Alan descobriu a música bem cedo.
This week, we celebrate the beginning of the '90s (Or was it the end of the '80s? You be the judge.) When MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice and Wilson Phillips ruled the airwaves. When Uncle Gregg found some direction and joined the Navy. When teenage Brett co-founded his first band, Empty Glass. And when our special guest, power pop legend Jamie Hoover was caught in a flurry of activity, releasing his debut solo album Coupons, Questions And Comments and prepping for The Spongetones' 1991 third full length, Oh Yeah! Formed in 1979 and very much influenced by the British Invasion, Charlotte, North Carolina's The Spongetones carried on the musical genre through acclaimed original songwriting, jangle pop riffs, and lilting, Beatlesque vocals. In his 2007 authoritative book Shake Some Action, John M. Borack rated The Spongetones' Beat And Torn (a CD containing 1982's Beat Music LP - one of Brett's all time favorites - and 1984's Torn Apart mini-LP) at #24 of his Top 200 Power Pop Albums of all time. The band features the triple threat of talented singers and songwriters: Jamie Hoover, Pat Walters and Steve Stoeckel. In addition to The Spongetones, Jamie has shared the stage and recorded with Don Dixon and Marti Jones, The Smithereens, Graham Parker, Hootie & The Blowfish, Bill Lloyd, Emitt Rhodes, and Ray Paul, among others. Hoover either produced or co-produced all the Spongetones' albums, and continues to produce a wide variety of other musicians, recently including '60s singer/songwriter Bob Lind ('Elusive Butterfly') and young prodigy Elena Rogers. Jay and Penny Lover discuss what's been yanking their sonic cranks as of late. Repeat guest Don throws in his two cents as well. We don't understand it. Oh, what's come over us? But we're not gonna worry. No. Not anymore. Because when men are in love, we've only got one story. That's why our love is lost somewhere in your kiss.
The duo of Toronto-based Brent Randall and Los Angeles-dwelling Johnny Toomey are known for their previous achievements with Los Angeles based, baroque-pop group, The Electric Looking Glass. Both musicians compliment each other stylistically and add sparks to their newest project, Vanity Mirror. Their debut LP, PUFF was written, recorded, performed, produced and even mixed by Brent Randall. The resulting album starts where their other project Electric Looking Glass leaves off, with hummable, dreamy pop that branches out into more intimate, less genre specific freeform songcraft. It is a nostalgic collection of songs pieced together in makeshift spaces while traveling between LA, Montreal, Detroit and Toronto. Taping old pianos in public libraries and abandoned houses and tracking vocals in vintage shop basements, Randall sent the tracks to Toomey who recorded drums and percussion in his Los Angeles basement using a handheld field recorder. Listeners will call to mind artists like Emitt Rhodes, Olivia Tremor Control, The Kinks and Belle and Sebastian. Vanity Mirror's PUFF will see a digital/vinyl release on May 12th, 2023 via We Are Busy Bodies. This week I'm joined by Ambrose Kenny-Smith of The Warlocs and King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard to talk about his spark Emitt Rhodes' self-titled second albumAlthough it never got the recognition it deserved, this album was an enormous influence for artists like Aimee Mann and Mac DeMarco. Rhodes wrote the album, played every instrument and produced it; all from his parents' garage. The album's backstory is incredible and so is Ambrose's relationship to it. My guest today is Pierre de Reeder who spreads his time between making records as a commercial studio owner at 64 Sound and its affiliated production room facilities, inhabiting the occasional role as a solo artist or player in various projects, running his indie record label Little Record Company, and managing all things Rilo Kiley… a band for which he is both a founding member, as well as now having its two latest releases on his label. In recording things, he has worked with the likes of Mavis Staples, She & Him, M. Ward, Sia, Tim Heidecker (from Tim & Eric), Emitt Rhodes, Vampire Weekend, Ben Gibbard, Julian Casablancas, Bright Eyes, and much of his own and various bands. And his studio, 64 Sound and its incarnations have hosted artists such as X, Devendra Banhart, My Morning Jacket, Amanda Palmer, Michael Kiwanuka, Tokyo Police Club, Bat For Lashes, Ty Segall, St. Vincent and Sleater-Kinney, Starcrawler, Warpaint, and many more. Because of its very extensive collection of vintage recording gear, microphones and instruments (lifelong collections of Pierre and his studio partners Curt Anderson and Kingsize Soundlabs), as well as multiple analog tape formats and/or digital, 64 Sound, has become a highly coveted recording destination for bands and songwriters from around the country and globe who come to play and write on more than 50 vintage guitars, 40 vintage keyboards, synths and organs, multiple pianos and drums and effects and doodads galore. The latest chapter of ‘Off the Record' opens with