Send us a textWhat happens when a life marked by frequent transitions meets the rigid structure of military service? Meet Nick Cannon, the Director of Operations for the Wounded Veterans Relief Fund, who shares his extraordinary journey from a tumultuous childhood to becoming a crew chief for F-22s in the Air Force. Through personal stories, Nick illuminates the unpredictable paths life can take and how unexpected choices often lead to rewarding experiences. His narrative offers a unique perspective on adapting to change, an invaluable skill for both military and civilian life.Nick and I tackle the pressing issues of transitioning from military life to civilian careers, a journey fraught with challenges that many veterans face. We discuss the alarming rates of veteran suicides and the critical need for structured support systems, comparable to those available to reintegrating inmates. Our conversation underscores the importance of establishing pathways for veterans to secure meaningful employment, emphasizing that finding purpose in post-military life is crucial for their well-being.We also celebrate the impactful work of the Wounded Veterans Relief Fund, where I now serve after leaving a congressional career. Nick highlights their essential programs, like Urgent Financial Assistance and the Critical Dental Assistance Program, which have significantly improved veterans' quality of life. With over 300 participating dentists, the initiative addresses the dental health challenges veterans face due to inadequate VA coverage. Our episode concludes with a heartfelt call to support veteran-focused organizations, inviting listeners to connect with the WVRF's mission to transform lives.

While not a veteran himself, actor and director Gary Sinise is now synonymous with devotion to our active duty military, our veterans, and their families.Sinise turned 18 years old shortly after the U.S. withdrawal of forces from Vietnam. However, hearing the stories of service in Vietnam from his wife's brothers instilled a deep appreciation for those who served and a desire to help them - especially those who struggled after coming home to a hostile public and had difficulty returning to civilian life. That passion grew even more after Sinise was cast as "Lieutenant Dan" in the movie "Forrest Gump". He describes going through training for the role and connecting deeply with the arc of Lieutenant Dan's story - from a proud officer to a double amputee spiraling out of control to recovery in both his personal and professional lives.Sinise also walks us through how "Forrest Gump" led to the creation of the Lieutenart Dan Band, which played countless shows for troops at home and abroad. He tells us how his work with the band eventually led him to co-host the National Memorial Day Concert at the U.S. Capitol. And he shares how his work serving military and veteran families prompted the creation of the Gary Sinise Foundation, which is extremely active in serving our heroes in many way throughout the year.Don't miss this conversation with one of the military community's most steadfast friends.

Veterans Advocate, Scott Freyer is the Awakened Soul Story of the Week! Scott and I live in the same town, Griswold Connecticut we have both lived there for 9 years and for some reason, never officially met.  We would see each other at basketball games – and in passing at a local restaurant – but never were introduced.  I would see his posts on social media and on various town FB pages – I always admired the way he would handle himself on some pretty contentious comments made by others.  He seems to take the mediator side of things or with a comical comeback.  I also noticed that he was very involved in his children's lives, his community and has a strong advocate interest in veteran's organizations.  This is what piqued my interest in what he was really all about.  I wanted to know more about him and what drove him to help others.  We have chatted a few times about various things, local politics, helping people during the lockdown and about how we could do better to help others in the community.  So, I was very excited that he agreed to an interview for Awakened Soul Stories.  I had a great time taking to him during the interview and came away with a renewed admiration and respect for Scott and the kind of person that he is. I hope you will listen to this episode and get to know Scott like I have.  He is a very AWAKENED human as you will hear, he does a lot to help the human race elevate the vibration so that one day – we can all, just get along and understand each other on a whole other level.  