The composer Peter Tchaikovsky knew what loneliness is.  He raised the shades on the window of his heart as he wrote in a minor key, "None but the lonely heart can feel my anguish..."  There are more people today than ever before who know the anguish of the lonely heart.  In spite of the fact that more people are alive right now than have ever died from the days of Adam and Eve to the present, there are also more lonely people than ever before.  It takes more than masses of people to eliminate loneliness.

SOURCE: Britannica.com - December 24, 2014 What is the real story of The Nutcracker? The story of The Nutcracker is loosely based on the E.T.A. Hoffmann fantasy story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, about a girl who befriends a nutcracker that comes to life on Christmas Eve and wages a battle against the evil Mouse King.

The two new principal dancers at the Colorado Ballet will perform the elegant but notoriously demanding “Theme and Variations” ballet at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House this month. The modern classic, which has challenged dancers for 75 years, is commonly considered the most difficult ballet to perform.  The Colorado Ballet's Jennifer Grace and Mario Labrador will dance the grueling “Theme and Variations” to the last movement of Peter Tchaikovsky's (CHI-kov-ski's) Orchestral Suite Number 3. It begins with a slow opening followed by fast-paced variations and high energy finale. Colorado Sun freelancer Mark Jaffe calls it a 100-yard dash that lasts for 21 minutes. He caught up with Grace, Labrador and Colorado Ballet artistic director Gil Boggs as they prepared for Friday's opening. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Peter Tchaikovsky is known mainly for his popular ballets, like The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and The Sleeping Beauty,  but he was more fond of his  serious larger works, especially his symphonies.  In this episode, we will take a look (and listen) at the first movement of his great Symphony No. 5, a work that continues to enjoy a healthy life in the standard symphonic repertoire.  Like we saw in the last episode with Gershwin's Concerto In F,  a composer of the Romantic style like Tchaikovsky is very concerned with creating tension and extending it as long as possible. We shall see what it is about Tchaikovsky's procedure that makes him so exceptional!

Musique Mécanique par le Théâtre Électrique :: "Once Upon a Dream" by Peter Tchaikovsky In 1869, King Ludwig II, the Mad King of Bavaria, began to exhibit fits of chaotic behavior in his Courtiers' presence, demanding his soldiers round up random citizens for arrest for no reason (or treason) and declaring war on random countries thinking nothing of the consequences on his subjects, or their continued inability to get a decent night's sleep lest they wake to yet another strange and unexpected act of the King's madness that would ruin their entire day before breakfast, if not their life...One morning, the Courtiers were summoned to a secret cavern in the lowest levels of the King's Royal Halls, where a small indoor lake fed the moat of water surrounding the castle walls... A large hand carved wooden swan, the size of a boat suitable for two passengers to recline in comfort on gold satin pillows, floated languidly at the end of a short dock, carpeted in a plush red shag rug and supporting a length of violet velvet ropes, ensuring the safety of any guests on this tiny pier as they boarded the bobbing White Swan... The King's most trusted personal advisor and assistant gathered the Courtiers and told them King Ludwig had ordered this Swan Boat carved to entertain foreign and Royal Guests visiting the castle in private, and that even the King's greatest seizures of madness might be abated and diffused by treating the King to an idyllic ride on his beloved Great Swan Ship, with various visiting Kings and tyrants accompanied by a live orchestral performance of one very specific movement from the ballet “Sleeping Beauty” by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky...

