Sam is one of the first musicians in the world to have a Conservatoire Level Masters Course specially created for him, a ‘Piano Masters in Interpretation and Improvisation' at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, bringing together his skills in jazz, composition and classical. Graduating with Distinction in 2019, he spent the following year as a Fellow with the Composition Department. He mainly studied the classical piano tradition and only recently in his career discovered his true passion: improvisation. During lockdown Sam composed a musical, One Shoe of Each Colour, all about his journey as a transgender person. Championed by GSMD as a musical having ‘all the ingredients to be the next hit' the piece is garnering much interest from the world of Musical Theatre and is due to be released in 2023. He also wrote the music for the new play Consecuencias de la Sed premiered in 2021, and was awarded the Oh! prize to the best new soundtrack. Sam is the resident pianist for DEBUT at Shoreditch Treehouse in London (No. 1 Airbnb Music Experience Globally in 2018 – Forbes) where he was featured by Steinway & Sons, and he was also part of Yamaha's ‘Live From Home' Europe wide Live Stream series. https://www.sampianistimproviser.com/

Oobah Butler is a British journalist, author, comedian, TV host and filmmaker, perhaps mostly known for his elaborate prank videos for VICE. Many of us have laughed at the absurdity of hyping a non-existent restaurant into the London No 1 on Tripadvisor; creating a fashion brand from market stall garments and displaying it on Paris Fashion Week; or sending another (better?) version of yourself to your highschool reunion. Oobah did all of these things and documented it, and when he received media attention he sent alternative versions of himself to the interviews. That's why his book is aptly titled How to bullsh*t your way to Number 1. We met him before a talk during Sime Leader Sessions at Epicenter in Stockholm, to discuss what is funny - and what exactly he is revealing about our human nature. Jesse believes we will all know who Tom Cridland is in the very near future.

dropping into Links of London in a Canadian Mall this month I was struck by how the brand had not changed from when I worked with the management team 15 years ago. So a ponder about brand consistency and invention.
Tobin records this episode from his hotel room in Dallas, fresh off Errol Spence's shutout unanimous decision over Mikey Garcia. Can Spence handle the mantel 'face of boxing'? He called out Manny Pacquiao. Can Manny win that fight or is it too much for the future hall of famer? Miami was made proud on Saturday by Jorge Masvidal. Gamebred knocked out Darren Till at 3:05 of the second round. He called for a title shot after the win. Sign us up! Leon Edwards got a three piece and a soda after chirping at Masvidal backstage. Will there be punishment for this scuffle? Did Ben Askren make a huge misstep in ignoring Masvidal in his entire trip to London? No heat on a match up with Masvidal, not getting a title shot, Till can't lead to a belt for him anymore, shouldn't Ben fight Robbie Lawler again to settle the controversy with no real marketable option? Conor McGregor was arrested in Miami because of course he was and weird circumstances around the main event getting scratched at Titan FC.

So tune anyway…ok…we have the final 2 teams left for the Super Bowl and guess who is back again??? Yeah that Brady guy! The Patriots are back in the Super Bowl again and this time playing the LA Rams. We recap the conference championship games and the piss poor officiating in both games. Without any football this weekend…and no the Pro Bowl doesn’t count as real football…Let’s Get Ready to RUMBLE! Wherein we encounter a ‘phosphorescent charmer’ in fin de siècle Melbourne . Herald (Melbourne), 8 August 1892, p. 2, col. 8 See it on the page, here. Did you know that The day the ghost walks is slang for pay-day? Originally theatrical slang, it supposedly originated among the cast of an early production of Hamlet. Much later, it would come into more general use, though mainly in the US. And speaking of the theatre, Melbourne's suburban ghost went on to share a bill with a lady contortionist in a ‘screamingly funny farce’ – Argus (Melbourne), 5 August 1895, p. 8, col. 7 Like to know more about the legend of Spring-heeled Jack, the (not-quite) original suburban ghost? For a brief run-down, take a look at the Atlas Obscura entry – chances are you'll find plenty more at Atlas Obscura to snag your interest. Or for the (obsessively) full story (on an orange background, no less), immerse yourself in The Complete Spring Heeled Jack Page – just don't say I didn't warn you. Spring-Heeled Jack, The Terror of London No. 1. From the San Francisco Academy of Comic Art, the Ohio State University Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum. This 'penny dreadful' series ran to at least 36 issues. See more of the covers here. Cover of Spring-Heeled Jack, a 1991 graphic novel for kids by Phillip Pullman, who would go on to write the acclaimed ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy for young adults. And speaking of daemons... Universal Spectator (London), 7 October 1732 This is the earliest mention I’ve been able to find of ‘suburban ghosts’. The suggestion here seems to be that such ghosts are ‘raised’ (i.e., invented) by ‘petty Printers and Pamphleteers’ in order to sell more papers – a suggestion echoed in a regional Australian newspaper 173 years later: Dubbo Liberal & Macquarie Advocate (NSW), 10 June 1905, p. 6, col. 4

No Blank Screens, London
Who better to talk about national character in comics with than S.J. Harris, author of the extremely English Eustace, one of our favourite books of last year? And where better to record that than Rules, ludicrous cocktail bar and oldest restaurant in London? No one and nowhere, that's who/what. There's a fair bit of noise in this one - it was recorded in a bar, there was another bar outside, a hen party within, a perpetually-circling police helicopter overhead (Roger recently threatened the king of Spain in an elaborate and unsavoury fashion), and to be brutally honest we were just eating bar snacks the whole time with no regard for decorum or your delicate ears. We can only apologise.
And by doing that, he just came out. At Chili's. Along Morato. In Quezon City. No red carpet and parade music? Cara, Miles and Bon eat Chili's Crispy Calamari Putanesca Pasta and New Zealand Mussels. Miles complains about the bill and that his mussels are "freshish" at best, but is distracted by Bon's challenge to name pastries. Contenders are "Rainbow Pie", "Chocolate Tea Somethings", "Crinkles Crinkles Shining", "Sunshine Smile Cake", and "Happy Happy Shiny Faces". Cara makes fun of Philippine education, while Bon believes English literacy in the country is 99%. Wow. That's just crazy! Which part of the Philippines did he study in? London? No featured music this time because this is the longest podcast we've ever come up with. We cut and edited this episode like John Wayne Gacy, but Bon and his headache went overtime. We love him when he has a headache because he is five notches funnier than his already funny self, and he tends to come out.
