The landscape of Colorado's Eastern Plains is in the midst of massive change that ultimately will impact the entire state. Xcel Energy's $1.7 billion Power Pathway project will string transmission lines for nearly 600 miles across farm and ranch lands to transmit power to Front Range cities and suburbs. At the same time, energy companies are competing to create wind and solar installations to generate all that electricity. For landowners on the plains, that can mean lucrative royalties beyond their agricultural business – but it also promises windmills and solar panels that will change the landscape, quite literally. Sun energy reporter Mark Jaffe talked to the folks who have lived on the Eastern Plains for generations to produce an in-depth report on what this all means for the rural way of life. He got together with Sun colleague Kevin Simpson to chat about his story. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The two new principal dancers at the Colorado Ballet will perform the elegant but notoriously demanding “Theme and Variations” ballet at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House this month. The modern classic, which has challenged dancers for 75 years, is commonly considered the most difficult ballet to perform. The Colorado Ballet's Jennifer Grace and Mario Labrador will dance the grueling “Theme and Variations” to the last movement of Peter Tchaikovsky's (CHI-kov-ski's) Orchestral Suite Number 3. It begins with a slow opening followed by fast-paced variations and high energy finale. Colorado Sun freelancer Mark Jaffe calls it a 100-yard dash that lasts for 21 minutes. He caught up with Grace, Labrador and Colorado Ballet artistic director Gil Boggs as they prepared for Friday's opening. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What would you do if your job was to help a company navigate through difficult times? In today's episode, we have our guest Mark Jaffe from Strategic Growth Consulting, who discusses how macroeconomic trends impact consumer behaviors. He also shares his insights on what business owners might do to combat uncertainty associated with macroeconomic factors by understanding customer behavior better and shifting the mindset from cost-saving to opportunistic organization. The end of the Civil War opened a new era of fossil hunting in the American West -- and a bitter feud between two rival paleontologists, who spent 20 years sabotaging one another in a constant struggle for supremacy. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story of the Bone Wars, the greatest scientific feud of the 19th century. We'll also sympathize with Scunthorpe and puzzle over why a driver can't drive. Intro: Nepal's constitution contains instructions for drawing its flag. Parental advisory: There is a lot of kissing talk and smooching talk right up front and there's honestly no way to avoid it this week because this was a book about kissing and smooching. Claudia kisses and then smooches an annoying but handsome and swoopy-haired boy named Mark Jaffe. The boys kiss the sweet feet of sweet Pete Lerangis (metaphorically speaking). And Claudia's new friend Josh is kissed by greatness in a star turn as this week's Baller of the Week. And even if you don't like kissing or smooching all that much, stick around, because you might just learn what an answering machine is. Mark Jaffe, former Walt Disney Company senior executive, spent many years creating happy moments for millions of people. At a young age he had come to realize that his happiest life was attainable. After much studying, observing, and cultivation, he ultimately enjoyed an enduring happyness through a singular focus on identifying what worked and what didn't. Through it all he's had a life journey, perhaps similar to your own, that included career successes and failures. A marriage that succeeded until it didn't. Two fabulous kids. A dog. And the learned ability to be very happy, which, 40 years later, still keeps him happy.