David Bowie's first trip to the United States in January of 1971. The arrival was a triumph for David — until he was detained by customs officials for his feminine clothes. He received a warmer welcome Ron Oberman, his press agent set to greet him by his label, Mercury Records. Ron was joined by his entire family — his mom, his dad, and his younger brother, music journalist Michael Oberman. The Oberman's welcomed the young, unknown singer into their family, sharing their suburban home and taking him out for a meal at a local steakhouse. David's first night in the States has gone down in Bowie legend as an important early step in his journey to global superstardom. The trip is the plot of a new film, Stardust, a movie that has been deemed controversial for its liberal reinterpretation of historical events. Ron Oberman, an instrumental force in Bowie's early career, died in 2019. But his brother Michael recounted the famous visit in his new book, Fast Forward, Play and Rewind. A memoir of sorts, the book also collects Michael's interviews with over a hundred rock legends ranging from Janis Joplin and James Brown to the Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Leon Russell, Emitt Rhodes, Little Feat — and of course David. Jordan spoke with Michael about his remarkable career as a music journalist, and that special night with David Bowie in his parents living room back in 1971. Episode 007: Seven & Seven Is: Sounds from Los Angeles01 Love - 7 & 7 Is (1966 - 45 Mono Mix) This proto-punk stunner is still years ahead of its time and set the bar for what could be done within the confines of a 2 minute single. Led by the enigmatic Arthur Lee, Love is responsible for some of the greatest music to come from the city. 02 The Byrds - Why (1966 - 45 Mono Mix) The kings of Los Angeles jangle took off for headier sounds with their single “Eight Miles High” of which this is the b-side. This take differs from the album version and packs a more immediate punch, capturing the Coltrane-esque solo they were going for better than the flip. 03 Lee Mallory - That's the Way (1966 - 45 Mono Mix) This harmony pop rocker is the first collaboration between producer Curt Boettcher and singer Lee Mallory, laying the groundwork for legendary pop psych band The Millennium. Their unmistakable harmonies are already in place and the bridge provides the perfect pallet for Curt's sonic experiments. 04 West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band - If You Want This Love (1967) Brothers Dan and Shaun Harris recruited pal Michael Loyd to form a band that was then co-opted by scenester Bob Markley. This fuzzy folk rocker is taken from their first album which, like most of their catalog, is a mix of earnest pop-sike by the brothers and strange ramblings from Markley. 05 Kim Fowley - Bubblegum (1968) Speaking of scenester, Kim Fowley may be the reason the word exists. A constant on the scene, he involved himself with many a band from the city in some form or fashion. His solo efforts are patchy affairs, but this early hard rock number featuring Mars Bonfire of Steppenwolf finds him finding his muse. 06 The Standells - Did You Ever Have The Feeling (1967 - Mono Mix) Unlike may of their contemporaries, the Standells are one of the few bands that were unaffected by trends. The slight eastern overtones in this song are the closest the band would come to experimenting with psychedelia, as they called it a day before the flower power bandwagon appeared. 07 The Hook - Son of Fantasy (1968) After his time in the Leaves, Bobby Arlin teamed up with Buddy Sklar to form the more hard rock inclined The Hook. They produced two albums for Uni before calling it quits, of which this dark riff heavy tune graces their first. 08 The Peanut Butter Conspiracy - Dark On You Now (1967 - Mono Mix) Classic jangly folk-rock from this band formed from the demise of The Ashes. The band called it a day after two albums for Columbia and one for local label Challenge. 09 Spirit - Uncle Jack (1967 - 45 Mono Mix) Sounding like a long lost UK psych 45, this early single by these LA legends is uncharacteristic of their usual sound, which combined moody and introspective songs with guitarist Randy California's epic fretwork.10 The Monkees - For Pete's Sake (1967 - Mono Mix) Although often maligned for being a "fake band", the Monkees eventually came into their own. This song is the first written by Peter Tork and features Mickey Dolenz on vocals.11 The Merry Go Round - Time Will Show the Wiser (1967 - Mono Mix) Led by Emitt Rhodes, this South Bay band recorded one magnificent album before Rhodes embarked on a solo career.12 The Electric Prunes - Wind Up Dolls (1967 - Mono Mix) This SFV based band found early success and recorded two albums for Reprise in 1967 before splitting up. Their following two releases were produced by David Axelrod and feature none of the original band members13 Buffalo Springfield - Everydays (1967 - Mono Mix) Recorded live at Gold Star studios, this stunning number shows both Stephen Stills strength as a song writer as well as Neil Young's fearless guitar experiments.

