If you listen to comic book podcasts beyond Comic Book Couples Counseling, you've probably already encountered Aubrey Sitterson. The writer has been making the rounds, discussing his radical new science fiction series Free Planet, made in collaboration with artist Jed Dougherty, colorist Vittorio Astone, letterer Taylor Esposito, and designer Mark Kaufman. Sitterson LOVES comics, and he LOVES talking about comics. He's spent years percolating in the medium, absorbing the code of how to make the best comics in the best way possible for his particular talents. Aubrey Sitterson has developed something he calls "The Approach." It's a new method of storytelling discovered during the making of other such comics as The Worst Dudes, No One Left to Fight, and Savage Hearts. Sitterson is not just design-focused; he's design-obsessed, and it was a delight to chat with him about this intensely, carefully sharpened obsession. We're in the weeds this week. We wanted to double down on a comics-making meal, possibly inspired by the last episode's heavy process conversation with Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm about Spectrum #4. Aubrey Sitterson appears reinvigorated by Free Planet, and his enthusiasm for the craft is infectious and should encourage your leap into storytelling. Final Order Cutoff for Free Planet #1 is Monday, April 14th (That's Today!), and Image Comics will finally drop the first issue in shops on May 7th. It's not a title you want to sleep on. Everyone involved is going for it, swinging for the fences. You can view the Preview Pages here, which are overwhelming in the best way possible. Follow Aubrey Sitterson on Bluesky, Instagram, Substack, and his Website. We're sponsored by 2000 AD, the greatest comic you're not reading! Within its pages is a whole universe of characters, from Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog to Rogue Trooper, Shakara, Halo Jones, and the poor sods slogging across the Cursed Earth in The Helltrekkers. Get a print subscription at your door every week - and the first issue is free! Or subscribe digitally, get free back issues, and download DRM-free copies of each issue for just $9 a month. That's 128 pages of incredible monthly comics for less than $10. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 8, 2024 is: fissile FISS-ul adjective Fissile describes materials that are capable of undergoing fission—that is, the process in which the nucleus of a heavy atom is split apart, releasing a large amount of energy. Fissile can also be used to describe something, such as wood or crystals, capable of or prone to being split or divided in the direction of the grain along natural planes. // The wood of most conifer species is fissile, making it much easier to cut than that of sycamore and hornbeam. See the entry > Examples: "In Oak Ridge, Tennessee, a whopping 50,000 people worked to create the material, enriched uranium, needed for Los Alamos' bomb, while thousands more created another fissile material, plutonium, in Hanford, Washington. Including the hundreds of thousands of construction workers who built these labs and boomtowns, 'the Oak Ridge and Hanford sites alone hired more than a half-million employees,' the U.S. Department of Energy said." — Mark Kaufman, Mashable.com, 2 Sept. 2023 Did you know? When scientists first used fissile back in the 1600s, the notion of splitting an atom would have seemed far-fetched indeed. At that time, people thought that atoms were the smallest particles of matter that existed and therefore could not be split. Fissile (which can be traced back to the Latin verb findere, meaning "to split") was used in reference to things like rocks. When we hear about fissile materials today, the reference is usually to nuclear fission: the splitting of an atomic nucleus that releases a huge amount of energy. But there is still a place in our language for the original sense of fissile (and for the noun fissility, meaning "the quality of being fissile"). A geologist or builder, for example, might describe slate as being fissile, as it splits readily into thin slabs.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for August 18, 2022 is: immutable ih-MYOO-tuh-bul adjective Immutable means "not capable of or susceptible to change." // It is hardly an immutable fact that cats and dogs are sworn enemies; over the years our golden retriever has grown both fond and protective of her tabby housemate. See the entry > Examples: “Two swarms of curious, diverse space rocks—called Trojan asteroids—continuously journey around the sun, one in front of the gas giant Jupiter and one behind. Jupiter and the sun's gravity have combined to lock the Trojans into this immutable orbit. The asteroids can't leave. It's a major reason why Trojan meteorites likely don't land on Earth, meaning we don't have any samples of these distant, still largely mysterious objects.” — Mark Kaufman, Mashable, 28 May 2022 Did you know? Immutable may describe something that is incapable of change, but the word itself—like all words—is mutable, both capable of and prone to alteration. To put a finer point on it, if language were fixed, we wouldn't have immutable itself, which required a variety of mutations of the Latin verb mutare (“to change”) to reach our tongues (or pens, keyboards, or touchscreens—oh the many permutations of communication!). Other English words that can be traced back to mutare include mutate, transmute, and commute. Which reminds us—the mutability of language makes great food for thought during one's commute.

“The beauty is there is so much opportunity in solving the climate crisis. Let's give more people access to the climate movement and make the movement fight for everybody.” Molly is a former policy advisor for energy and climate change at the Obama White House where she helped implement President Obama's energy agenda and Climate Action Plan. Since leaving government, Molly now helps leading companies, nonprofits, activists, influencers, and communities create more effective climate communication and advocacy. An unabashed idealist - Molly's optimism is infectious. Because it's only by understanding the climate opportunity for ALL of us - especially marginalized communities - that we're going to create systemic change. Greening your life is great, but engaging people - and registering them to vote - will make a bigger difference. Molly's ultimate goal is to give everybody access to the climate movement, making the movement a fight for everybody. Updated Thursday at 8:24 a.m. CST Wisconsin health leaders sounded more alarms Wednesday about the rapidly spreading coronavirus, urging the public to take the threat seriously and for policy makers to come together and form a united front against the virus that shows no signs of abating. This comes after Gov. Tony Evers said Tuesday night that projections from the University of Washington indicate that based on current data, approximately 5,000 Wisconsinites could die from COVID-19 by January 1, if no further actions are taken to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The state's current reported death toll is 2,457. The only way to stop the coronavirus pandemic from getting even worse in Wisconsin is to “triple down,” individually and collectively, on public health measures, said Dr. Mark Kaufman, chief medical officer for the Wisconsin Hospital Association, at a virtual meeting of Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce. “We really know what works, we just need to do it and we all need to

In 1991, Mark Kaufman started as a physical therapist. 28 years later, he’s built Athletico into the dominant force in physical therapy. Based in Chicago, Athletico now has 400 Midwestern locations with 4,500 employees. And importantly, Mark had the forethought in 2011 to have a third-party start measuring outcomes… something not often done in the field. Recently, BDT Capital Partners made a significant long-term growth equity investment in the company. In this 20-minute conversation, Mark reveals how he built the industry-leading company, one foam roller at a time.
The need to do something about children being separated from their families at the border is reaching critical mass. The President has demanded that congress act and change the law so that the separations do not have to occur. In turn, there are many lawmakers that are proposing bills to handle the situation. Some are more narrow and others more comprehensive. Haley Britzky, reporter for Axios, joins us to talk about the latest bills aimed at solving the current situation. And in a surreal moment at the White House Press briefing where Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Neilson was defending the practice, a reporter played audio obtained by Pro Publica of crying children who had just been separated from their parents. We will speak to that reporter, Olivia Nuzzi, about playing the audio and reaction from the room. Finally, as the president has called for the creation of a Space Force, we will bring you another space related story.
