On Dec. 25, 1907, legendary jazz musician and bandleader Cabell “Cab” Calloway was born in Rochester, New York. Raised in Baltimore, Calloway left law school in the 1920s to sing with the Alabamians, launching a career that led him to Chicago's thriving jazz scene and eventually to Harlem's famed Cotton Club. During the 1930s big band era, Calloway's charismatic stage presence and distinctive scat singing style electrified audiences. He recorded iconic hits such as “Minnie the Moocher,” “Kickin' the Gong Around,” “Moon Glow,” and “The Jumpin' Jive.” Calloway continued to perform well into the late twentieth century, captivating new audiences and inspiring generations before his passing on November 18, 1994, at the age of 88. Playlist of the Show:[19:05] Adelaide Hall - Creole Love Call[25:25] Cab Calloway - Minnie the Moocher[32:04] Jimmie Lunceford - I'm Nuts about Screwy Music[36:15] Adelaide Hall - Ill Wind[45:06] Bill Robinson - Dancers Orgy

Cab Calloway was a jazz singer, dancer, bandleader and actor, who's talents won him acclaim with a career that spanned over 65 years. Cabell Calloway III had several hit records in the 1930s and 1940s, and reached the Billboard charts in five consecutive decades. Calloway also made several stage, film, and television appearances until his death in 1994 at the age of 86. Calloway was the first African-American musician to sell a million records from a single, and to have a nationally syndicated radio show. He was also the first African-American to have a network radio game show. The Cab Calloway Quizzicale aired on both the NBC Blue Network, and the Mutual Broadcasting System. He received the National Medal of Arts from the United States Congress, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Calloway's most popular song "Minnie the Moocher" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and added to the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry. We have 4 of his radio appearances, first on the Shell Chateau in 1936 with legendary entertainer Al Jolson, a 1940 concert on NBC, an appearance on the wartime program Jubilee with Nate King Cole featuring George Burns and Gracie Allen in 1944, and on the program Guest Time in 1950. The Blues Brothers Original Soundtrack is a powerhouse collection of rhythm and blues that captures the essence of the iconic film. It features a blend of classic blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll performed by legendary artists including Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, James Brown, and Cab Calloway. The Blues Brothers originated as a musical comedy act created by Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi on the sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live” in the late 1970's. Inspired by their shared love for blues and R&B music, Aykroyd and Belushi created fictional characters, Jake and Elwood Blues, as their alter egos. The act gained popularity, leading to the release of their self-titled debut album in 1978 and eventually to the creation of the Blues Brothers motion picture in 1980. In the film, parolee Jake Blues is joined by his blood brother Elwood Blues on a “mission from God” to save the Catholic orphanage in which they were raised by reuniting their band and raising the $5000.00 for the property tax bill. Their quest brings them to a number of characters played by iconic artists including Cab Calloway and James Brown. The resulting soundtrack stands as a testament to the enduring power of blues music and left an indelible mark on both the film and music industry.John Lynch dons his suit and dark sunglasses to bring us this feature. Minnie the MoocherCab Calloway originally presented Minnie the Moocher back in 1931, and reprises the song for this film. Calloway was a regular performer at the Cotton Club in Harlem, and a popular vocalist of the swing era. Calloway plays Curtis in the film, a father figure and mentor to the Blues Brothers, and performs this song as a warm-up to the concert.Jailhouse RockAs the movie ends with Jake and Elwood back in prison after successfully paying off the tax bill for the orphanage. The band plays Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock" for the inmates as the credits roll. Jake Blues (Belushi) takes lead on this upbeat number.ThinkAretha Franklin covers her own song as Mrs. Murphy, trying to persuade her husband Matt Murphy to not join the band. Franklin had a lot of difficulty lip synching the song and would have preferred to just sing it live. The Blues Brothers join her on this cover.Gimme Some Lovin'The Blues Brothers cover this piece originally performed by the Spencer Davis Group and made famous by Steve Winwood. While the song was a top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, in the film it gets a decidedly cooler reception in the honky tonk bar in which it is performed. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Lookin' for Love by Johnny Lee (from the motion picture “Urban Cowboy”)With the decline of disco, crossover country & western hits became popular. John Travolta starred in this movie which capitalized on the popularity of country music. STAFF PICKS:Train in Vain (Stand By Me) by the ClashBruce brings us the third single from the Clash's third album, “London Calling.” This was a double album, and a post-punk turn by the group. The song was originally intended to be a giveaway flexi single, but was put on the album at the last minute when that deal fell through. Mick Jones wrote and sings lead on this song, inspired by his tumultuous relationship with Stiltz guitarist Viv Albertine.Free Me Big by Roger DaltreyWayne features the front man for the Who in a solo effort written by Argent guitarist Russ Ballard. The song is on Daltrey's 1980 solo album “McVicar” It also appears on the soundtrack for the movie "McVicar" in which Daltrey plays John McVicar, an inmate in prison for a number of bank robberies. The other members of the Who play on this song as uncredited musicians. We Live for Love by Pat BenatarRob's staff pick is performed by Benatar, but it is often confused for a Blondie song. It is a single from Benatar's debut album, “In the Heat of the Night,” and was written by Neil Giraldo, Benatar's then-guitarist and now-husband (and still guitarist). It was the leading track from side two.Ride Like the Wind by Christopher CrossLynch's staff pick went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, held out of the number 1 slot by Blondie's “Call Me.” It is Cross's debut single from his Grammy winning 1979 self-titled album. Cross dedicated the song to Lowell George, formerly of the band Little Feat, who had died in 1979. Michael McDonald is easy to identify on backing vocals. NOVELTY TRACK:Turning Japanese by the VaporsSongwriter and Vapors lead singer David Fenton says this is all the cliches about angst and youth and turning into something you didn't expect to. This new wave song went to number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Our special guest is the delightful Shannon Rider, who had a vision for an original musical that we developed into a smash hit called "I Wanna Be Bad." And Shannon is in the spotlight in our Feature this week with a killer performance of "Minnie the Moocher," recorded live at Lucky Penny.

Dear Prudence | Advice on relationships, sex, work, family, and life
Prudence is joined by Krystal Farmer: twitter, podcast, and emo music enthusiast. First, my partner will no longer accompany me to my family's gathering because of the “redneck BS” he hears - what can I do? Next, my family won't turn off their Alexa device when we stay there, even though it really creeps us out - are we being unreasonable or are they? And, a group of single moms who help each other out with carpool and childcare are tired of one mom whose efforts they don't think are cutting it. Sean Gautreaux is not totally normal, but he s pretty close. An illustrator of children s books and graphic designer of well known video games, he s not a kook but he has spent a great deal of time and money trying to figure out what the UFO s are hovering above his house. The UFO s are hidden in the shadows of the clouds. No matter where you are in the world, look up into the sky. You ll see them. The triangles. They might be angels, aliens, military spacecraft painted to be "cloaked" and invisible, or a couple of other possibilities that Sean does his best to explain. Everyone else sitting around the table is pretty polite and respectful. Except Andrew Duhon who s not buying it for a minute. Andrew is the 2014 Winner of The Big Easy Award for Best Folk or Country Artist. No stranger to accolades, Andrew recounts his past triumphant win the 3 legged race in elementary school. Back in school there probably wasn t a category for Most Likely to Write a Cynical Song About Dating. Andrew previews his new, unfinished not exactly love song that features the lyrics, "We re going out, Like a dying cigarette." The staggeringly impressive Scorseses make their 3rd appearance on Happy Hour, this time with new band members Sage Rouge Social Set and P Michael Hayes from Hazy Ray . The band s debut album, Magnumopus, is out and they re gearing up to hit the road on a nationwide tour. They rip up Casa Borrega with a cocktail curdling version of the classic weed smoking song, Minnie the Moocher. All the photos on this page were taken at Casa Borrega by the beadless Douglas Engel. Due to spotty preservation, this episode is the only one I can find in this series in the Superman program. Sponsered by Kellogs Pep. The story thus far deals with a flaming meteor that crashed onto a nearby farm. As Clark Kent investigated, he became weak and dizzy. Fearing a doctors exam would reveal his secret identity as Superman, he is reluctant but Perry makes him go anyway. His impervious skin has broken the doctors needle. Today, he is still in the doctor's office, but manages to get the visit over with. The mysterious word, "Krypton" keeps springing into the mind of Clark. He's certain it holds a clue to his weakness, and the meteor. There's something familiar about that word, 'Krypton,' it has a familiar ring to it, but he can't figure it out. . Back at the Daily Planet, Perry and Lois hound Clark about what he is keeping a secret from them. Are they on to his Superman identity? Lois reveals that a small group of scientists know about a planet named Krypton,m and they are certain that this meteor is from it. In following episodes, the pressure is on Clark, and he loses his temper with his friends. He continues to make sense of the mystery behind the strange meteor. I think it would be safe to assume that he figures it out, and still keeps his identity safe. Bonus Tracks: Cab Calloway. 1932. Minnie the Moocher. Graham McNamee. 1940 Talks about Mike Checks. Andrews Sisters. Ragtime Cowboy Joe. Minnie Pearl. 1945. Brother's New Girlfriend.