Peace and prosperity will prevail with people like Scott doing their part! About Scott: Scott Freyer was born in Red Bank, NJ in August of 1970 and grew up on the Jersey Shore. After graduating high school in 1988, he enlisted in the United States Navy and joined the submarine force. During his time in the service, Scott was stationed in Charleston, SC and Groton, CT. He deployed during Operation Desert Storm, Operation Deliberate Force, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2012, Scott retired from the Navy after 24 years as a Chief Petty Officer. Scott is currently employed by the US Navy as a Mechanical Engineer at Electric Boat. In 2001, Scott met his wife Brenda on a blind date, and they were married in May of 2003. In December 2004, Brenda gave birth to their first child Dylan, who is currently an All-State soccer and lacrosse player at Cheshire Academy in Cheshire CT. In January 2007, they had their second child, Olivia. Olivia is an Honor Student at Griswold High School and is on the volleyball and lacrosse teams.  Scott and his family reside in the town of Griswold Connecticut. Scott is also the Co-founder of B3 Media with his friend Chris Nott, and they produce and co-host a weekly baseball podcast called "Bronx Baseball & Beer" and is currently the #1 baseball podcast in the state of Connecticut. Scott is also heavily involved in the military community, specifically veterans and veterans suicide prevention advocate groups. He participates in several events every year including the Norwich Irreverent Warriors Silkies Hike and Tough Ruck Boston and has raised over $5000 for these charities.  He feels, as a veteran himself that we as a country, can do a better job with making veterans feel that we care and appreciate their service.  By raising awareness and fundraising, Scott is doing his part to make sure these Veterans are taken care of. Please feel free to reach out to Scott to make a donation or find out how you can help our veterans.  Scotts Email: scottfreyer1970@gmail.com Facebook: Scott Freyer Instagram: @scottsofreyer Irreverent Warriors Website: www.irreverentwarriors.com Tough Ruck Website:  www.toughruck.org Learn more about Pam here: https://www.facebook.com/AwakenedSoulStories https://www.facebook.com/TreeOLife222/ Contact Pam: 401-533-1864 or pampatalano@gmail.com

175: Travis Mills: Former U.S Army Staff Sergeant, President of Travis Mills Group, Travis Mills Foundation, New York Times Best-Selling Author, Veterans Advocate, and Public Speaker discusses his triumphant recovery and successful life after becoming an amputee during combat.   Travis Mills    Did today’s guest Travis Mills grow up with his glass-is-half-full positive mentality? “Yeah, I’m pretty sure my parents called it stubbornness. It got me in trouble a lot. But I’ve always been the same way that I am today, going forward with life after everything that happened to me. The best compliment that I get and the most organic one that they give me is, ‘Wow Travis. You are the same person. I didn’t think you were going to come out of it the same.”    On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Travis Mills, Former U.S Army Staff Sergeant, President of Travis Mills Group, Travis Mills Foundation, New York Times Best-Selling Author, Veterans Advocate, and Public Speaker, about his unwavering desire to achieve his goals. “I was always on sports teams. So there was that camaraderie. You had to go that extra mile, and do that extra rep, and go the extra hour, and workouts, and things like that just to achieve the goal. How my motto came around, I was actually doing recovery at the hospital and the occupational therapist asked me if I wanted to take a break, and I said, ‘I am never going to stop. I’m never going to quit.’ She said, ‘That was a silly question, wasn’t it?,’ and I said, ‘Yes it was.” What You Will Learn:   What was the drive for Travis Mills to go into the military? “I realised I didn’t like school. It wasn’t for me. My dad was in the Army. My grandpa was in the Navy. A lot of my family members were in the service, and I thought, let me take a look at this. Then I got talking more and more, and I got really excited about the idea of the Army and the Airborne Infantry, and the signing bonus, and all of that. I had bills to pay. I also had to try something different. I didn’t want to live at home. No offense to my parents. I love them very much. But I want to get out and do my own thing.”  What is the whole objective when you sign up for the Airborne Infantry? “Airbourne was started in World War II. It was you can basically be anywhere in the world in 18 hours. We are supposed to be anywhere in the world and then you are supposed to be ready to jump into combat so that you can get behind enemy lines or do whatever and jump, and hit the ground running and they called it Light Infantry because you are not in tanks. You are not in vehicles. You jump in with a rucksack and your weapon and you just go into the battle.”    