Today I have the pleasure of having Shannon Dalton Giordano from Serendipity Social Media, Inc. on the podcast. I met Shannon through Eileen Cox from True To Choice who I had met through Mary Cravets and her excellent Watch Us THRIVE online Zoom calls. “I'm a singer and love to sing just for fun, not professionally. So I think about Tone of Voice as how we show up. It's the words we use. It's the way we talk. It's the way we treat people. And I think that certainly from a brand perspective, often brands don't think about their tone of voice enough. I am talking about the written word. So it sounds funny since tone really makes it sound like it's going to be something audible, but yes, the words that you're using on social media, blog posts, advertising, and the ways that you talk to people. How do you want people to view you? Do you want them to see you as warm, inviting, and inclusive? Do you want to be fun? Do you want to be snarky? Do you want to be cutting edge? There are all sorts of ways you can impact your tone of voice so that people understand who you are and how you're trying to show up. It’s about storytelling. I start from, what's the thing that I'm trying to share. And then I try to think about what in my life is meaningful to me? And usually, it bubbles up to some story, whether it's about music or whether it's about a family member or training my dog or whatever it is. Do you use an anecdote to connect with people? I think it does two things. It really gets the point I'm trying to make across, but it also lets them have a little glimpse into my personality and who I am. Working with businesses, writing all of their social media posts, which I still do to some degree, but now, for the most part, I'm doing much more with strategy sessions, trying to help business owners and entrepreneurs figure out their strategy. I think a lot of people keep trying things on social media and not understanding why they don't work. I think it's much more effective to tell stories that are targeted to the pain points of the clients that you want to reach. So then they see themselves in your stories without you even having to say, buy this thing. Sometimes it can just be a really easy, a small switch. Everything you're posting is promotional. Maybe you think you're getting your message across, but it really doesn't make sense and people don't know what you do. So I've been spending a lot more time trying to get under the covers with business owners to figure out what they are doing now and how to put a strategy in place that works. It makes sense for them to read the analytics and insights and understand what's working, and what's not. After eight years of finding success as an entrepreneur, things took a turn for Mary Cravets in 2018. For the first time, her income went down. The amount wasn’t staggering, but Mary found it shocking to be so far along and still hit this hurdle. Mary shares her experience, as well as the lessons learned and lots more actionable advice during her return visit to Today’s Business Leaders. The Value of Momentum Mary was convinced she had to invest in a specific strategy to grow her business. She never had time to implement this plan, so she hired someone to help, and the end result was a complete disaster. The strategy didn’t work, and while Mary was able to recoup some of her investment, her momentum took a major hit. “There was all of this loss of momentum because I was not doing the things that did work and that had worked,” explains Mary. Trusting Your Instincts Mary now understands that the warning signs were there when she embarked on her unsuccessful endeavor, but she didn't pay attention. “When you hire someone, if you’ve got a part of you that is going, ‘this doesn’t feel quite right,’ you need to listen to that. There are a lot of experts out there, so pick one that is totally aligned,” advises Mary. Using the Right Language Mary and Gabe discuss the importance of doing things your own way but using foundational knowledge to implement a strategy. It’s important to be yourself, but in order to connect with your clients and help them, you need to communicate in a way they understand. Mary Cravets is a very impatient person, and this trait has pushed her to continually move forward and find something better. This trait has even pushed her to start her own business. Mary started out as a realtor and tried her hand at direct sales before launching her own VA business, which she eventually left to become a business advisor. In this episode of Today’s Business Leaders, Mary shares her journey and experiences and explains the one thing that can quickly kill a business. Trusting Her Instinct While running her VA business, Mary found herself continually at odds with her clients. Customers would request something, and Mary would offer advice about a better solution or strategy to achieve their objective. More often than not, the customers would essentially ignore her input, and tell her just to do what they wanted. Mary assumed that as business owners, her clients knew what they were doing, so she didn't question them further. In most instances, Mary was right and had her customers heeded her advice, they would have benefited. Building a Business on Values After finding inspiration at a conference, Mary quit her job and started working as a business advisor. The experience was terrifying, but self-affirming at the same time. A key to creating a successful business is building that business around your values, explains Mary. In her case, Mary prioritizes: Freedom to do what she wants to do both personally and professionally. Do work that makes an impact on people’s lives. Work on a variety of jobs for different clients to ward off boredom. Learning to Balance Values “The problem with just going on your values is that people sometimes stop there,” explains Mary. “There’s another piece, which that is you have to have a structure for profitability; otherwise, you’re just a bleeding heart hippie, like I used to be, and broke. It’s about being very intentional about the internal and strategic pieces. It’s a real marriage, and when you get to that point when something isn’t fitting you can either change when it’s a little uncomfortable, or you can wait until it’s burned you out and it’s burned itself to the ground,” says Mary.