Synopsis “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” Well, the usual reply is, “By practicing!” But back in 1891, Peter Tchaikovsky would have probably answered, “by ship”–since he had, in fact, sailed from Europe to conduct several of his pieces at the hall’s gala opening concerts. The first concert in Carnegie Hall, or as they called it back then, “The Music Hall,” occurred on today’s date in 1891, and included a performance of Tchaikovsky’s “Coronation March,” conducted by the composer. The review in the New York Herald offered these comments: “Tchaikovsky’s March... is simple, strong and sober, but not surprisingly original. The leading theme recalls the Hallelujah chorus, and the treatment of the first part is Handelian… Of the deep passion, the complexity and poetry which mark other works of Tchaikovsky, there is no sign in this march.” Oh well, in the days that followed, Tchaikovsky would conduct other works of “complexity and poetry,” including his First Piano Concerto. Tchaikovsky kept a travel diary and recorded these impressions of New York: "It is a huge city, not beautiful, but very original. In Chicago, I’m told, they have gone even further–one of the houses there has 21 floors!" Synopsis Deadlines are a fact of life for many of us—and composer are no exception. In 1875, Peter Tchaikovsky agreed to write 12, short solo pieces, one a month, for a St. Petersburg music magazine, beginning with their January 1876 issue. Tchaikovsky dashed the first piece off, but, fearing that he might forget his monthly deadline, took the wise precaution of instructing his servant to remind him: before each month’s deadline, Tchaikovsky’s dutiful servant would say: “Peter Ilytich, isn’t it about time to send something off to St. Petersburg?” Tchaikovksy would drop whatever he was working on and finish the next installment. So, it’s not too far-fetched to imagine Tchaikovsky on this date back in 1876 putting the finishing touches to this little piano piece for the May issue of the St. Petersburg magazine, a sketch he titled “Starlight Nights.” More recently, the contemporary American composer, Judith Lang Zaimont, also composed a set of 12 short piano pieces, one for each month, a suite she titled “Calendar Collection.” An accomplish pianist and composer, Zaimont taught for many years at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. We all need a little help from friends, and one of Sergei Rachmaninoff's most supportive friends was none other than the great Russian composer Peter Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky cheered for Rachmaninoff from his box seat at concerts and paired their works together in concert. But just as Rachmaninoff started to find his footing as a composer, Tchaikovsky died unexpectedly. Tchaikovsky had come to play the role of mentor and father figure to Rachmaninoff when he was a student. The elder composer's sudden death was an immeasurable blow to the talented but insecure Rachmaninoff.

Mitzi Heath, Co-Artistic Director of the Lafayette Ballet Theatre, provides a delightful take on why she has the most wonderful job in the world.  On this episode of Discover Lafayette, Mitzi speaks about the theater and its conservatory, as well as upcoming tryouts for the 2018 annual Nutcracker Ballet performance to be held December 8-9, 2018 at the Heymann Center. Lafayette Ballet Theatre (LBT) was founded in 1982, filling the need for a classical ballet company in our community. Its official school, Dance Conservatory, was established the previous year and supplies 90 percent of the company's dancers. Lafayette Ballet Theater is run by sisters Shannon and Mitzi Heath, both of whom were professional dancers. Their mother, Patty Heath, designs and creates the costumes: with tutus running up to $5,000 each, any talented young dancer has access to the appropriate costume no matter their financial situation. Committed to their craft, the Heaths pour their hearts, souls, and talents into LBT in order to sustain opportunities for classical ballet training and performances in our area. A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, funding for LBT is generated through community financial support, grants, and tuition from the Dance Conservatory. If you've never seen a live performance of the Nutcracker Ballet, please add this to your bucket list of life's beautiful experiences. Guest artists from the Pacific Northwest Ballet and the entire dance community present this classical ballet in two acts, based on the story of E. T. A. Hoffmann's "Nutcracker and the King of Mice" with original music of Peter Tchaikovsky. More than just dance, the Nutcracker is a tradition for many families who view this as the start of the holiday season. Mitzi explained that with over 150 young dancers needed for this year's Nutcracker Ballet, they are reaching out to invite all area dancers who are at least 8 years old, have completed one full year of ballet study, and be currently enrolled in an established dance program. Auditions take place Sept. 8-9 for two performances of the full-length classical ballet, “The Nutcracker.”  Sept. 8 auditions are for advanced to professional dancers, ages 15 through adult. Sept. 9 auditions are for dancers ages 8 through 14. Auditions are scheduled to take place at Lafayette Ballet Theatre, 201 Petroleum Drive, Lafayette LA. The cost is $35 to audition, and performers selected will incur a $300 charge which covers their costumes and all related expenses for the performance. Through the support of the community, LBT has sustained its place as Acadiana's professional ballet company, offering 28-week contracted positions to local artists, and a long-term student scholarship program. LBT currently maintains an extensive complimentary ticket program, providing underprivileged children and adults, A Night at the Ballet, as well as supporting all of its educational programs that reach over 2500 children annually in schools and at the theater. LBT students have gained acceptance into the School of American Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Houston Ballet and many more. Mitzi shared that the ideal age for an aspiring ballet dancer is age 8, and training takes about 12 years for a serious student. Similar to a ball player, ballet is an athletic endeavor and not for the undisciplined!