Travis Mills explains what happened on the day of his accident in Afghanistan. “I set my backpack down on an IED. It was about a 120-pound backpack and it set off the bomb and when it went off it took my right arm and right leg off automatically. They actually never found those pieces of me. Then the left side of my body, my left arm and my left leg were kind of there, and I don’t know. I got thrown to the ground, rolled over, and saw the aftermath of what happened. My metic and my platoon sergeant started working on me and I told them don’t worry about it. You are not going to save me. They went ahead and worked on me.”   What was going through Travis Mills’ mind after sustaining his injury? “Actually I watched a lot of war movies. I still do to this day. I love them. The only thing I saw in my head was the movie Saving Private Ryan, when the medic gets shot in the stomach and he cries out for his mom and he begs not to die, and says, ‘I don’t want to die.’ He starts yelling for his mom, you know? I’m like, my guys will never see that. I always exuded confidence. I led from the front. never showed fear. So, when I got blown up, I was just like, it is what it is. Whatever happens, happens. I realised, nothing I was going to do right in that moment was going to change the outcome of what was going to happen.”    What “The only reason I woke up in the middle of the night sweating is because I had the meat sweats from smoking meat. I ate too much. No, I don’t suffer from PTSD. People always wonder if I am lying or how can that be. I have shot people. I have killed people. I have blown people up with grenades. I have watched buddies die. I couldn’t tell you why it hasn’t affected me. It doesn’t bother me. I think the more crude sense of humor is, the first thing you feel when you shoot somebody is the recoil of your rifle, and that is just kind of how it is. I was there to do a job. I did my job, and I can separate the two. I can separate Afghanistan from my home life. I have a wife and two kids, and life goes on.”    Life After the Injury   What “Nope, I had 19 months recovery at Walter Reade, and then they discharged me and I went to work out with a personal trainer for a little bit. I need to get back in the gym if that helps. This whole COVID thing. But, no, I live a pretty normal life. I own four businesses, either solely or partnerships and then I also run a big nonprofit up here in Maine. So, life goes on. What are you going to do?”   Travis Mills Foundation During this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, Travis Mills t, “I thought the only reason I want to get better is for my wife and my daughter. So, I might as well figure out how to help people. At Walter Reade, there are so many people doing awesome things. You want to start giving back some way, some shape, some form. We started the Travis Mills Foundation and we were doing care packages, and then we decided to bring families out to Maine that had been to a physical injury, a paralyzation, amputation, spinal cord injury, something along those lines due to service, not necessarily combat, but service-related.”    Links to Additional Resources: Mark Pattison: markpattisonnfl.com Emilia’s Everest - The Lhotse Challenge: https://www.markpattisonnfl.com/philanthropy/ Travis Mills: Linkedin Instagram Twitter Travis Mills Foundation: travismills.org Mark Pattison: Instagram

Don’s decision of pursuing that political path or returning to his Kentucky roots disappeared on 9/11. That’s when his military bloodline and his sense of patriotism called him into military service. Preparations are underway at the Hilldale Cemetery in Haverhill for this December's Wreaths Across America Day, in which  remembrance wreaths are placed at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at events coordinated at more than 2,100 locations across the United States, at sea and abroad.Veterans advocate Donald Jarvis of Haverhill was a guest last week on WHAV's morning show. He's using his expertise in gravestone restoration, along with the help of volunteers, to help prepare the area.“And there's a section they call Soldiers Hill and that's where the volunteers do Wreaths Across America every December on that little hill, in that little section. It's actually a Civil War memorial. There are several Civil War graves that are circled around, with a flag pole in the middle, and I was there earlier this year and I saw that a lot of these Civil War markers—the grave stones, the monument—they kind of, over time, have sunken, gotten dirty, but they've gotten affected by the weather, by the elements,” he said.Jarvis says the Civil War markers are 36 inches long with 20 inches showing above ground, but over time they sink. In fact, one marker was only about eight inches above ground. Jarvis and volunteers carefully remove stones, clean them and place them back using a level and tape measure to make sure they're steady. It takes about two hours per stone.“Back in 2011, there was a presidential executive order that cited the best and most effective way to care for the veterans graves that are government markers, and those are the only ones I touch—the government markers. So, following those guidelines, which are the same guidelines that Arlington uses, we are working on cleaning and resetting all of the Civil War markers around there,” he noted. The on-going project is looking for people who would like to help. Those who wish to volunteer may contact Jarvis by email at Jarvis.Don@gmail.com to find out when the next restoration day takes place.Support the show (https://whav.net/become-a-whav-member/)

