/identitytalk4educators/support

Author Samuel Jaye Tanner joins us to talk about his article, "Whiteness is a White Problem: Whiteness in English Education." Our guests discuss how white people in an American context have problems with race that are distinct from the racism people of color experience, and how white English educators can rethink their roles in dismantling white supremacy. This discussion launches the second iteration of LEARN, a Marginal Syllabus co-developed with the National Writing Project (NWP) and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). During each month, from November to June during the 2019-20 academic year, we will collaboratively read and discuss an article, published in four different NCTE journals, that investigates the intersection of literacy and equity. Refer to the 2019-20 syllabus for information on all the annotatable readings; these will go “live” on the first Monday of each month, along with related events hosted by the National Writing Project. Guests Sam Tanner, Assistant Professor, PennState Andrea Zellner, Literacy Consultant, Oakland Schools (MI) Christina Cantrill, Associate Director of National Programs, National Writing Project Joe Dillon, Co-Founder, Marginal Syllabus; Teacher, Rangeview High School in Aurora Public Schools in Colorado; Denver Writing Project Teacher-Consultant Remi Kalir, Co-Founder, Marginal Syllabus; Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Denver School of Education and Human Development Related Links "Whiteness is a White Problem: Whiteness in English Education" 2019-20 Marginal Syllabus
In this episode, Claire interviews Karl Duke at the One Education Literacy Conference. Growing up in Barnsley in a working-class family, a wealth of books were not readily available to Karl as a child but he credits his parents for always encouraging him to read. After initially training as an illustrator in the early 90s, Karl has worked in primary education for almost 20 years. In his first position at a rural school in Lincolnshire, he became the Literacy lead then successfully applied for a Literacy Consultant post which he worked in for six years. In this role, Karl delivered national strategy courses in the region including Talk for Writing. He developed materials for visual literacy incorporating film and picture books before returning to school life as an Assistant Head on the Lincolnshire coast. He has now been the Headteacher at Blyton cum Laughton Church of England Primary School for three years. Since being appointed, he and his team have developed a reading-inspired curriculum which he and Claire discuss in detail. KEY TAKEAWAYS · Picture Books Karl makes extensive use of picture books in his school. His belief is that quality visual texts stimulate learning across the curriculum. The reading inspired curriculum that his school are developing ensures that children from all backgrounds have access to quality texts. Picture books are fantastic for reading for pleasure across all key stages and the aim at Karl’s school is to get the children to fall in love with each story. They aspire to ensure that every child by the end of Year 6 leaves their school with a love or continued love of reading. · Sharing the Love Due to the reputation Blyton cum Laughton have developed as a school who love books, they have had over 1,000 books donated to them in just a few months. This has been brilliant for the school particularly when faced with the issue of funding and is something for all schools to consider. · Ofsted and Curriculum Scrutiny Karl believes that placing reading at the core of the curriculum can only be a positive thing. The importance of books is very apparent at his school and their influence can be seen throughout so he feels they are taking the right path to ensure it is the right curriculum for them. The teachers, parents and children are all on board which keeps them moving in the right direction. · Detail Detectives Karl has come across many children who struggle to find enough to write about and who find it difficult to write in detail. The idea of ‘Detail Detectives’ is to use illustrations from picture books to get children to focus in and look at the details of different parts of a bigger image. He describes the idea of seeing the image as a jigsaw, breaking it into 12 pieces and giving the children 1 piece to study helping them to focus on the details. Children can find it daunting to deal with all of the information in one go. By looking at one piece at a time, they are able to collate a larger number of ideas together instead of trying to process it as a whole. Karl gives copies of images useful for this activity on Twitter and his blog. You can find links to both in the show notes. · CPD Twitter is an excellent source of free CPD and offers a huge wealth of teaching ideas. Karl discusses how most of his inspiration comes online these days. He heartily recommends becoming a regular visitor of book shops to find good quality picture books, especially independent ones where quirky, less well-known texts can be picked up. · Recommendations Karl recommends the author Aaron Becker, particularly his ‘The Journey’ trilogy for imaginative story telling. He also mentions ‘The Arrival’ by Sean Tan for discussing issues around migration and a family starting a new life. BEST MOMENTS “It’s important to us that we can incorporate texts that our relevant to our children.” “As a Headteacher, it is a difficult position to be in. You want the school to move forward quickly for the benefit of all the children within it and there are times where you have to make decisions that are difficult. They might be difficult for the staff but we’re creating a culture of trust and freedom so that teachers have freedom to do their job successfully without the need to monitor, monitor, monitor to death.” “There are children that will always struggle with reading and perhaps not enjoy it but there are things that I don’t like doing and I never will like doing so it’s not about forcing it. It’s from head of leadership down, ensuring that we show reading as a pleasurable experience and if we do that there is more chance of children also picking up on that.” “I have a library in my office where the children can come and select books. We have a few children who do that now. I’d love them all to come and look and choose a book, but it’s going to take time to build that culture. It’s not something that just happens overnight.” “There are many teachers out there who really influence me. I’m a Headteacher and there shouldn’t be any differentiation within that. We’re here for the same reason.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Karl Duke Twitter: https://twitter.com/KarlDuke8 Karl Duke Blog: https://mrdht.wordpress.com/author/mrdht/ The Teachers’ Podcast: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheTeachersPodcast/ Classroom Secrets Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ClassroomSecretsLimited/ Classroom Secrets website: https://classroomsecrets.co.uk/ LIFE/work balance campaign: https://classroomsecrets.co.uk/lifeworkbalance-and-wellbeing-in-education-campaign-2019/ ABOUT THE HOST Claire Riley Claire, alongside her husband Ed, is one of the directors of Classroom Secrets, a company she founded in 2013 and which provides outstanding differentiated resources for teachers, schools, parents and tutors worldwide.