DISCO 1 CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL Who’ll Stop The Rain (HOUSE - 3) Cosmos Factory DISCO 2 THE VELVET UNDERGROUND Sweet Jane (2) Loaded DISCO 3 THE GUESS WHO American Woman (VOLVIENDO A LOS 70 - Cd1 -7) American Woman DISCO 4 CHICAGO Make Me Smile (Cd 2 - 18) Chicago DISCO 5 RODRÍGUEZ Sugar Man (1) Cold Fact DISCO 6 DR JOHN & The Night Tripper What Comes Around (Goes Around) (2) Remedies DISCO 7 THE BAND The Shape I’m In (Cd 1 - 16) Stage Fright DISCO 8 BOB DYLAN If Not For You (10) New Morning DISCO 9 GRATEFUL DEAD Casey Jones (8) Workingman’s Dead DISCO 10 DAVE MASON & CASS ELLIOT Someting To Make You Happy (7) DISCO 11 THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS Lazy Days (12) Burrito Deluxe DISCO 12 CARPENTERS They Long To Be (Close To You) (12) Close To You DISCO 13 BREAD Make It With You (4) On The Waters DISCO 11 JAMES GANG Funk #49 (JOE WALSH CD 1 - 6) James Gang Rides Again DISCO 12 LAURA NYRO When I was a freeport…(GARDOT - 6) CHRISTMAS AND THE BEADS OF SWEAT DISCO 13 DEREK & THE DOMINOS Layla(13) Layla and other assorted love songs EMITT RHODES With My Face On the Floor (CD 1 -16) Emitt Rhodes Escuchar audio
In the first part of this program we listen to the new pop/rock sound as influenced by psychedelia from straight forward rock to something more eccentric.. On the second part of the show we hear the more pastoral English Folk influence that emerged with the new psychedelic music form.Listen to previous shows onhttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1329053I'm listed in Feedspot's "Top 10 Psychedelic Podcasts You Must Follow". https://blog.feedspot.com/psychedelic_podcasts/You may also enjoy Becky Ebenkamp's "Bubblegum & Other Delights" show. BURP Host Pete Strobl interviews drummer, engineer and producer Nick Bertling of Bertling Noise Laboratories. Nick Bertling established himself as a drummer for hire in the Baltimore area in the late 90's, and worked in tons of cover and original bands until leaving the area 5 years ago. He's also been working as a solo artist since 2012 as the sole member of "bertling noise laboratories" acting as the writer, musician, singer and engineer. He's also branched out into remote drum recording and mixing services since relocating to Indiana in 2019. His sound is likened to the sloppy 60's combined with cocaine-fueled 1980's with slick production values, influenced by Todd Rundgren, Paul McCartney, Frank Zappa, Emitt Rhodes, Kevin Gilbert, and 10CC.
Emitt Rhodes had an extraordinary gift as a songwriter, a fantastic voice and was a remarkable musician-- he was one of the first artists to record by himself, playing every instrument on his albums. He passed away in July 2020, leaving behind a small but significant collection of albums. In tribute to this under-appreciated talent, I've selected a song from his most successful band, The Merry-Go-Round, a song that itself is a celebration of great music & great bands. Psychedelic '60's pop never got better than this."Listen Listen!" Ah, qué buenos tiempos, ¡los sesenta!⦁ George Harrison, When We Was Fab⦁ The Raspberries, I Wanna Be With You ⦁ The Hollies, Carry Anne. ⦁ The Zombies, She's Not There ⦁ The Monkees, I'm A Believer. ⦁ The Idle Race, End Of The Road⦁ Electric Light Orchestra, Mr. Blue Sky ⦁ The Bee Gees, In My Own Time ⦁ The Redwalls, Thank You ⦁ The Spongetones, Better Take It Easy ⦁ Emitt Rhodes, The Man He Was⦁ Utopia, Say Yeah ⦁ Utopia, I Just Want to Touch You ⦁ The Hornets, Give Me a Kiss ⦁ The Knickerbockers, Lies. ⦁ Badfinger, I'll Be The One ⦁ Swinging Blue Jeans, The Hippy Hippy Shake⦁ Paul McCartney, Dear BoyTags: Pop, Pop-rock, Power Pop, Pop Bitelsco

In 1970, Emitt Rhodes recorded an album in a shed behind his parent's garage. In 1973, he vanished from the public eye and wouldn't release another album until 2016. Join me as I get under the hood and figure out more about the story behind this record. lostgemspodcast@gmail.com