Guys, if you listen to just one of my podcast, please make it be this one. Today, I am joined by my friend and fellow soldier, Braxton McCoy. He and I served in Iraq together in 2005-2006. One day we were playing softball together and the next day, I hear he's been hit by a suicide bomber with multiple fractures and life-threatening injuries to himself and others. I didn't fully realize the extent of his injuries until this interview. This one is raw, it's truthful, and it's extremely insightful when it comes to one soldier's perspective of war, responsibility, obligation, and liberty. We talk about the truths and fallacies of PTSD, overcoming the demons of war, how a near-death experience changes your perspective, and the true cost of liberty. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS The true and great cost of liberty One soldier's story of surviving a suicide bomber The truths and fallacies of PTSD Overcoming the demons of war Finding new purpose in life Why heroic soldiers don't consider themselves heroes The power of writing down your thoughts and stories Living for yourself and others The after-effects of surviving a near-fatal suicide bomber The power of responsibility and obligation How near-death changes your perspective BRAXTON MCCOY As I mentioned before, I have my friend and fellow soldier, Braxton McCoy on the show today. We've lost touch over the past 10 years or so since we served together in Iraq but when I found out he had written a book about our experience and, more specifically, his experience in Iraq, I knew that this would make for a powerful conversation. After more than a decade of physical therapy and more surgeries than I care to think about, Braxton has regained most of his strength and rebounded emotionally from an extremely traumatic situation. He has twice served as National Advocate for the Army Wounded Warrior Program, and twice as Veterans’ Advocate for the Coalition of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans in the District of Columbia. His four years as an advocate were focused on getting veterans back to work, as a meaningful way to outflank Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Phil Ruddock For those of you that doubt the effects a Service Dog can have on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD),let me tell you my story.I'm a Desert Storm Veteran, what I did there is only my demons I must face.I came back with all the classic symptoms.I drank all the time,I couldn't get along with anyone,I kept checking every room in the house to make sure it was clear every time I came home,I got up and checked the locks on the doors and windows too many times to count,I was always depressed and pissed at the world, and I never slept.I drove my family so crazy that they wanted to leave.I still do some of those things, but it's getting better. After the military,I worked for the Veterans Affairs Medical Center until about six years ago when my PTSD became so bad, I had a nervous breakdown. For the next three years I basically stayed on my couch, seldom leaving my land except for a trip to town once or twice a month. This became my standard until a nice person named Brenda Wagner asked me to foster some dogs for her. There was one pit bull that was a lot like I was.She was scared, avoided people, wanted to hide under a rock, and always on guard.I worked with this dog named Mia,and we became attached. She would ride with me where ever I went.I started to feel I had someone to watch my back again. That is one of the main things that is wrong when we come back.We go from knowing we have a whole group of soldiers watching our back to coming home and being alone.Mia became my “battle buddy”,She would wake me up when I had nightmares, calm me down when I had an anxiety attack, watch my back at a counter at a store or the bank, even assure me when I had doubts.Mia was the constant in my life that PTSD took away.Everyone would leave for work or school but Mia was always there. After almost two years with Mia by my side,I can now travel some places on my own,but she still comes with me on trips out of town.