Welcome to episode 104 of Love That Album podcast. I am joined once again by hard working musician and pop lover, Rhys Lett. He’d spent most of the night playing a gig and STILL found energy on a Sunday morning to talk about the music of Emitt Rhodes – that’s dedication. Since I’m a fan of great songwriters, people have expressed surprise that it took me until about a year ago or so to discover Rhodes’ music. LA based musician and producer Chris Price was discussing his involvement producing Rhodes’ 2016 comeback album “Rainbow Ends” on Ben Eisen’s All Time Top Ten podcast. Intrigued, I sought out his first solo album for ABC Dunhill, then bought Rainbow Ends when it was released. Rhys is a long-time fan of Emitt Rhodes music, so we were able to have an interesting discussion focusing on his early bands, his one-man-band albums from the early 70s, the frustrating history behind his reason to walk away from being a recording artist, and his connection to Gabe (Welcome Back Kotter) Kaplan. Most importantly, we discuss THE MUSIC (in theory, what this show is about). More specifically, we talk a little about Emitt Rhodes first (sort of) solo album and then contrast it to his comeback album of 2016, “Rainbow Ends”. Has Emitt changed his songwriting approach? How different does an album with great session musicians compare to albums recorded methodically by one man playing and singing all parts? These and other vitally life-important questions will be answered. Eric Reanimator’s Album I Love segment also focuses on a musician who started his career a long time ago. Eric Burdon’s 2013 album “ ’Til Your River Runs Dry” gets the Reanimator love. I’d like to give huge thanks to Rhys for joining me on the show with so little sleep (though you’d never know it). He’s a passionate music lover, and it was a joy to get his perspective. L.A. Music Powerhouse, Fernando Perdomo, releases “The Golden Hour”, the perfect culmination of an amazing musical journey, evoking the past and inspiring the future. FOR RELEASE July 18, 2017 LOS ANGELES, CA - One of the most accomplished musicians on the LA scene, Fernando Perdomo has created an album that echoes the sound and feel of classic 70s singer-songwriter records. Recorded at Ardent Studios with Big Star archivist and engineer Adam Hill, “The Golden Hour” has captured the atmosphere, energy and melancholy mood of the classic Big Star albums recorded within those walls. The sound of "The Golden Hour" features the instruments and gear heard on classic albums by the iconic power pop group. The main electric guitar employed on the album is a vintage Gibson ES-330 that was owned by late Big Star founding member, Chris Bell. Perdomo also was afforded access to the original Mellotron used by Big Star, which is heard on every song on the record. From the opening piano-instrumental, "Sunset" to the inspirational closer, "Gold," vast emotional ground is covered on “The Golden Hour.” Many of the songs on the record clock in at less than 3 minutes long, wielding a measured sonic economy in a world full of overcooked pop. Only 36, Perdomo is a veteran sideman having backed up a who’s who of musical talent numbering Todd Rundgren, Jakob Dylan, Fiona Apple, Beck, Emitt Rhodes, Linda Perhacs, Cristian Castro, and more. Tallying years of experience has honed his consummate ability and robust creativity on a variety of instruments. In fact, Perdomo is a virtual one-man band on “The Golden Hour” providing all the vocals and instrumentation. Lyrically, Perdomo’s exquisitely crafted songs are infused with a finely nuanced mix of honesty and vulnerability. On "I Feel (Therefore I Am)", Perdomo sings "I've made mistakes; it can be great" which is quite the admission from a musician who sounds like a true perfectionist. On "Love Loss Repeat," he intones, "Nothing lasts forever…especially love”. Perdomo wrote every song on the record independently, save for "Look At The Moon," which is a co-write between Perdomo and Jordan Zevon, son of Warren Zevon, who was inspired to write the instrumental for a bridge while watching Perdomo play his original version of the song on Facebook Live. While in Memphis, Perdomo wrote the lyrics for the bridge resulting in the final version of “Look At The Moon”, an honest love song about venturing out with the one you love on a moonlit night. Laying down the foundation of the record at Ardent Studios, Perdomo put the finishing touches on the record at his own Reseda Ranch Studios. The album was mixed and mastered by Grammy-award-winning engineer, Zach Ziskin. “The Golden Hour” features a gorgeous album cover image by Derek Cintron. Shot before the first note of the album was recorded, the evocative cover inspired the tone for the music that followed, and the visuals truly have captured the feel of the record. The Golden Hour is here…Perfect Light, Perfect Love…Enjoy!
